Dear Friends,

Very little time remains until the opening of MosBuild, the leading build-ing and interiors event. As usual, MosBuild Magazine has prepared a special issue for the opening of the show. The articles and thematic sections contain all the key information on the exhibitions and exhibi-tors, as well as on the extensive business programme. The magazine has been structured in such a way that it will be an essential source of infor-mation and a virtual guide to the exhibition.

At MosBuild new projects are presented, the latest collections are shown for the first time, and new products and technologies are demonstrated.

In the magazine we have tried to focus on new products from our exhibi-tors and to introduce the designers of new collections. The Fenestration section of the magazine features an article about modern trends in facade structures, with comments from Russian and international archi-tects. At the end of the article there is an online survey about how we choose windows.

As a publication we continue to support and develop the topic of green technology in architecture and construction. In this issue we present the projects of the Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut, one of the youngest representatives of sustainable architecture. Eco-friendliness and energy efficiency will be the main issues of the MosBuild business programme, and the magazine has all the details on the various events. For this year’s exhibition we have established the e3 Awards, an international contest for eco-friendly products, and have also launched MosBuild School, a new platform for young architects and students.

Two major sectors will open in the first week of MosBuild. The Building & Interiors sector will run from 2 to 5 April at Expocentre and will comprise ten specialised building and interiors exhibitions.At the same time, the second thematic sector, Fenestra-tion, will open at Pavilion 75 in V.V.C. and will bring to-gether four specialised exhibitions.The second week of MosBuild will be held from 16 to 19 April at Expocentre and will be entirely devoted to the thematic sector Cersanex, which includes five large-scale exhibitions

Exhibitors. Every year, the MosBuild exhibition brings to-gether the international professional community, and be-

comes an integrated information, cultural and business space. More than 2300 exhibitors from 41 countries and over 100,000 trade visitors from Russia abroad gather at the main building and interiors event of the year. In 2013, MosBuild will feature producers and distributors from Rus-sia, the CIS, Italy, Spain, Germany, Greece, Portugal, United Kingdom, France, Japan and many other countries. Also present at the exhibition will be 17 national group stands of building and finishing materials manufacturers. Indus-try professionals and visitors will be able to learn about new products, the latest collections and advanced tech-nologies, many of which have been specially designed for the Russian market. They will be shown to the public for the first time at MosBuild.

MosBuild2013: A new format for new opportunities

MosBuild, the international building and interiors event, begins its 19th edition with a new format. In 2013, the event will be staged at central exhibition venues in Moscow. In addition to the significant area of Expocentre, MosBuild will utilise the space of the modern Pavilion 75 at the All-Russian

Exhibition Centre (V.V.C.), which will comfortably accommodate a large number of exhibitors. The building and interior industry’s leading event will be held over two weeks at two renowned exhibi-

tion venues, and for the first time will be divided into three broad thematic sectors.

resentatives of leading retail chains, as well as for archi-tects and designers. The club is growing every year. It is a unique platform for doing business, where profession-als can hold meetings with exhibitors and make use of the business facilities. The club has become a centre of busi-ness communication.

All these and many other events are just a small part of a single, large-scale event. MosBuild, the internation-al building and interiors exhibition, provides a unique opportunity for leading international companies in the construction industry to showcase their achievements, enter the Russian market and build partnerships. Mos-Build is a well-known global brand, and a guarantee of quality and indicator of competitiveness in the Russian construction industry. Business programme. Today, construction is a tool for addressing many tasks, including social, political and economic issues. Presentations of research and success-ful business processes, conferences and forums have be-come an integral part of professional interaction. The MosBuild business programme always generates great interest and attention from industry professionals. In 2013, the new exhibition format is supported by an ex-tensive business programme.The topic of energy efficiency and eco-friendliness in modern construction is one of the priorities in 2013. At the e3 Forum (Environment, Energy, Efficiency), par-ticipants will discuss issues related to this subject. The fo-rum will be attended by senior figures from the world of green construction and architecture, analysts, consult-ants and market experts. The forum entitled ‘Development Issues and Pros-pects of the Building and Finishing Materials and DIY

Market' will bring together representatives of major DIY chains, manufacturers and suppliers of building and fin-ishing materials, and leading market analysts. The 9th International Conference on ‘Technologies for the Design and Construction of Energy Efficient Build-ings (Passive House)’ will be held in a two-day format, with the assistance of the Passive House Institute Russia. The comprehensive programme of business events will continue with a conference entitled ‘Development of the Ceramic Tile Market in Russia: Trends and Prospects’, and an interactive programme on ‘A New Approach to Colour Selection of Paints and Varnishes’. Several other events will take place within the business programme: the awards ceremony of the MosBuild Ar-chitecture & Design Awards (MADA) for young archi-tects and students, and the architectural competition ‘ArchCeramica. Ceramics and Architecture’, as well as lectures and workshops organised by the exhibitors.

Special projects. Re-evaluating values and fundamentally rethinking consumer attitudes to nature is the main task of the 20th century. Given the recent trends in the develop-ment of modern construction exhibition, MosBuild has es-tablished the international e3 Awards for environmentally friendly building and finishing materials with the e3 label.For the first time at the exhibition there will be a special-ised platform for architecture and design students: Mos-Build School. The school will offer master classes by re-nowned architects and designers, educational workshops and training sessions from the best university teachers and construction industry experts. How important is the MosBuild exhibition for you and how long have you participated in it? In the more than 6-year history of working with MosBuild I can say one thing: during this time, the exhibition has be-come a mandatory part of PARKETOFF GROUP’s business calendar for the year. There are virtually no events that are comparable to it in terms of importance for the floor cov-erings market.What innovative developments will the company pre-sent at MosBuild in April?

MosBuild 2013 will be an excellent opportunity to de-velop and strengthen our relationships with partners of PARKETOFF GROUP: we will present to the market two new lines of solid wood flooring – the premium parquet MONTBLANC with unique finish and a width of 180 mm, and a collection of solid wood flooring under the DEKER brand, which combines original decors and affordability for consumers. Also, we will demonstrate six new collections in our KAISER laminated flooring range, which combines the latest designs and technologies in laminated floors.

