Featured Member: New England Everyday Goods

By Annie Card, Annie Card Creative Services

Jim and Susan Therriault opened New England Everyday Goods in October 2010. Barely 400 square-feet, the space housed the business for about a year, before they packed up and moved across the street to a 1,200-SF space in Peterborough’s Depot Square. Then in January 2014, the couple bought an 11,000-square-foot building in neighboring Jaffrey, the former home of Coll’s Farm Stand. It

was a strategic move to gain more retail space and provide a richer shopping experience, including picturesque hilltop views of fi elds and pasture, a windmill and a sugar house. “This is home; it’s just the perfect New England spot,” Jim said.

New England Everyday Goods is packed with thousands of items, all made in New England: wood toys, balsam pillows, glassware, pottery, soaps, cutting boards, specialty foods and more. The Farm Market will occupy the same space as the original Coll’s Farm Stand, and shoppers buying produce and other fresh foods can walk just a few steps inside to NEEG.

“Coll’s Farm is a local legend and landmark,” Jim said. “People miss it and we’re honored to open the Farm Market in the same location.” The Coll family will still provide their own maple syrup, eggs, sweet corn and other produce to the market. With so much more space, Jim and Susan will be able to add a broader selection of local products.

“New England Everyday Goods and the Farm Market are a perfect cross pollination of two businesses,” Jim explained. “Our daughter, Hannah, started working at Coll’s Farm Stand in 2008. We liked shopping here, and we know there are a lot of people missing the farm stand. We’re excited to stock it with fresh eggs, produce, bulk foods, and other items our customers want.”

“We don’t want people to just buy stuff. We want them to enjoy shopping here, and to feel good about what they’re buying: the quality as well as knowing their purchases are helping many small businesses to continue. We know that small businesses make better, more interesting communities than giant chain stores,” Susan said.

“Purchases at our store and other mom and pops, help keep jobs and dollars in our local economy. In the past year alone, several of our suppliers have expanded their operations and added employees. We feel good about that and our customers should too.” Jim said.

Badger makes certified organic and truly natural balms, oils, and lip balms, as well as one of the safest zinc sunscreens on the market. We’re family owned, family friendly, and a certified Benefit Corporation – a statement of our commitment to sustainability and transparency.

Top Ten Reasons to Buy Local

Signifi cantly more money re-circulates when purchases are made at locally-owned, rather than nationally-owned, businesses: Locally owned busi-nesses tend to purchase from other local businesses, service providers and farms.

Most new jobs are provided by locally-ownedbusinesses: If the fi ve million households inNew England shifted 10% of their annual budget toLocal Independents it would create 48,000 new jobs.

Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of our distinctive character: Our unique local character is what brought us here and will keep us here.

Local business owners invest in community: Local businesses are owned by people who live locally, and are more invested in the community’s future.

Customer service is better: Local businesses are closer to the customer and tend to hire people with more specifi c product expertise for better customer service.

Competition and diversity lead to more choices: A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based on the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices.

Reduced environmental impact: Shoppingat locally owned businesses is more energy effi cient. Locally owned businesses make more local purchases thus reducing their transportation costs.

Public benefi ts far outweigh public costs: Local businesses require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more effi cient use of public ser-vices as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community.

Encourages investment in our community: A growing body of economic research shows thatentrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely tosettle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kindbusinesses and distinctive character.

Non-profi ts receive greater support: Non-profi t organizations receive an average 350% greater support from local business owners than they do from non-locally owned businesses.

By April Atwood The “support local” message is catching on more than ever in America and as we continue to become better educated regarding the positive economic benefi ts of shifting our spending to locally owned businesses. It’s apparent these habits need to be preserved and nurtured among our youth.

Luckily for parents, there’s a ready-made audience for teaching the support-local message. Yes, we’re talking about your children. Those crumb-snatching little rascals represent the future of our country, and passing on your sound habits is the easiest way to create a generation of conscious shoppers.

However, trying to teach your child good habits can be like attempting a complicated gymnastics routine with no formal training. So instead of adding another thing to nag your child about, employing a “show instead of tell” method can help you get them to make it habitual to support your community. For example:

1. Take them with you on local shopping outings

Actions speak louder than words, especially to children. When your fi nger-biting habit suddenly becomes your kid’s fi nger-biting habit, this becomes frighteningly obvious. And the same goes for your spending habits. Almost all kids know Target and Chuck-E-Cheese, but how many can name the locally owned options in their area?

Just one look at your own shopping habits will give you an idea of the values you’re passing down to your children. Supporting local is a learned behavior, so make it a point to support local with the kids in tow, showing off the diversity and uniqueness of your local business community.

Teaching Kids the Value of Going Local

Page 12: Monadnock Buy Local 2014-2015 Guide

This might mean altering your routine to include small businesses for regular items.

2. Visit the farmer’s market

Mary Poppins was right when she said that an element of fun can make any chore seem enticing. And so, instead of going on about the various reasons to always choose local fi rst, why not take your kids to the veritable wonderland of local fare that is the farmer’s market. Because many are on weekend mornings, you can easily fi t in at least one trip a month with the kids. At most markets you’ll fi nd everything from locally grown produce to handmade hats, and a great outpouring of community support.

The farmer’s market also allows for a much more interactive shopping experience. Allowing your children to help you shop at the farmer’s markets can teach sound economic decisions, and hopefully an appreciation for fresh fruits and vegetables. Not only that, but interacting with farmers and merchants will give your kids a sense of connection to the products they are purchasing.

3. Get them involved in the community

Supporting local is more than just where you shop. Becoming a part of the community can lead to lifelong habits. Summertime is the perfect time to engender great local habits in your children, with something as simple as taking part in locally run day camps for kids; visiting children’s author readings at local bookstores; or family outings to a local art walk.

A deep connection with your community usually begins in childhood, and it can last a lifetime if you make the effort to teach your child

simple local shopping habits.
