(BPT) - Follow these five fast fixes and inspections to cruisethrough the summer and avoid roadside headaches.

Tire careTires perform differently in different weather conditions, so as

the weather changes, it’s important to check tire pressure and tiretread. To check tire tread, see if the built-in “wear bars” are visible. These are narrow strips of rubber across the tires that appear whenthe tread is worn down to one-sixteenth of an inch. If you can seewear bars, your tires need to be replaced.

Now that you’ve put in the effort to make your tires safe, makethem shine. The Tire Shine Coating from Dupli-Color will keepyour tires looking like new all season long. It’s easy to apply andfeatures Shine-Last technology. Its formula lasts five times longerthan silicone-based tire dressings, so tires will keep their shinethrough rain and other harsh elements. Simply spray it on your tiresand hit the open road in style.

De-winterize your carDe-winterizing your car is easy and affordable. First, check all

the fluid levels - coolant, transmission, differential, power steeringand brake fluid - to make sure there aren’t any leaks. It’s also agood idea to change the oil between seasons, as oil gets thick andcollects condensation if it sits in the engine all winter.

It’s also important to thoroughly clean the-undercarriage-ofyour car after a long winter, especially if you live in a snowy cli-mate. To avoid spending extra money on detailing, clean the under-carriage yourself using a basic water hose or high-pressure cleaningsystem. In just a few minutes, you can ensure your vehicle is readyfor the new road conditions and help you avoid any unnecessaryissues.

Paint protectionWinter can be tough on a car’s exterior and sunshine will reveal

every nick, chip and scratch in your vehicle’s paint. Restoring yourride’s original factory finish takes only minutes with the easy-to-

apply Dupli-Color ScratchFix 2 in 1. This innovative touch-uppaint product is available in hundreds of Exact-Match colors fordomestic and imported vehicles.

Simply use your vehicle’s make, model and year to find yourguaranteed matching color code, and use one of the two applicatorsto fix any scrapes or nicks in no time. With a roller ball tip for pre-cision and a tapered brush for full coverage, ScratchFix 2 in 1 willnot only make your car look great, it will also protect the damagedsurface from rusting and becoming a big, expensive problem.

Check the ACYour air conditioning system will be working overtime in the

summer, so take time to test it to make sure it’s working properlysooner, rather than later. Since the vehicle’s refrigerant is underhigh pressure and harmful to the atmosphere, it’s best to leave anyinspection or maintenance to a qualified professional. Mechanicscan easily trap and recycle used refrigerant with the proper tools, and you can drive off with confidence you’ll stay cool all summer.

Inspect hoses and beltsThe key to comfortable, safe summer driving is keeping the

engine cool, and hoses and belts play a huge part in helping yourengine run properly. Hoses pump coolant to and from the engineblock, and belts run the fan that cools the system further. If thehoses crack or the belts snap, the radiator will quickly overheat, leaving you stranded.

Check hoses for cracks, leaks and loose connections. Hosesshould be firm, never soft and malleable, and belts can be visuallychecked for damage. If anything is noticeably wrong, get it fixedimmediately, before you’re stranded in the summer heat.

Vehicles need updating and maintenance through the changingof the seasons, but a few easy steps can prevent a summer of unex-pected issues and repairs. Start now on these preventative mainte-nance tips and you’ll be cruising smoothly all season long.

(NAPS)—When it’s time forspring-cleaning, remember toinclude your car. Cleaning yourvehicle inside and out preventsthe buildup of damaging chemi-cals and dirt, reduces the poten-tial for rust from road salt andhelps ensure proper visibilityneeded for safe driving.

How To Clean Your CarTo get started, remove any

clutter from inside the car, including items that have accu-mulated in the trunk that can addextra weight and reduce fuel effi-ciency. The next step is to thor-oughly clean and vacuum theinterior and wash the windows.

When washing the outside, include the tires, wheels, undersideand fenders to eliminate any road salt or grime. Wheels and tiresshould be cleaned with a mitt other than the one used to wash thebody. This will avoid contaminating the vehicle’s paint with debrisfrom the wheels and tires.

Wash in the shade and with a product sold specifically for cars.Wash one section at a time, thoroughly rinsing away the soap asyou go. Work your way down toward the front, sides and rear ofthe vehicle. Clean the fenders and bumpers last since they will havethe most dirt and grime that can contaminate the wash mitt.

Give the car a final rinse: Remove the spray nozzle from thehose and let the water cascade down the surfaces of the vehicle. Toavoid water spots, dry your car with a chamois or other productmade for drying.

The last step is to wax the car. This should be done out of direct

sunlight and every six months. It goes a long way toward pro-tecting the vehicle’s finish andmakes subsequent washes easi-er.

If you found any stone chips, rust or other problem spotswhile washing your vehicle, theexperts at the Car Care Councilrecommend having these takencare of immediately to preventfurther damage.

The Council is the source ofinformation for the “Be CarCare Aware” consumer educa-tion campaign promoting the

benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to con-sumers.

(NAPS)—Your car can go farther for less if you take a fewsteps to keep it efficient.

