Messy is the most accurate description of my life at this moment. The kids are finally in bed and I can sit down and take a breather. However, as soon as I plop down on the couch I look around my living room at all of the toys strewn about. I look at the piles of dishes in the kitchen and the bits of food I still need to clean up after a nerve wrack-ing food fight at dinner be-tween my 2 year old and 1 year old. I suddenly remember the clothes that need to be washed out after a surprise upset stomach just before bedtime. Which, of course, reminds me to mop up the bathroom floor from the wa-ter works in the bath tub. This is when I just collapse in frustration. I am tired, dirty and messy. I am a wreck. My emotions are running high. I cannot see beyond my current circumstances. I know God is there with me, but I don't really feel very comforted at this point. I know I am sup-posed to rejoice in the Lord always, but honestly, the last thing I want to do is to stand and rejoice. As mothers of preschoolers we all have times when we feel like we are drowning in our circumstances. Maybe it is

your children, your home, your spouse, your finances, your job or a combination of several. It is often hard to see beyond the messi-ness of our lives. When was the last time

you felt consumed by the

messes in your life?

What made it so hard to

see past these circum-

stances? Read Psalm 40:1-3 1-I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. 2-He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. 3-He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. What does this passage

tell you about your cir-

cumstances?

In what ways has God

lifted you out of your

messes? It can be really hard to

praise God in the midst of

your messy life. What are

some practical ways you

can stop to praise God

when you are overwhelmed?

Psalm 40:1-3 reminds me that God is there for me in the midst of my frustration and my messiness. He has heard my frustrations and my ex-haustion and he has lifted me out of my circumstances and set my feet on solid ground. Because I know where God has set me, I can stand tall even when I cannot see be-yond my circumstances. I know that he is my strength when I am weak. This is why I can rejoice and praise God even when I don't feel like it. For me, praising God in spite of my messy life can be as simple as sitting down, taking a deep breath and remember-ing that the mess that is overwhelming me is tempo-rary. Then I am able to work on cleaning up the messes with a new perspective. I make a mental list and give thanks for the things I am grateful for or try to utter a simple song like "Jesus Loves Me." These simple acts re-mind me that God has taken me out of the mud and mire, given me a firm place to stand and put a new song in my mouth. Therefore, I must rejoice at all times. Penny Saving Tips

Continued from page 1……

What does this passage tell you about rejoicing? Paul wrote this letter while he was in prison, yet he rejoiced. What circumstance is currently holding you

back?

How can you rejoice in the midst of it?

Pray:

Take time to pray together that God would give you a new perspective on the messes in your life and in your team. Pray that each member would be able to see God moving even in your overwhelming circumstances. Pray that you would be able to rejoice in the midst of the messes.

Ways to save on bills: UTILITIES

You can save money by lowering your thermostat by one degree during heating season, around 2% off your monthly bill. Same thing in cooling season raise it by 1 degree or more.

● Pay $5 extra on your electric, phone, water, cable, and gas bills. Doing this January through November, then you can relax in December to a lower monthly bill.

● If you have fans in your house use them to help circulate the cool or warm air. It will help save money by cutting down on your heating or cooling bills.

CREDIT CARDS

If you carry a balance on your credit card, and you can only afford to pay the minimum monthly amount, pay weekly installments instead of one monthly payment.

For example, if you owe $100 per month, pay $25 per week. Because credit card companies ac-crue interest daily on your balance, paying only once a month is a huge det-riment to your financial health.

● Not only that over a years time you will have paid an extra $100 toward that credit card bill, i.e. $25 X 52 = $1300 verses $100 X 12 = $1200.

Plus, look at all the interest you will have saved. This drives the companies crazy though, messes up their bookkeeping schedule. Who cares if it helps you save money?

A Moment of ScienceA Moment of ScienceA Moment of ScienceA Moment of Science Baby Jar Volcano Place an empty baby food jar on a tray. Surround the jar with playdough. Form the dough to look like a mountain. Put a drop of red food coloring and a tablespoon of baking soda in the jar. Then add some vinegar to it to make it erupt.

Invisible Ink Using a cotton swap or paint brush, let children write messages or paint de-signs on white typing paper with lemon juice. Let dry. The adult is to hold the paper close to a light bulb until the writing becomes visible by turning brown.

Trail Mix for Toddlers

1 cup peanuts 1 cup mixed nuts 1 cup dried fruit 1 cup m&m's or mini chocolate chips

Let kids practice measuring by adding one cup of each ingredient. You can substitute whatever you'd like. Stir to blend and serve in mini cups.

