Thursday, 26th April
Dear Parents and Carers,
It was wonderful to see so many of our
students, parents and staff at yesterday’s
ANZAC Day parade at Port Douglas. We
counted 27 students which is an amazing
turn out for our school. Thank you to eve-
ryone who made the effort to come over,
we were very proud of you all. Thank you
also to our leaders who ran our own pre-
ANZAC Day service on Tuesday.
We have a number of staff out today,
attending a workshop at Wonga Beach
State School about reading disorders. Miss
Michelle is also away for the week and Mr
Adrian will be running our HPE classes. We
also have Alby running some rugby league
drills with our students for a few weeks.
On Monday of next week we have a few
Cowboys players joining us at first lunch
for a bit of a kick around too.
Tomorrow our 9-12 year old cross country
runners will be representing our school at
the District Cross Country at Port Douglas
and we wish them all the best for the day.
It should be a spectacular day on the
beach, if today is anything to go by. Con-
gratulations to all of our students who
made it to this level.
Tomorrow we also welcome teachers from Pormpuraaw State School who are coming along to observe how our teachers run their daily literacy and numeracy consoli-dations.
Next Thursday we have the Tour de Cure
visiting to present a 25 minute Be Fit-Be
Healthy-Be Happy program to our stu-
dents. All students will also receive a bag
of goodies to help reinforce the Be Fit, Be
Healthy, Be Happy message. Tour De Cure
is a cycling foundation of ordinary people
who care passionately about curing can-
cer. The tours and events across Australia
raise vital funds for world-class cancer pro-
jects. Since its beginning in 2007, Tour de
Cure has raised over $35m towards cancer
research. This year’s tour is from 27th April
to 5th May and their route from Mackay to
Cape Tribulation and back to Cairns takes
the riders past our school. Our school cap-
tains and leaders are organising some wel-
come posters for the day and we are hop-
ing to have our whole school out to wel-
come the riders into our school. To help
raise some valuable funds for Tour de
Cure, Mrs Swan has organised a Mufti Day
on Tuesday of next week. This is a day
where students come dressed in regular
clothes and give a gold coin donation to a
charity. Mrs Swan’s husband, Chris, is go-
ing to cook up a sausage sizzle at first
lunch and our student council are going to
be selling ice cups. Ice cups will be the usu-
al $1 and the sausage sizzle will be a gold
coin donation of your choice. All money
raised will be presented to the Tour de
Cure riders on Thursday by our school cap-
tains. Please support this valuable fund
raiser.
Our Interschool Spelling Bee will now be
held on Tuesday 29th May in our assembly
room from 9am to 11am. All parents and
family members are welcome to come and
watch our students compete.
Thank you everyone for all of your support
in my return to work this week. It has been
a difficult time for me and I really do ap-
preciate it.
Kind regards,
Randal Smith
