Morehead State vs. Kentucky - Nov. 17, 2009 - 2009-10 Game Notes - 2

Mike Bradbury is in his third season as head women’s basketball coach at MSU. In his first two seasons, Bradbury has guided the program to 28 wins and two appearances in the OVC Tournament. Before MSU, Bradbury had spent the last five seasons as the top assistant coach at Xavier University. He has also had coaching assignments at University of Cincinnati, East Tennes-see State, Virginia Commonwealth and his alma mater, Chat-tanooga. Bradbury has become known as a gifted recruiter, and has landed several top 25 recruiting classes while at Xavier and Cincinnati. His first MSU signing class ranked 55th in the nation. He signed the nation’s top-ranked player at Xavier in 2006-07. While at UC, he signed three top 25 classes. In each of his last ten seasons as an assistant coach, his teams qualified for postseason play. In all, 12 of the 17 teams he has been involved with have made postseason appearances, and nearly every team has posted a .500 record or better. Bradbury spent five seasons at Xavier, and all five resulted in postseason appearances, including two NCAA tournament berths. In his first season at Xavier, in 2002-03, the Musketeers went 20-10 overall and advanced the NCAA Tournament first round after posting a 12-19 record the season before. In 2006-07, Bradbury helped lead XU to a 26-8 record and another NCAA Tournament berth. In between, his teams made three consecutive WNIT appearances, including a quarterfinal game in 2004-05. In his five seasons, Xavier was 106-50 (.679 winning percentage). Prior to his time at Xavier, Bradbury was a top assistant coach and the primary recruiter for cross-town school Cincinnati for six years, where he helped the Bearcats to two NCAA Tourna-ment berths and a 127-57 record (.690 winning percentage). His UC career culminated in the 2001-02 team going 27-5 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament second round. He also helped mentor the 1998-99 team to a 22-9 record and a first-round NCAA game. Bradbury’s time at UC resulted in three WNIT appearances as well. Bradbury went to Cincinnati after one season at VCU and one at East Tennessee State. At ETSU, his 1994-95 team took sixth place in the WNIT and compiled a 21-9 record. His coach-ing career began at Chattanooga, where he graduated in 1993 with a degree in recreation. He spent the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons as a student assistant coach before his first full-time as-sistant coaching assignment came in 1993-94. The 1991-92 UTC team also advanced to the NCAA Tournament first round. Bradbury and his wife Christy have a son, Alex (3).

Morehead State vs. Kentucky - Nov. 17, 2009 - 2009-10 Game Notes -

Series Notes Against KentuckyThe Eagles and Wildcats have a long history dating all the way back to MSU’s first recorded varsity season in 1970-71. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 27-5, but the two schools have not met in women’s basketball since the 1994-95 season. The only MSU win in that 29-year period came on Jan. 3, 1989 in Moreghead, 74-70. Below is a run-down of the series history.

Rounding out the poll are Jacksonville State (84 points), Murray State (79 points), Southeast Missouri (67 points), Tennessee Tech (58 points), Eastern Kentucky (54 points) and UT Martin (18 points). Morehead State is coming off a season in which it went 17-14 overall and 11-7 in the OVC to finish fourth. The Eagles made their third straight trip to the Conference tournament last year, falling to Austin Peay in the first round. Hamilton TimeSenior guard Tiffany Hamilton also earned preseason recognition from the Ohio Valley Confer-ence on the First-Team All-OVC squad. Hamilton ranked second on the team with 11.2 points per game in 2008-09 and drained 66 three-pointers to rank third in the OVC.

