Packed houseDespite the poor economy, rivalry game brought out a big crowd at North SurryBy Eric LuskEditor

I got to North Surry High School about 6:45 p.m. Friday night, but I was already too late.

The parking spaces in the main school lots had already filled, and the lines of traffic going both ways on Highway 89 were already scout-ing out alternate places to park.

I didn’t mind the extra walking, though. Nor did I mind wading through the sea of people that filled up both sides of Charles Atkins Stadium for Friday’s North Surry-Mount Airy football showdown.

After watching games in too many half-filled stadiums (or in some cases barely filled stadiums) the past few seasonsd, it was re-freshing to see a standing-room only crowd on a Friday night. And a game befitting of a standing room only crowd.

North Surry athletic director

Shane Slate said he thought be-tween 4,000 and 5,000 fans filed into the stadium Friday. He said those were normal numbers for a North Surry-Mount Airy head-to-head meeting.

It’s just too bad we can’t see these types of crowds all around the area every week. Yes, the economy is tough. And yes, the cost of taking a family to a game continues to rise. But this is one local investment that is hard to top – a night of entertain-ment provided by hard-working kids and coaches that also serves as a classroom for us all on the virtues of hard work, teamwork, ingenuity, motivation, going the extra mile and overcoming adversity.

Plus, it’s just a whole lot of fun to be there, even if you have to walk a good distance from your car to get to the stadium.

1One of the area’s four unbeaten teams lost the ‘undefeated’ moni-

ker. North Surry had the first ‘L’ pinned on its record by familiar nemesis Mount Airy, 53-33. Friday marked the fifth year in a row that the Bears have beaten the Greyhounds. But this was probably the first year in that stretch where many labeled North Surry the favorite going in.

2West Stokes is now in the driv-er’s seat in the Northwest 1A/2A

Conference championship race. The Wildcats own a 4-0 league record af-ter their commanding win over North Stokes -- and hold the tiebreaker edge against Mount Airy should it ever come to that. The preseason league favorites, who have never won a conference title in football, finish the season at South Stokes (Oct. 14), at home against Bish-op McGuinness (Oct. 21) and at North Surry (Oct. 28).

3North Surry had won eight home games in a row until falling to the

Bears – all six games during the 2010 season and the first two home out-ings this year. The Greyhounds last win over Mount Airy was a 27-26 decision in 2006, played in the friendly confines of Charles Atkins Stadium. North Surry will have to wait two weeks to try and get that winning feeling back for the home fans, visiting Surry Central this coming Friday.

4North Surry-Mount Airy gets the high attendance award for the sea-

son, at least so far. It was truly standing room only on both sides of the field and in the end zone nearest the field house

by 7 p.m.. North Surry AD Shane Slate estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people in at-tendance. It’s a huge rivalry any year. But this year, both teams came into the contest riding winning streaks and own-ing solid records.

5West Wilkes earned another mea-sure of respect with its showing

against undefeated Starmount (33-17 loss). Yes, the Blackhawks had been rid-ing a four-game win streak coming into the game, with the previous three con-tests being shutouts. But each of those four victories came against foes with losing records (including one that was

winless for the first half of the year). How would they fare against the upper echelon of the conference? Friday pro-vided a solid answer. West Wilkes held its own, leading 10-6 at the half and trailing only 13-10 after three periods. The Blackhawks could be a force in the 1A playoffs in November.

6Starmount likely gained a lot from Friday’s game as well. The Rams

have been breezing through regular sea-son competition most of the last couple of years. But routs against overmatched competition don’t provide much in the way of battle-testing a team for the play-

Week Eight In Review

First & 10Ten things to take away from week eight of the football season

offs. Friday should help in that depart-ment. West Wilkes showed once again that it one of the more physical teams in the conference.

7 There are no more winless teams in our area, at long last. Elkin finally

erased the goose egg from its win col-umn with a 21-14 triumph at North Wil-kes, spoiling the Vikings homecoming. The Elks likely could lock a state playoff berth in 1A with a win this week against Alleghany.

