Mission San Jose A Moment of History ...

In 1739, the San Antonio area had an outbreak of mea-sles and small pox. Many of the mission Indians died while others fled. The missionaries also became ill. Mission San Jose was especially affected. The Indian population was reduced from around 300 to 49.

In the Spring of 1740, although still recovering from illness, Fr. Nunez and his assistant began making trips to persuade former mission Indians and new ones to return to mission life. Due to their efforts, by the end of 1740, Fr. Nunez had successfully raised San Jose’s population to 249.
