Instructions on Aluminum Plate 1. Print out your image- 5X5 (make sure it’s a close- up) 2. Practice on a test piece 3. Cut and tape your photo to the front of your metal 4. Use Styrofoam or newspaper for pressure 5. Trace your animal outline and fur texture with a pencil 6. Check for thoroughness 7. Begin pushing out the form with the rounded end of the

scissors 8. Push out the most protruding part of the face next.

– i.e. : snout, beak, nose, trunk, etc.

9. Define other features – Eyes, ears, cheek bones, veins, etc.

11. Sand down with steel wool 12. Wipe oil from plate with cleaner 13. Paint your first coat of Gesso. Allow it to dry completely before painting the next two coats. PAINT 3 COATS OF GESSO. 14. Begin painting your plate with oil paints. 15. Start with the lightest colors. 16. Exaggerate your colors!!!! 17. Begin planning your next three plates. 18. Dry off any water on your paintbrush!!

• Grid 8x10 High Contrast Photo • Grid 12x15 watercolor paper • Draw everything as you see it. • Begin painting everything that has been drawn in with a

color of your choice. Black and white is standard. • *Create another high contrast of a picture of your choice.

If you cant think of one or find one I’ll print out another self portrait for you with multiple values!