8When Wilkes Central beat West Iredell 55-48 in a wild shootout of

a game in week two, we praised the Eagles’ explosive offense on these very pages but questioned whether or not we should be alarmed that the defense gave up so many points and yards. All Wilkes Central has done in the five games since then is outscore opponents 205-8. There have been four shutouts (West Wilkes, North Wilkes, East Wilkes and Forbush). The one blemish came when the Eagles gave up a touchdown and two-point conversion in the fourth quarter of a 53-8 romp over Alleghany. For the season, Central has outscored its foes 308-63. The defense is just fine (better than fine, actually).

9Injuries could play a key role for Mount Airy coming down the

stretch of the season. There were sev-eral banged up Bears on the sidelines late during Friday’s game.

10Sometimes numbers tell the sto-ry of a game — and sometimes

they don’t. If you look at total yardage stats from Friday’s East Surry-South Stokes game, you’d think the Sauras won by a couple of touchdowns at least. East Surry managed just 166 yards in all, while South Stokes went over 300. Yet, the Cardinals won the 21-13. The biggest stat of the night – East Surry picked off four passes and forced seven turnovers in all. The Cardinals, who lost their first five games, have now won two in a row.

Better than a ‘solid’ teamMount Airy shows ‘wow’ power in beating rival ’HoundsBy Eric LuskEditor

We’re not spectacular like they are, that’s for sure. But we’re pretty solid. We just hope our solid is good enough.

That was how Mount Airy coach Kelly Holder concluded an interview on his team’s next opponent, North Surry, during the middle of last week.

Holder’s Bears, though, played the role of spectacular on Friday night, dishing out a 53-33 licking that ended North Surry’s lengthy home winning streak and handed the ’Hounds their first defeat of the season.

Quarterback Austin Taylor proved spectacular running and throwing the ball, completing TD passes of 23, 49, 61 and 67 yards and rushing for scores of 1 and 24 yards. Ty Simmons had some spectacular runs, especially after getting into the open field. Kas-hous Martin, despite turning an ankle early in the game, also had a few spectacular rushes, including a 52-yard touchdown sprint in the third pe-riod that stole “Uncle Mo” back from North Surry less than a minute after the ’Hounds had scored to pull within 4 points.

Holder and his staff showed spec-tacular play-calling ability, exploiting weaknesses in the North Surry sec-ondary multiple times and seemingly knowing just what to run to counter North Surry scores.

Friday’s result – the most points the Granite Bears have scored since beating South Stokes 52-0 last Octo-ber -- gets Mount Airy back into the conference championship picture, though the Bears will need some help

to catch West Stokes for the top spot. The result also should dispel the no-tion that Mount Airy, despite losing a bundle of talent to graduation the past few years, is merely just a solid foot-ball team, lacking in the spectacular.

“Everybody says that they are not as good as they have been,” North Surry coach Brian Hampton said the day before the game. “I don’t know what they are seeing. As usual, they are very well coached and very ath-letic.”

150 wins and countingKelly Holder beats his old school for milestone victoryBy Eric LuskEditor

Mount Airy’s 53-33 win at North Surry on Friday gave their head coach his 150th career victory.

Kelly Holder improved to 127-43 as Mount Airy’s head man. Holder, who has been with the program a dozen years, compiled a 23-24 record during four seasons at Surry Central before moving to the Granite City in the late 1990s.

Holder graduated from North Surry and quarterbacked the Greyhounds before starting at Elon College. He is now 10-3 all-time against his old school, including wins in the last five meetings. North Surry last beat Mount Airy in 2006. The other two losses came in Holder’s first two seasons.

According to Mount Airy football historian Doug McDaniel, Holder has the third most number of wins of any Granite Bears football coach and the second-best winning percentage (74.7) in school history.