Apple Smiles

This is an apple recipe your kids are sure to love. Cut a red apple into slices. (these are the lips) Have child spread peanut butter or cream cheese on apple slice. Place mini marshmallows (these are the teeth) on top of peanut butter and top with other apple slice.

Ways to Zap Zits

1. Wash up! "Never touch fingers to the pimple, and never pop it with makeup on your face," says Dr. Shamban. And break whiteheads only—nothing deep under skin.

2. Be cautious With a clean comedone extractor (at drug-stores), gently press down on the pimple until it opens. Wipe skin and extractor with peroxide.

3. Spot-treat Try Burt's Bees Natural Acne Solutions Tar-geted Spot Treatment ($9.99) to soothe; Clean & Clear Ad-vantage Mark Treatment ($8.49) to minimize scars.

Potato Prints What you need: Potatoes; pencil; utility knife; colored

paint; paper; brush

Let your child make personalized stationery, wrapping

paper, and cards with the help of a potato. To make a

stamp out of a potato, cut it in half and let him draw a

design with a pencil in the circle. Using the utility knife,

carve around the outline of his design and then cut away

the edge, about ½" deep. Now his lovely design should

protrude out from the potato base.

Now your child can use the brush to apply paint to his

potato stamp, then carefully press the potato onto pa-

per. He can repeat with as many designs and colors as he

wants.

Love & Logic Corner

There are few things that leave parents angrier, or more worried, than when their kids act "truthfulness-challenged." The good news about lying is that kids do it. What I mean is that all young-sters experiment with bending the truth, and it doesn't necessarily mean that they'll end up becom-ing con men, criminals or politicians. That is, as long as we can help them see that honesty really is the best policy.

One way of achieving this goal is to apply the following steps: 1. Use "I feel like you lied to me" rather than "You lied to me." 2. If your kid replies with "No, I didn't!" this allows you to say, "I know…but I feel like you did." 3. Help the child see lying as an index of maturity. Achieve this by saying, "When I feel lied to, it makes me wonder whether you are mature enough to handle some of the privileges you enjoy around here, like television, your video games, and things like that." 4. In an empathetic way, let the child know that privileges will return when maturity goes up. "The good news is that when you can prove to me that you are more mature, I'll know that it's time for you to have these privileges again." Remember that parenting isn't like a jury trial: There's no need to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Far too many parents get snowed by their manipulative kids and begin to wonder whether they are jumping to conclusions. I recommend trusting your heart and saying, "All I know is that I feel lied to, and I know that your life will be a lot happier if you learn how to avoid leaving people feeling that way."

What kind of gift? What kind of gift? What kind of gift? What kind of gift? Something fun, different yet unique, and not embarrassing (in good taste). Some past favorites have been Starbucks gift cards, home décor items, etc. It isn’t a matter of money that makes a particular gift a hit.

So how do we play the game? So how do we play the game? So how do we play the game? So how do we play the game? The wrapped gifts are put on a table where everyone can get to them easily to pick-up, shake, inspect, and select. Player #1 picks a gift and opens it. #1 shows it around, models it, and reads it or demos it depending on what is it of course. Then, #2 is the next gift opener, she can select another unopened gift (an open it,

show it around, model it, read it or demo it) or take the gift #1 had opened. If she takes #1’s gift, #1 must select another unwrapped gift. A gift can only be in three peoples hands. The third person gets to keep it.

My little girl, Payton and her little brother Paxton both go to the First Baptist Learning Center. They were having

the firemen visit last week and I knew that Paxton would be scared of the firemen when they donned their full

fireman gear so I asked Payton how Paxton did after that day and she said, "Well, bubby (as she calls him) wasn't

doing very well when they first came in but when they all got naked he did a lot better." After questioning her

about this and trying my best not to die laughing, I real-ized that what she meant was when they took off all of

their gear and masks.

My 3 year old son overheard me talk-ing on the phone with my sister-in-law telling her that Aunt Carol, Uncle Doug and Aunt Cindy were coming to visit us

from North Carolina. Later after I had gotten off the phone my son said, “Mommy, I want to see Uncle Bug!” It took me awhile to figure out that he actually wanted to see Uncle Doug.

What you need: • Storybooks • Books with rhymes What to do: Take a picture walk. Before they can read words, young children use picture cues to retell stories. Invite your toddler to describe what is happening in the illustrations of a favorite book. Ask lots of questions to hone his ob-servation skills. Make time to rhyme. Distinguishing sounds is an important component of literacy development. Reread a rhyming book a few times so that he can listen to the sound patterns and rhythm of the story. Encourage him to chime in as he learns the story, and to clap when the words rhyme. Extend or create a story. This activity encourages creativity, language skills, and such important literary skills as developing a beginning, middle, and end of a story. Read a book and invite him to make up his own story about the main character, create a sequel to the story, or make up his own ending. You can also encourage him to make his own book by drawing a few illustrations.

