May President’s Message

I am composing this May message in the first week of April after receiving a raft of confusing and obtuse Federal Forms 1065 and California Forms 565 that must be incorporated into Gretchen’s and my individual income tax returns that must be filed by April 18th. So this will be a short message consisting of two announcements: Recording Secretary: We still need a recording secretary. Somebody out there must be able to take notes and type. Total time required is only about 2 ½ hours per month. This includes attending the Board meeting from 10:00-11:30 on the first Monday of every month (1 ½ hours) to record the minutes and then typing them up to send to the President. Don’t look for someone else to step up. If you have those skills, will you please volunteer? Redirected contribution: I expect you will recall that in 2015 and 2016 Moraga Movers gave $5,000 to the Town to replace the gateway signs into the Town. Our donation was contingent on the Town providing the additional funds to accomplish that goal. Due to higher priorities (such as fixing the sink hole), the Town passed on replacing the gateway signs and returned the $10,000 to Moraga Movers. Your Board of Directors was then pleased to redirect that returned contribution to the All-Access Playground to be constructed at the Commons Park. See you at the movie on April 19th for The Rainmaker. After filing our tax returns on the day before, I may bring a stronger beverage to have with my popcorn. Does anyone know if popcorn goes with gin?

Program: HeartSafe Lamorinda

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the nation. More than 400,000 people suffer out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) annually in the US. Sadly less than ten percent of those who suffer SCA outside the hospital survive. A victim’s chance of survival decreases by 10 percent every minute that CPR and defibrillation is delayed. Even with the best trained emergency responders it is difficult for these responders to reach every patient quickly. The Lamorinda cities are joining together with the Moraga Orinda Fire District, the Rescue One Foundation, Contra Costa County Fire and Contra Costa County Emergency Medical Services, through its Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program, to help Lamorinda insure that anyone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest in our community will have the best possible chance for survival. The program, called "HeartSafe Lamorinda”, is rolling out in May. Bystander CPR and early defibrillation are two key links in what’s called the “Chain of Survival”. The community plays an important role in recognizing cardiac events, calling 911 at the first signs of distress, providing CPR and using our public access automatic defibrillators (AEDs). AEDs are safe and easy to use, making it possible for non-medical personnel to provide rapid defibrillation to save a life. The after-dinner presentation will include information about Moraga’s Public Access Defibrillators and training on hands-only CPR.

CLASSIC FILMS Larry Swindell.

The Movers’ classic movie for Wednesday, April 19th is THE RAINMAKER, a period piece set in parched small-town Kansas in 1913. The 1956 film in Technicolor stars Katharine Hepburn as a local spinster, Wendell Corey as the town sheriff mooning awkwardly after her, and Burt Lancaster as a charming con man promising rain for the town’s desperate populace. The classic film for Wednesday,May 17th at the Rheem is one of the great melodramas of all time. THE MALTESE FALCON (1941) was a film noir before the term existed. Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre head the cast. The adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s famous crime novel was by John Huston, who also directed. Screening is at 2 p.m. in the main downstairs theater. Larry Swindell has a lot to say about this movie to get you in a mood to watch a true classic. The Moraga Art Gallery announces its springtime show, “Color and Caprice,” an exhibit that spotlights member artist Angelica Samame’s eye-catching collection of stylized portraits of sophisticated women—slender and fashionably-clad. The show also features guest artist, Elizabeth Russell, aka Liz R Honeypots, from Forestville, CA, whose ceramics consist of utilitarian platters, mugs, casserole dishes and more. When not in use, all her piece serve equally well as art objects, each boldly and tastefully decorated with a unique design derived from nature: trees, plants, and a menagerie of owls, honeybees, whimsical sea creatures—even mythical beasts and dragons. Artwork by the gallery’s fifteen member artists as well as additional guest artists will also be on display from now until June 3rd. The gallery is located at 522 Center Street, Rheem Shopping Center, in Moraga. Hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 12 noon to 5:00 PM. For more information, visit the Gallery’s website: www.moragaartgallery.com, call 925-376-5407 or email [email protected]. Saint Mary’s College Museum of Art has an exhibit by artist and faculty member Peter Freund entitled “IRAN/USA” featuring video arts and prints that will continue through May 28th. The multi-language exhibit re-envisions key moments of the politically-charged history of the two countries through the lens of an experimental artist. Open 11:00 AM – 4:30 PM on Wednesdays through Sundays; $5.00 admission.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

An elementary teacher presented her first grade students with half of several well-known proverbs and asked them to complete the other half. Below is the results:

Don’t change horses … until they stop running.

Strike while the … bug is close.

A miss is as good as a … Mr.

An idle mind is … the best way to relax.

If at first you don’t succeed … get new batteries.

Children should be seen and not … spanked or grounded.

Better late than … pregnant.

When the blind lead the blind … get out of the way.
