House of Grace underscores McGehee=s good fortuneat July. The filly launched her career at this sale twoyears ago, when, after a brief power outage kept thepavilion in the dark for several minutes, trainer KenMcPeek saw off all challengers to land the filly for$100,000. Three years before that, at the 2005 July Sale,McGehee sold an Include filly to Mike Ryan for$110,000. Pinhooked the following spring and boughtby Glencrest Farm for $225,000, Panty Raid became atwo-time Grade I-winning millionaire. McGehee has also bred and/or raised the likes ofGISW Imperial Gesture (Langfuhr), whom she co-bredwith John R. Gaines; GSW Ravalo (Mutakddim); andGSW and 18-time winner Monashee (Wolf Power{SAf}). McGehee=s most famous pupil, however, is one thatshe neither bred nor sold. Reigning Horse of the YearRachel Alexandra (Medaglia d=Oro) was foaled and grewup at McGehee=s farm near Lexington, also calledHeaven Trees, and the Classic winner=s dam, Lotta Kim(Roar), is still a resident at the farm, as is the majorityof Dolphus Morrison=s bloodstock. Morrison bred andformerly owned Rachel Alexandra. AShe was a big, good-looking filly,@ McGehee recalledof Rachel Alexandra. Asked how it=s been watching Rachel wrack upachievement after achievement, McGehee laughed andsaid, AIt=s been great! We=d like to do it again.@ McGehee indeed hopes racing=s next superstar iscurrently residing at Barn 9 on the Newtown Paddocksales grounds. A Langfuhr half-sister to House of Gracewas catalogued here as hip 240 before being an 11th-hour defection, joining another Heaven Trees out in hip360, but McGehee still has a strong pair heading intoJuly. On Tuesday, hip 149, a colt by Langfuhr goesunder the hammer. The Apr. 23-foaled bay was pro-duced by Alcea (Honour and Glory), a half-sister toCanadian champion Wilderness Song (Wild Again) andto Rhythm of Life (Deputy Minister), dam of Classicwinner Sarava (Wild Again).

AHe is pretty,@ said McGehee. AI had the full-brother tohim in July a few years ago [the now three-year-oldFandino, a maiden special weight winner at Santa Anitain March who brought $100,000 on Mike Ryan=s bid].He was a bigger, stouter, courser colt. This is a morerefined colt. He looks more like the mare.@ McGehee added of the sire, ALangfuhr=s been good tome. Imperial Gesture was from his first crop, and I likehim a lot. I think he=s a bargain. They=re not the mostbeautiful yearlings at the sale, but you know they=regoing to run.@ McGehee=s other offering, hip 244, is actually a half-sis-ter to another McGehee-breddaughter of Langfuhr, GSPCall the Kitty. From the sec-ond crop of the Unbridled=sSong stallion Rockport Harbor, hip 244 is a daughter of HelloKitty Kitty (Tale of the Cat). AShe=s a great, big Januaryfoal,@ said McGehee. AShe=s a masculine kind of filly.@ Born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, McGeheesaid she was led to the Thoroughbred business by alove of animals. AI was one of those girls---bringing home animals allthe time,@ she explained. AAnd I had a pony. I was justhorse crazy.@ After high school, she attended Auburn University, and it was while interning for a veterinarian one sum-mer that she decided to pursue that line of work. Shewent to Florida University (AThe Fighting Gators!@), andanother internship, at Castleton Farm in Kentucky (thena Standardbred operation, now Castleton Lyons) intro-duced her to Kentucky. McGehee officially made the move to the Bluegrass in1984. In the late >80s, she opened her own veterinarypractice, but a decade later, she was doing much morethan just practicing medicine. Heaven Trees Farm haddeveloped into a commercial operation, with some 135boarders. McGehee was foaling some 85 mares eachspring while somehow still maintaining clients as a vet.

Eventually, a change was in order. @Three or four years ago, I decided that I=d like to

have a life,@ she explained, and sodrastically cut the number of mares onthe farm. Morrison is now her onlyoutside client. There are currently 23mares on the farm that are active, butthere are also a number of older maresand retirees that are living out theirdays on the property, a handsome es-tate that bears the signs of McGehee=slove of gardening.

