Welcome to November/December Issue of Mix Magazine! As you will see by a simple flick through this month’s issue of Mix Magazine the town has been out and about in force, whether supporting our local rugby team, attending a book signing, running along Nabq promenade in Sharm’s first ever “Race for Life” or wrapping up and heading to one of the many Eid party events.

Also this month we have a great article on the evolution of the Camel Bar and a look at one of Sharm’s hottest new Spas.

Whilst putting the magazine together, we had so many great photos to select from this month’s diary of pictures that it was hard to choose which ones to show you………….. So please brew yourself a nice cuppa or pour yourself a drink and enjoy! After all “pictures truly speak louder than words”.

Whether a visiting tourist or a long term resident, Mix magazine urges you to get involved. Sharm’s community welcomes all!

In Sharm we have many different Spa companies operating inside hotels, however very few actu-ally have standalone Spas which are accessible and affordable for the passer by, whether that’s a jolly tourist or a Sharm resident in need of a little preening.

A five minutes stroll from Il Mercato, in the direction of Bank Street you will find Kian Mall and inside this mall you will find one of these rare Sharm Spas – Golden Spa. After a great deal of renovation and redesign, Golden Spa opened just over a month ago. The Mall originally held a traditional marble Turkish Spa, which has now been fitted with all of the modern facilities expected in a five star spa.

The actual building structure is beautiful; the spa has an impres-sive vast open reception area with a golden dome in its centre, which sits above a wide grand spiral staircase and from which you go down into the spa itself.

The Spa’s speciality amongst the usual massages and beauty treatments is a 60 minute Turk-ish Spa experience. A Turkish

bath is distinguished by a focus on water. In Western Europe, the “Turkish bath” as a method of cleansing

and relaxing became popular during the Victorian era. The process involved in taking a Turkish bath is similar to that of a sauna, but is more closely related to ancient Greek and ancient Roman bathing prac-tices.

Traditionally a person taking a Turkish bath first relaxes in a room (known as the warm room) that is heated by a continuous flow of hot dry air allowing the bather to per-spire freely. Bathers may then move over to an even hotter room (known as the hot room) before splashing themselves with cold water. At Golden Spa, the first ten minutes of your hour is spent showering and relaxing in one of their two large saunas. This starts

the bathing process by releasing all of the impurities from your skin as the heat and perspiration opens up your pours ready for the next stage.

Your next 40 minutes is spent in the “Hammam” itself, a large marble tiled room with heated marble beds. You are greeted with your “Tellek”, the masseur who first dry scrubs you with a Moroccan “Maraqa” which is a kind of pumas mitten. After washing off any ex-cess dirt, your Tellek then lays you on the warm mar-ble where he or she soaps your entire body, again they use a special soap imported from morocco, which is rich in jasmine oil…….. As you can see in the pic-ture above, you are immerged in bubbles; it really is the most relax-ing and cleansing experience. You are then massaged to release any tension and stress and then finally washed clean, all with the greatest of care.

Your skin is left squeaky clean, com-pletely rid of any dead cells or dry patch-es. A great way to clear up any blotches, imperfections or old tan lines.

The final stage is a relaxing dip in Golden Spa’s fancy Jacuzzi; the water is luke warm to allow your body to return to its normal temperature level. Afterwards, you are encouraged to relax on one of the many day beds, allowing your body to gently regain equilibrium. As in any good Spa, a selection of herbal teas and fresh juices are available or a simple complimentary glass of water to rehydrate your skin.

A one hour Turkish Spa Experience costs $35, resi-dent discount is available at 25% which equates to a total price for residents of 225le. Opening hours are 9am until 9pm

Last Saturday 12th November saw t2 Pub, beside the Rock hotel in hadaba, buzzing with excitement as claudio di Manao introduced the new english version of his proclaimed book “Shamandura Gen-eration” to the local dive community along with his close friends and loyal fans.

The book which is a “practical-essential guide for diving instructors, tourists and other good-for-nothing in warm climates” is a real and humorous portrait of Sharm el Sheikh’s diving community.

