IN-STATE BATTLE Mississippi State meets in-state foe Southern Mississippi for the 39th time overall. The Bulldogs own a 28-10 advantage and have won the last five meetings in the series. Under Jay Miller's guidance, State holds a 9-3 edge against the Golden Eagles. In Starkville, the Dogs have claimed a 13-6 edge in the series, and a 4-1 mark against USM at the MSU Softball Field under the seventh-year Bulldog head coach.

SUNSHINE CLASSIC Following Wednesday's game with Southern Mississippi, the Bulldogs hit the road for the first time this season, venturing to the Sunshine Classic in Tallahassee, Fla. State will be venturing to Tallahassee for the first time since the 2003 season, head coach Jay Miller's inau-gural season as the Bulldogs' head coach. MSU will meet No. 23 Purdue, Appalachian State, Miami (Ohio) and host Florida State in the event.

ROAD-OPENING SUCCESS The Maroon and White meets a tough challenge in Purdue in its first game of the year away from the MSU Softball Field. If history is any indication, however, the road opener has been good to the Bulldogs. In Miller's six seasons, State has never lost its road debut.

THREE IN A ROW? The Bulldogs will meet the Boilermakers for the third time. The two previous encounters came at the 2007 Bulldog Round-Robin in Starkville, with MState taking 6-5 and 8-1 victories.

TIGHT SERIES The Bulldogs close out the tournament against the host Seminoles. It will be the 10th meeting between the two clubs, with FSU holding a slim 5-4 advantage. Florida State took the last meeting in the series, a 4-2 victory at the 2007 NFCA Leadoff Classic. Prior to that, however, the Bulldogs have claimed the last four contests, including two in Tallahassee during the 2002 and 2003 seasons.

DOGS VS. REDHAWKS State will meet Miami of Ohio for the second time in program history. The first came during Miller's first season in Starkville, with the Bulldogs taking a 5-2 win in Las Cruces, N.M. The other team in the field, Appalachian State, is a new foe for MState. State has never met the Mountaineers, but it is 12-1 all-time against teams from the Southern Conference.

LAST TIME OUT Mississippi State opened the season hosting the Bulldog Round-Robin for the sixth time. State looked to make it six-for-six in claiming the championship, but it wasn't to be as a 4-0 setback to Kennesaw State in the season opener paved the way for Louisiana-Monroe to claim the title under a schedule that was altered due to travel plans. After dropping the 2009 opener, the Bulldogs responded to win three straight games, out-scoring its opponents 27-8.

ALL-TOURNEY DOGS The Bulldogs placed five players on the Bulldog Round-Robin all-tournament team. Freshmen Courtney Moore and Lindsey Dunlap received the honor along with juniors Chelsea Bramlett and Jessie Bailey, and senior pitcher Kelsey Nurnberg.

GOING FOR 221 State's 3-1 start to the season moves Miller's record in Starkville to 220-165. His 220 victories are tied with former Bulldog head coach Kathy Arendsen (1997-2000) for the most in MState softball annals.

JOINING ELITE COMPANY This past December, Miller was inducted into the NFCA Hall of Fame, placing him in elite SEC company. The seventh-year head coach became just the third coach from the league to earn a place in the Hall of Fame, joining his former mentor at Missouri, Joan Joyce of South Carolina, and LSU head coach Yvette Girouard.

MILLER TO REPRESENT USA Miller has been named one of 14 coaches in the USA Softball Women's National Team Coaching Pool. A veteran of USA Softball since the 1992-96 quadrennium, Miller is one of three SEC coaches in the pool along with Patrick Murphy (Alabama) and Jamie Pinkerton (Arkansas).

HIT PARADE In Sunday's 12-5 win over Louisiana-Monroe, the Bulldogs put together a 20-hit attack. That total ranks as the second-most hits in school history, falling a single hit shy of the school record set by the 1997 squad against Alabama State.

SWIPING THE RECORD State successfully stole 14 of 15 bases last weekend, with Bramlett leading the way with a perfect 9-for-9 mark that tops the Southeastern Conference. The Cordova, Tenn., native hit .533 with five runs scored, and she closed the weekend by stealing five bases against Louisiana-Monroe. Bramlett's five stolen bases on Sunday set a new single-game school record, bettering the previous record of four that she set as a freshman (2007) against South Carolina.

GRAND SLAM Junior Jessie Bailey led the Bulldogs to a win over Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday with her first home run of the year, a grand slam in the second inning. The grand slam was the second of the Lithonia, Ga., native's career, as she hit one against Georgia as a freshman. It's also the second straight year the Bulldogs have hit a grand slam in the opening weekend of the season. Chelsea Bramlett hit one against UC Riverside to kick off the 2008 season at the Cathedral City Kickoff.

SLAMMIN' SPAIN Sophomore Jessie Spain kicked off her 2009 season with a .500 weekend that included a 3-for-5 Sunday with a three-run home run and five RBIs. Her hits and RBI totals were both career highs.

IMPRESSIVE DEBUTS A pair of Bulldog newcomers enjoyed impressive debuts at the Bulldog Round-Robin. Freshman Courtney Moore led the team with a .545 average (6-for-11) that included a double, a triple, seven RBIs and a run scored. Rookie pitcher Lindsey Dunlap captured a win and a save in her inaugural appearances. The Hueytown, Ala., native allowed just three hits with six strikeouts and a walk in 6 2/3 innings. She tossed her first career shutout against Iona.

RECEIVING VOTES After advancing to as high as No. 15 last season, the 2009 Bulldogs open the year receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball top 25 polls. State will face its share of ranked opposition this season, as seven teams open the year ranked in the top 25, including three teams (Florida, Alabama and Michigan) in the top 10. Purdue joined the top 25 last week.

DOGS PICKED THIRD The Mississippi State softball team was selected third in the Western Division in the preseason poll of SEC coaches released last week. The Bulldogs, who were tabbed third for the second consecutive year, landed behind defending SEC West cham-pion Alabama and LSU. Florida was picked to win the Eastern Division and the overall title.

BRAMLETT WATCH-LISTED Bramlett was one of 12 players named to the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List. The Cordova, Tenn., native earned consideration for the award after advancing to the 25 finalists a year ago. Bramlett joins Iyhia McMichael as the only Bulldogs to earn a place on the list. McMichael also earned consideration twice, and she advanced to the top three in 2004 after earning top-10 recognition the year prior.

PRESEASON ALL-SEC In addition to being named to the USA Softball Player of the Year Watch List, Bramlett also earned Preseason All-SEC honors from the league coaches for the second straight year. The junior was tabbed the team's catcher after taking first-team All-SEC accolades last season and second-team honors as a freshman in 2007.

ESPN RECOGNIZES BRAMLETT Bramlett has been named a first-team all-American by the NFCA each of her first two collegiate seasons. The junior received a preseason all-America accolade this week from ESPN. She was selected the first-team catcher, joining six other conference players on the two squads. Bramlett was one of five named to the first team, while two others landed on the second team.
