Santa Cecilia (?-Roma, 232) Virgen, santa y mártir romana, patrona de los músicos. A pesar de ser una de las santas más populares de todos los tiempos, es muy poco lo que se conoce sobre ella. Se cree que nació en Roma, en el seno de una ilus-tre familia, y que fue casada contra su voluntad con un joven pagano llamado Valerio.

Cecilia logró que su marido respetara su virgini-dad y se convirtiera al cristianismo. Valerio fue bautizado por el papa Urbano, y, junto con su hermano Tiburcio, también convertido, dio sepe-lio a los mártires de la persecución de Turco Almaquio. Denunciados por esta práctica, ambos hermanos fueron decapitados.

El culto de Santa Cecilia se difundió ampliamente a causa del relato de su martirio, que la ensalza como ejemplo de la mujer cristiana. Una frase del acta de su martirio, según la cual cantó durante el tormento, le valió ser patrona de los músicos. Las agrupaciones musicales, coros y orquestas la celebran como patrona el 22 de noviembre.

Primera Lectura: Proverbios 31: 10-13, 19-20, 30-31 Dichoso el hombre que encuentra una mujer ha-

cendosa: muy superior a las perlas es su valor. Su

marido confía en ella y, con su ayuda, él se enri-

quecerá; todos los días de su vida le procurará

bienes y no males. Adquiere lana y lino y los tra-

baja con sus hábiles manos. Sabe manejar la rueca

y con sus dedos mueve el huso; abre sus manos al

pobre y las tiende al desvalido. Son engañosos los

encantos y vana la hermosura; merece alabanza la

mujer que teme al Señor. Es digna de gozar del

fruto de sus trabajos y de ser alabada por todos.

Segunda Lectura: 1Tesalonicenses 5: 1-6 Hermanos: Por lo que se refiere al tiempo y a las circunstancias de

la venida del Señor, no necesitan que les escribamos nada, puesto

que ustedes saben perfectamente que el día del Señor llegará como

un ladrón en la noche. Cuando la gente esté diciendo: “¡Qué paz y

qué seguridad tenemos!”, de repente vendrá sobre ellos la catástro-

fe, como de repente le vienen a la mujer encinta los dolores del

parto, y no podrán escapar. Pero a ustedes, hermanos, ese día no

los tomará por sorpresa, como un ladrón, porque ustedes no viven

en tinieblas, sino que son hijos de la luz y del día, no de la noche y

las tinieblas. Por tanto, no vivamos dormidos, como los malos;

antes bien, mantengámonos despiertos y vivamos sobriamente.

Evangelio: Mateo 25: 14-30 En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos esta parábola: “El

Reino de los cielos se parece también a un hombre que iba a salir

de viaje a tierras lejanas; llamó a sus servidores de confianza y les

encargó sus bienes. A uno le dio cinco talentos; a otro, dos; y a un

tercero, uno, según la capacidad de cada uno, y luego se fue. El que

recibió cinco talentos fue enseguida a negociar con ellos y ganó

otros cinco. El que recibió dos hizo lo mismo y ganó otros dos. En

cambio, el que recibió un talento hizo un hoyo en la tierra y allí

escondió el dinero de su señor. Después de mucho tiempo regresó

aquel hombre y llamó a cuentas a sus servidores. Se acercó el que

había recibido cinco talentos y le presentó otros cinco, diciendo:

‘Señor, cinco talentos me dejaste; aquí tienes otros cinco, que con

ellos he ganado’. Su señor le dijo: ‘Te felicito, siervo bueno y fiel.

Puesto que has sido fiel en cosas de poco valor te confiaré cosas de

mucho valor. Entra a tomar parte en la alegría de tu señor’. Se acer-

có luego el que había recibido dos talentos y le dijo: ‘Señor, dos

talentos me dejaste; aquí tienes otros dos, que con ellos he ganado’.

Su señor le dijo: ‘Te felicito, siervo bueno y fiel. Puesto que has

sido fiel en cosas de poco valor, te confiaré cosas de mucho valor.

