Economy and safeguards for the future are two of the most important guarantees for the success of modern electrification systems. Knowledge is our capital The comprehensive knowledge of our en-gineers provides the basis for all practical innovations, irrespective of whether the task calls for high-performance contact line components or low-wear systems, digital protective units and controllers, or no-break and energy-efficient traction power supply systems. The intensive research cooperation within Siemens and with universities and independent institutes keeps our level of knowledge up-to-date.

Innovative: Siprotec 7ST6 line protection relay Successful innovations are usually the result of the symbiosis of our own ideas and market requirements. This is exactly how Siprotec® 7ST6 line protection relay came into being. The new integrated con-trol unit replaces the more complicated concept using two devices functioning separately. Only by cooperating directly with our customers was it possible to shape this innovation so purposefully and create a safe and reliable solution for a clearly defined task. The development process was also accelerated by basing that solution on a successful and proven Siemens product family.

Designing efficient suppliesSafe traction power supplies

Traction power supply systems provide energy for main-line and mass transit operations, for trams and light rail vehicles as well as for long-distance trains. Siemens offers individual solutions for all market demands, no matter whether they are for high or medium-voltage systems, transformers, rectifiers, substation controllers or SCADA.

Tested components you can rely on Absolute safety for people and equipment as well as safeguarding of the customer‘s investment are the top priorities when designing our traction power systems. We test our components under real operating conditions before they are used. This is the only way to create quality products on which the rail operator can always rely.

Optimization by simulationThe expected energy requirement is deter-mined precisely in the preliminary planning stage. We use innovative simulation and optimization programs to design every system cost-effectively and to customer requirements and to build in reserve capaci-ty for the future. The smart combination of electrical and mechanical engineering and electronics gives us the means to creating highly reliable systems that reduce energy consumption.

Economical and environmentally compatibleEnergy management components from our Sitras® range offer numerous benefits that make the operation of your systems more economical, reliable and environ-mentally compatible. The Sitras SES energy storage system stores the braking energy generated by modern mass transit systems to supply it to other vehicles at a later time or uses it to improve the quality of the system voltage. The decisive innovative feature of Sitras SES is that it combines service-proven railway technology with innovative double-layer capacitors and thus opens up completely new technical and economic possibilities. The energy storage system operates in parallel to the existing traction power supply system.

Economy through flexibilityContact line equipment constitutes a major investment. We consider the specific re-quirements at every project phase to increase the service life of our systems. Selection of exactly the right materials is as equally important as system adaptation to the differing climates and topologies.

Know-how and ability – an unbeatable pairThe desired results are achieved only when theory and practice work hand-in-hand. Contact lines not only have to be planned and professionally designed to fulfill re-quirements, they must also be installed quickly and reliably. Our specialists know their trade and fulfill contracts skillfully, reliably and punctually, even under un-favorable conditions.

Throwing the switch for success with professional IT toolsWhen the job deals with train dynamics optimization, integration of contact lines in tunnels and on bridges or safe structural engineering, we employ excellent IT tools for planning and project engineering that our own specialists develop after many years of project experience. An example of this is the configuring tool Sicat Master that supports both loading analyses and preparation of layouts and profiles, and also the registration of track data and optimization of constant-tension section lengths. The Sicat Dynamic simulation tool is employed, for example, for the calculation of the interaction between the contact line and pantograph. All of our IT tools are, of course, matched to each other – in favor of uniform data pro-cessing and consistency of the results.