Friday marked the 30th time a Holder-coached team has scored 50 or more points. It also extended a streak to nine consecutive years of scoring 50 points in at least one game.

Other facts about Holder, according to McDaniel’s records:

* Holder has guided the Granite Bears to post season play in each of his 12 seasons.

* The Bears have recorded at least one shutout for 9 years in a row. Dur-ing Holder’s tenure the Bears have never been shutout. The streak of consecutive games without a shutout now stands at 181 (tied with Charlotte Independence with second most in

North Carolina to Reidsville’s 197).* The Bears are averaging 31 points

per game since Holder arrived in 1999. During Holder’s 12 seasons, the Bears have scored 70 or more points on three occasions and 60 or more on nine oc-casions.

* Holder has an overall 19-11 play-off record, but is 10-2 over the last three years (with a state title in 2008

and an appearance in the title game in 2009). He’s 12-3 in playoff action over the last four years and 15-4 over the last five years.

* Mount Airy is 59-7 under Holder since 2007.

Holder will go for win No. 151 on Friday when the Granite Bears host Bishop McGuinness.

Jacob Pelfrey ranked among top WRs

Heading into Friday’s game against Mount Airy, North Surry senior wide receiver Jacob Pelfrey led the state – all classifications – in touchdown recep-tions.

Through week seven, Pelfrey had caught 16 TD passes – four more than any other player in North Carolina, ac-cording to a weekly stat leaders post on NCPreps.com.

Pelfrey added to his tally against Mount Airy, hauling in three more touch-down receptions from Alex Ratcliff, who is also ranked among the state’s top quar-terbacks.

Amazingly, this is Pelfrey’s first year of playing high school football, coach Brian Hampton said.

“He came out over the summer, and he looked good,” Hampton said. “But you never know until the pads go on. In his first game, he caught two balls – for two touchdowns. It sort of just kept going from there. He just makes plays.”

Pelfrey’s first TD on Friday covered 34 yards and pulled North Surry to within 7-6 in the opening period. Pelfrey caught a 31-yard scoring strike from Ratcliff in the third period and snagged a 13-yard pass for a score in the fourth quarter.

“There is some sort of chemistry there with him and Alex that is special right now,” Hampton said.

Eagles complete Wilkes shutout streak

It’s not really breaking news that Wilkes Central won the “county cham-pionship” again this season — the Ea-gles have swept their Wilkes neighbors every year since 2007.

This year, though, Central not only beat its three closest rivals, they shut each of them out. Coach Jeremy Fun-derburk’s team completed the shutout sweep Friday night with a 35-0 victory against East Wilkes. Central also beat West Wilkes 34-0 and North Wilkes 48-0 earlier in the year.

The Eagles have won 17 straight county rivalry games, with the average margin of victory better than 31 points per game. The last time the team lost in county came in 2006 when West Wil-kes knocked them off early in the sea-son, 21-14.

Visit from former state champ inspires Elks

Prior to Elkin’s game Friday night against North Wilkes, and following an uncharacteristic 0-6 start to the season, the Elks and coach Scott Wood were searching for answers and a turnaround.

Wood looked within and the result was a much-needed win.

Leonard Jordan, a former offensive lineman for the Elks from 2003-06 and owner of three state 1A title rings, was asked to address the team at practice

during the week. He delivered.“I felt like we were lacking fire and

intensity,” said Wood, whose team had averaged just 7 points a game through the first six weeks of the season. “I had (Jordan) come in and talk with the team.

“I figured they were probably tired of hearing me all the time, and I just wanted to do something for us to get better.”

The result was two 100-yard rushers — Nick Phillips (117) and Seth Creed (116) — and victory.

Phillips ran for a touchdown and caught the game-winning touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Josh Strickland late in the second quarter.

“It motivated us,” said Phillips fol-lowing Friday night’s win. “He talked a lot to the linemen, told them what to do and they picked up well on it.

“The linemen played exception-ally. We were all kind of hyped.”

