to defend the United States from

high-consequence zoonotic diseases.

Founded in April 2004 as a DHS

Center of Excellence, the FAZD

Center leverages the resources of:

8 major universities.

10 Minority Serving Institutions.

5 National Laboratories.

Zoonotic diseases are

transmissible between humans

and animals.

At least 60 percent of all

human pathogens are zoonotic.

About 75 percent of all

emerging and contagious

human diseases started as

animal diseases.

risks to the nation’s public

health as well as to its $1

trillion agriculture economy.

These high-consequence

zoonotic diseases may be

introduced to the U.S.

naturally or accidently.

Some may be used as

weapons against the U.S.

the nation’s needs for

detection, diagnosis,

prevention and recovery:

• Vaccines & anti-virals.

• Detection / diagnostic tests.

• Universal platforms.

The FAZD Center designs

Information and Analysis

Systems to enhance

decision-making during

disease outbreaks:

• Computer models.

• Online dashboard systems.

• Epidemiologic and

economic analyses.

The FAZD Center creates the

next generation of science

power through its Education

and Outreach Systems:

• Graduate-level curricula.

• Early responder training

programs.

• Stakeholder outreach

programs.