Domestic building materialsMosstroy-31 CEO Shota Khabelashvili KhabelashviliLast year saw the opening of a new factory by Sibur-Khimprom JSC (Perm), which is one of the suppliers of raw materials to MOSSTROY-31. The opening was attended by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, who commented: ‘Expanded polystyrene is a product much in demand in the market in our country and especially in other countries. We, of course, need to introduce it. Immediately after opening the second phase I will be holding a meeting on modern building materials and expanded polystyrene is one of those, because it cre-

ates fundamentally different energy efficiency, a funda-mentally different situation with heating costs and a host of other things.’ Mr Medvedev personally launched the production line and learnt about advanced manufacturing technologies and the use of expanded polystyrene.In the course of testing the operational strength of Neopor and PSB-S expanded polystyrene boards, MOSSTROY-1 re-ceived certification identifying the longevity of the brands Neopor PSB-S-25F and PSB-S-25F as 100 years.

In late October 2012, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev held a meeting on measures to promote the use of new materials in construction. ‘The feeling is that we are living in the year 1986, under the planned economy,’ said the Prime Minister. At the meeting, it was noted that in the domestic con-struction sector outdated materials are still used univer-sally. However, in recent years, lots of new developments have appeared in this area, which offer new possibilities.‘For example, before developers were limited to creating dark facades. The reason is that Russia has sharp fluctua-tions in temperature. The maximum fluctuation occurs on sunny winter days. During this period, the dark surfaces of the walls heat up to 80 degrees or more, and then just as quickly may cool down,’ explains CAPAROL Marketing

What new products is BRAAS going to present at MosBuild? This year, we are going to present the new products for 2013, brought from the well-known Munich exhibition. One is the latest roof tile collection, for fans of modern style, which is available in a new creative colour range: shades of light beige, blue, turquoise, green, orange and even pink. And followers of tradition will like the Taunas model, which is an analogue of the famous Frankfurt tile, but with better coverage and form: a large wave creates volume and relief.Which products by BRAAS enjoy the greatest demand? The 17-year presence of BRASS-DSK 1 products in the Russian market has shown that the well-known Frankfurt model of roof tile, manufactured in our own factories in Moscow and Krasnodar, is extremely popular among Russians, as well as being the most popular in Europe. This material will be presented in different colours at our stand. How long has your company participated in MosBuild, and what has been the result of this participation? We have participated in MosBuild since 2000. We believe that maintaining the image of BRAAS as a well-known

brand and leader in the domestic roof tile market is the re-sult of our work at the exhibition. What does BRAAS expect from participating in the ex-hibition in 2013? For us, as for most manufacturers and sellers of build-ing materials, the exhibition is the most important place for meetings, and negotiating and concluding contracts. Increasing the brand awareness of BRAAS and the audi-ence’s interest in our products will also be an excellent re-sult of exhibiting.How important is the MosBuild exhibition for promot-ing BRAAS products?Of course, BRAAS, as a leader in the production and sale of roof tiles, couldn’t miss such an important event – the ma-jor international construction exhibition Mosbuild 2013. An original building facade in Austria Is it possible to ‘weave’ a facade? This idea inspired the ar-chitect Michael Strobl to create a modern facade that im-itates fabric.The reconstruction of a centre for refugee children from crisis areas, Clearing House, in Salzburg has shown that the possible applications of ROCKPANEL facade panels from ROCKWOOL are confined only by the limits of archi-tects and designers’ imaginations. Community and pro-tection were the starting ideas for shaping the design concept of this unusual building. In the realisation of the concept the ROCKWOOL panels demonstrated their capa-bilities. The panels are easy to use, flexible and can be cut to the size you want. ‘Because the panels are made from stone wool, they are resistant to weather conditions and high strength,’ says Michael Strobl. The final decision on using ROCKPANEL was made after testing a number of panels, during which the ROCKPANEL performed the best. The Floorliner series includes multiple-use, liquid-absorbing and breathable protective materials, all with adhesive coating. The TEPLEX facade system is a new development by the extruded polystyrene foam manufacturer and is special-ly designed for low-rise cottage construction. In the Italian city of Terni, the brick manufacturing lines of the Wienerberger Group are being upgraded. The new equipment is being supplied by Marcheluzzo Impianti, a de-signer and producer of automation equipment for brick fac-tories since 1971. Marcheluzzo Impianti already worked with Wienerberger in the launch of a new production line in the French town of Durtal, following which it received the new

order. Over a period of three months, Marcheluzzo Impianti supplied a new cutting line and new robotised setting line for the kiln cars. In addition, the company modernised the automatic loading and unloading line for pallets. All the equipment has been successfully tested and meets all the re-quirements of the contract. Wienerberger has, once again, highlighted the reliability and efficiency of the provider.

A lock on a lock At MosBuild, Elbor will present an innovative develop-ment for protection against break-ins: locks with the built-in SMAPT TRAP system. The system blocks the keyhole if an attempt is made to insert a foreign object into the lock. SMAPT TRAP allows you to insert a key, but blocks it and releases it only after completion of two turns. This pre-vents illegal access using master keys, and self-impressing or stack keys that require multiple entries into the keyhole. The lighting designed by Hampton takes the form of classic antique vases and candlesticks, while fitting into modern interiors.Hampton creates design projects for apartments, hotels, restaurants, yachts and airplanes from the United States to China. In 2012, the designer presented a two-storey apart-ment interior at the world-famous Kips Bay Decorator Show House in New York. The bedroom interior was in done in a modern classic style. For the walls a stone-gray colour was chosen, and a lacquer coating applied on top, making the room really shine. The modern decoration and view from the window contrasted with the smooth lines and warm colours of the furniture and draperies in the room. According to Alexa Hampton, she wanted to create an interior that would create a homely coziness and at the same time shine with a modern gloss.At MosBuild, a series of fabrics designed by Hampton will be presented at the stand of Kado, a major supplier of col-lections from well-known international designers.