Stronger play up front helped Phillips use his speed on pitches to the outside, and Creed to pound the ball up the middle.

“Seth ran pretty well up the mid-dle, and then we were able to open that up to the outside,” said Phillips.

Eagles move up one spot in AP rankings, Bears stay at No. 9

Wilkes Central’s football team moved up from 10th place to ninth place in the latest Associated Press statewide rankings for Class 2A, re-leased last week.

The Eagles are the only area team listed in the 2A rankings. Lincolnton leads the list, followed by South Ire-dell, High Point Andrews, Tarboro and East Duplin.

Wallace-Rose Hill and Albemarle continue to top the Class 1A rank-ings. Mount Airy remained at No. 9 in the 1A poll and may move up

a slot or two following this week’s impressive win against North Surry.

Swain County, which is third in Class 1A, received one first-place vote. Wallace Rose-Hill has won the last two “small 1A” championships.

Vikings, Rams lead the way in the MVAC for JV football

North Wilkes and Starmount have emerged as the top junior varsity football teams in the Mountain Val-ley 1A/2A Conference this season.

North Wilkes improved to 6-0 overall with a 24-6 win against El-kin on Thursday. Starmount moved to 6-1 by beating West Wilkes 60-0. Starmount’s lone loss came to East Surry in a weather-shortened game early in the season.

The two JV powers collide this Thursday in Boonville. Starmount is the reigning JV champion in the MVAC.

BOONVILLE – When you’re the top gunslinger in the conference, every oppo-nent is going to be gunning for you, trying to knock the king of the mountain off its perch with a lucky shot when its back is turned.

Such was the case Friday night when a feisty West Wilkes team gave Moun-tain Valley 1A/2A Conference top dog Starmount a scare for two quarters before finally succumbing to a huge reversal of fortunes in the second half. The Rams finally sent the upset bug packing with a closer-than-the-score-indicated, 33-17 win.

In a contest that turned out to be a clas-sic tale of two halves, the Blackhawks threw a few new looks offensively at the Rams, which resulted in a huge advantage in controlling the line of scrimmage and a surprising 10-7 edge at halftime.

“I thought we came out and played a really good first half and did a whole lot of things well,” West coach Scott Hallock said. “But they came out in the second half with a few more blitzes and a whole dif-ferent look and took control of the line.”

Rams boss Scott Johnson said he ex-pected that West Wilkes would try some-thing new to throw off his defense.

“It’s really something we’ve got-ten used to,” he said. “Every week they (Starmount’s opponents) come out with something new against us and have some success. It always takes us a little while to adjust.”

As Johnson’s scribbled up play chart after the game indicated.

And adjust Starmount did. The Rams dominated on both sides of the ball in the second half – and the team that once was (in the first half) wasn’t anymore.

How dominant were the Rams in the second half? The numbers tell the story.

On offense, after picking away for just 124 yards and one TD in the first half,

Starmount stepped it up a few gears in putting up 26 points and nearly doubling its first half numbers. In the third quarter alone, the Rams accounted for 133 yards of offense and six first downs, compared to its 124 yards and 1 first down in the whole first half.

But it was the defense that made the biggest difference in this night’s big turn-around. Sparked by several big adjust-ments, including a few different blitzing schemes, the Rams stymied West to a mere 28 total second half yards and three first downs. As well, they forced Black-hawks’ quarterback Seth Absher into two interceptions, killing potential drives.

Despite all that, West Wilkes was still hanging tough midway through the fourth quarter, down by just a 20-17 count. That is, however, when the Rams pulled off the biggest coup of the evening. On a fourth

and 12 on the West Wilkes’ 44, Starmount faked a punt and snapped the ball to quar-terback Christian Hurt, who bolted down the right sideline for 22 crucial yards. Three plays later Hurt took it in from 11 yards out to put his team up 26-17.

“Yeah, that fake punt really hurt us,” Hallock said.

