May 4 - 8 Focus: Writing an Explanatory EssayThis week focuses on writing an essay on the following prompt: Write to explain what it takes to have superhuman strength.

Day 1 English Language ArtsWriting & Reading

You’ll be writing an essay on this topic: Write to explain what it takes to have superhuman strength.

Today’s Work: Read the articles and underline or highlight evidence that could be used in your essay about what it takes to have superhuman strength. Begin thinking about ideas from the texts that explain what it takes to have superhuman strength.

Superhuman Strength ArticlesSource 1: Super MenBy Jason Kalani

Super Fighters

When considering a modern-day superhero with super strength and a variety of fighting skills, look no further than mixed martial arts fighters. These talented athletes combine boxing, kicking, and grappling skills to create an all-around ultimate fighter. The two most popular competitions that spotlight these athletes are Bellator MMA and the UFC. The Ultimate Fighting Championship is the most known and most popular of the mixed martial arts events, and it celebrates men and women from countries all over the world.

One of these fighters shows his strength in and out of the octagon ring, and if you ever need a firefighter, this is the guy to call. Stipe Miocic is the current heavyweight champion inthe UFC and most likely in the world. He is incredibly talented in the ring as he demonstrates his strength in both boxing and grappling, yet he spends his time out of the ring watching over others. Even with all of his fame, Miocic still remains in hispart-time job working as a fireman. He saved a woman’s life during one of the emergency calls in between his scheduled fights –this is something that a super hero would do while taking care of people during the day and competing in the ring at night.

Super Strength

There are times when ordinary people do extraordinary things, and a temporary gift of superpower strength engulfs them. For instance, Scientific American explains how an ordinary man lifted a car. The article, “When Fear Makes Us Superhuman,” describes how one man saved a bicycle rider who was trapped under a car. Tom Boyle Jr. witnessed an accident where a car ran into a young man on a bicycle, and the car dragged him until the driver stopped. Boyle saw the wreck and immediately ran to help the young man trapped under the car. For 45 seconds, Boyle lifted and held the car up until the young man was free from being trapped under the wheel. The article explains that although Boyle was a strong guy, lifting 3,000 pounds and holding it for that long is all but impossible. Adrenaline, a stress hormone, is related to the human “fight or flight” response to a perceived threat. According to the Hormone Health Network, in addition to fueling this superhuman strength, adrenaline triggers a rapid heartbeat and sends impulses to organs to create a specific response.

Strongman Competitions

Many people already have incredible strength, but they work hard to gain and maintain that super strength. This takes not only physical but also mental stamina to endure training for these events. Strongman competitions, also called strength athletics, test the strength of people in several areas through many physical challenges –one such event, the World’s Strongest Man event, takes place every year in both the United States and the UK. Men from all over the world compete to see who the strongest man in the world is, and the events make most people cringe when thinking about what the competitors are doing. In one event, a contestant pulls an object with a rope in a sitting position –there are no gloves and just a wooden block for their legs to use for support. They are not pulling tiny baskets full of cute little kittens –they are pulling items like boats, planes, and enormous tractor tires. One of the most

impressive shows of strength is seen in the event named “Fridge Carry.” Yep, they are carrying a refrigerator –not one, but two. Participants have one minute to complete the course while carrying both refrigerators –it might be nice to have one of these guys around to help you move.

Another strength athletic event is the Strongman competition –incredibly strong men and women compete in a variety of activities that demonstrate their strength. Watching this competition is like viewing ancient gladiators, loaded with the strength of Hercules or Athena, pick up refrigerators and giant tires with ease. In one activity, contestants deadlift, or stand still picking up an item –they may be lifting an extreme weight of dumbbells, or it might be large tires. The current deadlift record is held by Hafþór Björnsson –he is also known as “The Mountain” from the Game of Thrones drama series. This mountain of a man from Iceland set the record by lifting 1,041 pounds . . . that is over half a ton.

World’s Strongest Women

All those guys out there who think that they are incredibly strong lifting a couple hundred pounds, step aside for Becca Swanson –this strong woman bench presses over 500 pounds and deadlifts over 600 pounds. Swanson is not only a power lifter, but she is also a body builder and a wrestler. Tiny does not mean weak, and Chen Wei-Ling has proven this over and over again in powerlifting. Wei-Ling weighs roughly 102 pounds and is about 4 feet 11 inches tall, yet she can lift her body weight many times over. Just a few years ago, she completed a single-squat lift of 462 pounds, deadlifted 385 pounds, and bench pressed 231 pounds. That is truly a super woman.