Learning benefits: • builds vocabulary • strengthens pre-reading skills • encourages oral language development

Why Your Toddler Keeps Asking the Same Question

Every single night before 22-month-old Ari Fader-Van Luyn nods off, he asks his mom who else is sleeping at their house--on an endless loop. "It's the same questions, over and over again," says his mom, Sarah Fader, of Brooklyn. "He'll also point at our cat and ask, 'What's that?' and two seconds later, ask again. After giving the same answer 3,000 times, I want to move on!"

Many toddlers just seem to love these repeated inquiries--much to their parents' chagrin. why? Leon Hoffman, M.D., codirector of the Pacella Parent Child Center at the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute, can name a few reasons. He says they might be trying to: Understand Words: Children between the ages of 1 and 2 are just learning to talk, so they repeat questions to get clear on what each word means. Build Memory: Sometimes it takes a little while for new information to sink into a toddler's developing mind. Hearing a trusted parent give the same answers time and again can help drive unfamiliar concepts home. Check In: Since toddlers find comfort in repetition, rewinding and replaying questions is just a way of asking for emotional support. Dr. Hoffman suggests you take the time to answer as often as you can stand it. "Your child is asking for a rea-son, even if that's not always clear. Be matter-of-fact and don't let it get to you," he says. "It will pass!"

Common Symptoms During 3rd Trimester Overview

The last trimester of pregnancy is full of contrasts: You're revved up for the homestretch but tired. You're thirsty but you often have to go to the bathroom. Treating your body -- and mind -- to the right kind of care is essential. Here's how your body changes, and how best to take care of yourself.

Growing fatigue

Not only are you lugging around an extra 20 to 30 pounds (or more), your expanding uterus rearranges other organs in your body, adding extra strain. You'll likely have to slow down a little, but you also want to keep your energy up. So:

Do small amounts of exercise. A walk around the block will do the trick. Swimming and prenatal yoga are good options, too, but make sure you listen to your body. If you're tiring sooner, slow down. And if the thought of even rising from an armchair seems like a workout, just stay put.

Take short breaks at work. Put your feet up, and, if possible, take a few minutes to close your eyes.

Eat small, frequent meals and snacks (with a healthy mix of protein and complex carbs). Walnuts and dried fruit are a great snack to keep stashed in your purse or desk.

If your energy level feels really low, check with your doctor. You might be suffering from anemia -- which an iron supplement can fix.

Back pain

An expanding belly can throw off your posture, and the hormone re-laxin, which loosens your joints in anticipation of delivery, exacer-bates the stress on your body. There are several things you can do to fool gravity and ease your aches:

* Do pelvic tilts: Rock your pelvis back and forth while kneeling on all fours, keeping your back straight.

* Try an under-the-belly support garment, such as the Bellybra, and maternity pantyhose.

*When you sleep, support your back and abdomen with extra padding underneath your back. If you sleep on your side, wedge a pillow between your legs to create equilibrium for your hips. A maternity pillow might not be a bad investment, especially if you have an older mattress.

* Ask for help -- if someone offers to lift something for you, say yes! Frequent urination

Since your uterus puts pressure on your bladder most heavily in the third trimester, this means you'll probably have to go to the bathroom more than you ever did before. What's even more annoying is that you might have sudden, uncontrollable urges to urinate, called urge incontinence (over 40 percent of first-time moms experience it). Try to urinate on a schedule (every hour or two), so that you go before you feel an overwhelming need. After a week or so, gradually extend the time between bathroom visits until you're urinating every three hours (or you reach the goal set by you and your doctor). It's also im-portant to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day to stay properly hydrated and to eat plenty of high-fiber foods to prevent constipation. And avoid caffeine, a diuretic that can make urge incontinence worse.

At our November Meeting we will have LOTS of wonderful women showing off their products and businesses. Take a look through the list of people and items that they will be selling and make plans to attend and start shopping early for Christmas gifts!

Our MOPS group will not be participating in the Operation Christ-mas Child this year as we will be adopting some families through the Women’s Crisis Center. However if you would like to create a box to send for Operation Christmas Child you can check out the link below to find out what needs to go in the boxes and then drop off at C of O between November 15-21st.
