Loons Take Aim at One of the Top Teams in the WestMinnesota United returns to league play on Saturday as third-place Houston Dynamo makes its first trip to Allianz Field. The two sides have gotten to know each other very well since the Loons came to MLS, facing off six times in that stretch in both MLS and Open Cup action. The Dynamo have been dominant at home this season, but have struggled away from BBVA Compass Stadium. When they have been healthy, the attacking trio of Alberth Elis, Mauro Manotas and Romell Quioto has wreaked havoc on opposing defenders, and Houston will want to unleash them in Minnesota. The Loons have done well shutting down the league’s top attackers so far at home, and will look to continue the trend on Saturday.

Depth on Display for MNUFC Against Hertha BerlinMinnesota United welcomed Bundesliga side Herth Berlin to Allianz Field for an international friendly on Wednesday. The game kicked off a U.S. summer tour for the visitors and allowed the Loons to rotate the squad and get high-quality minutes for players who have been out of the starting XI. Hassani Dotson was a standout at right back in the first half, shutting down Ivory Coast international Salomon Kalou. Goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair performed well in his first appearance in front of the home crowd at Allianz Field, making several big saves against the German club. Hertha’s Peter Pekarik would score the lone goal on a rebound just before halftime, helping the visitors to a 1-0 win over MNUFC.

MNUFC GAME NOTES

• Minnesota held Columbus Crew SC to zero shots on goal in its last league game on Saturday. This is the first time MNUFC has prevented an opponent from hitting the target since joining MLS. Prior to that game, the Loons had held opponents to one shot on goal eight times.

• Ethan Finlay scored his first goal of 2019 against Columbus on Saturday. It is his first goal since March 10, 2018. He was sidelined for most of last season after suffering a season-ending injury on April 22, 2018 against Seattle Sounders FC.

• Finlay made his 180th regular season appearance in MLS last game.

• Brent Kallman provided his first assist of the year on Finlay’s goal. The two players were teammates at Creighton University prior to Finlay joining MNUFC in 2017.

• Kallman has made six consecutive starts for the Loons.

• Romain Metanire was also credited with an assist on Finlay’s goal. He leads the Loons with five assists on the year. He is just two assists behind league leaders Carlos Vela of LAFC and Nicolas Lodeiro of Seattle Sounders FC.

• Metanire, Vito Mannone and Osvaldo Alonso have played every minute of the season for the Loons.

• Mannone kept his fourth clean sheet of the season against Columbus. He is one shutout away from tying Bobby Shuttleworth for the club single-season record, and three from tying the club all-time record.

• The Loons are 2-0-3 at Allianz Field.

• MNUFC has conceded just one goal in its last four home games.

• Minnesota is currently on its longest home unbeaten run at five games.

• On Tuesday, Minnesota United announced it had loaned midfielder Romario Ibarra to C.F. Pachuca of Mexico’s Liga MX. Romario will be on loan for 13 months, with Pachuca having an option to buy at the end of the loan.

• MNUFC welcomed German club Hertha Berlin to Allianz Field for an international friendly on Wednesday night. The game was the first of a U.S. summer tour for the Bundesliga club.

• Houston has been one of the best teams at home this season, going 6-0-2 at BBVA Compass Stadium. However, it is just 1-0-2 while on the road.

• Minnesota and Houston are two of five teams that are undefeated at home so far this season.

• This will be Minnesota’s third of five games in 15 days.

MNUFC GAME NOTES

2015 MINNESOTA UNITED FC GOAL MAPMINNESOTA UNITED NEWS AND NOTES

Brent Kallman on the Keys to Defensive Improvement“I think we’re doing a way better job this year of getting numbers behind the ball. It’s not so much the back six having to defend, we’re defending from the front. We’ve got 11 guys behind the ball, that’s hard to break down. I think it really showed itself the last several games at home, but especially Saturday night, where they only got four shots, I don’t think one on target. We really limited their chances and that’s because the guys up front are doing their job. They’re getting behind the ball, making it hard to make that first pass in the midfield.”

Adrian Heath on Houston’s Threats“In [Alberth] Elis, is there anyone more dynamic in the league? I don’t think so. People underestimate how good he is in the air as well, because he’s a huge kid. And then [Maruo] Manotas has really developed. I think they’ve done a great job in bringing him along. [Romell] Quioto on the other side is very, very quick. They’ve got a lot of really good pieces — the kid [Memo] Rodriguez as well. Attacking-wise, they’re a formidable outfit, so we’ll have to defend well, get a good shape and make the most of when we get the ball. As I say, I do think we can cause them problems as well.”

Miguel Ibarra on Making Allianz Field a Fortress“Our fans, to us, they’re like having an additional player on the field, they give us the energy to get results. At home, we’re a strong team and I think our fans, if they keep supporting us, [Allianz Field] will always be a stadium where other teams won’t want to play against us because they know, with the support of our fans and the team we have, they won’t get a result.”