Strongman Competition Training for Women

Liefia Ingalls started as a CrossFit athlete who created her own strength training equipment for use in her backyard. Eventually, she became the first-ever Arnold Pro Strongwoman Champion, but it wasn’t just her physical strength that contributed to her success. “The 28-year-old is an avid studier and makes lists after every competition of mistakes made, regardless if she wins. “I didn’t just know how to move,” said Ingalls, who had no athletic background up through college. “I had to learn how to get strong by analyzing the movement and studying how to make it improve. That’s kind of what has helped me close the gap as a competitor.” A serious “passion for fitness” combined with a “competitive edge” is what’s enticing women to participate in training for Strongman competitions. Alyssa Ages is from NYC and fits the mold for typical fitness aficionada; however, it’s not as obvious that she spends her free time strength training with a group of women that share her motivation and mental drive. Workouts include throwing kegs, dragging metal chains, raising logs above their heads, and deadlifting hundreds of pounds. “There’s this movement of women wanting to be strong and lift heavy weights,” says Ages. “There’s a unique sense of accomplishment in saying, ‘Today I flipped a tire.’ Every time I go to the gym I impress myself.”

Super Strength

In another incredible case of super strength, a woman saved her son’s life with her superpower strength. Psychology Today, in the article “Tapping into Our Super-Strength with Adrenaline,” tells the story of Angela Cavallo and her son Tony. Cavallo’s son was working under his car when it slipped and trapped him under the car –he was soon unconscious and unable to yell for help. When Tony’s mother saw this, she lifted the car, which weighs about 3,500 pounds, and reached under the car to pull her son out before placing the car back down on the ground. The explanation for this amazing super strength power comes from a natural process that our body uses when it comes under attack or stress –it is also called the “fight or flight” response. Our bodies release adrenaline, a hormone, in times of extreme stress or excitement. When adrenaline enters the blood stream, the muscles receive more oxygen, the heart beats faster, and blood pressure increases. All of these physical reactions within the body create a temporary state of extreme strength, but what people do with that strength differs. For Cavallo, her inner strength and bravery brought them to the aid of her son before her superpower even kicked in to help.

Source 3: Combined StrengthBy Luke Windham

Strength can be both mental and physical, and at times it combines both. Ordinary people display strength every day as they deal with a variety of difficult tasks.

Physical Strength

Since the day of the gladiator, people have been competing to see who the strongest person in the village is. People have been lifting heavy objects to see who is stronger for thousands, if not millions, of years. Scholars vary on the history of weightlifting. Some experts date evidence of lifting weights to before 300B.C. when men in the military had to pass tests to see how strong they were by lifting heavy weights. In 1896, weightlifting became an Olympic sport in Athens, Greece. In more modern times, weightlifters like Hafþór Björnsson and Becca Swanson lift incredible amounts of weight. Björnsson holds the world record for lifting 1,041 pounds. Swanson holds the record for lifting over 600 pounds. Weightlifting and physique contribute to physical strength, but so does fear. From an editor’s note on Scientific America, “The following is an excerpt from Extreme Fear: The Science of Your Mind in Danger by Jeff Wise. Extreme Fear explores the neural underpinnings of this powerful and primitive emotion by relating instances in which people were forced to act under duress and presenting the latest findings from cognitive science.” It goes on to share an excerpt from the chapter entitled "Superhuman" a seemingly ordinary man performs an extraordinary feat of strength to rescue a cyclist who has been run over by a car.” In 2016, a father in Virginia couldn’t believe what his 19-year-old daughter was able to do to save his life. Trapped under a burning car, she was able to lift it enough for him to escape and then saved the rest of her family from a rampant fire. How does fear power superhuman strength? A hormone, adrenaline, is responsible; “adrenaline’s effect on muscles accounts for amazing strength. Adrenaline acts on muscles, allowing them to contract more than they can when the body is in a calm or neutral state.” Good to know our body is on point to prepare us for danger ahead when needed.

Mental Strength

Just getting through daily life can be a struggle or make you feel like you are pushing a giant boulder uphill, but once you step outside of your own life, you may see the strength of others. Inner strength is a mental choice that keeps people going in times of hardship and trauma. This inner strength is seen in first responders, the people who are the first to show up to disasters or accidents –people like EMT personnel, firefighters, military soldiers, and SWAT teams. Although these people may or may not be physically strong, they are mentally strong since they move toward trouble to help others while most people are running the other way. A report from Harvard Health Publishing explains that inner strength can help people live happier and longer lives. In the Harvard Health Publishing report, “Positive Psychology: Harnessing the power of happiness, mindfulness, and inner strength,” it discusses how keeping a positive attitude combined with inner strength can help people through very tough times. People who cope well with life’s hardships are less stressed, and people with less stress live longer. Inner strength is what pushes people to ignore bullies and to decide

Page 7: M/J Language Arts 3, Regular and Advanced  · Web view2020-04-21 · In "Avengers: Infinity War," the latest superhero smash-em-up, Captain America, Iron Man and company face off

to be who they are, regardless of what others say. The field of psychology says that people who have this inner strength display psychological resilience, or the ability to cope no matter what the circumstance may be. This character trait of resilience is found in people who survive childhood trauma, live through abuse, or go through extremely difficult hardships. A person with inner strength and resilience moves on after life kicks him or her around –the ability to cope with the hardship and continue with life becomes an inner superpower.

