What would your Halloween party be without a ghoulish punch? This one only looks creepy, but tastes refreshing and crisp. For a children’s party,

just omit the vodka.1 6 oz. can frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed1 6 oz. can frozen orange concentrate, thawed

1 6 oz. can frozen pineapple juice concentrate, thawed1 46 oz. can Hawaiian fruit punch, chilled1 28 oz. bottle seltzer, chilled1 (4/5 qt.) bottle vodkaCombine ingredients in a large punch bowl. Stir well.

Cover with creepy ice “hands.” Makes 3 ½ quarts.Frozen Ice HandsTo turn your punch into a ghoulish presentation, float

severed “hands” in the punch bowl. Make them by filling clear plastic kitchen gloves or vinyl gloves (obviously not powdered) with grape juice. A drop of purple food coloring will provide a deeper contrast to the punch. Tie the gloved hand with the kind of knot you would use to tie a balloon and pull it tight against the juice filled gloves. You can also secure tightly with a rubber band. Place on a sheet pan. Freeze hard.To remove hands, cut below the knot and carefully peel

back plastic or vinyl. When you get down to the fingers, be careful not to break them off (although floating fingers work, too). With sharp pointed scissors cut along fingers carefully removing glove. Place in punch just before serving. They will float as they are lighter than the liquid.Cheers to a very scary Halloween!

You had the brilliant idea to take the family for a day of apple picking and eating and now you've come home from the farm with a bushel of apples. What

will you do with them all? Let's face it, baking is not always easy but since it's October and Halloween is around the corner I thought I'd give you a few ideas to help take your fear of baking away! People often want to know which is the best apple for

baking. My answer is always to mix them up. Pick as many types of apples as you can and then mix them up in your baking. Any apple you pick in the Hudson Valley will work in anything you bake. Some apples are tart and some are sweet; some apples are firm and some are soft. Mixing the types of apples in your baking will give your final product a better flavor and texture. Too intimidated to make a full pie? Here are a few easy tips for you to make use of all of those yummy apples. After school snack: Peel, core and slice the apples and

brush them with fresh lemon juice. The lemon juice will keep them from browning so you can have them ready for the kids when they come home from school. Place them on a tray with a few slices of cheese or a small cup of peanut butter, melted chocolate or Nutella for dipping.Apple-Bread Pudding: Re-purpose your stale bread.

Peel, core and chop two apples. Cut the bread into cube sized pieces to equal about three cups of bread and place both the bread and apples in a bowl. In a separate bowl, beat two eggs, 1/4 cup sugar (granulated or brown sugar - you can even use maple syrup or honey), 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 3/4 cup of heavy cream (use half-and-half or milk instead of heavy cream for a version a little less rich but with fewer calories!) Now mix the milk mixture in with the bread and apples and place in an eight inch baking dish. Make sure the mixture is evenly distributed. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight. The next morning, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and bake the bread pudding for 20-25 minutes. Serve warm with a little

powdered sugar or some warm maple syrup. Delish! Roasted Apples: One

of my favorite things to do with apples is to roast them. Take a variety of 10-12 apples, peel, core and cut them up. Mix them with 2 Tablespoons of melted butter, 1/4 cup of brown sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Put the apples in a baking dish and bake for 30 minutes stirring halfway through the baking time. This is a perfect side dish for a pork dinner or as a dessert to go with fresh whipped cream. Use a potato masher to mash the apples and you have homemade applesauce!Stay Sweet!! Susan

Susan O'Keefe has been baking since she was a little girl. With a passion for baking and a background in marketing and sales, she opened Baked by Susan right in the heart of the little river town of Croton-on-Hudson where she lives with her husband and three growing boys.