A strong work ethic isn=t something that just goes, however, and the industrious McGehee has kept busywith the Heaven Trees consignment. Heading into the 2010 sales season, she admits tobeing a tad nervous, much like many other consignors. AI=ll just be waiting and watching, I guess,@ she said.AI don=t know what=s going to happen. I want to beoptimistic, but I don=t know. We=re smaller, we=retighter, and we=re breeding less. We=re hunkering down, and we=ll see what happens.@ -L Marquardt

JRHA Sale Starts Today (cont. from p1) Yet such expressions of enthusiasm were accompa-nied by palpable trepidation in other quarters, where theoverall shaky condition of the economy worldwide andwithin Japan was a primary source of concern. AIt feels a bit like being on death row,@ said HarrySweeney of Paca Paca Farm when asked about hisview of the market for the four yearlings and 10 foalshe has in the catalog. AThat=s the honest answer.@ AThe catalog seems somewhat light,@ said MartinO=Dowd, vice president and general manager ofRunnymede Farm in Paris, Kentucky, which will offertwo yearlings and two foals bred in Japan. AEverybodyis talking about the depressed economy and someconsignors don=t seem optimistic, but I=m hoping it willbe better than I anticipate.@ Although the number of buyers may be growing insome segments of the market, the number who canacquire horses at the top end is declining, officialsagreed, indicating they are not expecting major fire-works on either day of the reformatted two-sessionsale. The previous format that featured two foal ses-sions has been reduced to one day for foals to accom-pany the single yearling session. Cont. p6

captivate racing fansthroughout the island na-tion as they eagerly fol-low the racecourse de-buts of his first offspringthis year. Produced by aFrench and AmericanGroup 3 winner who fin-ished second in the G1Prix Marcel Boussac attwo, the colt is a half-

brother to five winners, two in England and three inJapan. His second dam is multiple American Grade Iwinner Stella Madrid (Alydar), who produced Japanesechampion mare Diamond Biko (Jpn) (Sunday Silence). The third dam is American champion sprinter My Juliet(Gallant Romeo), who produced Grade I winner TisJuliet (Alydar).

Hip 87, c, A.P. Indy--Ermine, by Exchange RateConsigned by Northern Farm

Although the offspring of American-based sires typi-cally do not sell as well in Japan as do horses by Japa-

nese stallions, this blocky chest-nut will be noteworthy as thefirst foal of his Grade I-winningdam. Northern Farm ownerKatsumi Yoshida purchased Er-mine, who won the 2007 GI Ap-ple Blossom H. and finished sec-ond in the 2006 GI KentuckyOaks, for $1.3 million while shewas carrying this colt at the

2008 Keeneland November sale. Ermine produced aDeep Impact colt in February. This is the family of topEuropean sprinter Sakhee=s Secret (GB) (Sakhee).

Hip 164, c, King Kamehameha (Jpn)--Cascade Bouquet(Jpn), by Special Week (Jpn)Consigned by Shadai Farm

A blending of one of Japan=s hottest sires with oneof the most recently successful female families, this

colt is out of a three-quarter sis-ter to two-time championsprinter and miler Daiwa Major(Jpn) (Sunday Silence), a Classicwinner and five-time Group 1victor who earned $9,208,471,and to champion and Classic-winning filly Daiwa Scarlet(Agnes Tachyon {Jpn} ), a four-time Group 1 winner and earnerof $7,390,071. This colt=sgranddam, a four-time groupstakes winner herself, also pro-duced Classic-placed group win-ner Daiwa Rouge (Jpn) (SundaySilence) and three other stakes-placed winners and has a juve-nile colt from the first crop of

Deep Impact named Picasso (Jpn).

While there are many successful owners and breedersin Japan, there is no doubt that brothersTeruya and Katsumi Yoshida are the domi-nant forces. With broodmare bands thatplace them among the handful of breedersatop the world judging by both numbers andquality, they perennially are 1-2 on Japan=slists of leading owners and breeders and areresolutely competitive even with each other.Their horses have won premier internationalprizes--such as Teruya Yoshida=s Heart=s Cry(Jpn) (Sunday Silence), who won the G1Dubai Sheema Classic, and KatsumiYoshida=s Delta Blues (Jpn) (Dance in theDark {Jpn}), victor in Australia=s G1 Mel-bourne Cup--and thus have elevated the rep-utation of Japanese-breds around the globe. Joined by their younger brother, owner and breederHaruya Yoshida, in running the powerhouse ShadaiStallion Station, the Yoshidas= influence stretches into

North America and Europe as they are frequent buyersat the top of elite bloodstock markets on both conti-nents. Before the Japan Racing Horse Association=sbenchmark sale of yearlings and foals began on Mon-day, Teruya Yoshida, the master of Shadai Farm, dis-cussed the state of Japan=s market and other topicswith Michele MacDonald. Katsumi Yoshida, owner ofNorthern Farm, plans to do a similar interview at the

completion of the sale.

