MNUFC Hits the Road to Close Out Busy StretchMinnesota United caps off its stretch of seven games in 22 days with a trip out to Sandy, Utah, to face Real Salt Lake. After a slow start to the year, the Claret-and-Cobalt have surged up the standings into playoff position by winning five of their last 10 games. Minnesota has also been in excellent form, winning four consecutive league games for the first time in MLS. RSL will be riding high after trouncing Eastern Conference leaders Philadelphia Union 4-0 at home. Rio Tinto Stadium has been a fortress for RSL this season, and MNUFC has yet to take more than a single point there. Will tired legs and long travel finally take their toll on the Loons, or will the squad’s depth once again pay off by taking vital road points?

Aston Villa Gets Win in Friendly with MNUFCMinnesota United hosted newly promoted Premier League club Aston Villa at Allianz Field on Wednesday night. Both squads mixed up their usual lineups to get more players valuable minutes and try new combinations. Villa opened the scoring late in the first half with a dipping shot from captain Jack Grealish. Minnesota held the visitors scoreless for most of the game, even with a fresh lineup coming on in the second half for the visitors. With eight minutes left, a giveaway at the back allowed Villa to pounce on the ball and Henri Lansbury buried a volley to double their lead. A diving header from Bikir Bjarnason capped off the night for Aston Villa, as the Loons would fall 3-0.

MNUFC GAME NOTES

• Vito Mannone set a new club record on Saturday against FC Dallas, keeping his sixth clean sheet of the season. He also holds the record for the most wins in a season with 13 in all competitions.

• Mannone saved a stoppage time penalty to seal the victory for MNUFC. It was the club’s first penalty save since September 23, 2017 when Bobby Shuttleworth denied FC Dallas’ Michael Barrios.

• Mannone is tied for the third-most wins in the league with 10, and his 66 saves are the third-highest total in the league.

• Mason Toye scored his second game-winning goal of the year against FC Dallas. He now has four goals and two assists in his last four league appearances.

• Toye leads the league with an average of 2.07 goals scored per 90 minutes played and a 66.7% scoring rate.

• The Loons have scored 37 goals so far in MLS play, placing them third in the league behind Philadelphia Union and LAFC.

• Minnesota has scored at least three goals in a game seven times in MLS, the second-most behind LAFC.

• On Tuesday, MNUFC signed Finland international midfielder Robin Lod. Lod joins the Loons after playing the 2018-19 season with Spain’s Sporting Gijon.

• Darwin Quintero leads the all-time series against RSL with three assists in two games.

• Osvaldo Alonso (1G/3A), Ethan Finlay (2G/1A), Miguel Ibarra (2G), Kevin Molino (1G/2A), Ike Opara (4G) and Quintero (1G/3A) all have career points against Real Salt Lake.

• Romain Metanire returns to the Loons after representing Madagascar at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. It was the country’s first time qualifying for the tournament. Metanire’s squad won their group and reached the Quarterfinals before being eliminated by Tunisia. Metanire had an assist in the dramatic Round of 16 clash against the DR Congo that ended in penalties.

• Ike Opara and Vito Mannone made the MLS Team of the Week for their efforts in Week 19. Opara made his club-record fifth appearance of the season, tying Quintero in 2018.

• This will be Minnesota’s fourth consecutive game against a team sitting in a playoff position.

• Last game against Dallas was the first game MNUFC failed to score at least three goals since June 8.

• The Loons have won seven consecutive games in all competitions, scoring 27 goals and allowing eight.

MNUFC GAME NOTES

2015 MINNESOTA UNITED FC GOAL MAPMINNESOTA UNITED NEWS AND NOTES

Minnesota United Signs Midfielder Robin LodMinnesota United has signed Finnish midfielder Robin Lod from Spain’s La Liga 2 side Sporting de Gijon using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM), the team announced today. Lod will join the Loons pending receipt of his P1 Visa and ITC. Lod will occupy an international spot on Minnesota’s roster.

“We’re really excited that he’s decided to join us. This is a player that we’ve been trying to get here since his Panathinaikos days, before he went to Spain. We’ve been following him very closely ever since. He’s been outstanding in form for the Finland National team, who are undefeated, at the top of their European qualifying group,” said MNUFC Head Coach Adrian Heath. “I think his game suits the MLS to a T and I’m expecting big things from him. He can score goals, he can make goals, he can play three or four positions. I think he can play through the middle, he can certainly play in wide areas. He’s going to be a great addition to what we already have and I’m hoping that Robin is the first of two or three [additions] during this window.”

The 26-year-old attacking midfielder joined Sporting de Gijon in 2018, making his debut with the Liga 2 side on August 26, where he scored his first goal against Tarragona. During his time with Sporting de Gijon, Lod played 1,212 minutes across 77 games and with four goals. Lod currently represents Finland on the Finland National Team with current Loon Rasmus Schuller. Lod made his international debut in 2013 at age 20 and has since had more than 30 caps for the national team, including an appearance in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Ike Opara and Vito Mannone Represent MNUFC on Team of the WeekMinnesota United is represented in the MLS Team of the Week for the third-straight week, with multiple players being honored. Defender Ike Opara, who has featured in all three of those weeks, is joined by goalkeeper Vito Mannone for their role in the Loons’ clean-sheet win over FC Dallas.

