Publishers Notes By Raf Viniard

As January comes to a close most are ready for a hint of spring. Trappers have had a great start this year reducing our local wolf population. Ice fishing has been hit and miss because of freezing and unthawing but several fish have been pulled from our local waters.

Here at Montana Woods N Water we started the year off undergoing some exciting changes and a new direction . Even though we no longer print a hard copy the support has increased three fold in less than a month. We learn something new everyday about the digital world. This is our last issue for January and we will be bringing you at least six new exciting issues starting on 3 February.

Our writers are already thinking about and writing their next months articles. From a publishers point of view it has been so much more enjoyable having unlimited pages to work with and not being so tied down to a few pages. The covering of the wolf hunt was a prime example how we are better able to keep you informed in a more timely manner. Starting in February we are hoping to add video links to some of our content and advertising.

If you want a copy of any issue, all you have to do is download it and print it from your home computer or take it to your nearest print shop. Another option is to sign up for a digital subscription and we will send each issue right to your inbox as they are released...that is at least 72 issues a year.

Montana Woods N Water, Big Bull Sports and the Sanders County Search and Rescue will be holding its 1st Annual Camo Sweetheart Ball, 28 February. Tickets will go on sale 5 February. You can read more about this event by going to our website: www.montanawoodsnwater.com and hit the “SAR” tab for more information. We also have a large ad in this edition. Somebody is going to win a really nice gun and door prizes will be awarded. There will also be a silent auction. This is going to be a fun event. Tickets are limited, so get yours early.

Keep sending us your pictures and stories. We thank you for your continued support and we wish each and every one of you a healthy and prosperous new year.

MEMAW’S KITCHEN

Super Bowl—Game Day Snacks To some it maybe about rooting for their favorite team and moving that pigskin down the field to

the in zone and through the uprights. To me the puppy commercials are the best and of course the

food. Throw in some family and friends and it is a great day, whether my team wins or loses. Here

are a couple of my favorite Super Bowl Recipes.

Go Seattle Seahawks...because they pray!

Puppy Chow

1 package semi-sweet chocolate chips 1/4 cup peanut butter 6 cup Crispix cereal 1 cup powder sugar Melt chips in large soup pot, add peanut butter and stir in cereal. Place mixture in a large bowl and stir until coated in chocolate/peanut butter mixture and slightly cool. Place the powder sugar in a large plastic bag and pour in the cereal mixture. Close bag and shake well. Enjoy as a snack.

Game Day Velvet Fudge

3/4 pound Velveeta cheese cubed 1 cup butter 6 squares unsweetened chocolate 2 tablespoon light corn syrup 2 pounds powder sugar 1 1/2 cup pecans or walnuts 1 teaspoon vanilla Heat cheese, butter, chocolate, corn syrup over medium low heat until melted. Add powder sugar and beat with an

electric mixer until smooth, add vanilla and nuts if desired. Pour into a 9 x 13 baking pan sprayed with butter spray

and refrigerate until firm. Cut into squares and enjoy

Local Young Man Joins The USMC - by Raf Viniard

Laurin Craig Pershern aka “LP” of Trout Creek, MT flew to Marine Corp boot camp on Jan 6th 2015. Andy Pershern his father said, “We are very proud of him for going into the Marines. However I will miss him dearly, he’s been a hunting, fishing, trapping, mountain exploring partner and as good as they get. All that, coupled with him working with me in the heavy construction field has prepared him well for being a Marine.” The pictures above prove this young Montana man has been mentored well by his father and brings experience and skills to the USMC.

Word has it LP is in the “Lead” in the best platoon in the whole company. LP is an Eagle Scout, can light a fire with flint and steel in two seconds, and make a snow cave to sleep and survive winter in the mountains. According to his Dad, he has gained six pounds since joining the Marines. He also said, “The drill Instructors have left him alone and don’t know his name yet, except for Private. He says he doing very well and actually liking it, but misses Montana and the snow and wants to know how our wolfing is going.”

ICE FISHING - BULL LAKE

This last weekend, The Halfway House Bar & Grill near Troy, MT hosted their first Ice Fishing Derby. Over the course of two days, eager fisherman perused the ice-covered waters of Bull Lake in search of the perfect spot to hook a monster Northern Pike. Co-owner, Dave Cooper told me they were pleasantly surprised with the 30 registered participants. Considering the weather was overcast on Saturday and clear & sunny on Sunday, large fish were caught both days, with the most common rigging being smelt for bait on a tip up pole.

Saturday saw the hardy contestants on between 6 and 8 inches of ice, with a thin layer of water on top the ice. Hawk Powell of Troy started strong with a 13lb 5oz Northern Pike, and 11 year old, Ben McCann landed a 4lb 13oz Pike. Also, on Saturday, Tim Lindsey reeled in a beautiful almost 2lb Rainbow Trout, garnering him an honorable mention.

Sunday dawned cold and clear, having frozen the layer of water, leaving the ice as smooth as glass as more prize-winning fish were pulled from the lake.

By the end of the weekend, Powell had taken first place, Steve Munyan in second with an 8lb 4oz, fish and Dustin Irwin in third with one weighing in at 4lb 15oz, respectively. Cash prizes were awarded to the winners, ranging from $50 to $15. Also part of the Derby were numerous door prizes, enticing patrons with loot including a vacation

home rental, outdoors gear, and booze baskets.

Cooper and business partner have owned the Halfway House since last summer and are definitely planning on another ice fishing event next winter, with hopes of a summer fishing contest in 2016.

As pike are not native to Bull Lake, and only shown up over the last few years, they have given locals a new sense of excitement to hook a larger and more aggressive fish than they are used to. The Halfway House decided to embark on a new venture involving the fish and it definitely was a success.
