This Unit aims at equipping learners with knowledge and skills on the essential field operations at district, sub-district and community levels in order to

determine total populations in their catchment areas.

Learning objectives

At the end of this unit, learners will be able to • Explain the significance of determining populations

requiring preventive chemotherapy for the five PC-NTDs. • Conduct a census determining populations • Use census data for estimating requirement of PC

medicines and other supplies.

Census Registration

• Census is undertaken to determine community populations when community distributors/ community health volunteers visit all the households in a community in order to count and register the people eligible to receive MDA (or everyone in the household)

• The census data is used to determine number of tablets required for treatment of each disease and estimate drug and other logistic requirement.

Advantages and disadvantages of each Census method

Census type Advantage Disadvantage

Community census data

- More accurate if CDDs are well trained

- Not always updated by CDDs - May lead to under -estimation of

drugs and other Logistics

Census/Medicine distribution form

• Community Register. 2013.xlsx

• Example from Tanzania (Community Distributor’s Version)

Use country specific census /medicine distribution form

Information collected during target population registration

• Name of house hold members, age, gender

• In case school-age children, note whether the child attends school and the name of school

• Use each class attendance register and include those who are absent in the register and estimate

Some Q&A on population census?

Questions Census Why is this operation necessary? • Estimating PC medicines

• Treatment distribution

• Evaluate performance

When should this operation take place • Before MDA starts

Who should lead on this operation • CDD /Community health volunteers or

appropriate personnel

What are the logistics needed • Household & School registers

• Health Facility & District MDA Summary Data forms

What are the issues •Incomplete census leading to

shortage of medicines etc.

Session 5.2: Key messages

• Census is useful to determine people requiring PC medicines for MDA

• Census facilitates more accurate estimation of quantity of PC medicines to procure