Q: How would you describe the state ofthe bloodstock market in Japan now afterseveral years of general economic de-clines?

Teruya Yoshida: The general economy isvery tough. We can=t be so optimistic inthis environment. We haven=t experiencedsuch a bad economy before, so we wantto see what=s going on with the horsemarket in the next few days. Theprizemoney in this country is still very, very good, so that helps, and there aremany horse lovers who are keen to ownracehorses even in this economy. Some

are looking forward to a weaker market because it is agood opportunity to buy, but the number of buyers atthe very top of the market is reduced. Cont. p9

Q: What are your expectations regarding your ownconsignment of 89 horses (54 yearlings and 35 foals)considering the economic situation?

Teruya Yoshida: I am not so much worried about theeconomy. [Shadai] is receiving so many owners andtrainers who want to see our horses. The prices mightnot be so great, but there should be plenty of buyers.

Q: Do you foresee a continuing shift in the preferenceof Japanese buyers toward yearlings and away fromfoals?

Teruya Yoshida: I don=t know yet. There is only one foalsession this year, so the number of foals on the marketis small, but there are many people who want to seefoals here [at Shadai Farm], so the interest remainsstrong.@

Q: As the economy has tightened, have you divertedmore of your young stock to racing rather than tosales?

Teruya Yoshida: Shadai Farm has clients who are stillvery active in racing and when they are happy to buy, Iam happy to sell. There is no difficulty in finding cli-ents, and when the cost of horses bred by Shadai is thesame, the quality is much better [in this kind of mar-ket], so the benefit to clients is good. My business planhas not changed.

Q: How many racing syndicates or groups is Shadaiinvolved with in racehorse ownership?

Teruya Yoshida: Most of the horses bought by clientshave one owner, although there is one large partner-ship. With some expensive horses, like [G1 TokyoYushun (Japanese Derby) winner] Eishin Flash (Jpn)(King=s Best), we kept a half interest.@

Q: How many horses in training do you own?

Teruya Yoshida: Plenty (laughs). Including horses inwhich we keep 10-percent ownership, we have about200 in training now. There are a few I have 100-per-cent ownership in, like [G1 Yushun Himba (JapaneseOaks) dead-heat winner] Saint Emilion (Jpn) (Zenno RobRoy {Jpn}), and some others I have a 50-percent inter-est in. Horses I have bred have been doing well, so itdoesn=t matter so much how big my interest is. (smiles)

Q: Shadai is one of the world=s most prolific and suc-cessful breeding farms. How much land does it encom-pass and how many mares are in your broodmare band?

Teruya Yoshida: AThere are about 500 hectares [about1,236 acres] total, with the main area about 300 hect-ares [741 acres] and another branch and a trainingcenter. There are 450 mares, and we have about 60 to70 mares owned by clients that we board.@

Q: Do you keep horses in other countries?

Teruya Yoshida: We have one mare in America now andI have three two-year-olds in France that are European-breds. Every summer we go to Deauville and it is fun tohave horses there. My trainers are Andre Fabre, DavidSmaga and Pascal Bary because we see those peoplealmost every morning at breakfast at our hotel and Ican greet them with a big smile.@

Q: You have acquired many outstanding mares in re-cent years in Europe and America. What selection crite-ria do you use and has there been any market that hasbeen particularly productive for you?

Teruya Yoshida: Any group (or graded) stakes winner isOK, but from my economic status, I buy many Italianand German group winners. Sometimes I buy Frenchmares because I have a good French agent [PatrickBarbe]. There have been many good mares I=ve boughtin America and at Tattersalls. If they are good, they willbe good anywhere. But we don=t know what will hap-pen until they produce foals, so I have to buy a numberof mares. Sometimes the expensive ones aren=t suc-cessful and the so-so ones are. Maybe one or two from10 will be good ones. It=s fun to see how they go. Weare always looking if the price is OK.@

RINGSIDE...with Michele MacDonald

Q: Which horses would you rate the best you have bred?

Teruya Yoshida: Heart=s Cry (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), theG1 Dubai Sheema Classic winner [and the onlyJapanese-bred to defeat Triple Crown winner DeepImpact (Jpn) {Sunday Silence}], and Neo Universe (Jpn)(Sunday Silence), who won two Japanese Classic racesand now is a successful sire. We=ve been doing verywell. Our percentages of starters and winners are veryhigh and that is a good characteristic of this farm.