The defense went wild from there, as a Dillon Bray interception on West’s en-suing drive set up the offense in superior field position. And three plays later, Chas-tin Martin jetted 23 yards down the right sideline to help put the game out of reach, at 33-17 with 3:47 remaining.

Any thoughts the Blackhawks had at mounting a comeback on the ensuing drive were quickly dashed by the resur-gent Rams defense, as consecutive sacks by Zach Worley left West’s collective heads hanging just a little bit more.

Hallock was optimistic despite the sec-ond half upheaval.

“Hey, our kids got the opportunity to play some pretty tough competition to-night and I think we did a lot of things well,” he said. “We’re getting better each week with this new offense and tonight was just a learning experience along the way.”

The Blackhawks (5-3, 2-4), who have a bye next week, are still undefeated in 1A and have just two games left, with North Wilkes and Alleghany. If they can man-age wins in those two contests, a number one 1A seed out of the conference and a home playoff game will be assured.

Johnson, too, said the game was a learning experience.

“I think this might help us down the road when we get into a close ball game and have to step it up,” he said. “What I like about this team is their confidence. I asked them before they came out in the second half if there was anybody who felt that they couldn’t win this game. We nev-er panicked, and that was the key.”

Week Eight Game Coverage

By Christopher NobleContributing Writer

After 329 days without a victory, the streak is over.

The Elkin football team rode the one-two punch of Nick Phillips and Seth Creed, and its defense pitched a second-half shutout to beat North Wilkes 21-14 on Friday night in Hays.

The win, Elkin’s first since a 59-19 rout of Cherokee in the first round of last season’s state 1A playoffs, improved the Elks to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in Mountain Valley 1A/2A play. North Wilkes dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-6 in league action.

Phillips ran the ball 11 times for 117 yards and a touchdown, while Creed rushed 21 times for 116 yards and a score.

After a high-scoring first half, when both teams put up all of their points, the game settled into a field-position battle throughout the entirety of the second.

The game hinged on a late drive by the Vikings, who got the ball with 54 seconds left.

Following consecutive passes from Vikings quarterback Andrew Ayers to Ryan Walsh, which moved North nearly 25 yards in less than 20 seconds, its of-fense sputtered. Ayers was eventually sacked by Elkin’s Mason Timmerman as time rolled off the clock to ensure the Elks their first win of the season.

“It feels good when you’ve been through what we’ve been through,” said Elkin coach Scott Wood. “We talked to the boys at halftime and told them not to let (North) score in the second, because in the first, they ran all over us.”

The Vikings came out running and gunning, from the very first play of the game.

Ayers hit Walsh down the left side for a pickup of 35 yards to get the game start-ed. North’s Matthew Shepherd broke off a run of 25 yards, before Ayers hit Pruitt

again to get the Vikings to the goal line.Just a shade over two minutes into

the game, the Vikings capped a five-play drive when Ayers ran the quarterback sneak to put North up 7-0.

Then, Elkin put together a 14-play, 80-yard drive in which the Elks fed Phillips or Creed on dives all the way down the field. Creed broke into the end zone fol-lowing the six minute drive to even the score at 7-7.

North went back to work from its own 15, through the air, as Ayers distributed the ball to four different receivers on the Vikings’ second drive. Pruitt hauled in a pass for 30 yards and Lance Byrd

snagged one for 19 before Ayers again used the sneak to get in for the score and a 14-7 lead.

Ayers didn’t throw an incompletion until three minutes before halftime and finished 13-of-16 for 168 yards and had two rushing touchdowns.

After running a dive for all of the first drive, the Elks faked a dive to Creed to start their next possession, but pitched the ball to Phillips, who bolted 77 yards down the left sideline to level the game at 14-14.

“When we were running inside, (North) was mostly slanting to the op-posite side, and we saw that,” said Phil-lips, who also caught the game-winning touchdown pass. “(North) was expecting us to come right back up the middle, and when they came down, it was a clear shot to the end zone.”

After trading possessions, Elkin got the ball back with just over two minutes left in the first half.