Countess Isabelle de Borchgrave, the Belgian sculptor and painter, is internationally known for her colourful paint-ings on canvas, ‘trompe-l'oeil’ style works and painted pa-per sculptures. In 2012, Isabelle began to work with the Belgian company ARTE, producing design and decorative materials. The result of the joint work was impressive and the fashionable wallpa-per collection Mariano can be called a re-imagined classic. The Mariano wallpaper collection was inspired by history. The serene collection includes both single-colour designs and regal patterns. The central pattern in the collection is a large damask, drawn by brilliant colours on a matte back-ground with an aged and worn effect. In the collection is a small flower pattern, the inspiration for which was ancient robes. Classic plant patterns are applied on a background with brush strokes of metal paints, creating a play of shad-ows and the effect of depth. The one-colour background design is remarkably similar in texture to a concrete wall, with a fine metallic shine. The plaster effect design has a soft light and blends wonderfully with the damasks in the collection. cators. According to the results of the mortgage lending market, by 1 January 2013, the number of mortgages is-sued stood at 739,183. In total, in 2012, mortgage funds of 307, 65 billion rubles were issue, which is about 1.5 times the level of 2011 in monetary terms.

According to INFOLine, 2012 saw the highest number of new flats built on record, while trend of decreasing aver-age flat size continued.

At the start of 2013 there has been a steady upward trend in house prices. After a drop in housing prices in the first quarter of 2012, the increase in the cost per square me-tre in the second quarter was 9.9 % and this positive trend remained in the third and fourth quarters. At the same time, according to the most modest forecasts by experts, this year, residential property prices in St. Petersburg and Moscow will increase by 5-7 %, while in other Russian cit-ies an increase an increase of up to 10 % is anticipated.

As INFOLine CEO Ivan Fedyakov suggests: “Moscow and St. Petersburg have already experienced peaks in terms of new housing. However, this indicator has great potential for growth in the regions. Accordingly, in the long term, it is the regional markets that will be attractive for manufacturers and suppliers of building and finishing materials.”

At present, the greatest potential for growth is in the mar-kets of the non-capital regions, where the level of satu-ration characteristic of Moscow and St. Petersburg has not yet been reached. Moreover, in the entry of a build-ing and finishing materials producer to regional markets, a key role is played by the sophistication of their logistics planning and availability of regional warehouses. In 2012, this topic was submitted as a separate area for discussion at the forum ‘Development Issues and Prospects of the Building and Finishing Materials and DIY Market’.

In 2013, continuing successful practice, the organisers of the forum are presenting this topic in a new, up-to-date format, viewing it through the lens of building brand architecture and nurturing the loyalty of the consumer to it. On 3 April 2013, in the section ‘Brand architecture in the building and finishing materials market: Is the consumer willing to pay for the brand in DIY?’, leading manufacturers and suppliers of building and finishing materials will share their strategies and discuss key issues in building promotion and sales channels.

In your opinion, is the active development by DIY chains of their own brands a threat or an oppor-tunity for manufacturers?

The experience of Western markets shows that the development of own-label brands goes hand in hand with the availability of DIY chains’ own retail distribution, since vertical integration in produc-tion enables chains to have bigger sales margins, and control of areas largely influences the choice of the end consumer. For the manufacturer, this development will not be a significant threat be-cause, as a rule, the own labels of chains are infe-rior. The product line is created from technologi-cally simple products, by copying the products of leading international manufacturers. Of course, such products attract some consumers, who are looking only for price, and own-label brands do create competition to China. But for sophisticat-ed products, consumers are generally prepared to pay a premium.

How would you evaluate the role of branding in promoting your company’s products in the market?

In the current context of development and informa-tion saturation of the market, the role of branding is constantly growing. Among the latest trends it is worth noting the increase in the number of commu-nication channels and ways of promoting brands. With the information saturation of the market, it is important for companies to carefully choose effec-tive channels of communication and to thoroughly know their consumers.

What problems does your company face in build-ing its brand?

The main problem is logistics. We are building a na-tional brand, but the cost of logistics affects the po-sitioning and opportunities of the brand in different cities. However, our company considers branding an important tool in promoting the company’s prod-ucts in a competitive market. That is why in 2013 we plan to rebrand, in order to tell our customers about the German quality of Plitonit products and to more precise position the brand in the building materials (dry construction mixes) market.

In the run-up to the main event for the DIY market in spring 2013, the business forum ‘Development Issues and Prospects of the Building and Finishing Materials and DIY Market’,

the event’s strategic partner, INFOLine analytical agency, sums up the results of 2012 with the largest international DIY retailers operating in the Russian market.

Ian Strickland, Managing Director of OBI Russia, does not underestimate the strength of Russian players:

’It was another difficult, but nevertheless successful year for OBI Russia. The European economy is still experiencing difficulties and - despite the fact that the economic situation here is quite stable - this is forcing market players, developers and customers to be cautious. On the other hand, although the dominance of foreign players in the DIY market today is a reality, we see that local players are learning very quickly. Competition is increasing. Those who underestimate the strength and future potential of local players are taking a big risk because these players will be a very active part of the market.

However, this year, we once again finished with high indicators and two-digit growth. We view 2013 with optimism. Of course, we are not naive and realise that it will be a difficult year, because the market is evolving and our competitors are also working, growing and becoming stronger. But our experience in Russia, the experience of operating 19 hypermarkets shows that we are competitive and are able to be successful.’

A key vector of development of DIY chains in 2013 will be increasing operational efficiency (optimising logistics systems, establishing and developing direct import

schemes, and developing own label brands and buying alliances), and creating better quality product offerings to retain customer loyalty in the largest cities amidst increasing competition.

Leroy Merlin Marketing Director Alexander Keramidas gives his view on the results of 2012 and the development prospects of the DIY market:

‘By the end of 2012, the market was worth about 900 billion rubles and showed growth of 17 %. These indicators allow us to confidently state that Russia is one of the best European players in the DIY goods segment. As for predictions for 2013, we can identify two key factors of active retail development in this category - or rather, an increase in consumer demand for materials to redecorate people’s existing apartments and houses. Firstly, there is an upward trend in property prices: from 5–7 % in Moscow and major cities to 10 % in regions where incomes are lower. Secondly, at the moment not enough new housing is being built. Each year, almost 500,000 apartments are built. This is only 4% more than the same period in 2011, and they do not cover the current needs of the population. Studies show that over the past five years, 83 % of Russians have redecorated their homes, with the majority (67 %) doing it independently.’

