To the community, to the staff, to the parents, to the alumni, and most importantly to our student body:

As fellow students here on campus, we understand what you are feeling right now and have been feeling for the past few days. We are here to let you know that as an ASB, we feel the same way and we are just as hurt and disappointed by the hateful behavior that has occurred on and off campus. These actions are not condoned, supported, or appreciated by us in any way, shape, or form, and we do not take any of it lightly. These actions do not represent the whole of our athletics program, the whole of our staff, and the whole of our student body, as it does not accurately reflect the beliefs that many of our students have.

As student leaders on campus, we are on your side in advocating for change on this campus. We want to stress that we are here for you all, and we want you to feel safe when being at school. We want our students to be able to communicate anything, from concerns and fears to suggestions and ideas. We are here to help facilitate growth, kindness, and positivity on campus.

But we need your help - we cannot stand alone in this journey. We will need the help of the community, the staff, and most importantly, the students. We must face what has happened in the community and take on being a part of the solution with patience, courage, and fearlessness. We ask that we do whatever we can to respect each other and keep one another safe in this time of tension and rehealing. Moving forward, we cannot change what happened, but we will work our hardest to educate, learn, and grow from it. Moving forward, we will not let hate become normalized and instead push to introduce and consistently reinforce a new and stronger culture on campus that promotes love and respect for all. Moving forward, we will stand united. " This will go on @pacificaasb on instagram which is our main form of social media. Please let me know if there are any changes or additional messages. Kind Regards, Jessica On ASB President2019-2020

Rabbi Levi from the ADL spoke to Mariners to actively challenge stereotyping, bias and all forms of discrimination. Anti-bias mastery skills include: understanding the various dimensions of identity; learning and applying basic terms relating to bias and discrimination; increasing understanding of the impact of culture and differences on communication; and recognizing, acknowledging and confronting bullying, bias and discrimination in themselves, others and within institutions.

Officials in Illinois said on Friday that a person who had recently used an e-cigarette and was hospitalized with severe lung illness had died. The death appears to be the first among a spate of mysterious lung illnesses now under investigation by state and federal health officials in connection to vaping. Reports of the number of people hospitalized for vaping-related lung illnesses have doubled in the past week, Illinois officials said in a statement. At least 22 people, ranging in age from 17 to 38, have experienced respiratory illness after using e-cigarettes or vaping. The affected individuals have had symptoms including cough, shortness of breath and fatigue, officials said.

A New Generation Is Getting Hooked on Nicotine.

Among youth, e-cigarettes are more popular than any traditional tobacco product. In 2015, the U.S. surgeon general reported that e-cigarette use among high school students had increased by 900 percent, and 40 percent of young e-cigarette users had never smoked regular tobacco.

There seems to be three reasons e-cigarettes may be particularly enticing to young people. First, many teens believe that vaping is less harmful than smoking. Second, e-cigarettes have a lower per-use cost than traditional cigarettes. Finally, vape cartridges are often formulated with flavorings such as apple pie and watermelon that appeal to younger users.