Q: Which horse in your consignment do you feel hasoutstanding potential?

Teruya Yoshida: The Zenno Rob Roy colt foal (Hip 377)out of winner Festa Delle Donna (Jpn) (Hector Protec-tor). Everybody likes him, so maybe he will be fairlyexpensive.

Q: With more than half the sale catalog formed by theoffspring of Sunday Silence or out of daughters orgranddaughters of Sunday Silence, has the influence ofthat blood exceeded a saturation point in Japan? Arenew lines needed and are you seeking new stallions forthe Shadai Stallion Station?

Teruya Yoshida: It=s a matter of course. We=ve been[seeking new bloodlines and stallions] since my baby-hood. They are not so easy to find, but we have tomeet the challenge anyway.

Q: Which of the sires at the Shadai Stallion Stationcould be the next national leader following the 13-yearreign of Sunday Silence and years following his death in2002 of other horses vying for the top position?

Teruya Yoshida: There are some good ones and theyare competing now. Sunday Silence=s son Zenno RobRoy [Japan=s 2004 Horse of the Year and 2009 leadingfreshman sire who was produced by American Grade Iwinner Roamin Rachel (Mining)] has a good chance. Hisoffspring look good and my feeling is he will be some-thing special.

WAR EMBLEM SAGA CONTINUES Just when War Emblem (Our Emblem) appeared to beon his way to a more normal life as a breeding stallion,he has suddenly reverted to the disdain for coveringmares that has shadowed the years since he won the2002 Kentucky Derby and Preakness S. Officials with the Shadai Stallion Station on the islandof Hokkaido in Japan said the now 11-year-old horse

only covered five of themore than 300 marespresented to him duringthe recently completedbreeding season. His lack of interest fol-lows the 2009 seasonduring which the nearlyblack War Emblem im-pregnated more maresthan at any other time, with a career-high 43

foals born in 2010, said Eisuke Tokutake, who overseesstallion nominations for Shadai. Cont. p11

Tokutake and Naoki Sakuda, the groom who cares forWar Emblem and previously worked with the legendarySunday Silence, indicated that no one has a clear expla-nation for why War Emblem cannot seem to maintaininterest in breeding. APeople cannot choose the mares for him; he selectshis mares,@ Tokutake said. AProbably he is a shy guywho is afraid of the mares,@ Sakuda said. AHe=s verydifficult--shy but wild and selfish.@ While the Yoshida family, which operates the ShadaiStallion Station, has demonstrated infinite patience withthe horse they paid an estimated $17 million to obtainfor stud duty when he was a three-year-old, it is notclear what options remain. AWe don=t know what he will do next year,@ saidTeruya Yoshida, owner of Shadai Farm and a partnerwith his brothers in the operation of the stallion station.AWe=ve done everything we can do.@ Yoshida=s all-encompassing comment probably isnonetheless an understatement. War Emblem has beenhoused in a manner highly atypical for a breeding stal-lion, kept in the remote and tranquil Barn 9 at KatsumiYoshida's Northern Farm with only mares and filliessurrounding him. This housing situation was suggestedby equine behavior specialists who have worked withthe horse and suggested he might have been intimi-dated when stabled with older, dominant stallions. This year, the Yoshidas committed virtually all of themares they own at Shiraoi Farm, a family venture over-seen by the umbrella Shadai Corp., to War Emblem.Vans would travel from the Shiraoi property to Barn 9,stop for however long it took War Emblem to reject (or,in a few cases, accept) the mares on board, and thencontinue on to the Shadai Stallion Station for the maresto be bred to more willing mates, Tokutake said. AHe tries to bite or kick or strike,@ Sakuda said whiledescribing how War Emblem reacted to most mares. When he did decide to breed, his coverings were normal. Known as a tough horse to handle while racing, WarEmblem lunges at Sakuda repeatedly when he isbrought out for visitors, snapping at the groom andslapping at his lead shank. AI=ve learned a lot from this horse--too many things,@said Sakuda, who undoubtedly also was taught muchby the spirited Sunday Silence. ABut still there is more Ihave to learn.@ After eight seasons at stud, War Emblem has siredonly 102 foals, with none reported in 2007 and 2008.But his foals that have made it to the races have donewell, including 2008 Classic-winning filly Black Emblem(Jpn). AWar Emblem has some good foals born this year, sowe hope we can make one or two stallions out ofthem,@ Yoshida said.