(Honors Classes only) Source 4: Scientist calculates the ludicrous strength of Marvel villain ThanosBy Ben Guarino, Washington Post

In "Avengers: Infinity War," the latest superhero smash-em-up, Captain America, Iron Man and company face off against villain Thanos. Thanos is the baddest of the bad guys to swagger on-screen in 10 years of Marvel blockbusters. Joe Russo, who co-directed the movie with his brother Anthony, told The Washington Post earlier in May that Thanos is "the Genghis Khan of this universe" with a philosophical bent.

Because superhero blockbusters demand that philosophers must also pulverize, Thanos matches his big brain with bigger purple muscles. He doesn't just look the brutish part. Based on a recent "whimsical by design" analysis, Northeastern University engineering professor Steven Cranford calculated that Thanos is powerful enough to dead lift the RMS Titanic.

To get to that calculation, Cranford made real molecular models of a fictional cube called the Tesseract. The peer-reviewed journal Extreme Mechanics Letters published his models earlier this month.

The Tesseract, as seen in the "Avengers" movie trailer, is a glowing blue box that Thanos crushes to dust. It's an undignified end for an object included in no fewer than nine Marvel films. ("Iron Man's" dad sketched it in his notebook.) For our purposes, picture the Tesseract as a very strong, and four-dimensional, crystalline cube.

Cranford, a Marvel movie buff and a materials scientist, has two reactions to science fiction inventions like the Tesseract. Frequently he rolls his eyes; other times, though, he has a thought, "well, that's interesting."

When Thanos demolished the cube, Cranford had one of those thoughts. In his Boston office, the day after the trailer hit the Internet, Cranford fired up a molecular dynamics program to figure out what a four-dimensional box could look like. If he cracked the cube's geometry, he could calculate its material strength. And if he knew the cube's strength, he could calculate how powerful Thanos needed to be to crush it.

Luckily for Cranford, tesseracts are not just gobbledygook churned out of the Marvel Studios machine. They also exist in the pages of geometry textbooks. "It was probably just called that in the movie because it sounded technical or something," Cranford said. As a square becomes a cube by adding the third dimension, a cube becomes a hypercube — a tesseract — by adding a fourth. Picture a smaller cube suspended perfectly within the center of a larger cube, and you have approximated a tesseract.

Using the modeling software, Cranford began to construct molecular tesseracts, linking carbon atom to carbon atom.

Carbon appeals to theoretical tinkerers like Cranford because the element's atoms bind to each other in multiple ways. With multiple forms come vastly different properties. Consider diamond and graphite. Both substances contain only carbon atoms. Compactly bound atoms lend diamonds their incredible strength. In soft graphite, the carbon atoms are strung looser and farther apart, like sheets of chicken wire.

When a form of carbon gets really weird, materials scientists describe the arrangement of its atoms as an "exotic geometry." One such form, fullerene, is a spherical cage of carbon atoms. Fullerene cages have been synthesized in laboratories and detected in space. Cranford's computer program, a tool used by many materials scientists, is

Page 8: M/J Language Arts 3, Regular and Advanced  · Web view2020-04-21 · In "Avengers: Infinity War," the latest superhero smash-em-up, Captain America, Iron Man and company face off

stocked with similarly exotic geometries. These include graphene, a flat sheet of carbon arranged like a honeycomb's hexagonal chambers, and carbyne, a one-dimensional daisy chain of carbon atoms.

Liberated by science-fiction but constrained within the realistic bounds of the software, Cranford cooked up carbon formations that no laboratory on Earth can synthesize.

Leaning on the program's "reactive force fields" allowed him to create "crazy molecules," said materials scientist Julia Greer, who studies carbon nanostructures at the California Institute of Technology and was not a part of this research. "In these kinds of simulations, you can construct anything you want."

Still, plenty of the would-be tesseracts fell apart. Too-tight angles broke the carbon bonds and, in some cases, the carbon atoms just wouldn't stick, rejected like mismatched puzzle pieces.

But Cranford was successful twice. He designed two new types of stable carbon arrangements, and published their theoretical structures earlier this month. Greer, who applauded Cranford's comic-book inspiration, said his playful approach generated "toy molecules."

One carbon form, connected loops of carbon atoms, Cranford named pentatope. The other form, carbon cubes-within-cubes, he called hypercubyne. This was his carbon tesseract. He tested the strength of his simulated creations, digitally compressing the molecules to see what force buckled their bonds. Ten-billionths of a newton bent the hypercubyne bonds, which, alone, is not very impressive. (By way of comparison, professional boxers punch with forces of up to 5,000 newtons.)

