NOORD -- After an extensiveevaluation which includedmeetings in the barrios, sur-veys and meetings with youngpeople and focus group gather-ings in auxiliary governmentoffices, the government hasdecided to revamp most of theAuxiliary Government Offices(Hulpbestuurskantoor) andturn them into multifunctionalcenters for the community.

Today these Auxiliary Go -vernment Offices are wherecitizens meet to pay utilitybills, and receive other govern-ment services which previ-ously were available only atthe head office in the city. Ithas been observed that the aux-iliary offices in Noord, Pa-radera, Santa Cruz, Savanetaand San Nicolas are too limitedfor the large number of peoplewho use their services.

Citizens meet at these of-fices and interchange ideas andconversation; hence these of-fices are more than just placesto pay bills, etc. It is for thisreason that the idea was bornto make them multifunctionalcites. For example, when amother goes to pay utility bills, the children should be able to

On his day of release,Daniel wasted no time on ei-ther a drink, a woman or evenrevenge. Heedless of proba-tionary restrictions, he madehis way to Miami Internationaland the locker with his smallreserve of cash and a passportwith ID’s. He flew to Arubaand found an inexpensive bedand breakfast inn near theocean and within biking dis-tance of Mt. Hooiberg. On arrival, he founda gaggle of tour buses aroundthe stairway side of the hill andafter navigating through themwas stunned to find a new stair-way had been built into the hillwith resting places consistingof canopies and decks con-structed for the tourists, asAruba had become a popularvacation destination. The oldstairway structure was com-pletely gone and with it, allDaniel’s hopes and dreams. Hestood perfectly still for a verylong time as day began to turnto dusk.

Daniel turned to see a prettyblond woman, with light coffeecolored skin showing a mixeddescent, wearing a hat, and apair of Ray-Bans. She had agreen iguana draped around herneck and bare shoulders, andwore a sundress. She was lean-ing casually against a small car.

“Yes,” he answered, “I didlose my best friend.”

She studied him for a timeand commented, “Ja, you needa new best friend then.”

Her name was LisbethWaasdorp and it was not longbefore Daniel became lost inher deep blue eyes, in her fem-inine ways, her goodness, herexotic tales of Aruba and islandlife, her warmth, her laugh, herlarge and loving extended fam-ily. They were together con-

lengthy interview last yearwith Skeptico.com, a scienceand spirituality blog.

"If there is evidence andproof of an afterlife, this isprobably as good as it gets,"Catholic Online, a Web-based Roman Catholic newsservice, wrote approvingly.

By one estimate, threepercent of Americans -- morethan nine million -- have un-dergone a near-death experi-ence. Some have written uptheir stories on the website ofthe Near Death Experience

Research Foundation.Dean Mobbs, a psycholo-

gist at Columbia University inNew York who studies neuro-biology and fear in humans, did not dismiss Alexander'sexperience -- but he ques-tioned how it came about.

"I think there's no paranor-mal component to it," saidMobbs, co-author of a paperin the journal Trends in Cog-nitive Sciences identifyingnear-death experiences as"the manifestation of normalbrain functions gone awry."

"I believe our brains canconcoct vivid experiencesparticularly in situations ofconfusion and trauma," hesaid in an interview. "Thebrain is trying to reinterpretthe world and what's goingon."

Mobbs cited research inwhich, for instance, Swissneuroscientist Olaf Blankehas artificially induced anout-of-body experience bystimulating the point in thebrain where the right tempo-ral and parietal lobes meet.

He also recalled how thebody can unleash "a massivedose of opioids" in the face ofextreme danger. Opioids gen-erate feelings of euphoria likethose described by near-deathsurvivors.

Mobbs also noted thatmany people who claim tohave undergone a near-deathexperience were never, in fact, near death -- while the major-ity of those who have diedbriefly before resuscitation donot recall going anywhere.

In his Newsweek excerpt,Alexander framed his experi-ence in religious terms.

One of the few places hehas had no trouble getting hisstory across is church, where"the colors of the stained-glass windows recalled theluminous beauty of the land-scapes I'd seen in the worldabove," he wrote.

"The plain fact is that thematerialist picture of thebody and brain as the produc-ers, rather than the vehicles,of human consciousness isdoomed."

PARIS (AFP) - Scientists onSunday said they had foundwater molecules in samplesof lunar soil, and their un-usual signature points to theSun as the indirect source.

Samples returned to Earthby the Apollo missions carrymolecules of water and a pre-cursor of water called hy-droxyl, according to theirstudy, published in the jour-nal Nature Geoscience.

Researchers led by YangLiu at the University of Ten-nessee theorise that the mol-ecules developed from areaction between hydrogenions in the solar wind -- theblast of particles from theSun -- and a loose surfacesoil called regolith.

The Sun was formedaround 4.5 billion years agofrom a cloud of gas, a reac-tion in which all the deu-terium in the nebula reactedwith hydrogen to form he-lium.

As a result, unlike allother objects in the SolarSystem, the Sun is deu-terium-less. Sure enough, thesamples were tellingly poorin deuterium, the investiga-tors found.

The tests used infraredspectroscopy to get a chemi-cal signature of regolithgrains from the Apollo 11, 16and 17 missions. Two sam-ples came from plains loca-tions, and one from the lunarhighlands.

Although the moleculesare dissolved within thegrains and do not exist as liq-uid water, the findings pow-erfully boost the notion thatthe Moon is not the utterlyarid place it was once thoughtto be, say the authors.

Since 2009, when NASAfound water crystals in a deepcrater near Moon's southernpole, evidence has suggestedthat the Moon was once apretty moist place and maystill have frozen water atdepth.

