The above analysis suggests that an inadequate modeling of the horizontal variability of temperature fields could explain the day-night differences observed in the IMK data as well as their reversal when changing season.

Conclusions

IMK

MIPAS2D

Oxford day-nighttime CFC11 (left) and HNO3 (right).

The opposite VMR vertical gradient induces a reversal of the day-nighttime difference.

MIPAS2D: night-daytime differences in F11

MIPAS2D nighttime-daytime “daily” mean F11 in latitude bands

a) Left: 60S/40S (equivalent to Stiller's example)

b) Centre:40S/40N

c) Right: 40N/60N

Results are obtained performing a weighted average, a 3-sigma clipping filtering and are then smoothed over a 3-day running box.

MIPAS2D: night-daytime differences in F11

MIPAS2D daytime F11 “daily” standard deviation in latitude bands

a) Left: 60S/40S (Stiller's example band)

b) Centre:40S/40N

c) Right: 40N/60N

No significant difference with nighttime standard deviation (not shown).

MIPAS2D: night-daytime differences in F11

MIPAS2D daytime F11 “daily” mean ESD in latitude bands

a) Left: 60S/40S (Stiller's example band)

b) Centre:40S/40N

c) Right: 40N/60N

No significant difference with nighttime mean ESD (not shown).

MIPAS2D: night-daytime differences in F11

MIPAS2D number of daytime F11 measurements in latitude bands

a) Left: 60S/40S (Stiller's example band)

b) Centre:40S/40N

c) Right: 40N/60N

No significant difference with number of nighttime measurements (not shown).