Yet, if hypercubyne molecules were linked together like billions and billions of Lego bricks, its strength rocketed into science fictional digits. A hypercubyne with 6-inch-long edges, resembling the Tesseract in Marvel films, would weigh less than a cube of pencil graphite. But Cranford concluded that squeezing the cube to dust required a force equal to 42,000 tons, or the combined grip strength of 750,000 average U.S. men. (That's about the number of men living in Philadelphia.) Assuming a proportional relationship between grip strength and what the average male American can lift, back-of-the-envelope math suggests Thanos could heft 120 million pounds, 10 million pounds more than the weight of the Titanic.

"Thanos was extremely strong, not just, you know, marginally stronger than a human," he said.

Greer was not enthusiastic about the way Cranford scaled the strength of the 6-inch cube. "The link from the buckling of an individual bond to the strength of the material is a little dubious," Greer said. If you plucked a few molecules from a chimney brick and compressed those, vs. compressing a brick itself, you'd get disproportionate forces, she said. "There's nothing wrong with the toy molecules," she said, but building the cube makes "a gross leap into the material properties."

The study author admitted that assembling individual hypercubyne molecules into a large cube was far-fetched. "To carry the strength from nano to macro you're basically saying you can put these things together in an idealized way. And the technology is not there," Cranford said. But he disagrees that it is theoretically impossible. "You would just have to place billions of atoms in the right spot."

Both Greer and Cranford agreed that science fiction is a useful tool in materials science classrooms. Greer said she could envision using a similar example while teaching her undergraduate students.

Many materials scientists have looked to nature for a creative spark. The sticky pads of gecko feet, after all, inspired the creation of new adhesives. Cranford argues that wall-crawling Spider-Man could be just as inspirational as a lizard. He's eager to poach more ideas from screenwriters and comic book authors, he said. "You don't have to be an engineer to come up with an idea about a material or materials science."

May 11 - 15 Focus: Reading ComprehensionThis week you’ll be reading stories and articles, while answering questions.

Day 6 English Language ArtsWriting & Reading

Today’s Work: 1. Read the excerpt from Atoms for Peace Speech and complete the questions that

follow.

Excerpt from Atoms for Peace SpeechAddress by Mr. Dwight D. Eisenhower, President of the United States of America,

to the 470th Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly

The United States, heeding the suggestion of the General Assembly of the United Nations, is instantly prepared to meet privately with such other countries as may be “principally involved”, to seek “an acceptable solution” to the atomic armaments race which over shadows not only the peace, but the very life, of the world.

We shall carry into these private or diplomatic talks a new conception. The United States would seek more than the mere reduction or elimination of atomic materials for military purposes. It is not enough to take this weapon out of the hands of the soldiers. It must be put into the hands of those who will know how to strip its military casing and adapt it to the arts of peace. The United States knows that if the fearful trend of atomic military build-up can be reversed, this greatest of destructive forces can be developed into a great boon, for the benefit of all mankind.

The United States knows that peaceful power from atomic energy is no dream of the future. The capability, already proved, is here today. Who can doubt that, if the entire body of the world's scientists and engineers had adequate amounts of fissionable material with which to test and develop their ideas, this capability would rapidly be transformed into universal, efficient and economic usage?

To hasten the day when fear of the atom will begin to disappear from the minds the people and the governments of the East and West, there are certain steps that can be taken now.

I therefore make the following proposal.

The governments principally involved, to the extent permitted by elementary prudence, should begin now and continue to make joint contributions from their stockpiles of normal uranium and fissionable materials to an international atomic energy agency. We would expect that such an agency would be set up under the aegis of the United Nations. The ratios of contributions, the procedures and other details would properly be within the scope of the “private conversations” I referred to earlier.

The United States is prepared to undertake these explorations in good faith. Any partner of the United States acting in the same good faith will find the United States a not unreasonable or ungenerous associate.

Page 15: M/J Language Arts 3, Regular and Advanced  · Web view2020-04-21 · In "Avengers: Infinity War," the latest superhero smash-em-up, Captain America, Iron Man and company face off

Undoubtedly, initial and early contributions to this plan would be small in quantity. However, the proposal has the great virtue that it can be undertaken without the irritations and mutual suspicions incident to any attempt to set up a completely acceptable system of world-wide inspection and control.

The atomic energy agency could be made responsible for the impounding, storage and protection of the contributed fissionable and other materials. The ingenuity of our scientists will provide special safe conditions under which such a bank of fissionable material can be made essentially immune to surprise seizure.