It’s Raining TreysMorehead State led all NCAA and NAIA teams in three-pointers made and three-pointers at-tempted last year. The Eagles hit a school-record 264 treys (8.5 per game) and attempted an OVC record 822 from beyond the arc (26.5 per game). That figure broke the previous record of 683 by 139. The 264 was only three short of an OVC record as well. MSU has picked back up right where it left off last year as the Eagles drained 10 three-pointers on 25 attempts in the season opener at SIU Edwardsville.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Host SIU Edwards-ville outscored the Morehead State women’s basketball team 37-29 in the second half Friday night and rallied past the Eagles 67-64 at the Vadalabene Center in both teams’ 2009-10 sea-son opener. Overall, the Eagles did out-rebound the Cou-gars 47-46, but SIUE brought down 11 second half offensive rebounds and turned that into 11 second chance points. The Eagles committed 22 turnovers leading to 22 SIUE points. MSU led 35-30 at the half but was only able to shoot 28 percent overall in the final 20-minute period. Junior Chynna Bozeman led MSU with 13 points and also had eight rebounds and a team best three assists. Freshman Ashar Harris notched a double-double of 11 points and a team high 10 rebounds in her first collegiate game. Sophomore Abby Steele scored a career high nine points off the bench, and sophomore Ashley Martin grabbed 10 rebounds. The Eagles collected 23 offensive boards in the game. The Cougars were led by Ashley Bey with a game high 18 points. Raven Berry did some damage off the bench with 15 points, including 13 in the second half. She had a pair of three-point plays as well. Melia Duncan totaled 12. MSU grabbed an early 5-0 lead but that was quickly erased as the Cougars went on a 16-6 run to lead 16-11 with 14:04 left. MSU finally was able to re-gain its advantage at 29-28 after a Bozeman trey with 3:32 left in the opening half. Steele hit a jumper with 1:13 left that gave the Eagles their 35-30 lead at the intermission. The Cougars effectively held MSU at bay for the first nine minutes of the second half. The eagles managed just one field goal and were outscored 19-4 down to the 11:25 mark. At that point, the Cougars held their largest lead of the night at 10, 49-39. The Eagles trailed 54-46 with eight minutes left but were able to scratch their way back into contention. A Tiffanie Stephens three-ball with 3:47 left brought MSU to within 57-55. However, just as quickly as MSU thought it was within striking distance, SIUE ran the margin back out to 64-55 with 120 ticks left on the clock. Harris canned a short jumper, and Tiffany Hamilton delivered a trey to get the Eagles to within 64-60. Hamilton then drained another one from beyond the arc, and MSU trailed only 64-63 with 31 second remaining. Bey made one of two free throws to make it a 65-63 game. Steele then stole an inbounds pass and was fouled with 17 seconds left. She hit the first free toss but missed the second. Harris got the rebound, her 10th, but Bey stripped the ball away and made two free throws to settle the final margin. Bozeman launched a three-ball at the buzzer but fell short.

New AdditionTomeka Brown is a new addition to the MSU coaching staff this year. She came to MSU after two seasons serving as Director of Basketball Operations at Cincinnati. She also coached at Africentric High School in Columbis, Ohio where she mentored current Eagle freshman Ashar Harris and junior Chynna Bozeman.

Home Sweet HomeThe Eagles will be able to enjoy the friendly confines of Johnson Arena a lot during the early portion of their schedule. The first four are at home this year and seven of MSU’s first 11 games will be played here in Morehead.

Tournament TimeThe Eagles are participating in two in-season tournaments this season. MSU has not played in two in-season tournaments since the 2004-05 season.

Steele the OneSophomore Abby Steele started off her second collegiate campaign on a high note. She was 2-of-3 from three-point range and scored a career high nine points at SIU Edwardsville. Steele also made a career high five steals. Her nine points eclipsed her entire career total as she scored just seven points last year as a true freshman.

MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Morehead State women’s basketball team outscored Kentucky State 48-22 in the second half of Saturday’s exhibition game as the Eagles pulled away for an 83-49 win over the Thorobreds at Johnson Arena.