In 2012, Russia experienced growth in property prices and housing construction. As a result of the increase in housing construction and in spending by Russians on refurbishing and decorating their existing houses, Russia ranked second in Europe for the size of its DIY market in monetary terms (more than 30 billion dollars). France came top of the ranking. Furthermore, in 2012, the major international players demonstrated sales growth above 20 %; among Russian companies such growth was achieved only by retailers that operate in the form of supermarkets and hypermar-kets with outdoor construction yards, combining the sale of DIY goods and general construction materials to re-tail customers with corporate sales.

It is already clear that it is a good alternative to outdoor construction mar-kets, which remain the key players in Russia and are our di-rect competitors. The main advantages of drive-in zones are the wide selection and huge amount of goods in stock (much more than the standard shop floor), easy access regardless of weather conditions, and quick process of making a purchase (the whole process can take less than half an hour). We focus on building supplies and dry mixes: according to our research,

The most promising area of business development is regional expansion, which has required the development and adaptation of existing store formats for working in cities and towns with a population from 300,000 people. These cities and towns are now the focus of virtually all the major chains, which are developing the hypermarket, supermarket and building base format. As part of an ambitious programme to enter the market in small and medium-sized cities in central Russia, with investment of up to 15 billion rubles, at the end of January 2013 Leroy Merlin opened its first store in Tver, based on the concept of ‘low prices every day’. At the same time, the leader of the Russian market is actively developing new formats: in 2012 it opened the first Leroy Merlin store with a drive-in zone, where you can enter by car and pay for purchases without leaving the vehicle.

‘The aim of Castorama is to focus on the key product range for the DIY sector. We will not sell pet food or car accessories. A key product range is our priority.

We anticipate that the positive momentum will continue in 2013. At the same time, we have noticed some interesting trends in customer behaviour, confirming the improvement in the market’s prospects. As our European House research (conducted by Kingfisher Group, which includes Castorama) showed, Russians more than residents of other European countries indicated that in the coming year redecorating is a top priority for them, more important than holidays and other family plans. Russians are more willing than other Europeans to invest time and money in

improving their apartments. This year, the majority of Russian families plan to spend on home improvement as much as or more than they did in 2012. It is interesting to note that, in line with the general European trend, Russian consumers are increasingly paying attention to saving energy and introducing special energy-efficient technologies to reduce energy consumption and spending on utilities. It doesn’t need explaining that thermal insulation materials and equipment providing temperature control in residential spaces are most in demand in Russia (compared with other surveyed countries: UK, Spain, Germany, France, Poland, and Turkey).’

Another important trend is the expansion of the largest players from the North-Western District into the Central Region: Mikko Nissinen, Country Director for Russia at Rautakesko, comments: ‘The K-rauta chain has nine stores in St. Petersburg, one each in Yaroslavl, Tula and Kaluga, and two in Moscow. The next store will open in Mytishchi in April 2013. For us, Moscow and Moscow Region is a very attractive market, and our long-term goal is to have in this region about ten stores in total.’ Russian players (Metrika and Petrovich) are also increasingly investing in cities and towns in the Central Federal District.

Retailers are also increasingly developing online shopping and the sales results have exceeded expectations: ‘We did not expect that the online store would be so in demand. Now we are actively working on optimising it,’ says Maxidom CEO Dmitry Sokolov. As for the online sales of Petrovich, in 2012 they grew six-fold to 979 million rubles.

Water park: a lasting union of water and aluminum A water park under construction in the capital of Belarus is an ultra modern solution for translucent facades, the design concept of which aims to maintain the climate of a summer holiday. The project is being implemented through innovative design so-lutions. The translucent facade not only symbolises modern aesthetics, allowing ar-chitects to realise conceptual ideas, but also helps to create a suitable microclimate inside the building, emphasising the properties of air and water. A special microclimate is created in the water park, with high temperature and high humidity. The projected temperature inside the building is +31 °C and humidity no less than 60 %. The first mention of glazing appears in the description of public buildings in Pompeii. New technology for manufac-turing flat glass was developed in France in the 17th cen-tury. It was a real revolution in the glass business. The size of glass could be changed, which led to large windows becoming fashionable. In Russia, window apertures be-gan to increase during the reign of Peter the Great. They helped to ensure good lighting in buildings and offered the chance to enjoy beautiful views of the surroundings. From the beginning to the middle of the 20th century, Soviet Russia built standardised housing with standard wooden windows. The result of this large-scale and cheap process was a catastrophic loss of quality. According to 2012 figures, Russia is still a leader in environmental warm-ing. Russia uses 3–4 times more energy per square of me-tre heated space than in European countries. And this is not happening because Russia has a harsh climate. The main reason is heat loss through the external building enclosures: the walls, roof, doors, and windows. Through them an average of 41 % of heat is lost, and in housing built in the first wave of standardised construction this number is even higher - 70 % heat loss. It is clear that the primary functions of windows – ensur-ing visual comfort, light and fresh air, and reducing heat loss in cold periods and heat transfer during the summer – have been inadequately examined, demanded and op-timised, so that the value of these structures as elements of heating and ventilation systems, or components of a

building’s bioarchitecture, are known only to a narrow cir-cle of specialists.

A modern window is a complicated structure, which is subject to very high requirements. Architects need win-dows that can accentuate the complex architectural form of a building, that let in lots of light, and that comply with all of the necessary building standards. Specialists prefer windows with good thermal insulation, well fitted shut-ters and variable opening mechanisms. Consumers dream of low-cost, energy-saving and noise-reducing windows.

Today, in the domestic market there is no shortage of all kinds of different types of modern windows. Above all, modern windows are notable for their glazing – sealed double-glazing units are used, often filled with inert gas. Even the most simple double-pane glazed windows en-sure greatly reduced heat loss, especially if one of the glass panes is covered with a special film.

Window structures, too, has undergone a number of sig-nificant changes. Profiles often have several sealing pe-rimeters to prevent draughts and urban dust coming penetrating. Today, timber, aluminium, PVC, fibreglass and various combinations of these materials are used to man-ufacture window profiles.

The reliability, durability, ease of use and aesthetics of windows depend on the quality of the window profile. The popularity of different types of window profiles in different countries de-pends on environmental conditions and national preferences.

The boldest projects by architects and designers incorporate an artistic approach and modern technology. From here new trends and directions emerge. The biggest chang-es are happening with the materials being used for building facades. To the traditional wood, brick and stone have been added polymers and glass - people like natural light. Atriums, winter gardens, galleries and swimming pools are transformed into ethereal objects, which inspire and delight.