The Elks marched down the field, us-ing dives and pitches, before quarterback Josh Strickland rolled out of the pocket. Strickland hit Phillips as he flared out of the backfield and into the end zone for a 41-yard touchdown pass.

“Those two plays really hurt us,” said North Wilkes coach Dave Haynie. “We didn’t get the same plays that we had got in the first half, in the second half, and that’s been the story of our year.”

The Elks return home on Friday night to play host to Alleghany, while North prepares for a visit from unbeaten Star-mount.

PILOT MOUNTAIN – R.J. Lawson stood outside the East Surry locker room Friday night just soaking in the breezy Homecoming air.

“We actually got our confidence up,” the Cardinal junior defensive back said. “During the week, coach said he thought we had that confidence back.”

Pity South Stokes. East Surry created seven turnovers on defense – led by three interceptions from Lawson – and the Cardinals toppled the Sauras, 21-13, in a Northwest 1A/2A Conference varsity football game.

“Same story every week,” South Stokes head coach Jonathan Frasher said. “If anyone has a recipe for not turning the ball over, please email me ... Unbelievable. Unbelievable. That’s the only word I have.”

South Stokes actually put up 306 yards of total offense, including 174 on the ground. Jacquan Martin led the rushers with 108 yards on 23 carries. The Sauras defense held the Cardinals to 160 total yards – just 33 in the second half.

But it was the East Surry defense that stole the show – and each turnover mattered.

Junior Nick Smith started the parade by picking off a South Stokes pass and returning it the Sauras’ 25-yard line. The East Surry offense needed just two plays to go up 7-0 when Cardinal QB Mason Edwards connected with Andrew Gosnell for a 24-yard score.

After ending South Stokes’ next drive with a fumble recovery, the East Surry defense put up some points of its own when Owen Hawks picked up a batted pitch and thundered 32 yards to the end zone. “It was the defensive coaching staff … I turn it all over to them,” East Surry head coach David Diamont said. “They made some really good adjustments on the sideline.”

South Stokes scored on its last possession of the first half and its first possession of

the second half to cut the gap to 14-13 – thanks to a missed extra point – before the Cardinal defense bucked up again.

A fumble recovery with 5:58 left in the third gave the East Surry offense another short field and it capitalized. Edwards and Gosnell hooked up on a 13-yard scoring pass to cap a five-play, 26-yard march.

“Our defense played its heart out,” Frasher said. “We gave up two touchdowns on a short field.”

After the last one, Homecoming Night became the “R.J. Lawson Show.”

His first pick stopped South Stokes at the East Surry 3 with 38 seconds left in the third quarter.

His second interception ended an eight-play Sauras drive at the East Surry 35 with 1:20 left in the game. His final swipe sealed the game when he pulled down a heave at the East Surry 47 with 14 seconds left.

“I was all over him for not making a tackle on one play and then he makes three picks,” Diamont said with a smile. “He

played the position like we wanted him to, like a centerfielder keeping everything in front of him.”

The INT total was Lawson’s biggest since a four interception game at West Stokes last season.

“It was just the way they (coaches) had me playing,” Lawson said. “They had me playing the quarterback instead of in my zone. I got to watch the quarterback, read his eyes and go.”

The three interception total tied Lawson with South Stokes receiver Zach Singleton as the

favorite targets of Saura quarterbacks. No other South Stokes receiver had more than two catches.

“We took momentum in (to halftime),” Frasher said. “Our kids were really confident at halftime. I told them if we hold onto the football, we have a chance to win.”

Confidence. Zero turnovers. Those wound up being on the side of the Cardinals.

TOAST — Austin Taylor’s first play under center was nearly flawless — but it was just a little sneak peek, a preview of what was to come.

Mount Airy’s diminutive quarterback floated a jump ball that his receiver, Tanner Joyce, hauled in to give the Granite Bears a touchdown lead not even two minutes into the game.