Claudio Di Manao had a projector from which amusing cartons form the book were shown. Barbara Ferri who translator the book, which was previously published in Italian also read a few passages - including a funny take on Padi!

As a former columnist for Mix Magazine, we want to wish Claudio all the best with his future work. The book “Shamandura Generation” really is a charming read and will be available at well known local dive centers.

Race For Life a Great Success!!the Race for Life organisers along with the cairo 57357 hospital would like to take the opportunity to thank all the local businesses and hotels for their support.

The race’s main sponsors were Soho Square, who do-nated holidays and meals at some of their five star res-taurants, even the management team from Soho came down to take part in the race themselves! The holidays were auctioned off from Savoy and also Coral Sea, plus day trips out and restaurant vouchers from other sponsors raising over £1,000 for the 57357 charity!

The race itself, which took place along the glorious prom-enade of Nabq bay was won by John Doel with a finishing time of 28 mins, 2nd was Ritchie from the Holiday Village team and 3rd was Erik Van Straten.

Many residents and guests showed their support along the beach front for the runner, starting with the registration party at the Royal Grand Azure, the Tropicana Seabeach, Grand Azure Hotel and Club Magic Life. At the finishing line everyone enjoyed a cold drink and a party atmos-phere at the Jaz Mirabel Beach. 147 runners took part and raised a whooping total of £7000 online for Cancer Research UK and £5,000 for the Cairo Cancer Hospital.

Thanks must also be given to Bus Stop Nabq for host-ing the fundraising after party. As a result of the fantastic amount of money raised and the sheer enjoyment had by all - plans are already in place for next year’s Race for Life!

Mix Magazine hopes it will be even bigger and better!

the halloween Party at La Strada on Friday 28th oc-tober was definitely a night to remember. The bright lights stung the performer’s eyes as they stepped onto the stage, I should know I was one of them.

We were the Glee Club of La Strada. We sang “The lion sleeps tonight” from the Lion king and “Time warp” from the Rocky Horror Show. After that was Flash Forward En-tertainment. I cheered at the top of my voice for my two friends Malak Mohab and Luna Hisham as they danced to “Judas” by Lady Gaga and “Ghost” by Michael Jackson.

After that we sat down as the ballet was finishing up when Ms. Naomi (the instructor for Flash Forward Dance Acad-emy) announced to the people that wanting to be in the break dance competition, that it would be starting in five minutes. Malak and I ran to Ms. Naomi and signed up.

Five minutes later the break dance competition started. The competition was organized into rounds. The first round was Malak and I against two boys. We never thought we would win, but win we did, so thus we went on to the semi finals.

We danced our way through each round and successfully into the final, shocked and excited we were not going to give up. As the music ended the crowd had to vote for the best team. When Ms. Naomi said “Malak and Noor” my heart skipped a beat. The screams and cheers were amazingly loud, even my enemies were screaming their lungs out for us to win. We won by a mile and were proud-ly called the best break dancers in Nabq and Sharm el Sheikh.

But the show wasn’t over yet, Ms. Anta’s Fit and Fun Mon-day class were performing next, I had to move fast to my place for the show. I crouched in my position behind my friend Charlie Elgin. We finished the song with our posses. We had to move fast again because the Wednesday class was right after us. They were dancing to “Imma Be” by the Black Eyed Peas, it was the perfect way to finish the show!

Playing balls French Style! by Yann Vautrin

What happens when a british Islander (“angry tony”) and a French breton (Yann) both long ter-mers in Sharm are having a chat around a glass of Pastis ?

they come up with this strange idea to setup a friendly Petanque club next to their favourite Pub!

