The country estate was established in the 18th century and belonged to various noblemen. It was nationalised in 1918 and used primarily as a sanatorium. Vladimir Lenin convalesced there after the assassination attempt on him in 1918 and continued to spend more and more time there. Stroll through Cathedral Square – a breathtaking architectural ensemble from the 15th to 17th centuries, the Tsar’s Bell and Cannon, political and governmental buildings and the Kremlin walls and towers. Visit the State Armoury Museum housing a unique collection of the tsars’ crown jewels, gems, thrones, Fabergé Eggs and coronation robes. In the afternoon you have a tour of some of the most spectacular stations of the Moscow Metro. Go underground for a grand display of marble, mosaics, chandeliers and sculpture. Stroll through the Arbat pedestrian zone with its many cafes and souvenir shops. Overnight Moscow. B Day 4 Tue. Moscow to St. Petersburg After breakfast, check out of your hotel for a visit to the State Tretyakov Art Gallery to view its collection of art that traces Russian culture from the 11th to 19th centuries. This afternoon you will be transferred to the railway station to join your Sapsan train departing at 16:30 for your 4-hour journey to St. Petersburg. Overnight St. Petersburg. B Day 5 Wed. St. Petersburg Your tour will introduce you to the highlights of this beautiful northern city. Drive along fashionable Nevsky Prospekt, the main thoroughfare of St. Petersburg, lined with 18th century palaces, shops and restaurants. See magnificent Palace Square, the third largest in the world, flanked by the Triumphal Arch, General Staff building and Winter Palace complex. In the afternoon visit Peter & Paul Fortress, the site chosen by Peter the Great in 1703 as the foundation of St. Petersburg. All the Russian emperors since Peter the Great are buried in Peter & Paul Cathedral, including the last Tsar, Nicholas II and his family. Overnight St. Petersburg. B Day 6 Thu. St. Petersburg After breakfast, visit the State Hermitage Museum. Housed in five buildings on the Neva Embankment, the Museum boasts a collection of more than 3 million items. St. Petersburg Travel one way by hydrofoil to the Gulf of Finland to visit Peterhof Palace and its magnificent gardens (May to Sep only). It was commissioned by Peter the Great as a summer palace to rival Versailles. From October to April, you drive to the town of Pushkin, known as Tsars’ Village, to visit Catherine’s Palace, one of the finest examples of Russian Baroque architecture. Overnight St. Petersburg.
