This portion of the training provides information about resources that will help you better understand the content of the standards, CPIs, and the CPI Links. Namely, well be discussing the Content Guide and Five Items Resource documents as well as the NJ Standards Clarification Project. Youll want to become very familiar with these because they provide a lot of valuable information concerning what the standards actually mean, which should in turn provide a clearer understanding of how instructionand ultimately assessmentshould be shaped.1Teacher ResourcesCPI Links DocumentsCPI Links Content Guide and Five Items Resource Documentshttps://nj-servicepoint.questarai.com/NJxx01_Documentation.aspx 22014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module VI

Here is the link to the CPI Links and to the Content Guide and Five Items Resource documents. After you click on the link, scroll about halfway down the page to the section that says Additional Information and Resources. There you will find links to the CPI Links and then to the Content Guide and Five Items Resources.

Remember that hard copies of the CPI Links are found in your 2014-2015 Procedures Manual. The Content Guide and Five Items Resource information is found online only. 2Developing an Entry and APA FormsMost of the blank forms you need for the portfolio process are found in the APA Procedures Manual.Participation Guidelines ChecklistTest Security AgreementEntry Planning ToolEntry Review ChecklistThe Entry Cover Sheet must be created online via the Questar website provided in the APA Procedures Manual.Remember that you do not submit the Entry Planning Tool or Entry Checklist in the binder; they are for your use only.32014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module VI

Be sure to review and print copies of all forms needed when preparing to begin assessment and portfolio development. It would be helpful to review the forms in conjunction with Modules IV and V as well.

The Entry Cover Sheet is an electronic form that you will complete, submit, and then print out and place in your students binders to precede each entry. CPI Links4The CPI Links are skill statements that directly link to the critical essence of the CPIs and are to be used as the basis for an APA entry based on the test specifications.

2014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module VI

As you saw in Modules IV and V, you will need to be familiar with the CPI Links to know what must be assessed for the APA at the specific grade level of a student. Once you have planned instruction based on the grade level CPIs, you can begin to plan for assessment. 4CPI Links Content Guide and Five Items Resource The CPI Links Content Guide and Five Items Resource documents were created to clarify the content and/or semantics of the CPIs and CPI Links provide examples to use as a reference and guide when creating assessment activities for each of your studentsWhile there are various modes of communication and means of accommodation shown throughout the examples, please understand that the examples were not intended to show a variety of supports; they were primarily intended to show what constitutes five items.Again, you can access the Content Guide and Five Items Resource here: https://nj-servicepoint.questarai.com/NJxx01_Documentation2.aspx?DocType=G5CG 52014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module VI

In addition to the CPI Links, there is a Content Guide and Five Items Resource document for each grade and standard. Remember, the Content Guide and Five Items Resource documents are found exclusively online. Like Slide 2, this slide includes the link to the Content Guide and Five Items Resource as presented on Questars NJ APA site. 5Using the Content Guide & Five Items Resource2014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module VI6There is a Content Guide and Five Items Resource for each grade and each standard. Each Content Guide and Five Items Resource begins with an overview of its purpose and usefulnesshas a Glossary that defines the content vocabulary contained in the language of the CPI linkshas Further Clarifications about specific CPIs, CPI Links, and content issues. has a Five Items section that provides examples for CPI Links that have an asterisk at the end of their link statement.

Each Content Guide and Five Items Resource document has three sections for each standard: a Glossary of terms, a Further Clarifications section, and a Five Items Resource.

All of the information contained in the Content Guide and Five Items Resource is important because it will help ensure you are teaching and assessing your students correctly. In particular, much of the Further Clarifications Information was written in light of issues encountered during the Scoring process. So, its very important that you heed the advice and warnings contained therein to help you avoid zero scores. Realize that scoring decisions are largely made based on the information contained in the Content Guide and Five Items Resource.

Furthermore, the Five Items Resource was originally created to help teachers better understand what constitutes five items for links that might be confusing. However, over the years it has been considerably expanded and now serves not only to clarify five items issues but also to give teachers further insight to the content specifics of the links. The examples do not represent the only acceptable way to assess a link, but they will certainly give you insight to the content and specific requirements to consider when working with particular links. Remember that there is a Five Items example for each link that has an asterisk at the end of the link statement.

