Busses Pass inspectionThe Minerva Local School District’s Transportation Department passed the annual Bus Inspection by the State Highway Patrol with flying colors! Each of our districts 23 buses went through a very thorough inspection by our two bus mechanics, David Henning and Stanley Gassman; two of our bus drivers, Ron Smith and Joe Mardis and the team of one State Trooper and two inspectors.

Our buses travel approximately 265,000 miles per year, covering 81 square miles, and transport a total of 1,500 students. We have two great mechanics who work very hard on our bus fleet to keep them in excellent condition so they are safe for our students.

Fall SportsThe fall sports season started off strong as we had two teams win their first-ever NBC Title! They were also our first school titles in two years. The Boys Soccer Team, coached by Dave Gotschall, finished their season 14-3-1 overall (Best in school history), and 6-1 NBC (Champions). Tyler Stewart was NBC Player of the Year, East District Player of the Year, and 1st Team All-Ohio. His 134 career goals place him 9th all-time in Ohio. Coach Gotschall was also named NBC and Eastern District Coach of the Year.

The Girls Golf Team, coached by Jeanette Leyda, finished the season 12-3 overall and 9-1 in the NBC. They also won the very first NBC Championship in school history. They finished 4th in Sectionals and 3rd at Districts, which qualified them to go to the State Golf Championship in Columbus. This was only the 2nd time in school history; the first time was in 2009. The golfers were led by Ellie Chaddock and Logan Pottorf. Both girls were named to 1st Team NBC and All Stark County Team. Coach Leyda was also named NBC Coach of the Year.

The Girls Soccer Team finished their season 12-7-1 overall and 4-3 in NBC. Coach Nicole Chaddock’s squad made it to the District Finals once again, but they unfortunately lost to John Glenn. Josie Chaddock had a huge year as she was named 1st team NBC, Stark County Player of the Year, and 2nd Team All-Ohio.

The Volleyball Team, under the direction of Tiffany Oaks, lost a few key players from the previous year. However, under the leadership of senior Jordan Diels, they were 9-16 overall and 3-11 NBC. Jordan was named 1st Team NBC and 1st Team Distrcit IV.

The Boys Golf Team, coached by The Dean of NBC Golf, Bruce Wright, finished 7-9 overall and 7-7 in NBC. That record was good enough to earn them a 4th place finish. The team only had two seniors, so the future looks bright for the Boys Golf Team.

The Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams had many new faces that made an impact on the teams. Freshman Mackenzie Scott earned 1st Team NBC and All Stark County. Mack also qualified for the State Championship at National Trail Raceway. The boys team was led by Duncan Freeland, who was named 1st Team All Stark County and 2nd Team NBC.

The Varsity Football Team finished 4-6 on the season. Three of those losses came by a touchdown or less. Mike Hall completed his 2nd season as the Head Coach, just missing the 8th and final playoff spot by one win. The team was led by the 4-year letter winner, Dalton Hartshorn. He was named 1st team All Ohio, 1st team Eastern District, All Stark County, and Player of the Year in NBC. His career rushing yards of 3,622 was 2nd only to Leon Powell. His 49-career touchdown and single game rushing of 337 yards became best in school history. Wylie Brown was named 1st team NBC, Eastern District, and All Stark County. Billy Eyer was 1st team NBC and Stark County, while Lucas Van Meter was named 1st team Eastern District.

Winter SportsThe winter sports season started which seemed like the day after fall sports were completed. The Bowling Teams once again were very strong. The girls team, under the direction of Dana Keister, won their 13th consecutive Stark County America Division League title. They were also Sectional Champions, District Runners Up, and qualified for the State Championships in Columbus. This year’s team finished in 10th place, and was led by some outstanding senior bowlers, who lettered all four years. Seniors Cierra Campbell, Haley Embrogno and Marisa Miller, along with sophomore Sydni Hertel were named 1st Team All League. Haley was named Player of the Year for the 2nd consecutive season. She was also a 4-time 1st Team member.

The Boys Bowlers, led by coach Bill Richeson, finished 8-2 in the league, which was good enough for 2nd place. They also finished Sectional Runner Up, but more impressive, was they won their 1st ever District Championship. That victory also qualified them for the State Bowling Championship in Columbus, which they finished in 10th place. Ryan Bowman and Lane Elton were both named 1st team All League. Lane had an outstanding state tournament showing, where he finished 3rd team individually, which was just two pins shy of the eventual champion. Lane was named 1st team All-Ohio.

The Cheerleaders continued their dominance of the NBC this season. The Competition Squad, coached by Ashley Lutz, won their 16th League title over the 18 years of NBC competitions. They continued to win numerous competitions throughout the year. This past season, the school hosted the OHSAA Regionals, where over 30 schools competed. Their quest for a 7th straight State title fell a little short. At the OHSAA Division II State Championship, the girls lost by just two points. However, State Runner Up is very impressive.

The Wrestling Team, coached by Chad Hilliard, finished 3-4 in the NBC. Luke Walter and

Dalton Hartshorn were named 1st team NBC. Dalton was also named 1st team All Stark County. Two wrestlers, Ben Zabasnick and Dalton Hartshorn, made it to the State Championship in Columbus. Dalton finished 4th place for the 1601b class at State. He also finished his career 156-34 and scored 823 points, which is the most for both in school history. He was a 4-time All Stark County, 3-time All NBC and 3-time State Qualifier.

The Girls Basketball Team finished 12-12 overall and 7-7 in the NBC, which was good enough for 4th place. Coach Heather Frigyes has a good nucleus coming back, as this year’s squad was led by junior Josie Chaddock. Josie was named 1st Team NBC, District 5, and All Stark County. She also received 2nd Team East District and Honorable Mention All-Ohio. The team will have all five of its starters returning next season, so next year should be a very competitive year for the Lady Lions.