Autumn! Along with the return of delightfully cooler weather and the appearance of fuzzy sweaters on store shelves, it’s back-to-school season. And even

for those of us who’ve been out of school for more years than we’d care to remember, many people still feel an urge this time of year to start something new. A relic, possibly, of all those years when Fall meant new clothes, new books, new teachers and new friends. So why not take advantage of that natural impulse and put

it to good use by making healthy changes in your life?• Graditude: So many of us find ourselves racing through

each day, barely taking the time to enjoy the life that we’ve created for ourselves. Taking a moment or two to breathe and appreciate what we have can be rejuvenating and enjoyable, then giving you positive energy for the rest of the day.• Embracing the moment: “Being present,” is a notion

getting a lot of buzz these days. We’re constantly pulled in multiple directions by electronic devices, ringing phones and news flashes – our ability to focus is strained and tested throughout the day. Try putting down your device when talking with a loved one – it allows you listen and be attentive to the situation, which in turn leaves your loved one feeling heard and cared for.• New Attention to Nutrition: Heartier vegetables seem

to go hand in hand with cooler weather – pumpkin, apples, squash and Brussels sprouts are a few delicious examples. These can be roasted, baked, sautéed or eaten raw. Not

only do they taste great, they provide vitamins, minerals and great energy. Pick them up at the supermarket or at the farmer’s market. Be sure to include your fall favorites on a daily basis, and reap the benefits!Incorporating these changes can help you develop

significant new habits. Enjoy the new season! Are there habits you’ve adopted over the years that

you’d like to shed? As a Health Coach, I can help you make significant and meaningful change in your life. Take a look at www.HealthElissa.com or www.Facebook.com/HealthElissa. I look forward to talking with you.

Recently many studies have emerged citing that Americans are drinking more than ever. Beer, wine, and spirits are becoming part of everyday

home-life and not just for restaurants, weekends, or parties. Many people still maintain the image of an alcoholic as someone unable to function at work, or passed out on the couch, or in the street. Although those images are not wrong, they do not portray the most common alcoholic; men and women with hidden alcoholisim, who hold jobs and raise families under the radar of their families, friends, and colleagues. Many couples have made alcohol a significant part of their relationship. Cocktails after work, wine with dinner, beer at social and sporting events. And although for most medically healthy people, alcohol in moderation should not be an issue, over time quantity and frequency can increase, and mood and behavior are often affected.Currently, the problematic use of alcohol is diagnosed as

Alcohol Use Disorder. It encompasses the daily or regular use of alcohol, as well as the occasional drinker that gets drunk when they drink. There are several criteria cited for the purposes of identifying and diagnosing this disorder in the mental health field. The number of the criteria that are met indicates the severity of the disorder. However, even without a diagnosis many couples may recognize that they have fallen into a pattern of unhealthy drinking. The glass of wine while eating dinner has become a bottle,

or two. A beer or two has become a six pack or more. Having a drink will mean getting drunk. And although some people think they can drink more than others can without visibly displaying signs of impairment, their partner or friends may strongly feel otherwise.Sloppy, angry, over-emotional, loud, aggressive, mean,

and careless are ways that other people describe the negative effects of alcohol on their loved ones. It is very common that people who do have a problem with alcohol are the most defensive of their drinking behavior. Someone who may be experiencing an increase in their consumption due to a stressful life situation or trauma may quickly recognize that they are drinking more than they used to or are comfortable with. While other people who have more of an addictive relationship with alcohol will justify, diminish, or discount someone else’s observation, and will defend their drinking even to the point of relinquishing a relationship before addressing their own drinking. When couples

are drinking together there is often the unspoken code of protecting their use of alcohol, and this denial further reinforces their behavior - “If I recognize that you have a problem then I have to acknowledge that I might also have a problem.”Some important questions to consider is whether your