Timber profilesTimber was and still is a popular material, which has long been used in construction. In this time of rapid technological develop-ment, wood, it would seem, should go by the wayside, in favour of new metal and plastic structures. But consumer market statistics suggest that the demand for tim-ber profiles remains at a high level, even showing an upward trend in sales.

The Moscow architect Totan Kuzembayev, a member of the Russian Union of Architects, comments: ‘Recently, wood, as a material, has become more and more popu-lar. Yes, sometimes wood can be a bit tricky, but thanks to modern technology and innovations in timber processing, wood has become a reliable material, as good as any oth-er. And from an aesthetic and environmental point of view it is harder to find something better than wood.’ Indeed, wood is known as a versatile material. Its natural properties are used for the manufacture of window frames of the highest quality. Windows with timber profiles con-vey all the beauty and warmth of wood, and perfectly fit into any modern interior. Wood is a renewable raw materi-al, so that the production process, while causing damage to nature, is also an effective means of saving it. Windows with timber profiles effectively retain heat in-doors, and sealed double-glazing ensures no draughts. Wood can withstand frosts, temperature drops and, with the variety of treatments and coverings available, it can become like hardened steel. The excellent sound insula-tion properties of wood enable people living in noisy are-as to enjoy silence. The quality of a timber profile strongly depends on the thoroughness of the pre-treatment of the wood: the beam must be perfectly dry and protected from decay by special oil impregnation carried out in a special vacuum chamber.Wood has a porous structure, making it a breathable nat-ural material that provides natural ventilation, eliminat-ing the problem of stagnant air, even with tightly closed shutters. Wood is also lowly electrostatic, so dust does not build up on wooden windows, which is another plus, es-pecially for people with allergies. Last but not least, another indisputable benefit of win-dows with a timber profile is their safety for the environ-ment and humans.

The same view is held by the well-known Finnish archi-tect Professor Olavi Koponen: ‘Today, Finnish society understands that the most important thing in architec-ture is to use eco-friendly materials and energy-saving technologies. And Finns have succeeded in this. In re-cent years, modern Finnish architects have preferred to use wooden structures. Buildings must combine the tra-ditions of wooden architecture and cutting-edge tech-nology. Therefore, the specialised production of wooden structures makes them optimally suitable for resisting any weather conditions. Finland’s climate is very similar to that of Russia. But in Finland we are not afraid to use large win-dow structures with timber profiles even in private con-struction. Quite the contrary, we like lots of light, air and nature, but with warmth and coziness.’Having looked at all the positive features of windows made from a natural material, we turn to its opposite – aluminium.In the 20th century, with the development of new building technologies, there arose an urgent need to replace the old window material. And a new material was found.

Aluminium profilesAluminium is more easily manufactured than wood, and window frames made from it more durable. New technologies make it possible to make this cold material very ‘warm’. Inside an al-uminium window profile are air chambers. The bigger they are the warmer the profile. But the presence of just hollow chambers is insufficient for effective energy conservation. Therefore, al-uminium profiles with insulating bridges are sep-arated into two parts, and the hollow chambers are filled with heat insulating material. It makes most sense to use aluminium frames for large window apertures, stained-glass windows, and glazing of balconies, where the strength of the material is important.

Mikhail Khazanov, an academic of the International Academy of Architecture, comments: ‘Glass and metal is always a good thing. It is modern and stylish. These are the main materials of the future. Remember the Whitney Water Purification Facility and Park designed by Steven Holl Architects. The unique project is made from recycled materials: broken glass, scrap metal and timber process-ing waste.’

Metal windows can be made in any shape and colour, and with different opening methods. The main advantages of windows with aluminium profiles are they have virtual-ly unlimited durability, are high in strength and are light-weight. They are also resistant to deformation, corrosion and other harmful environmental effects. They do not re-quire special care and are more easily repaired compared with other types of windows. Aluminium profiles provide limitless opportunities for architectural and design ideas.

Vladimir Plotkin, a professor at the International Academy of Architecture and board member of MOSA, shares his professional opinion on the possibilities of al-uminium: ‘In general, every building is something new. Modern architecture is related to progress. Something new appears all the time. Of course, it is desirable to be on the crest of progress. But we are experiencing diffi-culties deriving from our economy, and strong skills and

knowledge of working with modern materials and parts. Technological innovations have not yet become in our projects a natural part of our artistic concept. In my work I use wood, aluminium and composite materials. But alu-minium guarantees strength and provides unique forms. For example, one of my projects is the Aeroflot – Russian Airlines office complex, where the shape of the building resembles the company’s logo.’ The Irkutsk architect Andrey Tiguntsev comments: ‘In Siberia, there still exists a certain bias towards the use of ‘glass’ walls, although from an engineering point of view, this has long been nonsense. Simply put, this has been a solvable problem for a long time. But architects often have to deal with assumptions. A positive result is always a reason to celebrate for the architect and the customer.’The opinions of these specialists confirm that modern tim-ber and aluminium profiles have excellent properties and are as good as each other. For example, in the United States, until the mid-eighties, almost half of the windows in the residential buildings be-ing constructed were with aluminium frames. But, grad-ually, aluminium was largely superseded by wood and mixed materials. By the mid-nineties timber windows ac-counted for 50 % of the market and aluminium profiles for about 35 %. According to the figures for the European

window market, consumer demand for timber window profiles is 31.1% and for aluminium and composite mate-rials 30.8 %. In Germany, in 1997, wooden structures ac-counted for 31. 9 % and aluminium 48.2 % of the market. In countries with warmer climates, aluminium is a clear lead-er at 90 %. In Russia, such statistics are not yet recorded. But it is clear that the vast majority of windows in Russia are traditional wooden windows. With regard to the con-struction of new buildings and renovation of apartments, the situation in Russia is similar to the German market.

As is often the case, when we are drawn in by the varie-ty of choice we lose sight of one important aspect direct-ly connected with the window operation: the professional installation of the windows. A good job by professionals will make all the difference, but shoddy work can lead to problems and financial losses.