Three hours and five touchdowns later, Taylor and his teammates celebrated an impressive 53-33 road shootout against previously-unbeaten North Surry in a key Northwest 1A/2A Conference game for both teams.

The Granite Bears’ quarterback connected on 9-of-13 pass attempts for 263 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a pair of touchdowns and a two-point conversion.

Taylor had touchdown tosses of 49, 61 and 67 yards to go along with his 23-yard scoring strike in the opening minutes.

“He was pretty good tonight, all 138 pound of him,” Mount Airy coach Kelly Holder said. “He played gutty and our guys around him did their jobs.”

Both offenses were explosive in the game, piling up a combined 887 yards total offense, with Mount Airy racking up 504 in the win. The key difference in the game — turnovers. The Greyhounds’ four miscues turned into 14 Granite Bear points, both on long touchdown passes one play after the giveaway.

“We know we’re a good football team and we can play with those guys, but when you turn the ball over against that team, you’re going be in trouble,” North Surry coach Brian Hampton said. “That team is so well coached, Kelly does such a

good job with them, that you just have to not do anything to get yourself beat.

North Surry quarterback Alex Ratcliff had a big game in the loss, with a rushing touchdown with three more through the air — all to Jacob Pelfrey. Pelfrey finished the game with seven catches for 133 yards. Jason King led the Greyhounds’ ground game with 127 yards and a touchdown.

Turning point of the game — North

Surry cut the Granite Bears’ halftime lead to 24-20 after scoring a touchdown on its opening possession of the third quarter. Mount Airy was pinned on 24-yard line facing 2nd-and-21. Granite Bears’ quarterback Austin Taylor took the snap, did a high-stepping cha-cha slide for his dropback and dumped a screen pass to Ty Simmons. Simmons followed a convoy of blockers for a 24-yard gain that appeared to deflate the Greyhounds’ defense.

The Granite Bears’ scored on a long run on the next play.

“We had the crowd really into the game, the place was loud, our kids were jumping around, we hollered ‘screen’ and nobody listened to me, and they got a bunch of yards on us,” North Surry coach Brian Hampton said. “It seemed like that took a lot out of us.”

Turning point No. 2 — The Greyhounds rallied to within one score after a diving touchdown run by quarterback Alex Ratcliff in the waning minutes of the third quarter. But once again, the Granite Bears were able to keep North Surry at arms length after a 61-yard touchdown pass from Taylor to Simmons.

Simmons caught the pass about five yards from the line of scrimmage, followed the path of two crushing blockers and raced into the end zone to life the

Granite Bears lead to 39-26. The game was never closer.

It was over … about 10 seconds after the teams returned to the field for the start of the fourth quarter. The Greyhounds bit on Taylor’s play-action fake, and the Granite Bears’ signal caller dropped a pass in the arms of Gwyn for a 67-yard, backbreaking touchdown that extended the lead to 46-26.

Austin Taylor (Mount Airy): Had his best performance of the season at quarterback, completing 9-of-13 passes for 263 yards and four touchdowns. Taylor also hurt the Greyhounds with his feet, rushing for two touchdowns and a two-point conversion. The junior never came out of the game. Defensively, he was assigned to cover one of the state’s top receivers, Jacob Pelfrey. While Pelfrey scored three times, Taylor kept him in check during some vital stretches.

Ty Simmons (Mount Airy): Hit the century mark in rushing yards (100 yards on 17 carries) and hauled in a 61-yard TD pass from Taylor. He caught three passes total for 88 yards.

Kashous Martin (Mount Airy): Rushed for 64 yards on his four carries, including a back-breaking 52-yard TD run with 6:33 left in the third period that put Mount Airy back up by 11 points.

Darius Gwyn (Mount Airy): Caught two long passes for TDs from Taylor, one play covering 49 yards and the other 67. He had three catches total for 122 yards.