‘relationship’ with alcohol is problematic to the people who love you (or employ you)? Whether your personality changes in a way you don’t like when you see it in other people when you are sober? Are you finding more time for drinking than other healthier activities, such as working out, being intimate with your partner, spending time with your children? Does alcohol impair your judgment or has it resulted in legal problems, like a DUI offense? Some people recognize that they are getting drunk but are still in denial about whether it is a problem.Even if you and your partner can justify the amount of

alcohol you are consuming and are rationalizing with the “not hurting anyone’ defense, you should still be aware of the unhealthy aspects of excessive drinking. Try to remember that alcohol can negatively affect your health, from excessive weight gain, to undernourished weight loss, toxicity to your liver, strain on your heart, and accidental injury or death from falls. Although we know that we shouldn’t drink and drive, alcohol may distort the ability to make that decision. At home, people may not take into consideration the impact that drinking has on their children’s sense of safety and well-being.Alcohol is a poor replacement for medication. Depression

is exacerbated by alcohol, anxiety is increased by alcohol, and self-esteem is deflated with excessive use. Alcohol is not an antidote to social anxiety, or hyperactivity, or boredom. It is ironic how many people will refuse to take prescribed medication, but will drink in excess. Recognizing your own patterns of drinking and being honest with yourself and your partner is the first step toward improved physical and emotional health.

Indeed, childhood is the most critical period in life as it is during this time that personalities are developed. In this stage, the parents are the child’s primary role models

— ensuring that their kid follows a good path that would shape his or her life later on. It is very disheartening to think that many parents

nowadays, because of the hard life they lead, tend to forget their responsibilities to their children. They forget that even their tiniest gestures can influence their child. It is therefore important to promote the concept of “dreaming big” to their children. Parents who often dream big develop the tendency to work hard for those dreams, indirectly communicating to their children that they can also do the same. There is no losing in dreaming. After all, it is something

that does not require any financial or physical startups — just a creative and determined mind. Dreaming big requires having a positive outlook in life and that includes being optimistic about the future. Of course, the bigger the dream or goal, the scarier it gets, but at the end of the day, a positive mind will surely comprehend that there is nothing scary about trying to be in a better position, and that the passion to succeed is significantly greater than the fear of falling apart. Some parents nowadays, due to many other

commitments, forget that they are indeed the role models of their children. Psychology’s famous concept of behaviorism states that a child is molded by his immediate external environment. Following this, it can be assured that the parents, as the primary forces responsible for a child’s upbringing, are actually the ones to shape the child’s environment. It is only fitting, therefore, that parents give an acceptable amount of attention to their children, as well

as influence them, through their words and actions, that dreaming big is never a scary thing. In a world bombarded with technology, changes,

and innovations, the role of the parents is replaced by computers, mobile applications, and even hired help. This seems to cast a shadow on the parents’ primary role. They are called parents for a reason, and they should behave as one. Working hard for the family is one thing, but having work-life balance is another. As the people primarily in charge of raising their kid, parents should instill in their children and show them that dreaming big pays off. Parents, indeed, should have a positive attitude toward their dreams so that their children can also feel the same. During our Martial arts lessons, we paint the vision of

what it’s like being a black belt. We know it takes years to accomplish getting one, however, we still want the students to dream big. By saying “show black belt excellence!” the students step up to the challenge and push themselves harder. The best thing about being a parent is seeing your child

grow up to become successful in his chosen path. This feeling becomes even better when, as a parent, you know that you have exerted every effort for your child — be it in helping him out with his assignment or inspiring him not to fear dreaming big.

As the weather gets cooler and the leaves change colors, it’s time to savor a new season. Autumn is a ripe time for delicious produce. From pumpkins to

gourds, to winter squashes to apples, adding these super foods to your diet will keep you healthy, happy and satisfied too. Here are some of my favorites:APPLES – Apples are packed with fiber and antioxidants

to keep your immune system strong through the cold and flu season. Make sure to eat the skin, it’s full of fiber and nutrients. Add apples to your smoothies, or eat them raw sprinkled with Ceylon cinnamon to lower blood sugar levels.BRUSSEL SPROUTS --Brussel sprouts are part of the

cabbage family rich in bone-healthy vitamin K, immune-boosting vitamin C plus calcium, potassium, iron and manganese to name a few. Delicious roasted, sautéed, or shredded into a raw slaw salad. KALE - Kale is a hardy, cool season green. It’s a rich

source of vitamins: A, K, C and B, loaded with beta-carotene, as well as calcium, manganese and potassium. Boost your immune system by adding this super green into your daily regime. Add kale to your smoothies or turn kale leaves into delicious baked snack. (see recipe below).

