Monday, March 27, 2017 Today, we surveyed harmful algal blooms, went on a marine protected area watch, and looked at creatures in intertidal pools! After breakfast, we went down to the dock to conduct water quality tests and tow for algae. As some of us were still kicking our smartphone addictions, we tried our best to take selfies… with the wind speed meter. We also identified some Pseudo-nitzschia, Chatonella, and Ceratium along with quite a few false alarms including pieces of algae, salt crystals, and the poop of an unknown organism. However, with the constant help and support of Lorraine, our skills improved greatly and we watched barnacle and crab nauplii zip around the field of view and a few unknown eggs float around. After we had become experts at toxic algae identification, we set out on a Marine Protected Area (MPA) Watch hike to observe human activity in the MPA. Though we saw no human activity, we saw plenty of beautiful wildflowers and amazing views of the rocky cliffs dropping away into a sparkling deep blue ocean. We did our best to pick our way around the many cacti, with some suffering a few minor casualties at the spines of particularly sneaky cacti. Particularly, our fellow classmate, Gabe, had a bit of an altercation with one and got a few needles implanted in his shoe. However, we soon found out the cacti were nothing compared to the dreaded Cursed Invasive Mustard Forest. With blood, sweat, and tears, we bravely battled the vicious mustard forests together, with a few brave souls, Noah, even ripping out the plants by the roots. At last we emerged victorious and headed straight to a delicious lunch of (rotato) potato tacos! Next, we learned about intertidal organisms and observation protocol. After we A-C-E ACE, ACE, ACE, ACED! identification quizzes on algae, anemone, echinoderms, barnacles, limpets, and much more, we packed into vans and headed to Little Harbor, where we put our skills to the test and waded into the icy waters to find some intertidal critters! Along the way, we saw some bison chilling by the side of the road and drinking water. At Little Harbor, we spotted some whelks and three-winged miraxes, let hermit crabs crawl over our hands, observed many species of algae, including golden rockweed, Turkish Towel, and surf grass, and saw many barnacles and limpets! All of that intertidal observation made us hungry, so we picked up some giant kelp pneumatocysts for a quick snack with a strong salty ocean flavor and just a hint of sand for some additional texture. But the pneumatocysts were only the appetizer for a delicious dinner of hot dogs, chips, and s’mores! We had some pretty heated debates over the optimal roasting technique for a hot dog, juju-ed on that beat and cartwheeled across the grass, and constructed double-decker s’mores. Then we drove to Shark Harbor to watch the sun set. We squished in between wooden posts along a rope fence in groups of three and belted out songs from Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” to Hannah Montana’s “Party in the USA.” The karaoke continued on the car ride all the way back to the Wrigley Center where we promptly crashed in our beds and practiced the “logging” technique of dolphins as we rested and recharged for another full and exciting day!