The more important responsibility of this atomic energy agency would be to devise methods whereby this fissionable material would be allocated to serve the peaceful pursuits of mankind. Experts would be mobilized to apply atomic energy to the needs of agriculture, medicine and other peaceful activities. A special purpose would be to provide abundant electrical energy in the power-starved areas of the world.

1. Select TWO details from the passage that BEST support the idea that an international atomic energy agency is a safe and mutually beneficial way for countries to adapt atomic energy for peaceful activities.

a. It would be developed through private conversations among countries seeking a solution to atomic armament.

Day 8 English Language ArtsWriting & Reading

Today’s Work: 1. Review the speech from Eisenhower.2. Read the speech from Truman and answer the questions that follow.

Excerpt from Harry S. Truman’s White House Press Release Announcing the Bombing of Hiroshima, August 6, 1945We are now prepared to obliterate more rapidly and completely every productive enterprise the Japanese have above ground in any city. We shall destroy their docks, their factories, and their communications. Let there be no mistake; we shall completely destroy Japan's power to make war.

It was to spare the Japanese people from utter destruction that the ultimatum of July 26 was issued at Potsdam. Their leaders promptly rejected that ultimatum. If they do not now accept our terms they may expect a rain of ruin from the air, the like of which has never been seen on this earth. Behind this air attack will follow sea and land forces in such number that and power as they have not yet seen and with the fighting skill of which they are already well aware.

The Secretary of War, who has kept in personal touch with all phases of the project, will immediately make public a statement giving further details.

His statement will give facts concerning the sites at Oak Ridge near Knoxville, Tennessee, and at Richland, near Pasco, Washington, and an installation near Santa Fe, New Mexico. Although the workers at the sites have been making materials to be used producing the greatest destructive force in history they have not themselves been in danger beyond that of many other occupations, for the utmost care has been taken of their safety.

The fact that we can release atomic energy ushers in a new era in man's understanding of nature's forces. Atomic energy may in the future supplement the power that now comes from coal, oil, and falling water, but at present it cannot be produced on a bases to compete with them commercially. Before that comes there must be a long period of intensive research. It has never been the habit of the scientists of this country or the policy of this government to withhold from the world scientific knowledge. Normally, therefore, everything about the work with atomic energy would be made public.

But under the present circumstances it is not intended to divulge the technical processes of production or all the military applications. Pending further examination of possible methods of protecting us and the rest of the world from the danger of sudden destruction.

I shall recommend that the Congress of the United States consider promptly the establishment of an appropriate commission to control the production and use of atomic power within the United States. I shall give further consideration and make further recommendations to the Congress as to how atomic power can become a powerful and forceful influence towards the maintenance of world peace.

Day 9 English Language ArtsWriting & Reading

Today’s Work: 1. Read the excerpt from Hamlet and answer the questions that follow.

Excerpt from Hamlet—Act IV, Scene VBy William Shakespeare

Context of excerpt:

Hamlet is appalled by his (newly-widowed) mother’s marriage to his uncle, Claudius, and vows revenge for his father’s death. During an argument with his mother, Queen Gertrude, Hamlet inadvertently murders Polonius, who was hidden behind a tapestry—mistaken for King Claudius. As a result, Ophelia—Polonius’ daughter—is driven mad by grief from her father’s sudden death. The following scene takes place in the castle; Horatio and Queen Gertrude are discussing Ophelia because Queen Gertrude doesn’t wish to see her. Horatio and a Gentleman convince Gertrude to see the grieving girl—explaining her mental instability and warning that people may be influenced by her crazy rants. Ophelia then appears before Gertrude incoherently, singing a strange song to Queen Gertrude and King Claudius. Claudius attributes Ophelia’s grief to her father’s death and points out that she is not alone in feeling disturbed by Polonius’ death and speedy burial. The excerpt ends with Claudius ordering that Ophelia is followed and watched after she exits.

Relevant Characters from excerpt: Hamlet: Prince of Denmark, in love with Ophelia, seeks revenge on ClaudiusHoratio: Hamlet’s close friendGertrude: Queen of Denmark, Hamlet’s motherClaudius: King of Denmark, Hamlet’s uncle; married Gertrude shortly after Hamlet’s father’s death Ophelia: Polonius’ daughter with whom Hamlet is in love

Day 10 English Language ArtsWriting & Reading

Today’s Work: 1. Read the excerpt from The Lonely Rider and answer the questions that follow.

The Lonely RiderBy Frankie Smith

The bustling metropolis of Brussels combines an interesting mix of an ever-changing population with stable consistency. Home to the European Union, it eagerly welcomes immigrants seeking refuge from many distant lands, yet throughout the Belgian city, the medieval architecture speaks loudly to its residents reminding them of one constant—rulers and regimes rise and fall, but this

Page 26: M/J Language Arts 3, Regular and Advanced  · Web view2020-04-21 · In "Avengers: Infinity War," the latest superhero smash-em-up, Captain America, Iron Man and company face off

city has outlived them all. The commuter train buzzes in and out and around the ancient relicts carrying diverse citizens through the historic city.

