Leo started secondary school in September. After only two weeks it was apparent that he had not coped well with the transition from primary school. By half term he had become reclusive, emotional, anxious and had regressed, acting a lot younger than his age. We discovered My Online Schooling through a friend and signed him up. I was educated in Edinburgh before beginning an undergraduate degree at the University of Glasgow. In the latter years at Glasgow University I soon discovered my desire to enter the world of Education. After completing my degree I returned home to Edinburgh where I worked in the Special Educational Needs sector before beginning my postgraduate study in Primary Education at the University of Edinburgh. I graduated from Edinburgh with a distinction in P.G.D.E. Primary.

After more than ten years of experience in the education profession, both in management and private and state teaching in the UK, New Zealand and Uganda, I decided to further my career in establishing My Online Schooling with one simple aim: to improve the educational possibilities for young people.

At My Online Schooling we recognise that each young person learns at a different pace and in their own unique way. Our teachers offer an individualised approach to learning to support each child. For many young people, traditional schooling does not meet their needs. We offer an alternative pathway to education that provides distraction-free, flexible, and curriculum-led learning. The school aims to prepare its pupils for life in the modern world through the use of technology and excellent teaching.

A NEW WAY OF LEARNINGBringing people and knowledge together through online teaching has the power and potential to alter the educational prospects for many of our pupils.

Online schooling is a new and efficient way of learning, which offers a distraction free environment for education. Pupils can see and hear their teacher, ask questions, make comments, work with their peers and use a range of innovative and interactive features.

Class sizes are kept to a maximum of 20 pupils in order to allow an individualised approach to learning, as well as more one-on-one contact with their teacher.

We take pride in our thriving online international community. Our pupils are involved in popular after school clubs and academic support groups.

OUR COMMUNITY

The social aspect of traditional schooling is a key part of learning, and this is emphasised at My Online Schooling. Small class sizes encourage collaboration and pupils can build friendships and develop their leadership skills through the School Common Room, School Houses and After School Clubs. Pupils look forward to our adventure weekends away, where they are given the opportunity to meet fellow pupils and staff members in person.

We prioritise our pupils’ well-being, which is a frequently discussed topic in our weekly School Assemblies. We offer a counselling service for any pupil who is having problems and pupils are also closely monitored by teachers during all of their lessons.

Is Online Schooling a complete alternative to mainstream school?My Online Schooling offers a full-time British education online for children aged between 8 and 18. Pupils are guided through the English National Curriculum from Key-Stage 2 all the way through to A-Level by fully qualified and experienced teachers.

Pupils can choose from both academic and creative subjects. These subjects range from English, Maths and Science and a variety of languages, to Art, Drama and Design and Technology. Subject selection is flexible, meaning pupils can pick and choose subjects based on their personal educational goals to create a timetable suited to their lifestyle and needs.

Is online schooling flexible? Pupils can enrol at any time throughout the year and may choose as many or as few subjects as they wish. One of the key benefits of an online education is that lessons can be accessed anywhere in the world. Pupils can take their schooling with them wherever they go, so plans to travel abroad do not need to cause disruption to their education. Additionally, all the lessons are recorded, meaning pupils can catch up on any missed material at a time that suits them. The recorded lesson database is a fantastic tool that allows pupils to consolidate their learning and go over tricky topics, which is especially helpful over the exam period.

What does a typical day at My Online Schooling look like?Pupils log on early for their live lesson and are greeted by their teacher and fellow pupils in the online classroom. They use a headset to hear the teacher, who is usually delivering the lesson via a Power Point presentation and participate either verbally using a microphone or by typing in the chat box. Once the hour is over, pupils are set a homework task to be completed and submitted by the end of the week.

Lessons are always engaging and fully interactive. A typical day at My Online Schooling could see a pupil performing a poem in their English lesson, making a volcanic eruption in Science experiment club, or figuring out the mystery of the moving stones in Arizona’s Death Valley in Geography.

Can I view my child’s attainment and progress?Once a child is enrolled with us, their parents or guardians are set up with their own personal Parent Portal account. The Parent Portal allows parents to oversee their child’s schooling. The facilities range from being able to monitor attendance and homework submissions, to viewing announcements made by teachers on class pages. Parents are also kept up to date with their child’s academic progress via termly school reports. Here, teachers provide an overview of the pupil’s progress in each lesson, highlighting their strengths and successes as well as advising on areas to improve upon.

Do pupils receive formal qualifications?We follow the English National Curriculum, and our pupils are guided through the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE and A-Level syllabi. Teachers support pupils the whole way through the process, in preparation for their formal examinations. The final result is the achievement of internationally accredited International GCSE and A-Level qualifications which are sought after by many colleges and universities worldwide.

Pupils sit their exams externally in an examination centre nearby. There are thousands of Pearson Edexcel examination centres worldwide, located in over 120 different countries.

Do my children need to be British to study the English National Curriculum?Our school enrols all children of school age, no matter their nationality. Our only requirements are that the pupil must be able to speak English fluently and have access to a PC or Mac with a stable internet connection. For pupils transitioning from a different curriculum, we have a lot of options in place to provide extra support, including academic support groups and one-to-one tuition.

