‘The LORD is able to give you much more than this!’ - We should never limit what God can do in our situation.

- God is able to do abundantly more than you can ask or think.

- What you may have lost is nothing compared to what He can still give you.

- We serve a Good, Good Father and He knows how to be good to His children.

PRAYER: Lord, may I never limit or doubt Your ability to restore and do wonderful things. May I live in constant expectation and confidence in You. Amen.

Jare gelede was ’n vrou nie in ’n kroeg toegelaat nie.

Jeannette Malan

Most of us like to think we’re pretty in the know of things. We can quite confidently whip out our phones and find reviews on all the possible restaurant options for the evening. We can use Google Maps to find our destinations. Heck, we can even type a few lyrics into YouTube to find that song that’s been buzzing around our head for the last three weeks. We’ve got this tech thing down.

Mostly.

But as with all things in this fast-paced age, things are constantly changing. Zuma is out, Elon Musk successfully launched his Falcon Heavy Rocket and driverless cars are set to hit the British and American markets later this year. The world is constantly changing and so no matter how tech-savvy we may be there is always something to learn. Today I hope to provide some advice for avoiding the increasingly well-known evil that is fake news, in our daily lives. Below is my list of ways to identify and avoid fake news on the various forms of media and social media that we encounter daily:

The most obvious place where you will encounter fake news is on actual news sites. But fear not, it is not yet time to beat our chests and cry out about the fall of truth and just journalism. You just have to be smart when looking at your news. Generally, physical newspapers

are more or less free from fake news. Some newspapers such as Daily Sun will publish sensational stories based on anecdotal evidence but that is really up to you to decide whether you want to read about the 63-year-old Gogo that claims to be held ransom by a graveyard spirit or not.

When checking out the news online, always be sure to check the website URL. Many fake news sites attempt to imitate real news sites by adding something to the end of the URL. For example, a fake news site may be called msnbc.com.co.

This appears to be the same as the usual MSN news site but the extra .co at the end is an indication that this is a fake site. So look out for sites that have strange .co or .io endings to their URLs. Another thing to look out for is sensational claims with no true evidence to back them.

You could also do a quick search on the author to see if their work has been published by any other reputable sites or whether they’re simply known for their sensational and poorly-backed claims and stories.

Many of us use Facebook to connect with our loved ones. We can post photos, watch amusing cat videos and share our thoughts on anything ranging from politics

to baking. It is a brilliant example of social media and some are suggesting that it should be left at that. While one view is that we should simply not use Facebook for news at all, this can be a difficult feat with all the stories that pop up on our feed.

As such, Facebook itself has provided a few tips to avoid being duped by fake news. Last year Facebook advised that sources could be providing fake news when they have dramatic headlines that are eye-catching or controversial, sometimes with many exclamation marks. Also, odd formatting or poor spelling is a definite red flag.

The one upside to WhatsApp so far is that companies and the shady characters of the world seem to have not yet figured out how to send spam via WhatsApp. This means that the only way fake news is distributed via WhatsApp is by our very own friends and family. This usually happens when people send you an interesting article they read or a link to some or other story. Sometimes they may even be sending you some community warning to look out for a new form of hijacking or criminalism.

Many of these such things are sent in the best spirit. But unfortunately, stories such as these may in many cases be fake news too. That’s not to say we should spurn our great aunt or tell Mooikloof’s Santa not to deliver a present to our neighbour this year because of their WhatsApps. We just need to be vigilant. Follow the rules of identifying fake news. I would advise not opening strange links. And if you do happen to read the story, take it with a pinch of salt and discuss the validity of it sometime at a braai.

I hope that you're now slightly better prepared for this new technological adventure the world seems to have decided to embark on. Technology can most certainly be used for good, it's just the same as everything else, we need to understand the evils before we can embrace the good parts.

All the best on your cyber journeys!

By Debbie Walton

The 28 species of Encephalartos (cycads) found in southern and tropical Africa are living fossils.Cycads are present-day repre-sentatives of plants which grew more than 200 million years ago.

They have remained virtually unchanged since then and are extremely slow-growing.

Indigenous cycad species require a permit, and even seedlings from a legitimate plant will have to be accounted for – the reason being the extensive illegal trade in plants that have just about eliminated cycads in some parts of our country.