Until now, the source ofwater in the inner Solar Sys-tem, the region extending tothe asteroid belt betweenMars and Jupiter, is believedto be comets and other water-rich rocks which whack intoplanets and other bodies.

So if the study is right, hy-drogen from the solar windcould be a second, hithertounimagined source.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) -Actor-director Ben Affleck'slatest movie tells the incredi-ble story of Hollywood's rolein an attempt to get a groupof US diplomats out of Iranduring the 1979 hostage cri-sis.

"Argo," Affleck's thirdfilm behind the camera, is setagainst the backdrop of theIranian revolution and the in-ternational standoff in which52 Americans were held inTehran for more than a year.

The subject matter hasclear topical resonance: thehostage crisis helped ejectJimmy Carter from the WhiteHouse, and President BarackObama, battling for re-elec-tion, is now facing pressureover attacks on US missionsabroad.

But the 40-year-old Holly-wood star says it was neverhis intention for the film --produced by George Clooneyand out this weekend inNorth America, less than fourweeks before the November6 election -- to be caught up

in politics."It was always important

to us to let the movie not bepoliticized. We tried to makeit very factual, fact-based, be-cause it was coming up be-fore the election in the US,when a lot of things getpoliticized," he said.

The real-life story --which was classified foryears, and only became pub-lic in 1997 -- starts with theUS embassy in Tehran beingseized by revolutionaries, who went on to hold 52Americans hostage for 444days.

The Democratic Carter'smishandling of the crisis ledto his defeat by RepublicanRonald Reagan the followingyear.

As the mission wasstormed, a handful of diplo-mats managed to escapethrough a secret exit and tookrefuge in the Canadian em-bassy. They were out of Iran-ian hands, but the nextquestion was how to get themout of the country.

Central IntelligenceAgency (CIA) officer TonyMendez proposed a solution, which at first seemed far-fetched, but was eventuallyaccepted.

The idea was to mount afictitious Hollywood sciencefiction movie production, askTehran for visas to scout forfilming locations -- and then

get the diplomats out of thecountry disguised as filmcrew members.

"When I saw the script, Icouldn't believe how good itwas," Affleck told reporters, presenting the movie in Bev-erly Hills ahead of its release.

"What struck me almostright away was that we hadthis thriller, and in equal meas-ure this kind of comic Holly-wood satire and this really sortof intricate real-life CIA spystory, all based on truth."

Affleck plays Mendez, areal-life former spy who washeavily involved in themovie's production and evenmakes a brief appearance onscreen.

"It was really inspiring tomeet Tony. He was steeped inthis movie. It was Tony'sstory, Tony's point of view,"said Affleck.

Derek Jeter's fractured leftankle cast a pall over twoclubhouses following a drain-ing Game 1 in the AmericanLeague Championship Serieson Saturday night at YankeeStadium.

The Tigers prevailed, 6-4,in 12 innings to gain theupper hand, but there was amuted tone to their clubhousein the afterglow.

Out of respect for Jeter, ar-guably the most popular guywithin the players' fraternity, there was little of the upbeattalk of momentum gainedheading into Game 2.

"You don't want to see thecaptain going down like that,"said Tigers first basemanPrince Fielder. "Not only is hea great player -- he's a greatguy, down to earth and hum-ble. He forces us all to playthe game the way he does, running out ground balls hardevery time. He's Derek Jeter. He's the man."

Jeter, the seemingly in-domitable Yankees captain, needed assistance getting offthe field after collapsing tothe infield dirt in the game-turning 12th inning. Hefielded a ground ball byJhonny Peralta before losinghis balance and tumbling tothe ground.

Elevated for 17 years byJeter's greatness, the Yankees

have to soldieron, trying to ig-nore the severityof the loss.

"It's terrible,"Andy Pettitte said,"but we've got aseries to play, andsomebody's goingto have to take hisspot."

Jayson Nixassumed theshortstop posi-tion, but nobody,

realistically, replaces Jeter.Pettitte sensed it was seri-

ous as Jeter writhed in pain inthe dirt and was not surprisedto learn the ankle was frac-tured.

"For him to lay down onthat field, I knew somethingwas broke or torn," Pettittesaid. When he didn't get up, Iknew he was done, that hewasn't going to be able toplay in the series. It's a badloss -- the captain. Guys havegot to move forward andplay."

Jeter tried to jump-startthe offense with a leadoffwalk in the first and a singlein the second, the 200th post-season hit of his career. TheNo. 2 man on the list, BernieWilliams, retired with 128postseason hits.

Girardi didn't want tomake light of Jeter's injurybut said it could be a chancefor someone else to step inand show what they can do.

"Anyone would admit wehave a better chance withJeter but sometimes oneman's injury is another man'sopportunity," Girardi said."Someone has to do wellwith this opportunity. Wehave to move on. We are try-ing to win a series here."

Jeter's injury could openthe door for Yankees' AlexRodriguez who hasn't seenmuch action in the postsea-son.

Manager Girardi used apinch hitter for three-time AL

MVP Rodriguez ingames three and four ofthe first round series andbenched him in favour ofEric Chavez in the cru-cial fifth game.

Winning Game 1 is anice start, but the Tigersaren't taking anything forgranted.

"It was important tocome back after we letthe lead get away, but weknow it's not going to beeasy" said leadoff cata-lyst Austin Jackson, whotripled, doubled andmade a sensational catchin center field.

In 42 previous ALCSmatchups, the team that wonGame 1 has gone on to winthe pennant 25 times, a .595winning percentage.