PARSNIPS- Parsnips resemble carrots that are whitish in color with a sweet, flavor. They contain four times more vitamin C than carrots. But that’s not all; parsnips are high in folate and potassium, and loaded with fiber too. Delicious roasted, as fries or add them to your soup stock.PUMPKINS- There is

a lot more to pumpkins than Jack-o-Lanterns. They are super packed with minerals, fiber, iron and vitamin A. Add some in your pancakes or oatmeal to combat sugar cravings. Don’t forget the

pumpkin seeds. These seeds are high in magnesium, zinc, fiber and protein. WINTER SQUASH - butternut, acorn, delicata, and

spaghetti squash are just a few of the varieties of squashes you will see. Just one cup fulfills your vitamin A quota for the day. A good source of immune-boosting vitamin C, makes them the perfect food to eat heading into cold and flu season. Delicious roasted.Eating these sweet seasonal foods will keep your sweet

tooth satisfied, boost your immune system and prepare your body for the winter months ahead.

KALE CHIPS RECIPE:

Ingredients:• 1 bunch curly kale• 1 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil• 2 tbsp. sesame seeds (optional)• sea salt to taste Directions:• Preheat oven to 320 degrees•Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper• Remove the kale leaves from the stems & tear into bite

size pieces • Wash kale and spin completely dry in a salad spinner• Place kale in a large mixing bowl • Drizzle oil and massage into kale. Add in sesame seeds• Spread in a single layer on cookie sheet• Bake for about 10 minutes turning once

They should be crunchy when done. Susan Chasen is a Certified Nutrition

October is here, and we can no longer deny that it’s Fall and that Winter is a reality soon to come. It’s the perfect time for rituals, creating new traditions

and making memories. Who doesn’t love apple picking, pumpkin picking and Fall Harvest Festivals!!?At home, my daughter and I have started a tradition

that came about quite organically. She just started a new school and with changes come the opportunity for creating new routines and rituals, right? When she comes home from school, she is absolutely famished! In the hopes of satisfying her physical hunger and her emotional hunger of being away from home all day, I began assembling a little array of small bowls of snacks for her to choose from. We are a tea-drinking family, and she started drinking tea

when she was a baby! She’s seen me drink countless cups of tea and it’s become a familiar and comfortable pastime of ours. When I started this snack time ritual, I would make a

cup of tea for myself but then she would take my tea! I figured out that I should just make her some, too! (Decaf, of course). So, it’s become our afternoon ritual to have our After-School Tea Party where we sit and I give her my full attention and drink tea and she takes pleasure in tasting each of the snacks I put out for her.

It’s become a ritual for me, too, that I’ve shared on Facebook and quite a few friends have started doing the same and posting pictures of their #afterschoolteaparty. If you’d like to join in the fun and start your own tea time ritual, please share your pictures with me!

Stuart's Farm – Granite Springs62 Granite Springs Road, 914-245-2784The pumpkins here are actually on the vine, not trucked in from elsewhere and dumped on the ground. Don't worry if your little ones don't have the energy to trek around: The fields are stroller-friendly and there are hayrides on week-ends.Outhouse Orchards – North Salem139 Hardscrabble Road, 914-277-3188This apple picking favorite has added a pumpkin patch to its attractions, which include hayrides and a corn maze. Note: There is a fee for parking and, in past seasons, poison ivy, though it's always clearly marked. No car? No problem! You can take Metro-North to the Croton Falls Station and then catch a cab to the farm.

Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard – North Salem130 Hardscrabble Road, 914-485-1210Located directly across the street from Outhouse Or-chards, this family-run farm offers a variety of pumpkins and gourds in its patch. On weekends from September 6 through October 26 (and Columbus Day), there are lots of additional attractions for kids, including hayrides, farm ani-mals, bouncy castles and live music. This farm is also near the Metro-North Croton Falls Station.Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm – Yorktown Heights1335 White Hill Road, 914-245-5111Wilkens' pumpkin patch is scheduled to open on Wednes-day, October 1. The grounds are a bit hilly, so free hayrides are offered. No car? You can take Metro-North to the Cro-ton-Harmon Station and then a 20-minute taxi ride to the farm. Be warned: This place reportedly gets very crowded!

