Warm Up-
Read Over Parent Letter. Questions? Due back Friday September 19
Students will be able to design an experiment
using provided materials.
Objective
Try your best Turn over when done Read when done
Safety Quiz Retake
By yourself, you are going to design an
experiment You may use some or all of the materials
provided You will record your details on the sheet
provided Do the best that you can
“Exploring Materials”
Lisa Simpson Problem
Use your vocab Try your best Will be checked Will go over tomorrow

X Period
Tuesday September 16,
2014Warm Up-
Did you like designing your own experiment yesterday? Explain your answer.
“Yes, I did like designing my own experiment because…”“No, I did not like designing my own experiment because…”
What did you find difficult? Why?
Students will be able to describe what they
know about scientific method and identify the controls and variables in a given problem.
Objective
Cut out the words and definitions Match the word to the correct definition Raise your hand to be checked Once checked, glue the matching
word and definition into your notebook
Scientific Method Vocab Review
Variable- An unknown; a part of the experiment that changes
Constant- A part of the experiment that does not change
Control-The part of the experiment that the independent variable is left out- the one thing you are testing for is not included; used to compare the
results; may be part of the test or may be from research
Independent Variable- Change that occurs in an experiment that is directly caused by the experimenter
Dependent Variable- May be part of the test or from research; change that occurs due to the independent variable
Hypothesis- An educated guess from research to try to answer the problem or question given; testable
Problem- A question to be answered

Warm Up-
Distinguish between an independent variable and a dependent variable. Give
an example.
Students will be able to differentiate between
independent and dependent variables, and use them to write a hypothesis.
Objective
Control- untreated hair Independent Variable- Rogooti hair product Dependent Variable- the speed of hair growth Problem- Does Rogooti affect the speed of hair
growth? Hypothesis- If Rogooti affects the speed of hair
growth, then the treated hair will grow faster because the hair product will promote hair growth.
Lisa Simpson Homework
Control- Group B Independent Variable- New Sauce Dependent Variable- Amount of Gas Conclusion- the new sauce appears to work Why do you think 8 people in group b reported
feeling better? Placebo Effect
Patty Power Homework
Controls and Variables
Thursday September 18,
2014
Warm Up-
What do you think is a control group? What do you think is an experimental group? Give an
example for each
Students will be able to differentiate between
independent and dependent variables, and use them to write a hypothesis.
Objective
Control- what you are testing against to see if
what you are testing will work; independent variable is left out
Independent variable- what you are testing; the change you are making in the experiment
Dependent variable- DEPENDS on the independent variable; what you are measuring
Reminder
Always in the form of a question
Includes the independent and dependent variables
Does _________________ (independent variable) affect ____________________ (dependent variable)?
Writing a Problem
Included the independent variable and the
dependent variable
If ________________ (independent variable) affects _______________ (dependent variable), then _____________ (what you think will happen) because _______________________________ (explanation).
Writing a Hypothesis
Read the scenario
Identify Control Constants Independent variable Dependent variable Experimental groups
Write the problem for the scenario
Come up with a hypothesis for the scenario
Gathering information from
Scenarios
2 Scientific Method Problems
Homework
Friday September 19, 2014
Warm Up-Write a problem and form a hypothesis for the
situation.
Naomi thinks she came up with a special ingredient to make gum last longer. She has asked 10 of her friends to help her out. She gives 5 people the old gum and 5
people the new gum.
Students will be able to differentiate between
independent and dependent variables, and use them to form a hypothesis.
Objective
Marshmallow Muscles
Control- Spongebob Independent Variable- Muscle Cream Dependent Variable- amount of marshmallows lifted Conclusion- claim is not supported
Microwave Miracle Hypothesis- If the microwaved food affects the time it takes the fish to
complete the maze, then the fish will complete the maze quicker because they are now smarter.
Control- fish that ate the regular food Independent variable- microwaved food Dependent variable- time it takes to complete the maze Conclusion- special food does not appear to work or make the fish
smarter
