Important Info

TRANSPORTATION: Transportation is NOT provided. Students must be picked up or take the

city bus home. Students are also responsible for transportation to and from classes that meet

off site (Fashion Club and Study Buddies). All off-site classes will meet in the lunch room before

leaving. Bus tokens are available if needed.

CLASS SPACE AND WAITLISTS: The following classes have limited space: Skateboard Art, Cooking Club, and Fashion Club. Students are given a spot on a first-come, first-served basis. If students miss 3 more of these classes, their space will be given to another student from the waitlist. FIELD TRIPS / ADDITIONAL PAPERWORK: Some classes will require additional paperwork for field trips and other off-site opportunities. Students must have these signed by a parent/guardian and returned before the specific event. Please visit the FAIR + office for extra copies or more info.

WHAT’S YOUR FLAVOR?

FAIR COOKING CLUB Mondays – 3:30-5pm

Explore food from different cultures as you learn different cooking techniques and create your own recipes. This

class may also visit local restaurants and nearby farmers’ markets.

GAME CLUB Mondays – 3:30-5pm

Hang out and compete against your friends in your favorite games. Magic the Gathering, chess, Super Smash Bros tournament and more! This class may also visit local game shops and participate in gaming competitions.

GREEN TEAM

FAIR ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB Mondays – 3:30-5pm

Do you care about recycling, climate change, and sustainability? Discuss these, and other important environmental

issues, as you find ways to create change within the FAIR and downtown communities.

WEIGHT LIFITING / FITNESS Mondays / Wednesdays – 3:30-5pm

Get access to all of the weightlifting and fitness equipment that the Downtown YMCA has to offer. The class will

meet in the lunchroom at FAIR and walk to the Downtown YMCA as a group.

STUDY BUDDIES: TUTOTRING ELEMENTARY STUDENTS Tuesdays – 3:30-5:30pm

Earn high school credit, develop job skills, and have fun with kids! Study Buddies is a NEW program where you will

tutor/mentor 3rd-5th graders at Jefferson School. Help with homework, read, and play games with elementary students.

Class will meet in lunchroom at FAIR and travel to Jefferson as a group.

GSA (GENDER SEXUALITY ALLIANCE) Tuesdays – 3:30-5pm

This is a safe space for students to get together to talk, engage in activism, and educate each other and the greater FAIR community on LGBTQ+ issues. All are welcome here.

OPEN GYM Tuesdays / Thursdays – 3:30-5pm

Get access to the Downtown YMCA gym space as you challenge your friends to a game of basketball and other gym

games. The class meets at FAIR and walks to the Downtown YMCA as a group.

FAIR MUSICAL THEATER CABARET Tuesdays / Thursdays – 3:30-5pm

Join us for this singing, dancing, and acting extravaganza! Students will select songs and scenes from musical

theater classics to highlight their greatest skills. From solos to duets to group numbers, you’ll have the opportunity

to work with musical theater professionals from around the Twin Cities. Final performances Jan. 17th and 18th

COMBO BAND

Wednesdays – 3:30-5pm Learn how to play any instrument as you cover your favorite songs and write your own material. Rock, pop, hip hop, nothing is off limits! You will work with professional musicians and have the opportunity to perform around the city.

SKATEBOARD ART Wednesdays – 3:30-5pm

Design and create your own works of art on skateboards! Refine your artistic skills and to learn how to advocate for

yourself as an artist. Skateboards will be featured in a public art exhibit around Minneapolis.

FASHION CLUB

Wednesdays – 3:30-5pm Learn hands on fashion skills as you design and create your own bags, shirts, pants, and more! This class will meet in the lunchroom at FAIR and travel as a group to Pillsbury House Theater located at: 3501 Chicago Ave Minneapolis, MN 5507

STUDENT COUNCIL Thursdays – 3:30-5pm

Make your voice heard! Help plan school outings such as dances and community events. Be a part of a core group of

students that work alongside teachers and administrators to create positive change within the school.

PODCASTING 101 Thursdays – 3:30-5pm

Learn the basics of podcasting with local radio station KRSM. Practice recording, editing, conducting an interview,

crafting a story, and more. Final products will be featured on the radio!

ELT (EXTENDED LEARNING TIME)

Mondays - Thursdays – 3:30-5pm Stay on top of your academics as you work on homework, complete missing assignments, or study for upcoming tests. School staff and college tutors will be available to help anyone who needs it.

Minneapolis Community Education Youth Enrichment Program Policies

Health and Medical

School Health Services are not available during Before or After school. Parents/guardians are responsible for notifying the before/after

school site coordinator for any special needs or medical conditions that impact their child’s health, well-being, or involvement in

activities. If your child may need to receive either prescribed or over-the counter medications while attending before/after school

programming, you must complete an authorization form before medication can be dispensed. Medication must be in the original

packaging or prescription bottle. All medication will be securely stored on-site.

Student Behavior

In order to promote a safe and engaging environment, Community Education, Youth Enrichment, a program of Minneapolis Public

Schools, conforms to the established behavior policies of the school site and the Minneapolis Public Schools Behavior Standards and

Code of Conduct (P5200). If an incident does occur, Community Education staff will notify and work with families to develop reasonable

next steps for the safety of all students and staff. This may include suspension or removal from the program without a refund. If a

student is suspended from the school day it is also a suspension from Community Education Youth Enrichment.

After School Activities Cancellation

In the event of inclement or severe weather, the district will decide whether to cancel after school programs. In the event of

cancellations, your child’s school will contact families and notice will be posted on mpls.k12.mn.us.

*When after school classes are cancelled your child will be sent home on their end of school day bus.

Photo and Media Release

I give permission for my child to be included in video or still photographs representing Minneapolis Community Education Youth

Enrichment. Photos/images may appear in newsletters, promotional brochures, and program websites.

Walking Field Trips

I understand that WALKING field trips within one mile of school grounds are a part of participating in Community Education programs.

Necessary precautions and supervision will be provided.

Data and Survey Release

Certain data will be collected from and about participants in Community Education Programs Youth Enrichment. All data is

considered private and confidential information. The intent is for Community Education, Youth Enrichment to evaluate program

effectiveness and quality.

I give permission for my child to participate in informational surveys regarding the services provided by Minneapolis Community

Education Youth Enrichment. All findings will be combined and reported group level. This could include the SAYO, class

evaluations, focus groups, and teacher surveys.

Information may be shared with Minnesota Department of Education, school district officials, community partners, and other

person or entity authorized by federal or state law.
