L R There are three interwoven themes in today’s readings: listening to God, faith vs. good works, and losing our life in order to nd it. How are they related? The Su ering Servant of Isaiah undergoes much distress and ridicule, but is able to bear it because he has listened to the promp ngs of God day a er day. The psalm tells us that God listens, too. God hears our prayers for help and is always ready to save us. As our faith deepens, so does our desire to do the works of jus ce and charity that build up the reign of God. God directs our ac ons in ways we o en cannot see, and we don’t always see the results. We are called upon in faith to trust that what we do is enough, and that willingness to listen to God’s promp ngs will lead us in the right way. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

T O T In this country, we do not name our churches “The Fourth Avenue Catholic Church,” but rather seek a patron saint or mystery of faith. We inherit this tradi on from an old Roman custom via medieval England. Interes ngly, that has not been the prac ce elsewhere, and parishes abroad o en do carry just the name of the neighborhood. In Ireland, the Roman (English) prac ces did not take hold, and so churches are known simply by the street they are on, or by a nickname. Saint Francis of Assisi in Dublin is o en called “Adam and Eve” a er a pub in the same street. The pub sign is an interes ng carving of our first parents, so they become patrons by default. Increasingly in the United States, we are seeing a familiar European pa ern emerge when a few churches, each bearing the name of a patron saint or mystery, are gathered into one parish that bears a di erent name. Thus, we might hear of a parish of “Midvalley City” comprised of Saint Mary, Saint Francis, and Saint Ursula churches. Once a church has been consecrated, its name may not normally be changed. There-fore, when parishes are merged, a new name is given to the parish, which may or may not be that of a heavenly patron, but the church buildings retain their names. In the process, we have lost sight of some worthy patrons of old, but have also seen new parishes open dedicated to twen eth-century saints like Edith Stein, Katharine Drexel and Mother Teresa. Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

T S ’ C Dear Brothers and Sisters:

Over the past few weeks, I have received a number of inquiries from parishioners who would like the parish to sign o on giving them a religious exemp on from receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. The short answer to this is that there is no such exemp on; the Catholic Church does not o er a religious exemp on from the vaccine.

The Catholic Church does not morally oppose vaccines in and of themselves and has never taught that the use of vaccines is morality wrong. Thus, there is no Catholic moral or religious objec on to vaccines in general (as, for example, the objec on Jehovah’s Witnesses have to receiving a blood transfusion).

Although taking vaccines is morally permi ed by the teaching of the Catholic Church, is there an objec on to the COVID-19 vaccine in par cular? The answer to this ques on may be found on the website of the Bishops of the United States (usccb.org). Simply put, a Catholic can morally and licitly receive all the COVID-19 vaccines currently available, although there are di erences between them. On moral grounds it is suggested to avoid the Johnson and Johnson vaccine and Astra Zeneca vaccines if another is available.

Ques ons regarding vaccine exemp ons (from a Catholic perspec ve) have to do with a secular civil liber es ques on: whether or not the government can require someone to show proof of vaccina on to be permi ed to do something. For example, it is well known that in New York State, vaccines are required for day care, pre-K, and all school a endance (e.g. Diphtheria and Tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine and Pertussis vaccine (DTaP or Tdap); Hepa s B vaccine; Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccine (MMR); Polio vaccine; Varicella (Chickenpox vaccine).

Some people are asking the Catholic Church to support a religious exemp on from the COVID-19 vaccines. This issue should be properly pursued on civil liber es grounds, or on the grounds of one’s “personal” beliefs, but not on the basis of the teachings of the Catholic Church. The Church cannot say that there is a “Catholic” religious objec on to the vaccine when one does not exist.

Much peace!

Rev. Fr. Thomas V. Doyle Pastor

Thank you to those who have already donated to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal. The assigned goal of the parish is $103,717.00. As of September 7th, we have reached 66% of our goal by having pledges in the amount of $68,288.08 and receiving $58,871.82 from 184 parishioners. Envelopes are available throughout the Church - pick one up, ll it out and drop it in the collec on basket. Thank you for your con nued support to the Diocese of Brooklyn and the Parish of the Good Shepherd.

Remembering 9/11 This weekend we will be celebra ng the 20th Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist a acks, and it is an anniversary that takes on special signi cance given the recent developments in Afghanistan. As it is every year, September 11th is a day of solemn remembrance for our na on, and especially for those of us in the New York metropolitan area, as we recall the terrorist a acks on our country, and par cularly the collapse of the Twin Towers in Manha an, and the resultant inconceivable loss of life in all the a acks. September 11th is a day forever seared into our hearts, our souls and our minds of those of us old enough to remember it. We must never, ever forget; never forget! Let us con nue to pray for all those who lost their lives, for their families, and for all the many brave rst responders and others who rushed to the scene on that day, and who con nued to labor at Ground Zero in the days, weeks, and months a erward. The e ects of that day con nue to be felt right down to the present day by so many. We must con nue to be united as Americans and take pride in our country and in our way of life. Most of all, we must never, ever forget the thousands of innocent people who lost their lives on that tragic day.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

May they rest in peace. Amen.

M A – W S 11/12 The Catholic Diocese of Bomadi is located in the rural areas of Delta State in the South-South of Nigeria. The Diocese of Bo-madi is being shepherded by Bishop Hyacinth Egbebo, MSP. Given that the Catholic faith is thriving in this area, and the harvest to God’s Kingdom is plen ful gives us all a cause for joy. However, the economic situa on of the people is deplor-able. The people have no access to potable water, roads, hos-pitals, schools and there is no electricity. There are li le or no job opportuni es in these rural areas. The people only de-pend on shing and a li le bit of farming with crude imple-ments as their main source of livelihood. Worst s ll is that the rivers are quite polluted from crude oil exploita on ac vi es. Hence, aqua c life has become gravely endangered. Most of the local popula on has their main source of drinking water from the polluted river. In order to convincingly preach about the love of God to the people of the diocese we have made some e ort at providing clean water for the local people in their predicaments and to save precious lives being lost to diseases related to bad drinking water. Your nancial help will make a lot of di erence to our present predicament. With prayerful wishes, I remain yours sincerely in Christ Jesus. +Most Reverend Hyacinth Egbebo, MSP