All cycads are propagated from seed or from slow-growing suckers. There are separate male and female plants which can be distinguished when the cones are formed.

Plants from certain Encephalartos species are available from legitimate growers.

Although not difficult as a garden plant, growing Encephalartos is seen as a specialised hobby, expen-sive and not pursued by the average gardener.

Exotic cycads belonging to the Cycas, Dioon and Zamia families can be grown without a permit in South Africa. Also known as the sago palm, Cycas revoluta is originally from Japan and it is a great focal plant that adds texture to a garden. Remember, the sharp leaf tips can be an irritating problem when plants are too close to a pathway.

The plants are reasonably fast-growing and easy to propagate. A happy plant can produce new leaves three times a year. Water and fertiliser requirements are low. Fertilise only once a year with a suitable slow-release product. Cycas revoluta prefers a well-drained neutral soil with pH 6.5 to 7.0. Side shoots/ suckers can be removed and planted at the start of summer.

Cycas revoluta plants are generally disease-free, but un-suitable growing situations can put plants under stress.

Leaf rot will discolour the leaves, causing them to eventually drop.Root rot will cause the leaf to wilt, then discolouration with

leaves dropping and the trunk oozing black liquid until it rots away.

Correct drainage and watering will prevent fungus infections; and applying systemic fungicides in the early stages of the diseases is effective.

Yellow leaves and a frizzle top can be caused by a lack of manganese, and applying a dosage two to three times a year will be an effective treatment. Correction of soil pH might be needed and a well-drained soil medium is essential. Plants in full sun in a very hot position will also turn yellow.

Weevils on cycads can be devastating. Their eggs hatch and the larvae will tunnel into the trunk, destroying it completely. From the pupae emerge mature weevils and thus the cycle is repeated. Badly tunnelled plants should be removed and destroyed. Koinor can be applied as a preventative soil treatment and will eradicate the eggs and small larvae, but it is not effective against the mature insect.

Red spiders/mealybugs should be treated with suitable insecticides when the signs are visible. Scale can be treated with mineral oil. Remove the dead scale gently.

vir ’n Ford Mustang bestem was.

En glo my, as ek so luister, was daar baie duine – nie molshope nie.

Deelnemers moes oor twee weke amper 8 800km aflê.

As ek aan hierdie leuse dink: No success comes without great assistance dink ek aan Hennie se vrou Fransica en hulle twee pragtige dogters, Elné en Monja.

Health

Deur Breyten Breytenbach

Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipid) found in your blood. When you eat, your body converts any calories it doesn’t need to use right away into triglycerides. The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells.

Later, hormones release triglycerides for energy between meals. Eating an excess of refined carbo-hydrates in your diet may lead to high triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia).

Triglycerides and cholesterol are separate types of lipids that circulate in your blood. Triglycerides store unused calories and provide your body with energy, and cholesterol is used to build cells and certain hormones. Because triglycerides and cholesterol can’t dissolve in blood, they circulate through-out your body with the help of proteins that transport the lipids (lipoproteins).

High triglycerides may contribute to heart disease and possible pancreatitis.

High triglycerides are often a sign of other conditions that increase the risk of heart disease and stroke as well. A cluster of conditions that includes too

Sometimes high triglycerides are a sign of the following:

What is the best way to lower triglycerides?

• Poorly controlled type 2 diabetes,

• Low levels of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism),

• Liver or kidney disease, or

• Rare genetic conditions that affect how your body converts fat to energy.

• High triglycerides could also be a side effect of taking medications such as beta blockers, birth control pills, diuretics or steroids.

A healthy lifestyle is the key:

• Lose weight. If you’re over-weight, weight loss can help lower your triglycerides. Motivate yourself by focusing on the benefits of losing weight, such as more energy and improved health.

• Cut back on calories. Remember that extra calories are converted to triglycerides and stored as fat. Reducing your calories will reduce triglycerides. A personalized plan from your dietitian will calculate the correct nutrients for YOUR needs.

• Avoid sugary and refined foods. Simple carbohydrates, such as sugar and foods made with white flour, can increase triglycerides.