It helps to take meticulous care of your vehicle by following themanufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedules and usingthe right products inside and out. This includes getting your oilchanged, rotating your tires, checking hoses and belts for wear, replacing worn windshield wipers and keeping your vehicle clean.

Another way to extend the life of your vehicle and improve fuelefficiency is to make sure your fuel system is clean.

To help, here are a few fuel system basics.

What does a fuel system do? A fuel system’s job is to properlymaintain fuel demand. The fuel is eventually sprayed from the fuelinjectors into the intake stream and into the combustion chamber.

What does a fuel system con sist of? Depending on whether it’sa return or a returnless fuel system, it can consist of the fuel tank, fuel pump, sending fuel lines, fuel rail, fuel injectors, fuel pressureregulator and returning fuel lines. If you have a returnless system, there is no fuel pressure regulator or return fuel lines.

How do I know my fuel system needs to be cleaned? If yourfuel injectors have become clogged from deposits, they are not ableto provide the wide and fine spray of fuel needed for the spark toignite it. There are a few signs that may indicate you need to cleanyour fuel system.

- You are getting lower gas mileage.- There is a hesitation when you put your foot on the gas pedal.- You are experiencing a loss of power when driving

One easy and convenient solution is to use a total fuel systemcleaner such as Max-Clean by premium synthetic lubricant manu-

facturer Royal Purple. It can clean fuel lines and injectors, restorefuel economy and reduce both engine buildup and tailpipe emis-sions by deeply penetrating and cleaning injectors, carburetors, intake valves and combustion chambers.

The lubricant works in a variety of en gines whether new or old, gasoline or diesel. One bottle will treat 15 to 20 gallons. You justpour it into a nearly empty tank and refuel.

Fuel system maintenance can easily be added to your regularvehicle maintenance routine. Not only will it improve your vehi-cle’s fuel efficiency, it can save you from having to make costlyrepairs that may be needed when fuel deposits are left to build up.

(NAPS)—Look around yourhome and you’ll probably see afew important items you are plan-ning to replace—a tattered chair, those old running shoes, the livingroom wallpaper.

There are also important partson your vehicle that need to bereplaced when they get old—including your shock absorbersand struts. But replacing them ismore than just a matter of keeping

your vehicle fresh—it can also help keep you and your family safe.

“Shocks and struts are hidden behind the wheels, so their condi-tion isn’t as easy to see, and drivers tend to miss the gradual loss ofsteering, stopping and stability that occurs as they wear out,” saysCarri Irby, brand manager for Monroe shocks and struts manufac-turer Tenneco Inc. “So it’s im portant to have the vehicle’s ride con-trol system inspected at least once a year and to replace wornshocks and struts at 50,000 miles.” (Actual mileage may varydepending on driver ability, vehicle type and driving and road con-

ditions, according to Irby.)

Shocks and struts are part of a system of interrelated under-carcomponents known as the “Safety Triangle.” Other elements of thissystem are the tires, brakes and chassis parts, such as ball joints andtie rod ends. When any of these parts is worn, the entire system canbe compromised, leading to a loss of steering precision, stoppingperformance and overall vehicle stability in a variety of driving sit-uations.

To reinforce this important safety message, the Monroe brandrecently launched an extensive North American marketing cam-paign titled “Everything Gets Old. Even Your Shocks.” The cam-paign contrasts these vital but often overlooked vehicle compo-nents with worn everyday items that most consumers replace on amore frequent basis—shoes, toothbrushes, batteries, and even tires.

“It’s vital to understand that while you might not be able to seethem without getting down on your hands and knees, shocks andstruts take an incredible beating and they do get old,” said Irby.“Protect your safety by asking your vehicle service provider for aride control inspection and, if your shocks and struts are worn out, have them replaced.”

(BPT) - Hitting 100,000 miles on the odometer for most peoplemeans it’s time to start car shopping. But for others it’s a personalchallenge to go the extra mile, save a little cash and take their carsanother 100,000 miles.

Racking up miles can evoke pridein some, but it is more than just brag-ging rights. Many people are drivingcars tens and hundreds of thousandsof miles further simply to keep theirwallets a little fuller. For Dave Neil,a professional bus driver and a pastorin Minnesota, going the extra milehas meant saving money by collect-ing more than 200,000 miles oneach of his family’s last four vehiclesand driving his current car a whop-ping 430,400 miles.

“It takes patience and luck,” saysNeil of hitting the high mileage. “Itcan be a difficult decision to pay for repairs on older vehicles, espe-cially when those costs are comparable to the value of the car. But,

repair costs are a small price to pay compared to monthly car pay-ments.”

For those who plan on taking a carpast 150,000 miles, routine mainte-nance starting early in a car’s life canhelp mitigate hefty repair costs furtherdown the line. Inevitably though, driv-ers of high-mileage vehicles will soon-er or later face repair costs that chal-lenge their willpower.

“We’re seeing professional truck-ing companies, small business ownersand everyday drivers looking to keeptheir vehicles running longer,” saysAndrew Hamilton, director of lubri-cants for CHS, which manufacturesand markets Cenex fuels, lubricantsand propane through a network ofover 1,400 Cenex brand retailers in

19 states. “Regardless of the size or type of vehicle, it’s almostalways more affordable in the long run to make repairs rather than

to replace a vehicle. And in today’s economy, more and more peo-ple are doing just that.”