Entra a tomar parte en la alegría de tu señor’. Finalmente, se acercó

el que había recibido un talento y le dijo: ‘Señor, yo sabía que eres

un hombre duro, que quieres cosechar lo que no has plantado y

recoger lo que no has sembrado. Por eso tuve miedo y fui a escon-

der tu talento bajo tierra. Aquí tienes lo tuyo’. El señor le respon-

dió: ‘Siervo malo y perezoso. Sabías que cosecho lo que no he

plantado y recojo lo que no he sembrado. ¿Por qué, entonces, no

pusiste mi dinero en el banco para que, a mi regreso, lo recibiera yo

con intereses? Quítenle el talento y dénselo al que tiene diez. Pues

REFLEXION DOMINICAL / SUNDAY REFLECTION Nuestra Cultura: A veces algunas personas no buscan superarse y estudiar más, por falta de reconocimiento de los talentos intelectuales que poseen; o no ofre-cen sus talentos en su comunidad, porque no son conscientes de que los tienen.

Reflexiones para la homilía Algunos maestros utilizan la Parábola de los Talentos para decirles a los alumnos que hay que estudiar más y esforzarse al máximo; y que usar nuestros talentos significa estar atentos y hacer bien nues-tro trabajo. Asimismo, se nos ha dicho que incluso en caso de que las cosas no se consigan fácilmente, debemos esforzarnos más, porque se nos ha dado la capacidad; y que hay que mirar a quienes lograban resul-tados aun con limitaciones y dificultad, para que ver cómo con sus talentos —los pocos que han recibido— logran más que algunos que han recibido mucho más, pero no lo aprovechaban bien. La vida, nuestra personalidad, nuestras habilidades, la familia en que hemos nacido, los recursos y las oportunidades económicas que tenemos son dones y talentos. Hoy Jesús nos recuerda que no debemos enterrar nuestros talen-tos; tenemos que ponerlos a trabajar; pero, ¿para qué? ¿Para lograr una vida mejor para nosotros? ¿Para tener más dinero? ¿Para ser felices y aprovecharnos de esos dones? Los talentos recibidos no son para nuestro disfrute personal, sino para los demás, para que vayamos construyendo el Reino de Dios aquí en la tierra. Las mejores fiestas son aquellas en las que quienes van aportan algo. Todos gozamos de todo y cada uno aporta lo que tiene o lo que sabe hacer; eso es poner los talentos al servicio de la fraternidad; y es lo que Jesús nos pide que hagamos en nuestra familia y nuestra comunidad.

Para la reflexión ¿Cuáles son mis talentos y habilidades? ¿Me los guardo para mí? ¿Cómo podría usarlos para el bienestar de los demás? ¿Pretendo a veces recibir y no dar?

Our Culture Sometimes people fail to seek greater achievement and study more because they do not recognize the intellectual talents they possess; or they do not offer their talents in their community, because they are unaware that they have them.

Homily Reflection Some teachers use the Parable of the Talents to tell their students that they needed to study more, to put in the maximum effort; and that to use our talents means paying attention and doing our job well. Likewise, we have been told that even in case things do not come with ease, we have to put in greater effort because we have been given the ability; and that we must look at those who achieve results albeit with limitations and difficulty, so that we could see how with their talents—the little they received—they achieve more than those who have received much more but do not take advantage of it. Life, our personality, our abilities, the family we have been born into, the economic resources and opportunities we have are all gifts and talents. Jesus reminds us today that we must not bury our talents; we have to put them to work; but, to what purpose? To attain a better life for ourselves? To have more money? To be happy and benefit ourselves from these gifts? The talents received are not for our own personal enjoyment; they are given to help others, so that we can continue building the Reign of God here on earth. The best feasts are the ones where those who attend bring some-thing. Everyone enjoys everything and each one brings what they have and what they know how to do; this is putting talents in the service of the fraternity; and it is what Jesus asks us to do in our family and our community.

For Reflection What are my talents and abilities? Do I keep them to myself? How can I use them in benefit of others? Do I sometimes seek to re-ceive and not give?