One particular train that travels from La Grande Place towards the medieval town of Bruges, journeys with an insignificant, but memorable, woman each day. Balancing on the arm of a seat, she carefully monitors her son in the back-corner seat. Her head wrap serves as an indicator to others that she perhaps came from another ancient city, yet her modern, attire, speaks to other Syrians of her educated, upper class status. Despite her social class, her greatest pride, her role as mother prompts her tossing a lullaby in her native Arabic to the little boy on their way to the park. She smiles, and she leans in laughing and caressing his dark, curly hair.

There is only one problem. No child sits in the seat. Itis empty.

Inevitably, this makes all on the train uncomfortable and they try to avoid her gaze. No one takes the seat near her and instead fellow travelers gravitate as far forward on the train as possible. As the train moves from stop to stop, her forced audience begins to realize by her gentle song and smile that there indeed must be a tragic story and their discomfort evolves to include a sympathy that most other lunatics don’t provoke.

Indeed, she does have a story and she holds a token of it, a small remembrance and also a clue to her tragic tale, in her hand. Apiece of a fishing net that she grips tightly holds the key to her heartbreak and mental break. Last summer, she fled the violence of Aleppo with her young son in hopes of establishing a peaceful life. The fishing boat they boarded would cross the Mediterranean and take them to asylum. Unfortunately, the overcrowding on the boat caused the boat to capsize, the rough waters to snatch her son, and her to exchange embracing her precious baby boy for the last thing he held, a corner of a frayed fishing net.

So, now each day she peacefully and joyfully rides the metro with her son, even if it is only in her mind, just as she had always hoped. While it is craziness to those who observe and do not participate in her fantasy, they somehow feel compassion despite their discomfort, knowing that had they been born on different soil, this insanity might be their own.

May 18 - 22 Focus: Writing an Argument Essay This week focuses on writing an essay on the following prompt: Write to argue whether owning a business or owning a sports team would bring greater overall job satisfaction.

Day 11 English Language ArtsWriting & Reading

You’ll be writing an argument essay on this topic: Write to argue whether owning a business or owning a sports team would bring greater overall job satisfaction.

Today’s Work: 1. Read the Business or Sports Team? articles and underline or highlight evidence that

could be used in your essay about whether owning a business or owning a sports team would bring greater overall job satisfaction.

Business or Sports Team? ArticlesSource 1: Busy Business

In 2011, Elizabeth Merrill shadowed Robert McNair, billionaire owner of the Houston Texans football team on a game day. In her article for ESPN magazine, Merrill chronicles McNair’s Sunday game-day happenings, beginning with his morning routine that isn’t unlike most business owners. He ushers in the new day with coffee and walking his cocker spaniel. He heads to the stadium, and as his bodyguard approaches, it becomes obvious that he’s not your average business owner. Nevertheless, he stops to greet several fans on his way up to his owner’s suite where celebrities and

presidents often join him. The game begins, and the friendly greetings turn to laser focus as he begins discussing statistics and strategies with his general manager. With five minutes left in the game, he goes to the field to witness the win. After the game, he heads to the locker room to congratulate each player and coach personally. Involved in the negotiations that brought of them to Houston, he’s hoping his careful attention to staff and positive team culture will lead their team to the playoffs. He leaves the stadium at 5pm. Exhausted, the 72-year-old decides to head home and call it a day.

Recently, I travelled to Wyoming to experience a luxurious weekend at a friend’s ranch where I, too, peeked into the life of a successful business owner. Mr. Johnston, like Robert McNair, is a billionaire. This ranch is one of his three residences; another property is in Hawaii, and a third, near his detergent manufacturing company, is in Denver, Colorado. Friday morning, we woke early and had a quick coffee and toast because we were to meet the ranch hand to ride horses in their arena. Mr. Johnston determined that he would stay back to make calls and connect with his senior management team to discuss their acquisition of a company. Returning to the house for lunch, we heard him now on the phone discussing some mechanical issues they were having with a new production plant they had purchased in Kentucky. He smiled as he greeted us while explaining to the plant manager that his lunch dates had arrived. That afternoon, while joining us for a trail ride, he explained that he would be flying on his jet back to Denver that evening because he had some urgent issues that needed attention, but he assured us the ranch hand, Willie, would take phenomenal care of us. The next day, as I chatted with Willie and he shared that Mr. Johnston often scooted to meetings, leaving early, I realized that these two lives possess a common theme—work permeates their world. Whether a Sunday game day or a late-evening flight, their business takes priority.