6Content Guide and Five Items Resource2014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module VI7Introduction

This is a screen shot of the first page of every Content Guide and Five Items Resource. Its an introduction to the purpose and format of the contents, and the information at the bottom outlines how to use the resource. As it points out, you need to review the Steps to Developing an Entry contained in modules IV and V of the fall teacher training. Then, as you read over the CPIs and CPI Links you are considering to assess, you need to look in the Glossary for any/all vocabulary terms contained in the link language to ensure your understanding is consistent with the understanding set forth by NJ DOE for the APA. Next, check out the Further Clarifications to see if there is additional information you need to know. Finally, as mentioned before, if the link youre considering has an asterisk at the end of the link statement, youll find an example of that link in the Five Items section, which you can use as a model and guide as you choose or develop assessment activities for each of your students. 782014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module VIContent Guide and Five Items ResourceTest Specifications

After the introduction, youll find the APA test specifications. This year, for your convenience, the CPI Links are included in the Content Guide and Five Items Resource. You can still find them in your 2014-2015 Procedures Manual as well as on Questars NJ APA site, using the same link shared earlier in this presentation.

Shown here are the Test Specifications for 4th Grade Science Standard 5.5, which would be Entry 1 in a 4th Grade students portfolio. 892014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module VIContent Guide and Five Items Resource

Glossary

After the Test Specifications page, youll find the Glossary. The terms contained in the links are defined alphabetically and often include graphics and clarifying information. The Glossary section is typically multiple pages. Shown here is the first page of the Glossary for 4th Grade 5.5.9102014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module VIContent Guide and Five Items ResourceFurther Clarifications

Next youll find the Further Clarifications page. This information has been reorganized for this year to improve its ease of readability. It starts with bulleted statements regarding specific concepts then lists clarifications for specific CPI Links. Remember that this information was written in light of issues encountered during the Scoring process and will be used to make Scoring decisions. So, if you do not pay attention to this information, your students binders could receive zero scores. Often, some of this information is repeated in the Glossary definitions and/or the Five Items examples in order to increase the likelihood you will see and take note of it. 10112014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module VIContent Guide and Five Items ResourceFive Items Examples

The last section of the Content Guide and Five Items Resource is the Five Items section. Like the Further Clarifications, this section was also reorganized for this year to make the examples easier to view and read. Each example is displayed on its own page with the CPI, Essence, and specific link statement all cited at the top of the page. Then there is also a section that notes important considerations for assessing the link. The example itself explicitly states the directions to the student in an attempt to clarify what the student was asked to do and make it easier to decipher the students responses. As well, there is a box that explains how many items the example constitutes and why. 11Standards Clarification ProjectThe Standards Clarification Project was developed by the Office of Academic Standards with teams of field-based educators. Its purpose is to provide examples and information that help clarify the priorities (Areas of Focus) of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJ CCCS), and to make explicit the content and skills that are the primary focus of teaching, learning, and assessment. This is a very important resource when planning instruction of the standards, strands, and grade-level CPIs. 122014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module VI

Before you can instruct a student concerning a particular standard, its important to understand what the standard means. And certainly before you can assess a student, its important to understand how to instruct the student. Therefore, the Standards Clarification Project is a way to bring those things together. 12Standards Clarification Project132014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module VIHere is a link to the NJ Standards Clarification Project: http://www.nj.gov/education/aps/njscp/

For science, only 4th Grade and 8th Grade are included.

Here is a link to the Standards Clarification Project along with a screen shot of what you should find when you click on the link. Scroll down toward the bottom of the page to find the Science Areas of Focus. Only 4th Grade and 8th Grade are included for science. 13Standards Clarification Project2014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module VI14

The Standards Clarification Project is organized by standard. So, for example, if you click on 4th Grade then scroll down to page 9, youll find clarifying information regarding Standard 5.5, Characteristics of Life. This screen shot shows the top of page 9, which discusses Strand A: Matter, Energy, and Organization in Living Systems. Remember the purpose of this document is to help you better understand the intent of the standard and its corresponding grade level CPIs.

Among the information shown here, youll find that the areas of focus are identified and that enduring understandings, comments, and examples are listed. There are also some ideas for assessment items or activities, but it is important for you to understand that these activities are not APA specific. They are intended to help inform your classroom instruction and formative assessments, but you will need to follow the guidelines set forth in the NJ APA fall training modules and the Content Guide and Five Items Resource when developing assessment activities for your students APA portfolios. 14Additional ResourcesNJDOE Online resources for general education lessons and supports that can be used to planhttp://www.state.nj.us/education/cccs/Educational Links, Information and Resources on Assistive Technology (AT) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) found at http://www.state.nj.us/education/specialed/tech/