Head coach Mike Bradbury received balanced pro-duction from his starters and bench as the bench scored 49 of the 83 points and no player had to see more than 23 minutes of action. Ohio Valley Conference preseason Player of the Year Chynna Bozeman led the Eagles with 15 points, while freshman forward Ashar Harris registered a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Ashley Martin also dotted double figures in the point column with 10.

After holding onto a 35-27 halftime advantage, MSU shot 52 percent (15-of-29) in the final 20 minutes while holding KSU to only 26 percent (7-of-27). The Eagles also were extremely efficient at the free throw line on the night hitting 22-of-26 for 85 percent. Ball movement also proved to be a key factor as MSU was credited for 22 assists of 26 baskets and hit nine three-pointers. MSU also blocked nine shots.

Kentucky State got 13 points each from Latrice Watkins and Stephanie Harper.

The Eagles out-rebounded the ‘Breds 42-41. Deja Watson pulled down seven for the Eagles, while Tiffany Hamilton tallied six boards. Abby Steele topped the assist leaderboard with five.

MSU led 17-7 at the 10:15 mark of the first half after a Hamilton three-pointer, but the Thorobreds cut into the lead with a 12-5 run. At 5:15 left in the opening half, MSU led 22-17. Bozeman, Martin and Tiffanie Stephens drained treys in the next two minutes to push the advantage out to 33-19. The Eagles led 35-27 the the break.

A 16-6 run to start the final half ballooned the martin out to 20 (53-33) and from then on it only got larger. From the 15:34 mark to the 3:53 mark, MSU limited KSU to just two successful field goals. The largest lead was 36 on four occasions.

MOREHEAD, Ky. - Junior Chynna Bozeman scored 20 points, senior Tiffanie Stephens added 19, freshman Ashar Harris grabbed 15 rebounds, and the Morehead State women’s basketball team hit 14 three-pointers en route to an 89-52 win over the visiting Pikeville College Lady Bears in an exhi-bition game Sunday at Johnson Arena.

“I thought we showed improvement in our transi-tion game and our rebounding and that’s what we have been working on this week,” said head coach Mike Bradbury. “Tiffanie Stephens had a really solid game today, and Ashar Harris is going to be a great addition this year for rebounding.”

Stephens scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half as the Eagles outscored the Lady Bears 49-30 after taking a 40-22 halftime lead. She also pulled down seven rebounds. Harris had eight boards by the break and collected seven more in the final 20 minute period. She had seven offensive rebounds today as well. Bozeman went 5-for-9 from three-point range for her team high 20 points. Tiffany Hamilton also reached double figures with 13 points.

The Eagles were 14-of-36 from three-point terri-tory. MSU led the nation in most treys made and attempted last season. Overall, the Eagles shot 44 percent (33-for-75) from the field, including 9-for-12 from the free throw line, and out-rebounded Pikeville 48-32. The Eagles also tallied 22 assists and had 18 steals off 26 Pikeville mistakes. That turned into 34 points off turnovers for MSU as they also held a 25-5 advantage in second-chance points. Twenty offensive rebounds helped that stat line.

Pikevile was led by 15 points and five rebounds from Whitney Compton.

The Eagles darted out to a 20-9 lead in the first nine minutes and led by as much as 23 (37-14) with 1:58 remaining in the opening half. The Eagles held the Lady Bears to 30 percent shooting in the first half.

The second half was much of the same as the Eagles built as much as a 38-point lead (85-47). MSU hit seven three-pointers in the first half and equaled that in the final half.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Host SIU Edwardsville outscored the Morehead State women’s basketball team 37-29 in the second half Friday night and rallied past the Eagles 67-64 at the Vadalabene Center in both teams’ 2009-10 season opener. Raven Berry did some dam-age off the bench with 15 points, including 13 in the second half. The Eagles trailed 54-46 with eight minutes left but were able to scratch their way back into con-tention. Harris got the rebound, her 10th, but Bey stripped the ball away and made two free throws to settle the final mar-gin. Bozeman launched a three-ball at the buzzer but fell short.