Source 2: It Takes Hard Work

Aspiring entrepreneurs and investors often wonder what it would be like to manage and own a successful business and to see the ultimate expression of success as owning a professional athletic team, but what is it really like? A successful coffee shop owner in St. Pete Beach, Florida, addresses the realities of ownership stating, “Running a business is like having a baby. It takes all your attention at first and over time things settle down.”

Often, though, research shows things don’t settle down, rather they close down. Few new businesses survive longer than eighteen months. Why is the success rate so low? The answer is relatively simple—owning a business is hard, tedious, tiresome, and stressful work! Typically, the bigger the business, the bigger the problems and the bigger the responsibility for the owner.

The most prosperous business owners not only have a quality product, but also spend a significant amount of time building quality relationships. Establishing positive rapport with staff, customers, and suppliers is crucial to long-term success. Therefore, being a successful business owner means not only putting in time and energy, but also putting heart into the business.

Another key aspect of being a successful business owner is being the one in charge. At first glance, that sounds glamorous, but in reality, that means being responsible for the most difficult problems the company faces. This often means long hours, stress, and unforeseen expenses. An owner of twelve donut franchises explained this best when he described having to get up at 3 a.m. for a week straight to cover the morning shift at one of his shops because a nasty flu struck an entire morning staff. He had to do this in addition to his normal management duties as owner of eleven other stores.

So then, how is owning a professional sports team any different than owning any other business? The differences are significant and complex. Crucial to understanding what it is like to own a team is recognizing that an owner owns more than just the team name and employs much more than the athletes.

The owner typically has to invest in the league franchise which means that he or she owns a portion of the league. To own a soccer team in the United States costs an owner nearly 150 million dollars, and in the NFL, a football franchise is approximately 1.4 billion dollars. Furthermore, they own non-team assets, such as stadiums. All this makes taxes and accounting more complicated than other enterprises. Owners also have sponsors, coaches, contracted players, and fans to keep happy, all with varying interests. The life of a team owner demands immense management skills, but a little luck with winning never hurts either.

Source 3: Ownership Benefits

Owning a business has its perks, but owning a professional sports team has massive benefits. Several notable business owners have invested in sports teams because of the many advantages in ownership and the simple pleasure they find in being their team’s biggest fan.

Perhaps the most obvious benefit to owning any business is that you get to make the rules. As the owner, you get to decide how much you desire to work and even what responsibilities you will take on. Often owners of businesses do little more than provide the finances to start a company and then hire individuals to run it. Another benefit to being the owner is that as an owner, one can work towards creating the work culture that he or she desires. As the key investor,

the owner or co-owners typically have the final say in determining work goals, dress code, work hours, and how many vacation days that employees, including themselves, can take.

In addition, business ownership benefits owners financially in terms of taxes in ways that it does not benefit persons in high management positions. Many

Page 31: M/J Language Arts 3, Regular and Advanced  · Web view2020-04-21 · In "Avengers: Infinity War," the latest superhero smash-em-up, Captain America, Iron Man and company face off

people prefer to work for themselves and own a business in the U.S. due to these tax benefits. Write offs, also known as deductions, help to reduce the amount of taxes an individual pays. Interestingly though, this is often the one downside of owning a sports team. The tax situation with owning a professional sports team is not always advantageous to the owner for incredibly complex reasons.

Nevertheless, owning a sports team has many perks. In addition to the ownership privileges stated above, the owner of a team has access to celebrities and politicians. They receive an immense amount of public notoriety. Generally speaking, sports teams and their owners work closely with business sponsors and important community members to promote their teams. This networking often provides many trade-offs for the owner. By allowing famous and influential fans in the owner’s suite, the owner in turn receives invitations to other important events.

One cannot help but wonder, though, that the most desirable benefits of team ownership are the great seats and access to players. Often times, owners purchase their favorite team, and for a loyal fan, there is no greater joy than conversing with your favorite players. Of course, the biggest incentive has to be that the owner’s suite has restaurant-style service, which means that they never have to miss a play while waiting in line for a hot dog. Now THAT is one priceless perk!

(Honors Classes only) Source 4: Startup aims to fund, shake up youth sportsBy Diane Mastrull, Philadelphia InquirerPHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — Evan Brandoff and Zubin Teherani are living the dream as two single guys in their mid-20s sharing an apartment in the city, free of daunting family responsibilities. In other words, they have no kids.

Yet, they work on behalf of them daily as founders of the startup LeagueSide. Written atop the white board in the conference room of their coworking space is this mission statement: “To make youth sports more accessible.”

Their method is to help money-squeezed sports organizations reach beyond the traditional sources of funds for uniforms, equipment, field rentals and referees — mom-and-pop pizza shops, local hardware stores and, of course, players’ parents — to land sponsorships from regional and national brands.

