When acids and bases react with each other, the H+ ions from the acid and the OH- ions from the base join together and form H2O (water). The other ions join together and form a salt molecule.
![Page 11: Monday, October 26 - Deer Valley Unified School District October 26 Today – write in your agenda Monday – finish pH ... teachers by Wed -Report cards are due to 2nd hour teachers](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051722/5aa30ab27f8b9a46238ddb34/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Acids and bases neutralize each other (this means they bring the pH closer to 7) . For example, if you mixed an acid with a pH near 5 with a base with a pH near 9, they would end up with a pH near 7.

Procedure: Person A gets flask, beaker, baking soda & vinegar, B rinses out flask and beaker and puts them back, C gets goggles for everyone at table, D puts goggles back & wipes them
Everyone at your table must wear goggles for this activity. When you are done, wipe them and put them back into the box. Add to your observation log (page 8): Vinegar + baking soda 1. Get a flask and fill it with 75mL of water. 2. Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to the water and mix it up. 3. Pour half of your cabbage juice into the flask. Record your results. 4. Get a beaker and fill it with 75mL of vinegar. 5. Pour the other half of your cabbage juice into the vinegar. Record your results on your observation log. 6. Slowly pour the vinegar into the flask that has the baking soda
solution. Record your results on your observation log. 7. Rinse these out and put them back.

Questions to discuss: Answer on the back of page 7
1. What did the color of the cabbage juice tell you about the pH of the vinegar and baking soda?
2. What did the color change when you combined them tell you about the pH of the new solution?
3. Was this a physical or a chemical change? What evidence supports your answer?

Steel wool (+vinegar) + air
1. Place the steel wool in the vinegar for one minute. 2. While the wool is in the vinegar, get a beaker and a thermometer. Put the thermometer in the beaker and record the initial temperature. 3. Get the steel wool out. The vinegar has removed a protective coating and now iron is exposed. Dry it off. 4. Put the steel wool into the beaker and wrap it around the thermometer. 5. Cover it with aluminum foil. 6. Record the temperature and any observations after 10 minutes.

A new compound is formed by the combination of simpler reactants
A reactant breaks down into simpler products
One reactant is always oxygen and another often contains carbon and hydrogen – forms CO2 and H20
N2 + 02 -> 2NO2
2H2O -> 2H2 + O2
CH4 + 2O2 -> CO2 + 2H2O
