A Note from Michael... Morris Chapel UMC,
Do you remember when Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordan River into Canaan
(Josh. 3-5)? God’s people had finally arrived; after years of traveling they passed through water
in a moment of transformation. They once were landless, wandering people, clinging to God’s
promise. They had become landed, settled people, recipients of a promise fulfilled. What was
their response to such a profound and beautiful shift in identity?
Gratitude that burst into celebration. Israel celebrated Passover, ate promised-land food.
Wonder that prompted consecration. Israel was circumcised, marked as covenant-people.
Joy carefully preserved as memory. Israel built a twelve-stone altar and began her
storytelling.
This story helps me live the transition from Walkertown to Durham, from Morris Chapel UMC
to Duke Divinity School. It helps me end well. As I think through all I’ve experienced and
learned this summer, I am filled with gratitude, wonder, and joy. My job is to embody those
emotions in celebration, consecration, and memory-making.
One way for me to begin is with an expression of thanksgiving.
Thank you, Morris Chapel. Thank you for welcoming me into your community with
hospitality, for spending time getting to know me, and for allowing me to cultivate my pastoral
identity by serving among you. Thank you for keeping me well fed (since May I’ve discovered
homemade ice-cream, Krispy Kreme, tomato sandwiches, Bojangles, and “true” sweet tea!) and
encouraged. You are a beautiful church family.
While I’m grateful for your community as a whole, I would also like to specifically thank those
who have been especially present to me this summer.
First and foremost, thank you, Don Whicker, for your hospitality, wisdom, and life of integrity,
service, and story. I have valued the late-night talks on the porch, the time spent with your family,
and the legacy you seem to have weaved throughout Morris Chapel.
Thanks to:
Pastor Dan for leading me in the joys and tasks of daily ministry,
Mary Jo and the SPRC for ensuring an internship of excellence,
Samantha and Katie for always giving me reason to laugh,
Sammy and Sammy, the Cooks, the Briles, the Carltons, and the Smoots for helping me
feel at home,
Lucille for your never ending words of encouragement,
Susan Hartman for your compassion and strength,
Scott Day for your southern twang, humor, and leadership,
and, finally, Mallory, Reid, and Alli for your friendship.
Well, if I’m ever chomping on a Krispy Kreme or watching Duck Dynasty in Durham, I’ll
remember y’all with great joy; indeed, “I [will] thank my God every time I remember you,
constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in
the gospel from the first day until now.” I might even hop in my car and come visit.
Just don’t expect me to have acquired a taste for grits.
In a spirit of gratitude, celebration, and remembrance,
—Michael Conner