Using a good motor oil and changing it frequently and consis-tently throughout a car’s life is essential for getting the most milesfrom it. High-mileage oil is available with added protection forolder cars, but it doesn’t necessarily benefit newer cars.

Hamilton recommends a high-performing synthetic oil, such asCenex Maxtron, which can help take a vehicle that extra mile andimprove fuel economy no matter how many miles it has.

Smart driving is another simple way to keep a car runningsmoothly into the higher miles. Vigilant driving not only helps pre-vent accidents that could shorten a vehicle’s life but also is less tax-ing on an engine and brake system.

To keep a car running well, make a habit of accelerating slowly, using cruise control on the highway and easing up on the brakes.

To learn more about going the extra mile, Hamilton recom-mends visiting tanksofthanks.com.

The website provides consumers and business owners with use-ful information from fuel and maintenances experts, and allowsvisitors to nominate people they know for a free tank of gas.

(BPT) - Summer is the time for road trips, whether they coverthousands of miles across the country, or are “staycation” day trips. As we head into the summer months, gasoline prices continue tofluctuate and are expected to average $3.56 per gallon for regular-grade gasoline, according to the U.S. Energy Information Adminis-tration. Whether you’re driving for hours or sitting in traffic, youwill want to make sure your vehicle is ready for the road.

The most important component that makes your vehicle run isthe engine. Your vehicle will last longer if you take care of theengine by following regularly scheduled maintenance as recom-mended by the manufacturer. This includes oil changes, replacingthe air filter and keeping a detailed history log of the work that hasbeen done.

Just as important to the engine itself are the components aroundit that help it run. Check the hoses that are connected to the radia-tor. They help pump coolant to and from the engine. Look forcracks, leaks and loose connections, paying special attention towhere hoses are clamped. Make sure the engine is cool when youtouch the hoses. They should be firm and not soft. -

Belts that help cool the system should also be checked forcracks and damage. A visual inspection is good enough, but for the

more mechanically inclined, you could also remove the belt tomake sure the material inside isn’t separating into layers. Crackedhoses or a belt snapping will result in your engine overheating, leaving you stuck on the side of the road.

Another way to help cool your engine and protect it is to use aradiator coolant additive like Purple Ice from premium syntheticlubricant manufacturer Royal Purple.

A high performance radiator conditioner, Purple Ice can helpreduce engine temperatures, protect against corrosion and provideimproved vehicle performance.

For use in both gasoline and diesel engines, Purple Ice can bemixed with antifreeze or straight water, and is compatible with fac-tory fill and major brand antifreeze.

Taking the time to maintain your engine and its componentswill get your further down the road and on your way to a greatsummer vacation.

(BPT) - “What is that rattling? Is it serious?” We all can get alittle paranoid about a new sound our car is making. Those soundscan certainly be annoying, but what people don’t realize is some-times those sounds may be linked to something more serious.

About 7 percent of car crashes are caused by some kind of vehi-cle failure, with tire degradation and brake system failures toppingthe list, according to the National Motor Vehicle Crash CausationSurvey from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. But tire and brake failure aren’t the only types of vehicle problemsthat can lead to accidents - engine, steering system and suspensionfailures also cause crashes.

“Getting your oil changed, tires rotated and brake pads checkedregularly not only helps keep your car running smoothly, but it alsohelps keep you and your family safe,” says Matt Myers, senior vicepresident of claims with Erie Insurance. “It’s also important tocheck your car’s transmission fluids and get the 50,000-mile and100,000-mile checks. It might sound like a lot, but regular preven-tative maintenance is the best way to keep those strange car noises -and accidents - to a minimum.”

Here are six common car noises people hear and what theycould mean:

Humming or groaningWhen you hear humming while driving at faster speeds, it’s a

sign there probably is some wear on your tires, which can lead toserious issues. It could be located on the insides of your tires, whichis hard to diagnose on your own, but not having it checked is a risk, because the steel belts in the tire might be coming apart.

GrowlingThis noise could change or even go away when you turn the

wheel, but it is usually caused by a defective front wheel bearing. The change in noise could be a result of the shift in the weight ofthe car as you turn.

Whining and creakingYou might hear these noises backing up or turning. It could be

the result of a ball joint or tie rod seizing up.

SqueakingThis can be a high-pitched, steady annoyance that lets you

know it’s time to get your brake pads checked or replaced.

GrindingThis sound means two pieces of metal are touching when they

shouldn’t be. This sound could be a multitude of things: brakes, powertrain, suspension or something else. Whatever the case, agrinding sound means you need to get your car checked out as soonas possible.

HissingA hissing sound might occur after you turn off your ignition and

can sometimes be followed by smoke from under your hood.

The next time you hear strange noises coming from your car, don’t just turn up the radio to drown them out - get them checkedby a mechanic. Ignoring those noises today could lead to a danger-ous and expensive situation tomorrow.

What those car noises mean