• Choose healthier fats. Swap saturated fat found in meats for healthier monounsaturated fat found in plants, such as olive and canola oils. Substitute fish high in omega-3 fatty acids — such as tuna, sardine, mackerel and salmon — for red meat (beef & lamb). Eat chicken and fish more regularly.

• Limit how much alcohol you drink. Alcohol is high in calories and sugar and has a particularly potent effect on triglycerides. Even small amounts of alcohol can raise triglyceride levels.

• Exercise regularly. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most or all days of the week. Regular exercise can lower triglycerides and boost “good” cholesterol. Take a brisk daily walk, swim laps or join an exercise group.

much fat around the waist, obesity, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, high blood sugar and abnormal cholesterol levels. This is commonly known as the metabolic syndrome.

A great supplement to include is omega 3. Make sure your supplement is low in heavy metals and has adequate EPA and DHA in it. Triglycerides are sensitive to dietary changes. Eating a better diet will definitely lower triglycerides. It’s about making a lifestyle change and eating healthy tasty foods.

Wildl i fe

In and around the rocky and hilly terrain of our well established indigenous garden in Mooikloof, we have a healthy colony of hedgehogs living in and amongst rockery areas.

These small mammals of the family Erinaceidae are found in Angola, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Tanzania, South Africa and Namibia as well similar species in Europe, South East Asia and Borneo. They range in size from a small mouse to a small rabbit.

Hedgehogs are covered in small sharp spines, which they use to protect themselves with when threatened or in danger, by rolling into a tight ball, enabling them to protect all vulnerable areas of their bodies. Hedgehogs have 44 teeth and can be found living in burrows which they dig, or under logs or in rocky areas. They have also been observed swimming and can also climb.

Hedgehogs live on a varied diet of fruits, roots, insects, carrion, invertebrates as well as reptiles. They are curiously resistant to snake venom and other environmental toxins.

Hedgehogs are mainly nocturnal and some species may also hibernate in winter.

They appear to be facultatively heterothermic ie: they can adapt their metabolic rate and body temperature in relation to the prevailing weather conditions.

Hedgehogs can have up to two breeding seasons a year; young are born with soft spines that quickly harden. Although hedgehogs live in colonies, they are solitary mammals.

They are preyed on by nocturnal raptors such as owls and in suburbia mainly by dogs, snakes and the larger mongoose species.

Hedgehogs are prone to several infections, such as mite infestations on their spiny protrusions, pneumonia, cancer, gastro intestinal disorders as well as a neurological condition called wobbly hedgehog syndrome.

To encourage these unusual mammals into your property, create areas of indigenous plants and trees with piles of wood or rocks in which these mammals can hide. Avoid the use of insecticed sprays to help develop a healthy environment for these animals to forage in.

Natuur

Motoring

A spectacular new Aston Martin sports car demands a bold and distinctive design language. Pure, sculptural forms create an athletic, predatory stance, while the minimal front and rear overhangs, muscular flanks and broad haunches express the agility and dynamism inherent within the car. New head and tail lights form dramatic new signatures giving the Vantage unmistakable road presence and contribute to a strong and individual identity within the growing Aston Martin model range.

Aerodynamic performance was central to the Vantage design concept: the front splitter directs airflow underneath the car, where a system of fences channels cooling air to where it is needed, and also ensures that the rear diffuser is fed with clean airflow. The design of the diffuser creates an area of low air pressure, while simultaneously preventing turbulence generated by the rear wheels from disrupting the flow of air exiting centrally from beneath the rear of the car.

Together with the new side gills, which have been integrated into the body surface and bleed air pressure out from the front wheel arches, and the pronounced upswept rear deck lid, the Vantage generates a significant level of downforce – a rarity on any production car and a first for a core production Aston Martin model.

The design story continues inside the Vantage, with a dynamic sports car cockpit that rejects long, fluid curves in favour of sharp, focused lines denoting the more aggressive nature of the car. A high waist interior theme and lower driving position create a more immersive driving experience, and contribute to significant gains in occupant space and sizeable improvement in headroom compared with the outgoing Vantage. A combination of rotary and toggle-style controls has been used, with tactile and intuitive functionality. Likewise, the PRND transmission buttons have been moved into a triangular formation so as to cluster major controls into clearly defined zones. The interior also offers generous stowage space, with useable room behind the seats and generous double-tier storage areas.

