Gain ADF coverage
and variation
Marta De Laurentis [email protected]

Scope:
Investigate the potential anomalies due to gain auxiliary file coverage in the processing from LØ
L1 products (v7 and v8)
Activity:
Extraction of used Gain files in the processing from LØ L1 products
Analysis of v7 Gain Files (weekly, both measured and interpolated) vs. Full Mission LØ Products
Generate yearly maps of Gain ADF coverage
Identification, Inspection and Mapping of detected events by:
ISAC (ref. e-mail 21-22/03/2016, “analysis of Radiances Band-B [20N - 65N]”)
IFAC (ref. e-mail 14/03/2016, “CH4 and N2O discontinuities”)
Generation of plots of band-B radiometric gain variation
Objective
Obtain a list of time periods along the mission duration (2002-2012) with products potentially
affected by gain issues in band-B, which could bring to CH4 and N2O discontinuities.
Evaluate the percentage of variation between two consecutive Gain ADFs

Different cases have been identified by cross checking the operations plan, list of discontinuities
and yearly maps. For example:

Min/Mean/Max Gain Percentage Variation [August 2004 – March 2012]
MIPAS QWG #41, ESRIN 6-8 April 2016
Some dates have been identified and mapped vs planning operations (including
interruptions, passive decontamination)
Conclusion
Conclusions:
After a passive decontamination, reduced duty cycle or an operations interruption period it seems
that the auxiliary gain file introduce radiance variation in the band-B in the period just after.
In few cases the radiance variation is > 2% without any operations interruptions.
Note: Visible spike at ~ 1380 cm-1 in gain variations plots.
For the v8 gain coverage maps are on-going.
