CHAPTER 1HOW TO USE THIS IPB WITH NOMENCLATURE

Section I. GENERAL

The following instruction explains the use of the Illustrated Parts Breakdown (IPB). An IPB defines, by color coding, which parts are authorized for repair and replacement and who is authorized to conduct repair and replacement. It is imperative that this direction be followed as outlined; failure to comply with this instruction can result in catastrophic weapons failure which in turn could result in injury or loss of life.

Section II. IPB COMPONENTS

IPB consists of the following:

(1) Color-coded line drawings.(2) Drawing table.

Table 1-1. Example of Drawing Table.

The drawing table consists of four columns. Each column provides information on parts identified by color-coded line drawing.

(1) ITEM NO. This indicates number used to identify items called out in illustration. (a) If Item Number is followed by an “L”, this indicates that part is specific to MK 16 MOD 0

(SCAR-L).(b) If Item Number is followed by an “H”, this indicates that part is specific to MK 17 MOD 0

(SCAR-H).(c) If Item Number is not followed by an “L” or an “H”, this indicates that part is common to both

MK 16 MOD 0 (SCAR-L) and MK 17 MOD 0 (SCAR-H).(2) PART NUMBER. This is the manufacturer’s part number for item identified in drawing.(3) NSN. This is the NATO Stock Number assigned by NATO Codification System to catalog item. If a

NSN is assigned, this part can be ordered through the standard supply system. If only a part number is identified, the part can be ordered through the supply system if it has been cataloged. If it is not identifiable by using the supply system, it must be ordered through open purchase from weapon’s manufacturer.

(4) NOMENCLATURE. This is the standard terminology assigned to a part.

(1) Red – Components and accessories defined by color RED are to be repaired or replaced at Depot Level Maintenance only. Organizational Level (O-Level) maintenance personnel are not authorized to repair, replace, alter, or modify parts, assemblies, subassemblies, or components defined by RED. This does not prohibit inspection of RED parts by O-Level maintenance personnel.

(2) Yellow – Components and accessories defined by color YELLOW can be repaired or replaced at O-Level maintenance. However, these parts or accessories are not supported by NSWC Crane and must be procured through authorized commercial sources or internal supply system.

(3) Green – Components and accessories defined by color GREEN can be repaired or replaced at O-Level or Depot Level maintenance and are supported by use of three different systems.

Support Defined:

(1) SCAR – Items are supported by Program Manager at NSWC Crane. For support issues email [email protected].

Section III. INTERPRETATION

(1) All assemblies, subassemblies, components, and parts are to be inspected and maintained in accordance with (IAW) Operator’s Manuals and Technical Repair Standard Manuals. IPB Color Coding simply defines who is authorized to repair or replace particular components of weapon. Manuals containing color drawings of components reinforce IPB instructions for authorized maintenance. DO NOT confuse photographs with drawings. Photographs used in manuals are for illustration only and do not reflect authorized levels of maintenance.

(2) In an instance where a Green Part is interfaced with a Red Part, O-Level maintenance is authorized to replace or repair the Green Part as long as the Red Part is not altered or modified. An example of this is outlined on the next page:

(3) Lower receiver (Red Part) cannot be repaired or replaced by O-Level Maintenance. Takedown pin and pivot pin (Green Parts) can be repaired or replaced by O-Level Maintenance as long as Red Part is not modified or altered (i.e. enlarge hole by filing or tapping) to accommodate Green Part.
