In addition to the new classrooms, anothernew tradition was also started on July 1st –the implementation of full day Kindergarten.Miramonte Kindergartners are nowattending school from 7:45 – 2:39, the samehours as grades 1st through 5th. This longerschedule now provides more instructionaltime for their teachers to teach theyoungsters. Miramonte is one of a fewschools in District 7 that offers full dayKindergarten.

The addition of our new classrooms and theimplementation of full day kindergarten aresome of the continuing efforts being made toimprove education for your children here atMiramonte.

Career DayAbove are the invited guests that came to speak to the

youngsters of Miramonte regarding the numerous types ofprofessions available to them upon the completion of their

Una cosa que los padres deben saberacerca de la lectura – Qué puedo hacerpara crear un ambiente de lectura en la

casa?

Si usted quiere que su niño sea un lector llenesu casa con muchos libros de niños.Establezca Buenos hábitos de lecturahaciendo tiempo para la lectura. Algunasfamilias tienen media hora de lectura cada díacuando la TV está apagada y todos en la casaleen, incluyendo a los padres. Nada es máspoderoso que su ejemplo como lector, enséñelea su niño que usted goza un buen libro.Ayude a su niño a escoger libros que sean desu interés y aproppiados a su nivel de lectura.Use la regla de los cinco-dedos. Si su niñoescoge un libro y se tropieza en 5 palabras enuna página o en un párrafo, ese libroprobablemente es muy difícil y deben escogeruno más fácil para que realmente lo puedangozar.

Diabetes Awareness

There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2.18.2 million people in the United States (U.S.) havediabetes. Of these, 95% (17 million) have Type 2.Diabetes is the fifth deadliest disease in the U.S. –killing more than 210,000 people a year.

Type 1 diabetes is genetic and requires insulininjections because the body cannot make its owninsulin. In Type 2 diabetes, the body cannot makeenough insulin or cannot properly use the insulinit does make. Type 2 diabetes is seen more oftenin children and adolescents, whereas it used toonly be seen in adults.

Type 2 Diabetes commonly occurs in children whoare overweight; have a parent, sibling, aunt oruncle that has Type 2 diabetes; or belong to acertain racial/ethnic group – African American,Hispanic/Latino and Native American descent.

environment at home?

If you want your child to be a reader, fillyour house with lots of children’s books.Establish good reading habits by makingtime for reading. Some families have areading half-hour every day when theTV is shut off and everyone reads, eventhe parents. Nothing is as powerful asyour example as a reader, showing yourchild you enjoy a good book. Helpchildren choose books that will be ofinterest to them and that are appropriateto their reading level. Use the five-fingerrule. If a child picks up a book andstumbles over five words on one page orin a paragraph, that book is probably toodifficult and the child should choose aneasier one for now that he/she can reallyenjoy.

Full Day KindergartenAfter many months of anticipation and planning,full day Kindergarten for Miramonte’s 5 year oldsstarted on July 1, 2004. Now instead of the usualdismissal or arrival hour at 11:00 am forKindergarten, the young children now arrive at7:45 and stay all day, until 2:39 pm.

The additional hours not only allow the teacher toprovide a more comprehensive instructionalprogram in Math and Reading, but have alsocreated longer blocks of time for PhysicalEducation, Art and English LanguageDevelopment. Because of full day, a more well-rounded and improved curriculum is beingprovided to our newest group of Miramontealumni.

Good luck to the Miramonte graduating class of2010, you’re off to a great academic head startbecause of full day Kindergarten.

Después de muchos meses de anticipación yorganización, la implementación de Dia Entero deKinder comenzó el 1 de Julio del 2004. En vez dela hora acostumbrado de salida o llegada a las 11,los estudiantes de Kinder estan comenzado su diaa las 7:45 y se quedan todo el dia, hasta 2:39 pm.