“We want to give every single child the opportunity in the United States to be able to play organized sports,” said Brandoff, 25, LeagueSide’s chief executive.

Since being launched in 2015, LeagueSide will have helped secure about $2 million in funding for 600 leagues in 16 states by year’s end, Brandoff said. Half of that funding will have been secured just this year, he said. He declined to disclose the company’s take.

While its millennial staff of 12 is expected to expand to 20 by year’s end, it still wouldn’t be big enough for LeagueSide to realize its goal of opening regional offices. So LeagueSide soon plans a Series A fundraising round of $3 million to $5 million. Last year, it raised $750,000 from investors, including Ben Franklin Technology Partners, cigar entrepreneur Marvin Samel and former NFL safety Ronnie Lott.

“What is so exciting as we grow,” said Teherani, 26, LeagueSide’s chief operating officer, “is not only is this a scalable company that is worth a lot of money; simultaneously, we’re giving back money to communities.”

The idea came to Brandoff a couple of years ago when he was in Detroit as a Venture for America fellow and running business-to-business sales and advertising for Benzinga.com, a financial-media company.

While volunteering at a basketball tournament, he noticed the rapt attention of parents of the boys and girls on the court — and realized the sales opportunity. He also recognized what companies wanting to reach that audience could do to help defray the cost of playing youth sports for families.

“Effective local marketing plus helping kids play sports equals huge win-win,” said Brandoff, who met Teherani at Venture for America training.

Fragmentation makes reaching youth sports audiences a monumental effort, even for large companies with big marketing budgets. LeagueSide estimates that there are 38 million kids playing youth sports in the United States. Many towns have multiple sports leagues, almost all run by volunteers.

With its hyperlocal sponsorships, LeagueSide can “cut through the noise and reach families in an engaged setting” with customized campaigns, including backstop banners, redeemable coupons, coach-of-the-year contests, email blasts and social-media posts, Brandoff said.

“Through LeagueSide,” he said, “brands can reach families in their most engaged and happy setting — when their kids are creating memories, playing sports.”

The sponsorships, at least in theory, can enable leagues to lower enrollment costs for families and cover the expenses for kids whose parents can’t afford to pay anything. Brandoff said LeagueSide’s work has “impacted” well over 500,000 families, either in lower registration fees or with discounted prices through coupons and gift cards to sponsoring businesses. Brandoff said “thousands of kids” who could not afford to join a youth league have gotten the opportunity because of LeagueSide-arranged sponsors.

Working in some of Philadelphia’s neediest neighborhoods, Felix Agosto, chief executive of MVP360 Community Programs, said he has kept registration costs at around $40 a sport despite continuing participation growth since he founded the youth sports nonprofit in 2012.

“The more kids we have, the more costs,” said Agosto, a father of two (with a third on the way) who doesn’t like to ask parents to do fundraisers because “they’re already contributing a registration fee.” So, when he heard of LeagueSide, Agosto figured there was no harm in trying it, especially when he found out that, unlike other sponsorship programs, it did not require him to sell anything.

The only ask, Agosto said, is that MVP360 make two social-media posts, send out two emails to parents, and hang a banner at sporting events — all referencing LeagueSide-affiliated sponsors. For MVP360, those have been a health care network, law firm and concussion center. Their contributions have ranged from $1,500 to $2,500 per sports program, Agosto said.

The emails he sends parents usually contain something educationally relevant from the sponsors, such as tips on avoiding or treating injuries. LeagueSide is responsible for creating the content, which Agosto said organizations such as his welcome, given limited resources.

“This is actually cost-effective for us, for the parents, and for the companies,” he said, noting that the sponsors are “reaching an audience they might not necessarily reach with a TV ad or a newspaper ad.”

That view is shared by Jamison Young, a field marketing manager for Smoothie King, a New Orleans-area-based franchise specializing in blended drinks and healthy snacks.

While radio has a broad reach, its audience often is “hearing a message and forgetting about it,” said Young, who majored in advertising and marketing at Villanova University. His Smoothie King territory is the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

LeagueSide “allows us to make this small universe of moms, dads, coaches and athletes,” Young said.

“They see a banner at the field every Saturday and then, at home, they will get an email from the league containing a Smoothie King coupon, and on another Saturday, on the field, our store owners will be there sampling.”

So far, Smoothie King is happy, Young said. He cited a post-campaign survey last year in Washington showing that 41 percent of people who had never heard of or visited a Smoothie King before the season had become customers.

As business grows, LeagueSide’s labor-intensive work gets harder. For instance, Emily Haas, senior campaign executive, said she scours maps to find promising regions for a particular sponsor, then researches the sports leagues there in search of the demographics best matching the kind of consumers the business wants to reach.

Part of the new investments LeagueSide hopes to attract will be spent on building out a tech platform to help automate that process, Teherani said.