If you are unfamiliar with Petanque rules and terminol-ogy, here are the basics of this famous French boules game! Rules:- Petanque comes from the old French expression “Pieds Tanques”, meaning both feet have to touch the ground until the ball reaches the floor.- A Petanque pitch consists of a limited hard sand area of at least 10m x 3m.- The aim of the game is to throw your balls closer to the jack than your opponents do.- Petanque can be played by teams of 1, 2 or 3 players.Lexicon:- “Cochonnet” : “Jack” in English, a small wooden ball (between 25mm and 35mm diameter) that serves as a target for the game.- “Tirer” : action to knock off your opponent ball with your own.- “Pointer” : action to place your ball accurately next to the jack by throwing it high with a bit of backspin.- “Fanny”: losing by scoring 0 point.Rules having been set, pitches having been built and raked, we were just missing the Petanque balls!

A few good willing diving guests from France, despite the airflight baggage allowance restrictions, agreed to bring some of those Petanque sets (a ball has to weigh between 650g and 800g a piece to comply with the in-ternational rules). In addition thanks to some goodwill help, a proper lighting system was put in place allowing us to be able to play at night and thus we were ready to start!

The first Sharm El sheikh – Tavern Bar 2 Petanque Tournament took place on Tuesday, August 23rd 2011 and the foundation of the “Sharm Pufferfishes Petanque Club”! With an average of 24 participants weekly, this social event gathers people from all ages, nationality and profession in a friendly and relaxed at-mosphere.

Saturday, October 15th 2011, saw the first of all times “Oktoberfest Petanque Tournament” where balls were thrown on the pitch and “Bratwurst-Sauerkraut” sand-wiches were eaten amongst the public!

The “Club” is open to everyone, a game costs 20LE for the evening or become a full member for 100 LE a year! Please join us every Tuesday, from 6pm at the Tavern Bar 2 and watch out for our facebook group (“Sharm Petanque Club”) for upcoming events!

time to shine your balls! See you very soon!

the Sharks had beaten their last op-ponents by 27 points to nil in their previous match at the concord. this time, the Sharks were up against a more experienced side as most of the old alssonian side had played to-gether for five years.

It was a testament to the progress that Sharm Sharks have made when the home team took control of the game early on with their powerful for-wards, dominating the scrums.

The more experienced players of Dave Summerfield, Dave Griffiths, John Denning and Nathan Daley all per-forming well to help the newer players develop their game. There are many new players to rugby develop-ing nicely. Devin Mergl is improving every game and although he had played American football at College level back in the states, the different running angles and positional play he has picked up very quickly.

Another fast developing player is forward Waleed Alshemam. He was man of the match in Sharks pre-vious game against the Eagles. Waleed has been tipped for an Egyptian trial by former Egypt Rugby coach Chris Beal.

Man of the match for this game was Will Lambert, who is the Golf professional at Stella Di Mare Hotel in Naama. New to rugby, Will is totally hooked on the game and can’t get enough of it. His tremendous work rate putting his newly found skills into practice earned him MOTM this game. come and support the Sharm Sharks in our next

MIX - November ‘11 - December ‘11

Page 28: Mix Mag 2011

All ingredients available at 247 Supermarket!

This great chilli has to be one of the best dishes to serve to friends for a casual get-together or for a warming family meal. all ingredients can be found at your local 24/7 supermarket.

Cooking time 50 mins - 1 hourserves 4ingredients1 tbsp oil 1 large onion 1 red pepper 2 garlic cloves , peeled 1 heaped tsp hot chilli powder (or 1 level tbsp if you only have mild) 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp ground cumin 500g lean minced beef 1 beef stock cube 400g can chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp tomato purée 410g can red kidney beans

preparation method 1. Prepare your vegetables. Chop your onion into small dice, about 5mm square. Cut your pepper in half lengthways, remove stalk and wash the seeds away, then chop. 2. Put your pan on the hob over a medium heat. Add the oil and leave it for 1-2 minutes until hot. Add the onions and cook, stirring fairly frequently, for about 5 minutes. Tip in the garlic, red pepper, chilli, paprika and cumin. Give it a good stir, then leave it to cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. Turn the heat up a bit, add the meat to the pan and break it up with your spoon or spatula. Keep stirring and

