SECONDARY SCHOOL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM 2017 Our School Captains, Tieke Thomas and Brooke Watts represented Molong Central School at the Secondary Schools Leadership Program organised by the Parliamentary Education Office. This program runs seven sessions throughout the year for school captains of NSW Public Schools to be exposed to the parliamentary system, and provide awareness of the potential leadership path through public service. Members of Parliament addressed Tieke and Brooke, with a surprise guest speaker, the NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian. They also spent time with our local State Member Philip Donato who gave them a brief tour of the parliament. Following a light lunch, the students walked down to Government House where they were greeted by Governor of New South Wales, The Honourable David Hurley, for afternoon tea on the picturesque grounds of Government House. Tieke and Brooke had a personal conversation with the Governor and his wife, which was a highlight of the excursion. “This has been a wonderful opportunity to meet other school leaders and develop a better understanding of how our democracy works” said Tieke Thomas.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH EXPEDITION to THE ROYAL NATIONAL PARK.

A group of eager Duke of Ed kiddies joined Mr & Mrs Costa recently for a challenging expedition to the stunning Royal National Park

to the south of Sydney.

Heading off from school after lunch on the Thursday the group headed to Orange to catch the XPT to Sydney. Arriving late into

Sydney Central YHA we all had a quick meal and then headed for a walk around Chinatown and Darling Harbour to see the amazing

lights being set up for the Vivid Festival.

Early the next morning we loaded our packs, headed off from the YHA, boarded a train and made our way to Otford where the big

hike would begin... and it certainly began with a bang, with possibly the steepest climb of the trip to get up the hill from the train

station.

The walk for the first day saw us passing though beautiful coastal forests, along broad wind-swept beaches and over rocky headlands

before arriving shortly before dark at the soggy campground at North Era, where our happy little campers set up tents, cooked their

dinner and told stories before falling asleep.

Awaking very early the next morning we were all packed, fed and ready to start by 7am – ready for the big day, which took us the

length of the park – through incredible scenery and rough terrain. During the day we walked over 23km which, with large packs and

rough walking, is quite an effort. We even had a wonderful surprise when Maddi spotted a whale breaching just off shore as we

walked along the top of one of the huge sea cliff areas.

Settling in for the night at our camp at Bonnievale, the talking didn’t last too long, as our tired little group quickly fell asleep. (Except

for Jacob and Joshua’s ongoing debate about batteries). Mr Costa’s Fitbit suggested that he had walked over 36 000 steps during

the day.

Our final day involved a 6am wake up time and then we were off for the final walk, a couple of kilometres to the jetty where we caught

the Bundeena ferry back across to Cronulla to begin our long journey back home by train, foot, train again and then coach – arriving

back at Orange station just after 5pm.

This was a great trip, which all members of the group got into and gained a wonderful experience. Well done to Jacob, Tristan, Piper,

Maddi, Amber, Leigh, Joshua & Pedro on completing this challenging hike.

NEWS FROM THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT It has been a busy term for English so far. Years 7-10 have all completed their exams while Year 12 Standard English completed their Module B Close Study of Text- Visual Representation. The students produced work which demonstrated their understanding of the text in interesting and varied ways. Year 10 have performed their Shakespeare task. They had to choose a scene, edit it and produce a short performance. The students who had watched the Bell Shakespeare visit found it immensely useful to their work. The photos show some Year 10 boys working on their Shakespeare and the Year 12 girls with their work. Ms Geraldine Brown, English teacher

Careers Corner

Exploring the World of work.

Preparing futures

All Year 9 have been learning about various employment opportunities. Students were given an assignment where they had to choose a job that not only interests them but is also is in the career area that they would like to work in. They had to collect, organise and analyse ideas, concepts and information and then creatively design an informational poster that communicates to people about the job in general, the tasks performed, personal requirements, education and/or training required, employment opportunities and include any other information they deemed relevant and important. The poster and information needed to be presented in a way that would entice people to read about their choice.

Primary Girls Soccer On Tuesday 13th June, the Molong PSSA girls soccer team, Paige Bohringer, Lacey Brown, Kelsey Quinn, Reagan Quinn, Taylah Hobbs, Molli Huggett, Stella Johnson, Sophie Heath, Chloe Brouff, Demelza Lee, Maggie Kirby and Juliette Whyburn, played soccer against Mulyan Public School. In the first half, we had good defence and the score was only 1 Nil. In the second half, the other team got better and we just did not have the energy like the first half. We thought “Uh Oh we are in trouble”. And we were right! In the first 5 minutes, they had scored a goal. In the end, they got 3 more goals. At the end of the game, Kelsey had a goal lined up and was ready to receive and kick a goal but it was finally full time. The whistle blew and we went “oh blast!” The end score was 5 – 0. We lost but we had a go and tried our hardest. By Paige and Lacey

Primary Athletics Last week we received some wonderful news that two of our students did very well at the District Athletics Carnival held recently. Well done Carter and Maggie! I am pleased to announce the following:

Senior Boys Runner Up Age Champion Carter Kirby

Primary Western Cross Country On Wednesday 14th June, 5 students from Primary travelled to Geurie to compete in the Western Primary Cross Country Trials. They were: Taylah Hobbs, Emily Pearson, Ryan Huggett, Rose Kelly and Maggie Kirby. The students certainly saw a difference in the terrain after competing at Cudal for District. Each student really tried hard and all gained excellent places against many competitors across the Western Region. Luckily enough, three students qualified for State that will be held at Eastern Creek next term. Congratulations to Taylah Hobbs, Maggie Kirby and Emily Pearson on their selection to compete at the State Cross Country Trials. Well done and good luck! Taylah Hobbs Maggie Kirby Emily Pearson

Primary School French or Spanish Classes

A number of parents are looking to start a language class for young primary school students, open to MCS students and others. It is universally agreed that when starting a second language the younger a student is, the quicker they pick it up and with less of an accent. We are looking at one after school class per week ongoing. A second language is one of the best gifts you can give your child and one that stays with them forever. If you think your child would be interested in joining the class please contact Billy Mitchell on 0427668181 or

We are still working on our goals. Hopefully some of us can set new ones next term!

In Science this term, we are studying the unit ‘Living Land’. We have now set up 2 experiments with plants and we are monitoring and recording our results. In one experiment, we planted snow peas. We are looking at the life cycle of the plant and the different stages of the plant.

Some of our seeds have just started appearing. In our other experiment, we are looking at the water quality and its effects on the growth rate of plants. For this experiment, we planted

water cress seeds.