The heart of the Vantage is Aston Martin’s potent new alloy, 4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. Set low and as far back in the chassis as possible for optimal centre-of-gravity and perfect 50:50 weight distribution, this high performance, high efficiency engine returns a CO2 figure of *245g/km yet develops 510PS at 6000rpm and 685Nm from 2000-5000rpm. With a dry weight of 1530kg, this gives the Vantage formidable power-to-weight and torque-to-weight ratios – something vividly demonstrated whenever the throttle is squeezed. Detailed tuning of the induction, exhaust and engine management systems has given the Vantage a truly intoxicating character and soundtrack.

The Vantage deploys its impressive power and torque to the rear wheels via a rear-mounted ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. Capable of accelerating from 0 to 96kmph in 3,5 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 313kmph, it employs a sophisticated suite of integrated electronic systems to offer maximum control and driver enjoyment. These include Dynamic Stability Control and Dynamic Torque Vectoring. The speed-dependent electric power steering has 2,4 turns lock-to-lock for an outstanding combination of responsiveness and precise, intuitive control.

For the first time on an Aston Martin, the new Vantage also features an Electronic Rear Differential (E-Diff). This differential is linked to the car’s electronic stability control system, so it can understand the car’s behaviour, and react accordingly to direct the engine’s power to the relevant wheel. Unlike a conventional LSD, it can go from fully open to 100% locked in a matter of milliseconds. At higher speeds, the Electronic Differential’s speed and sensitivity of response enable the system to take very fine control of the car’s dynamic behaviour. It makes the car feel much more composed both in terms of its straight-line stability and its cornering performance, providing the driver with increased levels of confidence to explore and enjoy the car’s capabilities to the full.

The chassis is an evolution of the latest generation bonded aluminium structure first seen on the DB11, though some 70 per cent of the structure’s components are new for the Vantage. Balance, strength, rigidity and weight efficiency were all priorities in the new Vantage design, as was handling purity and consistency. Highlights of the chassis include a solidly mounted rear sub-frame for an enhanced feeling of direct connection for the driver, new Pirelli P Zero tyres developed specifically for the new Vantage and the latest generation Adaptive Damping System which incorporates Skyhook technology and offers the choice of Sport, Sport Plus and Track modes.

Thanks to full integration of engine, transmission, E-Diff, Dynamic Torque Vectoring, Dynamic Stability Control, Adaptive Damping and the electric power steering systems, each mode optimises every area of the car as one. With each step, the Vantage gains in agility and responsiveness, its character becoming progressively sharper, more vocal and more exciting. This is the essence of the Vantage driving experience – a car that’s never less than connected and engaging with the breadth of capability to revel in challenging roads and the ability to bare its teeth on the track.

The Vantage features a high level of standard equipment, including keyless start/stop, tyre pressure monitoring system, parking distance display, park assist and front and rear parking sensors. The In-Car Entertainment system – controlled and viewed via a centrally mounted (20 cm) LCD screen – comprises of the Aston Martin Audio System, Bluetooth® audio and phone streaming, iPod®, iPhone® and USB playback and an integrated satellite navigation system.

Being an Aston Martin, the new Vantage also features a high level of craftsmanship, evidenced by flawless paintwork, luxurious Alcantara® and leather upholstery and the levels of finish optimised through the use of tactile natural materials of the highest quality. There is also extensive scope for personalisation via a generous choice of options. These include forged alloy wheels in a variety of finishes, Sports Plus Collection (comprising Sports Plus seats and Sports steering wheel), carbon fibre interior and exterior detailing and a Premium Audio System.

Stuarts’ Field Guide to National Parks & Nature Reserves of South Africa is an indispensable guide to the country’s best and most accessible conservation areas. Written by two prominent conservationists, this new edition (with slight name change) has been thoroughly revised and updated. Each of the 43 featured reserves - arranged by province - includes:

• Information on the history, location, landscape, geology, vegetation and wildlife;• Text panels covering highlights, climate and facilities;• A detailed map indicating places of interest and top viewing spots.

The book includes more than 900 colour photographs and a pictorial ID-guide at the back that features commonly seen birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, flowers and trees.