The Boys Basketball Team welcomed a brand new head coach in Shawn Green. Coach Green inherited four returning letterman. However, he also lost 1 ,000-point scorer Jantsen Locke from the year before. The season had many ups and downs, but the team finished 5-18 overall, 2-12 in the NBC. The highlight of the year, though, was when the team upset Marlington at home on January 30th. Marlington had defeated us 83-49 earlier in the season, but that night everything went our way as the boys beat the Dukes 81-64. Senior Kristian Knight was named 2nd team All NBC.

Spring SportsSpring Sports welcomed three new head coaches this year. Rocky Bourquin became the new Head Baseball Coach, replacing long-time head coach, Carl Michael. Meghan (Simons) Kishman took over the softball program, replacing Katie Hannen. Olivia Scott became the Co-Head Coach, joining coach John Williams, and replacing Alex Albert.

The Boys Track Team had a rough year in duels, finishing 0-7. There were, however, many bright spots as several young athletes set personal records throughout the year. The 4x800 Relay Team consisting of Duncan Freeland, Shem Haas, CJ Lee, and Alec Mueller broke a 27-year old school record. They finished second at the regional meet, by running a 8:07.70, which broke the previous record of 8:15.0 set in 1987. Shem Haas also tied a school record in the 1600 meter run at 4:31.18.

The Girls Track Team had a fantastic year. They finished their duels 6-1, which was good enough for 2nd place. The duel record is huge compared to the previous year’s season, in which they finished 0-7. For that improvement, the Co-Head Coaches, John Williams and Olivia Scott, were named NBC Coaches of the Year. Katelynn Christiansen and Emmalee Markins both earned 1st team NBC. Both of them also set new school records in the hurdles and 200-meter dash respectively.

The Baseball Team had a very competitive season as they finished 13-14 overall and 7-7 in the NBC. The season brought many exciting wins during the year, as the boys knocked off Louisville for the first time in sevem years. The other memorable win was the victory over Marlington on Senior Day. Senior Mitch Croston was named 1st team NBC and 1st Team Eastern District, along with freshman Connor Wright. Mitch was also selected to play in the East District Baseball All-Star Game, held at Carl Michael Field.

The Softball Team finished the season 13-8 overall and 9-5 in the NBC. Our league record was good enough for third place. Senior Rachel Eberling ended a great career as the former NBC Player of the Year was named 1st team NBC and East District. Senior Emily Hume was named 2nd team NBC and 1st team Eastern District.

The 2014-2015 Athletic Season brought more upgrades to the sports facilities due to the generosity of our community members and local companies. New scoreboards were placed in the main gymnasium at the high school. They replaced scoreboards that were nearly 25 years old. The baseball and softball fields both had new scoreboards put in place for their seasons. They are 8 feet high and 20 feet long, which replaced our 15-year-old 4x4 foot boards. These new boards made a big difference in our facilities, but the major upgrade was the installation of a turf surface to the baseball infield. Minerva is very lucky to have a dedicated high school baseball field that has turf on the infield. That is something that is very rare, and people are starting to take notice of the new and improved facilities. This past year we hosted another OHSAA football playoff game. We became the OHSAA Sectional Softball host this spring, and the Eastern District Baseball Coaches selected Minerva to be the host for their Senior All-Star Game.

The Minerva Local School District is truly blessed to have such a supportive community, which has allowed our kids to participate on some of the finest facilities in Ohio. We look forward to making our community proud during the 2015-16 school year.

Minerva Middle and High School students and Science department lead-teacher, Stacey Peters attended the “Tech Savvy Girls” workshop on Sat. April 25th at Stark State College. Tech Savvy prepares girls to be a scientist, engineer or technology expert. A special session for parents and families demonstrated how to encourage them on their path to college and a career.

This experience enriched the middle and high school curriculums in the area of STEM and strategies in problem-based and work-based learning.

The event was funded by the Aluminum Company of America Foundation and presented by American Association for University Women (AAUW). Stark State College, a partner with both schools through the Young Entrepreneur’s Consortium sponsored the event.

“We are grateful to all three organizations for making this possible for the girls, as this (grades six through nine) is an impressionable age” stated Becky Miller.

Buddy Benches are CoolMinerva Elementary students dedicated playground benches painted by the school student council “Cub Club.” The benches were built to support the anti-bullying program at the school. Called “buddy benches,” children who may be feeling lonely or sad can invite a friend to join them. “The idea behind the benches is that when a child believes he or she does not have a friend to play with students can go sit on one of those benches and other students know that person needs a friend that day,” said guidance counselor Dianne Ferrell. All school year the staff, students and administration have worn the color orange or T-shirts with the slogan “Bully-free starts with me” the first Friday of the each month, which promoted our year-long initiative against bullying.

Technology-Based ResearchFifth grade students in Mrs. Bartley’s language arts and Mrs. Ruesser’s math classes teamed up this year for an exciting technology-based research project. Each year the fifth

graders take a field trip to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, and prior to going they research some of the animals they may find there. This year the students used the Chromebooks to research and create a presentation that they later shared with students from both first and second grade. The fifth graders made their presentations utilizing the Google Docs version of Microsoft PowerPoint which Google has branded “Slides”. With this experience the students used their own background knowledge and exploration to learn the program and to be creative within the project. Included in their presentations were not only factual information, but pictures and videos as well. The students also created a scale version of their animal based on the information they found while researching, which was displayed in the hallway. Due to the project’s success, and the students’ interest, Mrs. Bartley and Mrs. Reusser look forward to leading this project again next spring.