Opara has now featured five times in the Team of the Week this year, tying Darwin Quintero in 2018 for the most in a single season. He was excellent at relieving pressure at the back to keep FC Dallas off the board at Allianz Field. He made seven clearances, three of those with his head, to break up the visitors’ attacking pressure, and made two key interceptions at the back. His attacking ability was on display once again, as he got on the end of set pieces throughout the game.

Making his first non-bench appearance in the Team of the Week, Mannone was one of the heroes on Saturday night for MNUFC. He made six stellar saves, including a stoppage time penalty kick stop that secured three points for the fourth consecutive league game. It was Mannone’s sixth clean sheet of the year, setting a new single-season record for the club.

Adrian Heath on the Energy and Noise at Allianz Field on Saturday “I’ve said that relationship between the supporters and the players is getting stronger by the game. In hindsight, it couldn’t have worked out better giving us the penalty and everybody being deflated and then Vito saving it, the noise then, just exploded. It was incredible. It was a great atmosphere on Saturday. I thanked the crowd after the game on Saturday but they’ve helped us the last couple games because as I said on Saturday, these guys have been running on empty a bit last week so it was a big win for us.”

Heath on Real Salt Lake This Season“Attacking-wise at home, [they’ve] been very, very strong. [Jefferson] Savarino is in great form at this moment in time. [Damir] Kreilach is just big and strong. [Albert] Rusnak is probably one of the better 10’s in the league. [Sebastian] Saucedo has come in and he’s been fantastic. For them, the last few weeks – four-nil against the Eastern Conference leaders – it sets them up nicely. They’ll know how important this game is.”

Vito Mannone Getting Three Points in a Close Game Against Dallas“I felt it was a game [that] we needed to stay in as much as possible. I had the feeling, as the manager said before the game, halftime and throughout the game that the legs were tired and we play so many games. The cup has been tough for us, took our energy away. The traveling, Houston, Montreal, it’s difficult. We play every three days and it’s difficult for the youngest [guys]. Imagine [how it is] for people with a little bit of age. It’s tough. We had to stay in the game [and] I thought that we did brilliantly. We defended well, we kept them out and tried to sue our only power going forward, trying to create something. To score in the 91st especially, is important because it’s really the last push. After we kept them out, we knew it was a nil-nil and the manager made three changes, fresh legs and the guys who came on were brilliant as usual and then we pushed for the winner. Once it happened, you think it’s over, it’s not. We went to [the] 98th minute and the last moment is something magical and something that sticks with the fans, sticks with the players and myself too.”

Mannone on the Importance of Getting a Result Against RSL“I think it’s massive. It looks like, as you said, every week is a final. We won seven [in a row], four in MLS play [and] it looks like nothing changes. All the rest of the teams are keeping the pace and fighting for their lives as we do [too]. So, why not go out there and gain another three points? It’s as easy as that. It’s a dogfight and we will fight until the end to earn the respect that I think we deserve right now. We’ve done an excellent job. On the next unfinished job, you do nothing with it [but] we need to carry on and finish the job. It’s a big push and hopefully the team will go for it.”

Minnesota United Unveil First Mini-Pitch in Twin CitiesIn partnership with MLS Works, the U.S. Soccer Foundation and Saint Paul Parks and Recreation, Minnesota United celebrated the grand unveiling of the first mini-pitch in the Twin Cities on Friday, July 12. Located at St. Claire Park, next to the West 7th Community Center in Saint Paul, the mini-pitch represents a commitment to the Twin Cities to offer children in underserved communities with a safe place to play, encouraging both structured and unstructured play within local communities, and thereby supporting the continued growth of soccer in the U.S.

The grand unveiling included appearances by Minnesota United CEO Chris Wright and broadcast analyst Kyndra de St. Aubin, both of whom spoke to the group about uniting the communities within Saint Paul through the game of soccer. Minnesota United midfielder Ethan Finlay and sideline reporter Jamie Watson were also in attendance, playing soccer with kids from Saint Paul Parks and Rec.

This mini-pitch also marks the latest development in the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s It’s Everyone’s Game national movement to ensure children in underserved communities can enjoy the health and youth development benefits of the game. Major League Soccer is a national partner of the movement. The Foundation’s goal is to engage one million children in Soccer for Success, its free after-school program, and build 1,000 new safe places to play by 2026.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 24 teams from across the United States and Canada.

After a successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top-level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with 10 teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.

The league’s first game was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United in front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by Columbus Crew (SC), who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 20 teams play in soccer-specific venues.

The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 games during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away games. The top seven teams in each conference at the end of the year qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Starting in 2019, the league has adopted a new single-elimination format for the entirety of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top seven teams in each conference qualify for postseason, with the regular-season conference champions receiving a first-round bye. The second through seventh seeds will play the opening round games, with the highest seed hosting games throughout the tournament. The winners will move on to join the one-seed teams in the conference semifinals. The winner of each conference championship will move on the the MLS Cup Final. The team with the best regular season record will host the final.

Prior to his time in the PDL, Pascarella spent eight seasons with SKC. Starting as a goalkeeper and fitness coach from 2009–2011, he then transitioned to become an assistant coach during an incredibly successful time in the franchise’s history; he helped guide SKC to a club-record six-straight playoff appearances, including the 2013 MLS Cup Final and the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles.
