Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Christmas is Here
As you read this it is less than 72 hours to yet another Christmas – the celebration of the birth of the One and only Savior of the human race, Jesus Christ our Lord. Let me wish each and every parishioner of Crucifixion, Holy Rosary and St. Pius V parishes a blessed, joyful and safe Christmas celebration. Years of experience tells us that, this celebration never and will never get old, and it should not because it is the dawn of salvation. Merry Christmas to one and all!!! One personality that is also part of the Christmas event is Joseph, the husband of Mary. Today’s gospel gives us a glimpse into his life and thought about what was unfolding right before his eyes. Personally, I think Joseph receives very little credit overall for his assigned role as foster father of Jesus, especially in today’s context of the Christmas celebration. Like Mary we cannot talk about the Incarnation without reference to Joseph. “To the shepherds, the angel announced the birth of Jesus as the Messiah promised to Israel: ‘To you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’ From the beginning he was ‘the one whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world’, conceived as ‘holy’ in Mary’s virginal womb. God called Joseph to ‘take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit’, so that Jesus, ‘who is called Christ’, should be born of Joseph’s spouse into the messianic lineage of David. (CCC, 437)
“The Gospel accounts understand the virginal conception of Jesus as a divine work that surpasses all human understanding and possibility: ‘That which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit’, said the angel to Joseph about Mary his fiancée. The Church sees here the fulfillment of the divine promise given through the prophet Isaiah: ‘Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son.’ (CCC, 497)
“But the one name that contains everything is the one that the Son of God received in his incarnation: JESUS. The divine name may not be spoken by human lips, but by assuming our humanity The Word of God hands it over to us and we can invoke it: ‘Jesus,’ ‘YHWH saves.’ The name ‘Jesus’ contains all: God and man and the whole economy of creation and salvation. To pray ‘Jesus’ is to invoke him and to call him within us. His name is the only one that contains the presence it signifies. Jesus is the Risen One, and whoever invokes the name of Jesus is welcoming the Son of God who loved him and who gave himself up for him.” (CCC, 2666) To Joseph was given the authority to name Him ‘Jesus’. What an awesome privilege and responsibility to be the conduit through which the most powerful of names was entrusted by the angel. Have a blessed and wonderful Christmas everyone! Fr. Bernardine

Putting our complete trust in the Lord without expecting
anything in return. Striving to put God first in all things and
follow Him wherever He may lead us. As we prepare for the
birth of our Lord, pray for the strength and courage to be a

The fifth commandment forbids the intentional
destruction of human life. Therefore, all citizens
and governments are obligated to work for the
avoidance of wars. Every act of war that is directed
toward total destruction of entire cities or vast areas
is a crime against God and humanity. Every effort
must be made to find compromise prior to beginning an armed
conflict. Likewise, there must be a possibility of a good outcome
for the common good of humanity.

Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love
Listening Session #1
Late last fall, the U.S. bishops published a pastoral letter, Open
Wide our Hearts, to draw attention to the sin of racism and call us
to action. In order to bring this call to the attention of the local
church, Bishop Estévez will host three “listening sessions on
racism.” Each gathering will address: an overview of the pastoral
letter, witness, and the sharing of positive actions that can be
taken in the diocese.
On January 12, 2020, Bishop Estévez will host the listening
session on racism and hearing parishioners on positive actions
that can be taken.
1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Crucifixion Parish Hall, Jacksonville. For more
