Finished in GWR lined green with“Great Western” to tender sides. There is noboiler certificate. The lot also includes a 4 leghard wooden display stand measuring 70 x 12inches (177cm x 31cm) with display track (pleasenote 2 trestles are shown in the picture but thereis only one in the lot). Also included are 10 x King5” Gauge copy drawings of various parts byKennion Bros (Hertford) dated 1957/61.

The original locomotive was built in 1927 at SwindonWorks in June 1927 and withdrawn in December 1962.

6212. 2 1/2” Gauge Class 70 electric LocomotiveSouthern green. Superbly constructed as a copyof the 2 produced by the Southern Railways. Co-Co 6-wheel power units with 2 motors per unit.Motors stamped 24dc with other trade stampings,detailed outside electric pick-ups, all sprungdrives with fully operational Leaf springssupported on rubber bushes. Finished in darkgreen and grey with white lining and “Southern”white lettering to loco sides. The cab constructionis sectionalised with parts bolted together as onthe real locomotive. There is no provision for thesingle overhead pantograph as on the reallocomotive and appears that no provision weremade to fit this to the model. The locomotives isbelieved to be a Southern works/Apprentice builtbut to date no evidence has come to light toconfirm this but the quality of manufacturer andfinish of the model would suggest professionalconstruction. An interesting historical model ofthe Class 70 Locomotive produced during andimmediately after World War 2.

Two of these Class 70 Locomotives were built by theSouthern Railway these being a co-operation betweenOliver Bulleid (The Chief Mechanical Engineer) andAlfred Raworth (Chief Electrical Engineer). The firstbeing commission from the Ashford Works in 1941 andthe second in 1945.

The locomotive is superblyconstructed with much detail including BrakeGear, Southend & Barking nameplates, vacuumpipes, handrails and much other detail. Allfinished in a perspex cover with small crack to oneside. The original locomotives were built bySharp, Stewart & Co in 1897 with a further 6 builtby Dubbs & Co the following year. Each loco wasnamed after places in Essex. In 1912 the LT&SCRwas absorbed by the Midland Railway and alllocos were renumbered and names removed.Forest Gate was withdrawn in 1951. Near Mint toMint.

EstimatesBased upon prices recently paid at auction for comparable property, and take into account condition, rarity, quality and provenance. Estimates are subject to revision. Vendors should not rely upon estimates as a representation or prediction of actual selling prices.

ReservesIn normal circumstances, Vectis Auctions do not accept reserves, however if a vendor wishes to place a reserve ona lot and that lot is eventually unsold, Vectis Auctions will charge the vendor a fee of 7.5% of the placed reserve or£10 whichever is greater. The reserve is the confidential minimum price the vendor will accept and must be agreedwith Vectis Auctions beforehand. This value will not exceed the top pre-sale estimate.

Late Withdrawals(a) Lots withdrawn once an item has been catalogued will incur a charge of 15% of the midpoint between top andbottom estimate or the reserve, whichever is greater.