You’re at a networking event and are about to start speaking with someone you just met. You expect to learn a little bit about them and their services and

products their company provides. At some point in your conversation, you are going to want

to be able to give out your business card to them and you expect to receive their card in return. The question o most people ask themselves is “when is it

appropriate to do so?”According to bestselling author Tim Houston, “Typically

people will introduce themselves and immediately attempt to thrust their business card into the hands of the person they just met.” “Not only is this rude because it assumes that the other

person wants your contact information, it also is incredibly intrusive as you are entering the other person's ‘personal space’ without permission,” says Houston. He should know.

For the past 16 years, Houston has been the Area Director for the New York City Outer Boroughs Region of BNI, the world’s largest referral marketing organization. He has seen it all when it comes to good networking versus bad networking – so much in fact that he chronicles the “nightmares of networking” in book , The World’s Worst Networker” which has been called “The definitive guide of how NOT to network!”Houston suggests that anyone can avoid this faux pas by

following three simple rules when it comes to giving and asking for business cards. • “If you are the one who initiated the conversation, do

not ask for the other person's business card until towards the end of the conversation.” “You want to stay focused on the subject and the direction of the conversation. If the conversation is a good one, you want to end it by asking the other person for their card and contact details so that you can stay in touch,” he says. Asking for the card at the end of the conversation shows respect for the other person’s time and their message and sends a message that you listened to them instead of just wanting to get their contact information.” • “Do not give your business card unless specifically asked

by the other person or if you ask and receive permission to give them your card.” Houston says “Just because you’re having a nice conversation doesn’t necessarily mean that other the person wants to stay in touch with you. You may even find yourself looking to get away from them. As cruel as it sounds, there are people who will want your card just so they and put you on their ‘avoid list’.” “If they ask for

Robert Russo’s approach as a BNI Director Consultant is to help individuals use the BNI program though "Givers Gain" and word of mouth marketing to grow their business. He has been doing this for 14 years and his goal is to help chapters grow and grow the region which

includes Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and the Bronx. Non BNI members have even made referrals knowing the

strength of the group and what a successful track record BNI has. The best sources for BNI right now are satisfied BNI members and the new trend in social media.

your card, then give it but always remember to ask if they would like yours in return. Never assume that they do.”• Make sure that your cards are kept in a spot that is easily

accessible. “No one wants to feel awkward. Gentlemen, if you are wearing a jacket, make sure you keep your cards in a pocket on one side and use another pocket inside the jacket or perhaps on your shirt to store the cards from the people you have met at the event. Ladies, you may want to keep your cards in a special spot in your purse or carry around a card case so that you aren't fumbling looking for cards to give out.” “We don’t carry business cards.”A trend that seems to be turning into the norm at some

events is that some of the younger attendees at networking events no longer carry business cards. It has happened several times to Houston over the past

few years. “I would have an amazing conversation and towards the end, when I asked for their card, some have told me they don’t have one to give. This doesn’t mean that they would not like to receive my contact information or give me theirs. When I asked why, some have told me they want to conserve and save natural resources; others want to live a minimalist lifestyle without the clutter.” Whatever their reason, I respect it.”He offers this advice to the ‘seasoned business people”

(i.e. those he says are over age 35): “The immediate reaction by some is to think Millennials

are irresponsible or not serious about their job or business. One thing we have to remember is that the Millennials live in a digital world and communicate differently than prior

generations.”To bridge the digital divide, he offers a compromise:• “I will ask them if they have an app on their smartphone

like Evernote or CamCard. Then I will offer my card so that they can take a photo of it as these apps can scan and import contact information directly into their smartphone's contact manager. (And I’m not offended if they give my card back after doing it).”• “Then I ask them to either text or email their contact

information right there and then, so I can confirm that I got it.”So remember, it is perfectly acceptable to ask for

someone's business card or to offer to give them your card. When you do ask for it or offer yours towards the end of the conversation, it not only respects the other people's time and "space" it also makes you a more effective networker.