prodding for at least 5 minutes. Make sure you keep the heat hot enough for the meat to fry and become brown, rather than just stew. 4. Crumble your stock cube into 300ml/1⁄2 pint of hot water. Pour this into the pan with the mince mixture. Open the can of chopped tomatoes and add. Add a good shake of salt and pepper. Squirt in about 2 tbsp of tomato purée and stir the sauce well. 5. Simmer it gently. Bring the whole thing to the boil, give it a good stir and put a lid on the pan. Turn down the heat until it is gently bubbling and leave it for 20 minutes. You should check on the pan occasionally to stir it and make sure the sauce doesn’t catch on the bottom of the pan or isn’t drying out. If it is, add a couple of tablespoons of water and make sure that the heat really is low enough. After simmering gently, the saucy mince mixture should look thick, moist and juicy. 6. Drain and rinse the beans in a sieve and stir them into the chilli pot. Bring to the boil again and gently bubble without the lid for another 10 minutes, adding a little more water if it looks too dry. Taste a bit of the chilli and season. Now replace the lid, turn off the heat and leave your chilli to stand for 10 minutes before serving and relax. Leaving your chilli to stand is really important as it allows the flavours to mingle with the meat.

serving suggestions Pile the chilli mixture onto a bed of plain, boiled rice, with a spoonful of soured cream on top. Or eat with tortilla chips and a sprinkle of grated cheddar. Alternatively wrap it up in a tortilla with shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes and guacamole for a great burrito. Yummy!!

MIX - November ‘11 - December ‘11

Are you one of the many residents who’s left sharm el Sheikh to try a new life elsewhere, only to find yourself drawn back to live here? or a visitor, who’s tried other destinations but inevitably returns to sharm? It’s hard to put your finger on exactly why Sharm exerts such a pull; we just know that, at some point in the future, we’ll be back!

Camel Bar holds a similar attraction. Anyone who’s lived in or visited Sharm will have been to Camel Bar and although we may not visit for a while, sooner or later we know we’ll be back in Sharm’s original drinking den.

Let’s take a look at how Sharm’s historical watering-hole has changed and grown over the years.

late 1990sA remodelled Camel Bar opens its doors with Chris at the helm, Pete assisting and Roxy the Alsatian, as chief bouncer. Sharm is still mainly a diver’s town. Each day when the dive boats have dropped their passengers back at the jetty, tanks have been unloaded and dive boxes stored, the ‘end of the day’ ritual begins: up to Camel Bar for a Sakara (or six), pea-nuts and a catch-up with Chris, followed later on by… peanut fights, and even later... by dancing on the bar - mainly to Camel Bar’s anthems ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ and ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’. Diving careers are launched here too – your repu-tation as a new Divemaster depends upon your performance in The Funnel.

Mid ‘00sSharm has expanded rapidly and is now the preserve of ‘sun, sand and Sakara’ tourists, although divers still make their pres-ence felt in the Bar. The era of Camel Bar’s infamous themed parties has begun, with Mike assisted by Pete, Carrol and Jo. Will we ever forget the ‘P’ party, or Tash and Sue’s nurses out-fits?!? While the party goes on downstairs, the Roof Bar has transformed itself from the ‘90s space to hang out on Bedouin carpets on the floor watching the weekly movie, into a proper bar, complete with sofas and chill out music. Whether we like it or not, Sharm’s transition into a more sophisticated town is underway!

late ‘00sWith flights landing from over 20 countries every day, Sharm is a fully fledged resort and its visitors now expect more than just cold beer, although that’s still welcome! Marcia introduces a new Texan-inspired cocktail menu (which I enjoyed taste-testing!); perfect for sipping at sunset in Camel’s new Terrace bar. Live music draws Friday night crowds to the main Bar, under the guidance of Akram and team, and leads to some unmissable (and sweaty!) nights – with bands like Screwdriver and high-energy Brazilian band Napal standing out in our col-lective memories.

early 2010s and todaySharm is still growing, as is the crowd in Camel Bar, which remains as cosmopolitan as ever. Moving with the times , the main Bar has a funky modern décor but it still remains the best place to watch big sports games in air-conditioned comfort, croon to your heart’s content with karaoke, or love the Latin rhythms on Tropical Nights. For people-watching or simply chilling out, there’s still no better place to kick back and relax than on the Roof or Terrace with a long, cool drink and tasty bar meal. Rob, Dorothy, Percie, Nick and the rest of the team will make you feel as welcome as in the ‘old days’, and look forward to celebrating with you during the upcoming festive season!

