fter 11 months of planning, fundraising and construc-tion, the new and improved Doda Memorial Plaza has

been completed. The centerpiece is the large bronze plaque which commemorates the many accomplishments of both Shirley and Victor Doda, Sr. The plaque is mounted on a pink and white Precambrian (>540 million year old) marble boulder and surrounded by a circle of river rocks.

More than 100 residents and local businesses contributed a total of $14,000 to make the creation of this monument possible. Many people don’t realize that Latrobe Park is pri-marily maintained and improved through the efforts of com-munity volunteers rather than by the City government.

The effort to rebuild the Doda Memorial was an all-volun-teer effort. The following individuals generously donated a great deal of their time and effort in order to guarantee the project’s success.

Special recognition goes to: Kevin Gaughan, the landscape architect who drew up the

hese pictures, taken in the early morning here in our neighborhood, re-mindmeof thebenefitsofbeautybeyondbringingsmiles toour facesand in our hearts.

Did you know that every tree we plant provides nearly 260 pounds of oxygen each year? Two mature trees can provide enough oxygen for a family of four.Everypieceoftrashwepickupandpreventfromflowingintotheharborand

bayreduces"marinedebris",whichiswhat theEPAcalls trash inestuaries. When trash is not recycled or properly disposed of on land, it can become ma-rine debris. For example, trash in the streets can wash into sewers, storm drains,

or inland rivers and streams when it rains and can be car-ried to oceans and coastal waters.

So, enjoying life in Locust Point can be more beautiful and healthier for us all if we, as a community, take the ex-tra time to pull weeds, pick up street trash and debris, and plant more flowers andtrees.

The 1400 block of Fort Avenue in 1904. This picture was taken in the winter but the shiny white areas are the scrubbed marble steps, not snowdrifts. There is a store in the last building on the right. The road appears to be unpaved but there are streetcar tracksinview.Thefirehouseistotheleftandinthebackground.

The 1400 block of Fort Avenue in 2015. This block of Fort Avenue still has marble steps at each house but they aren’t as sparkly white as they were 111 years ago. Some of the brick fronts have been covered with formstone but the windows and doors look much the same. The 1904 Locust Point residents would have loved to have one of those window air conditioners.