Alex Ratcliff (North Surry): It was tough sledding at times, but the senior quarterback still managed to throw three touchdown passes and rush for another score. Ratcliff finished 12-for-27 for 191 yards and one INT. He rushed for 65 yards on 20 carries.

Jason King (North Surry): Rushed for 127 yards on 22 carries, scoring a

touchdown on a 2-yard run.Jacob Pelfrey (North Surry): One of

the state’s most prolific receivers added three more TDs to his collection, turning passes from Ratcliff into scores from 34, 31 and 13 yards. He finished with seven catches for 133 yards.

Austin Fleming (West Stokes): Accounted for 340 yards of offense in the Wildcats’ win over North Stokes. The senior quarterback completed 17-of-24 attempts for 284 yards and a TD. He also rushed for 56 yards and two more scores.

Austin Long (West Stokes): Found the end zone three times Friday night. He rushed for scores of 2 and 9 yards and caught a 15-yard TD pass from Fleming.

DeMarion Jones (West Stokes): Put the Wildcats on the board quickly, returning an interception 37 yards for a touchdown less than 90 seconds into the opening period. Jones also caught three passes for 90 yards and helped break up four other pass plays from his defensive post.

Zack Manley (West Stokes): Led the Cats defensively with 11 tackles (eight solos) and three tackles for loss.

Tyler Bullard (West Stokes): Had three of West Stokes’ 12 tackles for loss, including a pair of sacks. Bullard made eight hits in all.

Matthew Hopkins (North Stokes): Scored the Vikes’ only points against a tough West Stokes defense, catching a 12-yard TD pass from Garrett Wood. Hopkins

finished with 97 yards in receptions in all.Andrew Gosnell and Mason Edwards

(East Surry): On a night when offense was at a premium for the Cardinals, the wide receiver-quarterback duo hooked up for a pair of touchdowns. Edwards completed a 24-yard TD pass to Gosnell in the first quarter and then hit Gosnell on a 14-yard scoring play in the third period.

Owen Hawks (East Surry): Returned a South Stokes fumble 20 yards for a touchdown, providing a key second quarter score in the Cards’ 21-13 victory.

Jacquan Martin (South Stokes): Rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.

R.J. Lawson (East Surry): Picked off three passes to thwart the Sauras on Friday night. South Stokes outgained East Surry by quite a bit but Lawson and the Cards stiffened when they had to.

Christian Shinault (East Surry): Racked up 12 tackles to lead the Cardinals in hits against South Stokes.

Greg Saloman (Bishop McGuinness): Rushed for 77 yards and two touchdowns against Surry Central.

Jesse Martin (Surry Central): Rushed for a 10-yard touchdown and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Mitchell in the Eagles road win at Bishop McGuinness.

Wes Brown (Surry Central): Helped the Golden Eagles begin to break the game open at Bishop with a 55-yard touchdown run midway through the third period.

Christian Hurt (Starmount): Turned a fake punt into 22 yards and a first down in a key drive that led to points. Hurt also completed his only pass, the 59-yarder to Billips, for a touchdown. For the game, Hurt carried 13 times for a game-high 90 yards.

Bryson Mosteller (West Wilkes): Hit a 22-yard field goal and a PAT after a touchdown to help give the Blackhawks a surprising 10-0 lead on Starmount in the opening half. Mostellar also made a PAT after West Wilkes’ second TD.

Seth Absher and Tyler Woods (West Wilkes): Scored the Blackhawks’ touchdowns on rushing plays.

Nick Phillips (Elkin): Averaged better than 10 yards per carry in helping the Elks earn their first win of the season. Phillips finished with 117 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown. His 77-yard TD sprint tied the game

14-14. He later caught what would be the game-winning TD pass from Josh Strickland. That play covered 41 yards.

Seth Creed (Elkin): Rushed for 116 yards on 21 carries to give the Elks a true one-two backfield punch Friday. Creed scored one touchdown.

Mason Timmerman (Elkin): Came up with sack in the closing seconds that helped seal the Elks’ first victory of 2011.