La Presentación de la Santísima Virgen María en el Templo 21 de noviembre

Honramos hoy la Presentación en el Templo de aquella Niña de bendición. Los orígenes de esta fiesta hay que buscarlos en una piadosa tradición que surge en el escrito apócrifo llamado el «Protoevangelio de Santiago». Según este documento la Virgen María fue llevada a la edad de tres años por sus padres San Joaquín y Santa Ana. Allí, junto a otras doncellas y piadosas mujeres, fue instruida cuidadosamente respecto la fe de sus padres y sobre los deberes para con Dios. Históricamente, el origen de esta fiesta fue la dedicación de la Iglesia de Santa María la Nueva en Jerusalén , en el año 543. Todo eso se viene conmemorando en Oriente desde el siglo VI, y hasta habla de ello el emperador Miguel Comeno en una Constitución de 1166. Un gentil hombre francés, canciller en la corte del Rey de Chipre, habiendo sido enviado a Aviñón en 1372, en calidad de embajador ante el Papa Gregorio XI, le contó la magnificen-cia con que en Grecia celebraban esta fiesta el 21 de noviembre. El Papa entonces la intro-dujo en Aviñón, y Sixto V la impuso a toda la Iglesia.

Virgen María, morada del Espíritu Santo: suplicámoste por su intercesión nos concedas merecer ser presentados en el templo de tu gloria. Por nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Amén

Catholics and Thanksgiving

Still a Holy Day?

The fourth Thursday in November is set aside in this coun-

try as a day of public thanksgiving

and prayer acknowledging the many

favors of God. Though many Ameri-

cans do not acknowledge God pub-

licly anymore, we still celebrate this

day each year. It has now become a

day of eating a large meal with fami-

ly and friends; a day to watch football; a day off from work.

Like many other holidays, it seems to have lost its focus.

As Catholics we can easily say, “Well, Thanksgiving isn’t a

real Holy Day or Feast Day, so why worry about the secu-

larization of it?” And this is true. A government-mandated

holiday is not a Holy Day as we commonly understand

them. We are not required to attend Mass or to refrain from

work. The Catholic Church does not have a specific moral

lesson, or traditional narrative for this day.

It is Eucharist

Yet, as the Catechism points out: thanksgiving characterizes

the prayer of the Church (CCC 2637). In fact, the word Eu-

charist means thanksgiving, and the Eucharist is the source

and summit of the whole Christian life. Giving thanks is at

the core of who we are as Catholics.

As Catholic Americans, we have a responsibility (to God, to

the world, and to future generations) to bring Christ to our

culture or more specifically to be “other Christs” within that

culture. We should be encouraging any part of the American

culture that affirms God and His plan for us. Thanksgiving

Day is one part of our culture that does this.

Certainly, in this time of political unrest and confusion, we

as Americans need to focus our minds and hearts on God,

and on His Divine Providence. Our country will not be

saved by any one president, or any political party. It will be saved

only by God and by the prayers of its citizens. The Catechism re-

minds us that “love and service of one’s country follow from the

duty of gratitude and belong to the order of charity” (CCC 2239).

Begin a Renewal

Out of love for our country, let us make this Thanksgiving Day a true

act of public thanksgiving and prayer. For many of us, inviting

friends and family over is about as public as we get on Thanksgiving

Day. However, that is just public enough to begin a renewal of our

American culture.

If at all possible, attending Mass would be a good way to celebrate

this day. Perhaps we can make a special effort to set aside prayer

time during the normal celebration of the day, before dinner or after.

One way to do this is to have a Liturgy of the Word (a group of read-

ings done just as we do at Mass using all the same responses, if pos-

sible. The Liturgy of the Word below is a suggestion.) At the very

least, a public reading of George Washington’s proclamation, which

began this article, would set the tone for the day.

Whatever we do, let’s make a special effort to publicly turn to God

this Thanksgiving Day and praise Him for all the favors He has be-

stowed on this country and to ask Him for His continued guidance

and care, especially in the difficult times ahead.