Our advice is to decide on what you want and consult ex-perts at several window manufacturers to get accurate in-formation at first hand. Heated windowsWhat was once a source of heat loss in a room is now a source of heat. Heated windows have long been available in the European market. A heated window is where the glass is coated with a fine conductive film, which does not affect the transparency of the glass surface. The glass itself is made to the speci-fied size, allowing you to fit it into the frame of almost any manufacturer of PVC profiles. The glass used can be of dif-ferent types: triplex, tinted or armoured, depending on the customer’s wishes. One of the producers of such prod-ucts is the well-known European company Ceyssens.Heated windows are mainly used in residential and public buildings, where the glazing area is large, leading to sig-nificant heat loss. Today, glass mansards and winter gar-dens are becoming increasingly popular, but they present the problem of heating and snow melt. Heated windows easily and cost-effectively address this problem. Heated windows can’t be used across the whole area of the glaz-ing, but only in local areas and through soft infrared radi-ation. Snow and ice on a glass roof is not a problem. The window control system activates them at the right time to remove the frost.

Heated windows can also eliminate condensation on win-dows in swimming pools, water parks and other premis-es with raised humidity. The supply voltage of the glass is variable and based specifically on the required pow-er, which is set using a transformer. The electrical power per square metre ranges from 50 to 600 W and the surface temperature of the inner panel from +15 to +40 C. The glass receives an electric current from 42 to 230 volts. The entire system can be connected to a thermostat, which al-lows you to use the system in the most effective way.In terms of the architectural advantages, electrically heat-ed windows not only create comfortable conditions, but increase the space in a room due to the absence of radi-ators, which are required when using normal windows, and on account of wall thickness, because the glass is much thinner than any wall. Glass walls in a country house give you a fantastic chance to feel harmony with nature. A glass roof allows you to contemplate the beauty of the sky and stars. Did you manage to realise the project that won at MADA? Unfortunately, no, but working on it was very interesting. I applied knowledge gained from literature and interna-tional workshops, and consulted with people who have diminished vision. Much of the information I obtained helped me in working on the project.

Were there any difficulties in implementing the project?During construction the budget was cut significantly. This was a test. We saw it not as a threat but as an opportunity to once again think about what really mattered and to fo-cus on the essence of the project.Does everything work as planned in the project?Projects never work exactly as designed. There is always something unexpected. But La Grajera is, on the whole, the way we had planned. Wine is now being produced there from the second harvest of grapes, and many cours-es, seminars and meetings are held in the building. What energy-saving solutions were applied in the construction of the winery?The building itself, its location and climate, pointed to simple bioclimatic solutions commonly used in tradition-al designs. The production and fermentation halls are located under-ground and covered by a hill. This takes advantage of the thermal resistance of the soil and reduces the need for air conditioning. The sloping roof is covered with vegetation,

What projects are you planning to do in the future?Now I'm studying design of residential houses and hotels, and in the future...we will see.

What percentage of buildings in Poland are built with consideration of the needs of disabled people?All new or reconstructed buildings are built with consid-eration of the needs of people in wheelchairs. This is re-quired by law, and more specifically by the Polish building code. But in the case of people with impaired vision, the law does not say anything specific.

How is the situation in this field changing?Over the past few years, there has been a significant step for-ward, but it relates mainly to the urban population. Hazardous zones, zebra crossings and pavements have been marked.It seems to me that to make the environment more acces-sible for people with impaired vision, we need an interna-tional law and construction certificate, which will take into account the interests of such people. Customers of con-struction work should do projects that take into account the interests of people with disabilities. It is also necessary to develop standardised plans for buildings.

which increases the thermal insulation and better integrates the building into the sur-rounding landscape. The glass surface of the southern facade of the main building is protected by ceramic shields and veranda, which offers protection from the sun in the summer and accumulates heat in the win-ter. The foundation is built from local sand-stone which also contributes to the heat resistance of the building. To heat the air and the wine-making pro-cess, the building uses 100% energy gen-erated by geothermal heat pumps. The system takes advantage of the constant temperature of the Earth, which is about 17 C and remains stable throughout the year, not reacting to changes in the weath-er. The heat exchange between the soil and the winery uses a geothermal gener-ator and heat pumps. In winter, they draw warmth from the winter soil and heat the building and, in summer, on the contrary, they conduct excess heat from the build-ing to the soil. Has the La Grajera winery project par-ticipated in any contests besides MADA? Does it have any other awards? Yes, it has participated in other nation-al and international competitions and won a few awards. The project was award-ed the Architecture and Design Prize at Marmomacc 2012 in Verona (Italy) as an ar-chitectural structure from stone; it received a prize at the A+Awards 2012 in Spain as the best sustainable building; and recently it was selected for an exhibition of the best projects carried out in Rioja over the past 3 years.Has the idea of holding events for young people at La Grajera been achieved?Several public events are held there each year, not only for young people. The events are really successful, attracting many peo-ple. In addition, courses for aspiring farm-ers and winemakers are held at La Grajera, where professional techniques for grape growing are taught. The winery building is very unusual. Does it attract tourists? Wine tourism is important in the Rioja re-gion and its value is growing every year. This area has great potential. The La Grajera win-ery is owned by the regional Government of La Riola and it has been set up as a vineyard, to work with wine and to stage industry events. The government is not promoting it as a tourist destination, but even with-out advertising many people come to look at the building, and among the guests are many architects and winemakers.

Artemy Lebedev: back to school!Talented people, as is known, are talented at everything; it just remains for their abilities to be developed. What kind of interior helps to develop a creative personality? With this question the British Higher School of Art and Design approached Russia's leading creative Artemy Lebedev. The answer to the question was the interior design of a ca-fé at the school by Studio Lebedev.The project starts with a logo in the style of Wassily Kandinsky. The graphic composition, at first glance ab-stract, comprises a conventional cafe image: chairs and ta-bles laden with the simple snacks of students.