Set in Natal in the nineteenth century among the settlers, the homesteaders and the sugar cane farmers, Claire Robertson’s masterful new novel Under Glass tells the story of Mrs Chetwyn, who arrives in Port Natal from India in 1856. She is with her eldest daughter and her ayah, and has been travelling for eleven months to join her husband, who is already deep in the hinterland.

Her father-in-law has staked them their passage, a sum for settlement and an arrange-ment for the purchase of land, but there are conditions to his generosity that will have a lasting effect on the Chetwyns, specially on their fifth child, Cosmo, born years later. It is on the Chetwyns’ sugar cane farm that the reader begins to understand that there is something strange about Cosmo, something that must be kept secret or hidden. At once a deeply researched historical novel and an intriguing mystery, Under Glass is a high-stakes narrative of deception and disguise that will appeal to a range of readers of literary fiction by one of the country’s finest novelists.

A must-have guide to South Africa’s famously diverse and richly populated parks and reserves.

Back Page

Doctors now agree that mum was right – eat fish because it’s good for the brain. More than that, there’s now a suggestion that early humans living along the South African coast and consequently eating lots of fish were more intelligent than humans living inland living off meat and veggies.

And women, because they ate a great deal more shellfish than men – after all they were the gatherers – were probably brighter than their men folk.

Ichthyologist Professor Mike Bruton, who is now a generalist dedicated to promoting science here and in the Middle East, recently gave a talk about fish and brains in Cape Town.

He focused his talk on studies by a friend – archaeologist, Professor John Parkington at the University of Cape Town. Parkington suggested that fish – especially shellfish – because they provide an important nutrient for the brain led to the emergence of the first really intelligent humans.

Parkington studied pre-historic hunter-gatherer people living along the west coast where one finds the world’s largest middens of discarded shells. He is researching a period of time that began before humans migrated from Africa.

Mike Bruton says big-brained humans took a different route in

Humans broke the rule by having a large body AND a large brain - about 2 percent of our body weight.

Our coastal ancestors had access to a high quality food to feed their brains - fish.

Brain development is driven by what a pregnant mother eats while she is breast feeding her baby. And the key nutrients needed are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) without which “children are irremediably mentally and visually disadvantaged”.

PUFAs are uncommon in the meat of terrestrial animals such as antelope but very common

evolution to that of other large mammals. Interpreting Parkington he described how the human species “invested in the process of developing a large brain and skull to contain it”.

As an animal’s body gets bigger the brain gets bigger, though not at the same rate. A large but not terribly bright mammal, like a rhino, typically has a brain about 0.4 percent of the body weight.

in marine and freshwater fish and shellfish.

Bruton says coastal women habitually gathered and ate large amounts of shellfish while men wasted their time and energy hunting down sirloins and chops that provided few nutrients for brain development.

Seafood allowed Homo erectus (the species that preceded our species, Homo sapiens) to accelerate brain development so infusing the human race with a greater intelligence allowing them to eventually become rocket scientists, lawyers, doctors and computer programmers and their children to send sms messages to each other simply by using their thumbs. It seems to be no coincidence that the world’s earliest signs of humans engaging in creative activities – making decorative necklaces, water vessels and advanced stone artifacts – are along the Cape coast.

So it wasn’t simply shambling beetle-browed humans that eventually migrated from Africa - it was intelligent humans.

Parkington, during a lecture, once held aloft an apple and perlemoen shell and said, “Homo sapiens (‘man the wise’) probably came about not in some Middle East orchard but on a Cape beach”.

Gonzales, the fishmonger, would agree with all this.

A customer who marvelled at how quick-witted and intelligent he was asked him: “What makes you so clever Mr Gonzales?"

Gonzales said, “Fish heads. Eat enough and you’ll be positively brilliant. Only R40 apiece.”

The customer bought three. A week later he complained they were disgusting and he didn't feel any smarter.

“You didn’t eat enough,” said Gonzales. The customer went home with 20 more. Two weeks later he was back – and angry.

“Hey, Gonzales,” he said, “you’re selling me fish heads for R40 a piece when I can buy the whole fish for that. You're ripping me off!”

“You see?” said Gonzales. “You’re smarter already!”