Does online schooling work? For many of our pupils who have moved abroad or experienced difficulties with traditional schools, online schooling has been the solution. This has enabled them to love learning again, and most importantly, become happy in school.

TOM CROMBIE Director & Founder As the Director and founder of My Online Schooling Tom ensures that as a team, we continue to improve the educational possibilities for young people. Tom is responsible for overseeing the running of the school as well as its growth and development. He brings a wealth of experience and passion for education that resonates to the whole team.

EWEN BURGESS Business Development Manager – UK Ewen creates and implements internal HR policies and procedures. He works closely with each member of the Edinburgh and Melbourne offices to ensure, from a HR perspective, that both offices are running concurrently and are focused on delivering MOS values.

REBECCA GREEN School Administrator – UKRebecca is our Lead Administrator at My Online Schooling. This involves a variety of tasks to ensure the smooth every day running of the school. She communicates regularly with the MOS teachers, management staff, parents and pupils.

EMMA WRIGHTParent Support Advisor – UKEmma uses her many years of customer service experience to ensure the smooth communication between the school and My Online Schooling families. As our Parent Support Advisor Emma provides all of our parents and pupils are getting the best support they need.

ZOE MACNAUGHTON Marketing Coordinator & Enrolments Administrator – UKAs one of the School Administrators in the Edinburgh office, Zoe’s day to day role involves ensuring the smooth running of the school. Zoe is also responsible for generally supporting our Academic team and Marketing team.

LAURA MACKAY Marketing Manager – UKCombining her creative flare and experience, Laura is well placed as Marketing and Enrolments Manager. Laura’s role at My Online Schooling is ultimately to ensure that people are aware of the benefits of our school.

EUAN GRAYEducation Manager – UKAs our Education Manager Euan’s role is to ensure that our pupils, their families and our teachers are getting the most out of My Online Schooling. This involves research, planning, training, monitoring, teaching and responding to feedback at all levels of the school.

She is involved in working with parents and teachers to support them, as well as providing assessment and counselling for pupils who need additional support.

ISLA COOPER Business Development Manager – AUIsla leads the team in Melbourne, and as My Online Schooling is an alternative to mainstream education, her role involves ensuring people understand MOS. She is also responsible for forming new business relationships in the Asia-Pacific region.

ALEX CARTER Marketing Coordinator & Administrator – AU Alex is our Marketing Coordinator and Administrator who helps with the general day to day running of the school. She works closely assisting the Marketing managers with varied projects and research.

CURRICULUM

KS2 In Year 4, 5 and 6 we offer our pupils an interactive, enjoyable Primary Education. We strive to keep our class sizes small, as we know this is hugely beneficial to the learning experience. All of our lessons are taught live by our team of experienced primary teachers that are there every step of the way to encourage a passion for learning. There are opportunities for active participation and homework assignments are provided to follow on from lessons and consolidate learning. We recommend English, Maths and Science as the core subjects (all taught at two hours per week), however, pupils may choose to study as few, or as many subjects as they wish (all other subjects taught at one hour per week).

KS3We offer an excellent programme of study in Year 7, 8 and 9 as pupils move into their Secondary Education. Our subject specialist teachers deliver a coherent and engaging curriculum that develops learning and promotes increased independent learning. The use of the break out room feature in our online classes allows for discussions and collaborative work. At this stage, pupils may wish to continue the subjects they studied in KS2 or they may wish to explore other subjects that are offered at KS3 level. Our recommended core subjects continue to be taught at two hours per week, with additional subjects being taught at one hour per week. By the end of Year 9, pupils will have discovered which subjects they have a passion for and wish to study at International GCSE level.

KS4 (International GCSE) In Year 10, pupils typically begin their studies towards achieving their International GCSE qualification. Our KS4 curriculum aims to prepare pupils for their International GCSE examinations at the end of Year 11. Subjects are taught at two hours per week, with Double Award Science being taught at four hours per week. Our subject specialist teachers actively encourage additional study through homework assignments, as well as independent studies to match the time spent learning in class. In the run up to exams our pupils will be provided with tools to help support revision. We also run support groups which provide extra help to consolidate learning.

KS5 (A Levels) In Year 12, pupils may wish to progress on to AS and A Levels. AS levels generally take one year to complete and A levels are studied across two years. Typically, pupils progress to AS and A levels in the academic year following their International GCSE results. Our KS5 curriculum aims to give pupils the chance to develop intellectually as they explore their chosen subjects in greater depth. At this level of learning, we are proud to be able to offer small class sizes to promote the opportunity for more personalised learning. All subjects are taught at three hours per week, with a large emphasis on independent study outwith the classroom studies. All lessons are recorded, and this can prove highly beneficial as a bank of resources for consolidation or clarity.

The English National Curriculum (ENC) is a very well established and recognised curriculum known for providing a broad and balanced, structured education that is relevant and progressive for pupils.