Unified Team Signing DayOn Monday May 20, Minnesota United and Special Olympics of Minnesota held an official signing day for the 2019 Unified team at Allianz Field. MLS, ESPN and Special Olympics have teamed up to promote an environment of social inclusion by uniting people with and without disabilities through Special Olympics Unified Sports. Unified teams represent their home MLS Club, get outfitted in authentic uniforms provided by adidas, and travel to MLS markets to compete in exhibition matches. The Unified team is part of MLS’s Soccer For All program which fosters social inclusion and acceptance by uniting athletes from different backgrounds and disabilities to have fun playing the beautiful game. Upon arrival the athletes and their families were amazed by the stadium as this was their first time visiting Allianz Field.

The Unified athletes were treated to the full first-team experience. Big smiles and amazement abounded as the team stepped into the locker room; each athlete received a full kit, including a custom jersey, a full training kit and the Allianz Field jacket. Each athlete had their headshots taken as they went through a first-team production day before signing their official contract with Minnesota United Sporting Director, Manny Lagos. The Unified Team will represent Minnesota United against Colorado Rapids’ Unified Team first in Colorado on June 8, and again at home on August 14. Kyndra de St. Aubin and Jamie Watson were spreading motivation and interacting with the athletes as they went between stations. First team players were also in attendance to congratulate the athletes on this memorable day. Before heading out onto the field, Jan Gregus created a juggling circle with first team players and Unified athletes after finding a soccer ball in the locker room. After contracts were signed, the team walked through the first-team procession before being introduced in front of their friends and family and MNUFC supporters. This day will forever be a memorable day for each and every one of the athletes.

Ethan Finlay and Romain Metanire Named to MLS Team of the WeekMinnesota United extended its unbeaten run at Allianz Field with a 1-0 win over Columbus Crew SC over the weekend. For their contributions to claiming three more points for the Loons, Ethan Finlay and Romain Metanire have been named to the MLS Team of the Week for Week 12.

Finlay makes his first appearance in the Team of the Week in 2019, and his first since Week 2 of the 2018 season when he scored twice against Orlando City SC. The Duluth-born midfielder scored the lone goal against his former team, tapping home the ball after receiving a headed pass from former Creighton University teammate Brent Kallman. Along with his game-winner, Finlay won six take-ons and completed 12 passes in Crew SC’s half.

Metanire features in the Team of the Week for the third time this season, last appearing in Week 9. The Madagascar international was credited with an assist on Finlay’s goal, serving the ball to the far post to Kallman for the header. He now leads the Loons with five on the year. Metanire was a dual threat once again, making three interceptions, three clearances and blocking a shot defensively, and making 15 passes in the final third with a pair of successful crosses in the offensive half.

MNUFC Pride GameMinnesota United celebrates the LGBTQ+ community this June by hosting its sixth annual Pride Game against the Philadelphia Union on Sunday, June 2 at 3:00 p.m. MNUFC was the first professional sports team to sign the Athlete Ally pledge in October of 2014, demonstrating a commitment to equality and inclusiveness – two guiding principles that the club has carried forward with it into Allianz Field and Major League Soccer.

“The values embodied by Pride are reflected in our own core values,” said MNUFC CEO Chris Wright. “As an organization and member of the community, we value respect and we strive to be inclusive. We believe everyone has a place in the world’s game.”

Players will exit the tunnel surrounded by massive rainbow scarves, mirroring a rainbow armband worn by the Minnesota United captain on the pitch. MNUFC players will be sporting a special edition Pride Night Kit detailed by rainbow-colored number decals. LED boards across the stadium will flash multicolor displays throughout the match with a special video presentation ahead of kickoff.

Fans should look for special MNUFC + LGBTQ+ gear and keep an eye on the video board for a special Pride feature that will run prior to kickoff, with members from the LGBTQ+ community integrated into every part of gameday on June 2.

MNUFC Announces Partnership with National Sports CenterThe National Sports Center (NSC) and Minnesota United FC formally announced a partnership that will cement the NSC as the home of Minnesota United’s Training Ground and the home of soccer in Minnesota. The partnership will provide far-ranging and long-term support to soccer at all levels in the State of Minnesota, from youth to the professional level.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 24 teams from across the United States and Canada.

After a successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top-level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with 10 teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.

The league’s first game was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United in front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by Columbus Crew (SC), who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 20 teams play in soccer-specific venues.

The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 games during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away games. The top seven teams in each conference at the end of the year qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Starting in 2019, the league has adopted a new single-elimination format for the entirety of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top seven teams in each conference qualify for postseason, with the regular-season conference champions receiving a first-round bye. The second through seventh seeds will play the opening round games, with the highest seed hosting games throughout the tournament. The winners will move on to join the one-seed teams in the conference semifinals. The winner of each conference championship will move on the the MLS Cup Final. The team with the best regular season record will host the final.