Yet again Camel Bar hosted a massive spooky Hal-loween Party with Live Music from the Band “Screw-driver” who played classic rock, funky pop, and blues all with an energetic twist until the early hours!

Many tourists along with locals got into the spirit by dressing up for the event in all kinds of gruesome and ghastly costumes!

Welcome to Wind Beach Club, Helnan Marina, naama Bay!

The Beach has reinvented itself as the new hottest place to be spotted and snapped during the day.

Powered by Pacha Sharm, the beach club offers sea, sand and entertainment provided exclusively by Pacha nightclub. During the Eid Feast, the beach hosted not only Pacha resident DJs but also on Monday 6th “Crash Boom Bang”; the high energy music group who played a funky mix of disco, rock and Latin.

Then on Wednesday 9th, Mix Magazine was lucky enough to catch “Salalem” a diverse musically influ-enced band. They played easy listening, rhythmical jazz and rock, with some catchy lyrics that got everyone humming along.

Whats on @ little Buddha.......

Chocolate Puma flew over to Egypt especially to play in little Buddha sharm el sheikh on tuesday 8th novem-ber and Hurghada on Wednesday 9th November.

The legendary Dutch DJ duo – Zki and Dobre or as written in their passports Gaston Steenkist and Rene Horst, sat down with Mix Magazine before their Sharm gig to answer some questions.

The arty, funky DJs were immensely charming, relaxed and chatted with ease! Cheers Guys………….

Q: I’m sure you get asked this question over and over again, but please, Mix is too curious not to ask, why Chocolate Puma? Where did the name come from?

A: When launching “I want to be you” ten years ago we need-ed to come up with a new alias, and Chocolate Puma is what we named ourselves and the name stuck. Sometimes when asked, we make up stories about our dog being called Puma and falling into a bath of Chocolate! But really, the name is just two random words………….. Plus Chocolate Puma is great when we’re doing art work and stuff.

Q: I hear your trip to Egypt is a whistle stop tour, shame you can’t stay longer! How is it being on the road so much?

A: We love what we do, so a little time hanging out in airports, flying and travel is all part of the deal. We fly to Hurghada as soon as we’ve finished up here!

Q: And after Hurghada where are you off to?

A: We’re off to Croatia to play at Mansion in Zagreb, should be cool. Then back to the Netherlands, playing Jazz A Delic in Terneuzen and in two weeks time we’re playing in Ministry of Sound, London.

Q: Back home in the studio what have you guys got going on?

A: We actually have a new label “Psst” which is released to-morrow; the new track which we’re now promoting is “Tragito

De Ron” with Greg Salto. We also have collaborations with West Beach which we are playing around with and also will be working with DJ Ray.

Q: It’s close to the 1am mark! So, good luck- and Gaston and Rene, thanks so much for your time.

A: No problem, hope you enjoy........

you know what? enjoy we did!

Up first for Eid on Monday 8th was hot DJ Mac, one of Egypt’s Top ranking DJs, who hit the decks hard and played some of the music scenes latest floor fillers to get the party started. Next was Deejay Samer, sur-prising the crowd by an impromptu set.

Tuesday 9th saw DJ Mourizio Gubellini, one of Italy’s best loved DJs, who played a great mix of Electro house and hard house remixes.

Not only did Toda Joia fill the air with great dance music, but the club had a chance to show off it new laser and lighting rig, the green and blue lights and special effects danced in time with the sassy go-go dancers and party goers!

The Swiss performer, who was the winner of the seventh season of the hit reality TV show Star Academy France, danced, sung, played his keyboard and even jumped up on stage. His magnetic performance was a sure crowd pleaser. His music ranged from electro, hard house, a remix of some beetles classics and “we will rock you” for good measure!!