The café is located in the open space of a multilevel leisure zone and organically fits into it. It is separated from other spaces only by the colour and texture of the flooring. The café is in many ways similar to a library: improvised counter-library shelves lined with books and above them a board with the latest school news. The round tables in the café are duplicated above by light fittings identical in shape. There is no finish on the ceiling – from top to bot-tom is free space, and all the pipes and air ducts are vis-ible. The design echoes the creative environment of the whole school: a minimum of furniture and maximum of creative accents. Bright napkins on the tables, multicolor-ed mugs, books and flowers create a play of colours, filling the interior with energy. From the ridiculous to the sublime is one step. In deco-rating the walls of the café, the Lebedev Studio designers have overcome this distance. They have covered the walls with playful graffiti in the form of a comic strip, describ-ing the basic principles of design. Now all the café’s cus-tomers know: ‘The essential part of creativity is not being afraid to fail’ and ‘It doesn't matter how it looks, it matters how it works’.After completing the project, Artemy Lebedev made an entry in his LiveJournal account: ‘This is the third in-house café opened by us. The first was opened here in the stu-dio, the second at the head office of Yandex, and now the third at the British Higher School of Art and Design. The school is a notable source of designers. I am really glad that such a place exists in Russia. And even more glad that our café is now operating there. Students now have an op-portunity to cultivate a taste for good coffee in addition to learning about design.’

M ike Shilov’s design style features a whole range of unique interior design solutions with examples and princi-ples of construction, which he will share with participants at the MosBuild School. Any of the designer’s projects begins with planning. The most important is to ‘think about the convenience of the transition – and then to create beauty.’ For example, in apartments with two sides with an entrance in the cen-tre planning was divided into two sections: living room on the right-hand side, private area on the left-hand side. Both zones are separated from the lobby by moveable glass doors, providing excellent sound insulation. In contract to the modern trends to combine incongru-ous elements Mike Shilov chooses subjects for the interi-or ‘that resemble philosophy.’ His favourite colour solution is light grey tones, smoky and cool tints. As a result this is Shilov’s individual style, which can be referred to as ex-pensive minimalism.For example, in one design-project on one wall is hung a mixed media design in white varnish and frosted glass on an ebony decorative carving, and on the other, a Toncelli kitchen made of ebony with a varnished, glossy facade. In different parts of the apartment one encounters marble tiles, mosaics and slabs, but it is all the same type of mar-ble which does not disrupt the harmony of the interior. Michael Shilov also adds that it’s time to tackle the situ-

ation of a lack of light. So on some “gloomy” apartment walls the decision has been taken to cover them with a metallic pigment, similar to old gold: ‘It twinkles, but there is no direct shine’ he explains.

It is completely appropriate to fill an expensively con-ceived interior with the right technical equipment. In Mike Shilov’s ‘intelligent projects’ lights, the entrance bell alarm and even the window blinds can be controlled from the same panel.

The ‘coral’ apartments in the centre of Moscow became one of his well-known interiors. Coral-coloured metallic win-dow frames where the starting point of the project, as they could not be dismantled in case the facade of the old build-ing suffered. As a result the whole colour range of the inte-rior consisted of warm, luminous tints. Coral and the colour of elephant hide are completed by warm nutty tones, the golden shimmer of South-American oak, muffled by the tones of hide and textiles. Stylised objects in the interior took shape among the palette that came into being. The Nanimarquina felt carpet, reflecting each shade of the in-terior from coral to green, became the centre of the pro-ject and its final point. The author believes in the intentions of Divine powers that the carpets would be used in these apartments, as, like Mike Shilov says: ‘happy design pro-jects, like happy marriages, are made in heaven – at least that’s what I think!’

Mike Shilov is a successful designer whose projects are the prototypes that are copied, and whose master-classes are so unfailingly popular that he became one of the teachers for the MosBuild School. His workshop ‘Bathroom Design: How to Avoid Mistakes’ takes place on 17 April 2013 in Expocentre.

In addition to creating projects, Anna Smolyakova, the practising designer and teacher, is involved in photogra-phy, oil painting, studying the laws of colour, and archi-tectonics. The designer uses innovative solutions in her projects and will pass these on to students.The main goal of the project is to create a harmonious un-ion of function and aesthetics, and to achieve maximum expression with minimal means. An example of a creative interior that embodies these principles is the kitchen-din-er for a large family.The kitchen is, above all, about ergonomics. The main thing to consider is the so-called ‘work triangle’ (refrigera-tor, sink and cooker), to ensure that the distance between them is not too great. This project includes all the neces-

The Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut is one of the young-est and most successful creators of modern architecture globally. In 2000, aged 23, Vincent Callebaut graduated from university, receiving the award for the best diploma project. Among his achievements are eight prestigious awards, two monographs and, most importantly, his own architectural practice Vincent Callebaut Architectures, with offices in Belgium and France. But he has gained real recog-nition for his innovative eco architecture: he is the author of more than 40 projects that embody the philosophy of the harmonious coexistence of man and nature.

The green buildings of Vincent Callebaut Architectures are self-sufficient in energy, and minimise the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere; this applies to both private cottages and giant skyscrapers designed to change the face of cities. One of the latest projects of Vincent Callebaut Architectures is Bionic Arch, a sustainable tower in the Taiwanese city of Taichung.

The tallest and most environmentally friendly sky-scraper in TaiwanFor the 100th anniversary of the Taiwan R.O.C the Taichung City Government decided to immortalise the dynamic po-litical, economic, social and cultural development of the country into a 380-metre sustainable tower, a symbol of the modern Republic of Taiwan. The project in Taichung is planned to be realised by 2016, but what is already clear is that the development of the city is surging forward. The Bionic Arch will be located in the centre of the Taichung Gateway Park complex and, with greened fa-cades, will visually become a vertical extension of the park. At the same time, the park’s landscape will not be disrupt-ed due to the hollow arch design of the tower. Although the Bionic Arch will be the tallest building in Taiwan, the compact design of the tower takes up one hectare.

While the Bionic Arch will change the appearance of the city, it will not affect its environment. Vincent Callebaut Architectures has designed a tower that exceeds the strict environmental requirements of the Taiwanese authorities for building projects. The crystalline glass skin of the Bionic Arch contains pho-tovoltaic cells, and along the tower’s vertical axis will be three huge wind turbines, generating enough electricity not only for the tower, but also for the night lighting of the park complex. The numerous plants in the interior and on the facade of the eco tower neutralize the carbon dioxide produced by the building, reducing emissions to almost zero.The Bionic Arch is divided into three functional units. The lower floor will house the Taichung City Development Museum, which will host exhibitions on urbanisation, in-

dustrial progress and other aspects of urban develop-ment. There will also be an area for visitors. Above the museum will be a business space: offices, conference halls and shops. The standout feature of the future landmark of Taiwan is the observation deck (490 m above sea level) un-der a transparent dome, which offers panoramic views of the Taiwan Strait and Taichung Harbour.

