    Who is a Baby Boomer?

    The Baby boomers

    According to the United States CensusBureau a baby boomer is someone born

    after world war II between 1946 and 1964.

    By 2015 every baby boomer in the US willbe 50 or older and by 2030 they will be65+

    For this course

    older adult is defined as 65+

    Baby boomers are defined as those 50+

    The standard definition of older adultused in developed countries is based onthe chronological age of 65 or older

    In Africa the age of 50 may be moreaccurate to describe the older adult

    Driven by improvement in life

    expectancy:

    The probable number of years a personwill live based on the birth and mortalitystatistics of the population

    Ranges from 49 to 89 years of age

    The population ofthose over the age of65 is growing By 2050 close to one

    in five Americans(19.3%) will be olderthan 64 (Administration on Aging, 2013.)

    As the populationincreases so does theprevalence ofsubstance use (SAMHSA,2011)