Need professional help with your return? Here's how to find the right person for the job.As it gets closer to the end of the year, you get

closer to having to perform the dreaded chore of doing your taxes. Maybe your return has gotten too complicated to handle on your own, or maybe you just don't have the time to fill out all those forms. So now you've decided you need to hire a professional. If your tax situation is relatively simple, you probably think

you can get by with a commercial franchise preparer. Think again! These preparers may be sufficient if you do not itemize deductions or have no other income except your paycheck. Anything more complicated than that may end up costing you more at these franchise preparers than a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Why? Because these preparers are given a quick course in tax preparation and are much less knowledgeable of the tax code, they may miss deductions that could end up costing you more in taxes. Also, their billing structure is complicated and based on the number of deductions you take and the types of income you have. A CPA generally charges an hourly rate or a flat fee which may be cheaper than the franchise. A CPA is available to you for advice and help throughout

the year. If you have financial decisions to make during the year, this advice could be invaluable. So, most people would benefit greatly from the services of a Certified Public Accountant. If you're thinking about enlisting the help of a professional

tax preparer for the first time or are searching for someone new because you're not satisfied with the service you're getting from your current preparer, follow these four steps.Step 1: Get a referral. Ask your friends, family and

colleagues whether they can recommend a tax preparer. If you are new to the area, check with the New York State CPA society, or the state Department of Education for lists of CPAs in your area. Step 2: Interview candidates. If you're trying to hire a new

tax preparer during tax season, you might have a hard time finding someone who can sit down with you for a long interview. That’s why it is good to start before the end of the year. However, most tax preparers should have time for a phone interview. If they aren't willing to give you a few minutes on the phone -- or want to charge you for the initial interview -- then look elsewhere. Here are key questions to ask:How long have you been in practice? You want someone

who has been preparing returns long enough (at least several years) to anticipate problems or IRS challenges. What are your credentials? Anyone can hang out a

sign claiming to be a tax preparer because there are no licensing requirements. Check the NYS Department of Education and other professional associations (see step 1) to assure that he or she is licensed and has had no disciplinary action taken against him or her. Do you have any specialties? This is important to ask if

you have a specific need. For example, if you have a small business or if you have rental property, look for someone who has experience handling these tax situations. How much will you charge? Find out if he or she charges

an hourly rate or flat fee and whether that fee will cover everything or if there will be additional charges for planning meetings and calls throughout the year. Avoid anyone whose fees are based on a percentage of your refund. Will you handle my return, or will you hand it off to a less-

experienced associate? If the preparer is part of a firm and will not be preparing your return personally, ask if he or she will review it after the associate completes it.Will you represent me before the IRS? If you are audited,

you want someone who will defend your return. Step 3: Watch for red flags. Steer clear of anyone who

talks about cheating the IRS. You do not want a preparer who pushes you to take deductions, says you don't have to report certain income or promises to get a refund that will be a certain percentage of what you earn. Step 4: Mention any special circumstances. Let the

preparer know about any events, such as a recent divorce or large lump-sum payment from a retirement plan. He or she should know how this will affect your tax situation. If you’ve followed all these steps, picking a preparer is

easy. You will have selected a knowledgeable professional who will be able to handle all of your specific tax needs and be available if you have questions months, or even years, after your tax return has been filed.

The knowledge Carol [Arrucci / owner of CSPA] provides has enhanced my child’s skills resulting in her being accepted to the Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Vocal Program. I highly recommend enrolling in Carol’s Sight Singing classes! – Ro D., Valhalla

My child took part in the Kids Kabaret program. The staff was attentive, kind and encouraging. The school also has The Music Depot, which provides musical instrument rentals at the best price out of 3 other local rental places we checked. – Ada F., Briarcliff Manor

Highly recommend if you want a local business who cares about their students!– Gina G., Cortlandt