Visitors will able to reach the observation deck by a high-speed panoramic lift. Two lifts, each able to carry 48 people, will deliver passengers through the wind turbine directly un-der the dome of the tower. The vertical circulation layout is di-vided into four decentralised cores of staircases and elevators.The same division by sectors is used to provide the fire protection and anti-terrorism security of the tower. event of a threat, the fire source is blocked, giving time to evacuate people. The tower’s network of fire sprinklers au-tomatically begins to tackle the fire.But the main danger for such tall buildings is from natu-ral elements – earthquakes, tornadoes and strong winds have been the cause of a lot of destruction on the island. To combat this, the designers of the Bionic Arch have adopted the ‘Surrender to Win’ principle of the martial art Jiu-Jitsu. The building’s structure contains plastic el-ements that can bend, but do not break under the pres-sure of the elements. The ends of the bearing beams are made of plasticised materials to prevent damage to the walls. The tower is protected from seismic shocks by vis-co-elastic dampers and rigid frames. The aerodynamic shape of the building reduces the effect of strong winds on the structure and directs the gusts to the vertical wind turbines which produce electricity. The Bionic Arch connects the Earth and the sky, and the historical heritage and new traditions of Taichung, but the main idea behind the sustainable tower is the harmonious merging of the modern city with nature. It is a symbol of respect for nature and harmony with the environment.

‘Leaves’, ‘nests’ and ‘waves’ in the Moroccan forestThe sustainable architectural solutions of Vincent Callebaut Architectures are finding application in private projects. One of them is the Kings Forest rest home com-plex which will be built among the forests of Morocco.In an area of 10,000 sqm will be chalets in the shape of leaves, nests and waves, making up the Kings Forest complex.Vincent Callebaut, true to his reputation as a sustainable architect, has used the most environmentally friendly and energy efficient equipment in the project. The chalets’ electricity will be supplied by photovoltaic solar panels and the heating by geothermal units.

At the highest point of the complex will be VIP chalets, similar in shape to leaves. These will be two-storey build-ings, with the upper floor for the most important guests, and the lower floor for staff.According to the design, the outer and the inner space of the ‘leaves’ is highly connected through a transparent mo-bile facade. A balcony runs all around the living areas, with elongated eaves to offer protection from the sun. The living space in the VIP chalet is clearly divided into a night space on the northeast side and a day space on the southeast side. The terraces of the leaf chalets rise up, like the bow of a ship, offering a panoramic towards the mountains.Among the tops of the centuries-old Cedars are chalets that re-semble exotic nests. In addition to comfort, these guest hous-es provide a wonderful sense of soaring above the ground.The inner space is concentrated around a central axis, the lift shaft, around which is a helical staircase. The liv-ing space is divided into several zones. The entrance leads to a lounge on the lower level, above which are two bed-rooms, and on the top level is an observation deck with views of the surrounding area. The interiors of the Nest chalets are decorated in one of four styles: time and history, numbers and mathematics, letters and literature, and arts and crafts. The circular liv-ing areas are developed around and wrapped into a del-icate wooden skin. The skin structure is made of spiraling elements, providing shade and intimacy. The density of the wooden blades encourages views toward the glade, while concealing the private spaces from view. In the western part of the Kings Forest complex are the Wave chalets for families. These buildings at the edge of the forest have one side embedded into the hill, while the other continues the natural landscape of the Kings Forest.

Despite its sophisticated architectural structures, nature remains the main feature of the Kings Forest complex. The centuries-old cedar forest, mountains, and flora and fauna of this untouched part of Morocco will guarantee an un-forgettable stay.

President Vladimir Putin has called Russia’s accession to the WTO the ‘event of the year’: ‘The accession process has gone on for 18 years. But entering without rushing has al-lowed us to achieve special conditions’. As for the difficul-ties, they are actually beneficial, believes the head of state: ‘Russia still lags behind developed economies in terms of both labour productivity and energy efficiency. Often, for price and quality, our products do meet the criteria. WTO accession is a major challenge, and that is why we hope that this will be a major boost to the modernisation of the econ-omy and improvement of the business climate in Russia.’The World Trade Organization was established in 1995 with the aim of the liberalising international trade and regulat-ing trade and political relations among member states. The WTO is responsible for the development and implementa-tion of new trade agreements, and ensures observance by the members of all the agreements signed by the majority of countries and ratified by their parliaments.The protocol on Russia’s accession to the Marrakesh Agreement establishing the WTO came into force on 22 August 2012. After 18 years of negotiations, Russia be-came the 156th member of the WTO. The organisation now accounts for about 95 % of world trade. Some representatives of the Russian business communi-ty see risks, such as a sharp decline in import and export

Moscow – a post-industrial city

As Sergei Sobyanin stressed, the ideology of Moscow must change. And this process has already begun.‘Instead of creating separate pockets of prosperity we need to address the quality of life of the city as a whole,’Sobyanin noted, adding that this is the task of the authorities. To the credit of the Moscow Government, it cannot be accused of inaction. At the same time, all the changes must happen in close contact with residents, and the bureaucratic structure itself should become more open.

The main challenge remains avoiding transport collapse. To address this, the capital’s mayor said that serious meas-ures had to be taken to revise relations with investors and to dissolve hundreds of contracts for the construction of buildings that would worsen an already problematic situ-ation on the roads.Despite all the difficulties, the amounts gained from private investors grew nearly a quarter compared with the previ-ous year’s figures. ‘As a result, the volume of investment in

Urban Group has put up for sale four unusual apartments in the City Quays residential complex. The apartments are situat-ed on a stone arched bridge over one of two artificial canals.The design of the City Quays project deserves attention. The concept is to use the river landscape and a system of artificial canals. Time has shown that this (the transition to a market economy) is a complicated but achievable task. Before you today is a rapidly developing megapolis. I believe that our expe-rience deserves attention, and we will also learn from our colleagues in the future,” commented the mayor. ‘And if people now live in our city in order to work, in the near future this principle should be transformed to the opposite: to work here is necessary to live life fully,’ said Vladimir Mau, announcing the new strategy of the Moscow authorities.