Las horas adicionales no solamente le dejan almaestro de enseñar mas extensamente en Lectura yMatemática, pero tambien hará mas bloques detiempo de instrucción para Educación Fisica, Artey Lenguaje del Desarrollo de Inglés. Por estarazón, el grupo mas nuevo de alumnos deMiramonte están recibiendo una curricula mejor ymás efectiva.

Buena suerte a la clase del futuro del año 2010.Su carrera académico acaba de recibir un impulsopara ayudar sus estudios en el presente y el futuro.

On June 12, 2004, 300 parents and childrenparticipated in Miramonte’s First “School ReadinessParent Fair”. This fair was sponsored and organizedby the Urban Education Partnership, MiramonteElementary and the Miramonte Early EducationChildren’s Center. Workshops were presented thatoffered ideas and activities on early literacy andreading that the parent and child could do at home.In addition to the workshops, Miramonte’sFolklorico Dancers performed during lunch. Afterlunch, there was a puppet show and then a raffle.The raffle gave out backpacks and books to thechildren. The fair was a great success and we lookforward to another one in the upcoming year.

On Saturday June 12, 2004, a group of children fromMiramonte Elementary boarded a bus to Locke High.Their journey was to take them center stage in front ofmany proud parents and guests, where they performed aCivil Rights chant and rap dance. The children wereperforming in District I’s “Spoken Word Festival.”

The requirements in order to be able to participate in thisfestival were for the class to develop a performance thatincorporated Language Art and Theatre Arts/Dancestandards and to audition. Their hard work resulted increating a wonderful song and dance performance for theaudience at Locke High School.

Many thanks to the students for all their hard work and forthe sacrifice of their vacation time in order to perform inthis event. And of course, thanks are in order to theirwonderful teachers, Mr. Luis Lopez, Ms. Michalske andMs. Maria Peraza, who made this memorable event fortheir students possible.

Thank you Ms. Peraza, Mr. Lopez and Ms. Michalske foryour dedication to your students.

El sabado 12 de junio del 2004, un grupode estudiantes de la escuela Miramonteabordarón un autobus con destino aLocke High School. Su viaje les llevó ael escenario central en frente de padresorgullosos e invitados distinguidos dondehicierón una actuación de canción y bailesobre el tema del Moviemiento deDerechos Civiles durante los años 1950-1960, aqui en este pais. Los estudiantesfuerón participantes en “El Festival dePalabra Contado” (Spoken WordFestival).

Para que una clase participe en estefestival, los estudiantes tuviervón quecrear una obra que integró las normas deArte de Lenguaje así como ellos de ArteVisual y Baile. Los esfuerzos de losniños producierón un obra que fuémaravillosa y creativa.

Les damos muchas gracias a losestudiantes de las clases del Sr. LuisLopez, Sra. Maria Peraza y Srta.Michalske. Tambien, este eventomemorable para los alumnus no sehubiera llevado sin la enseñanza y elsoporte de sus maestros. Muchas graciasa los maestros!

For two afternoons in June, the teachers ofMiramonte danced, jumped and simplymoved. The Diavolo Dance Group came totrain them on simple movement activitiesthat they could do in their classrooms withtheir students. Studies have shown thatincorporating dance and the arts in theregular daily curriculum helps students learnbetter.

Though they were tired and sweatyafterwards, the teachers greatly enjoyed andlearned a great deal at this “rigorous” staffdevelopment.

Durante dos tardes en el mes de junio, los maestros deMiramonte se juntarón para bailar, brincar ysimplemente moverse. En estos dias, los maestrosrecibierón entrenamiento del grupo de baile, llamado“The Diavolo Dance Group”. Los entrenadores lesenseñaron a los maestros movimientos y actividadesbasicos que ellos puedan usar en sus salones. Estudiosdicen que la incorporación de baile y los artes lesayudan a los niños a aprender mejor y recordar mas.

Aunque los maestros estaban cansados y sudorososdespués de este entrenamiento, ellos dijeron que sedivirtierón y aprendierón mucho.
