Second Sunday of Advent December 4, 2011

Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.

— Mark 1:3

From the Pastor’s Desk — Fr. Maurice I write this on the bus going back to Jerusalem from Bethlehem. If the traditional English Christmas carol were written today, it would be “Oh bustling city …” instead of “Oh little town of Bethlehem”! Times change, and the world keeps moving. By the time you read this, I will be back at work at Most Holy Trinity. My time here in the Holy Land has been profound and moving. I have witnessed oppression and injustice firsthand, and I have also experienced hope and faith. I helped plant olive trees in Daher’s farm at Tent of the Nations. I was privileged to be in the village of Susya, where our presence at the right moment helped prevent the Israeli army from destroying a family’s tent for the second time in two days. I heard the testimony of a former Israeli soldier who has joined an organization called “Breaking the Silence” and now works for peace and understanding between all the residents of the land, Israeli and Palestinian, Jewish, Muslim, and Christian. In this weekend’s Gospel reading, we hear John the Baptist crying out in the wilderness to make a highway for the Lord. Well, there is now a highway between Bethlehem and Jerusalem, but there are also checkpoints. I just had to dismount from the bus with all the other passengers to have my I.D. checked. Today’s wait was not too long, no more than 15 minutes. Sometimes it is hours. I think of my own life as well, and of my Church, of our dear Church that I love so much. I realize how many times I put checkpoints, road blocks in the lives of others, in the lives of those that we all love. I will use part of this time of Advent as an opportunity to reflect on the times I put obstacles in the path of other people, of the times when I hinder—as an individual or as a representative of the Church—people coming closer to our God. As we prepare for God coming near to us in our history and in our lives, may we also come closer to God and help others to do the same.

Marana tha! Come, Lord Jesus!

A veces dura horas.

¡Marana tha! ¡Ven, Señor Jesús!

Second Sunday of Advent Reflection by Kristi Haas

In the beginning of this Texas winter, wearing a coat of camel hair does not sound like the worst idea. But eating locusts and wild honey? Traveling through the desert? John the Baptist was a strange guy. But there was something about John. People came to him to the desert from farms, towns, and even the city of Jerusalem. They “were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins” (Mk 1:5). Why? Sometimes, I just want to make some spiritual hot chocolate and fall asleep like a lamb in God’s arms. But another part of me is intrigued. I want to listen to that voice that proclaims “the glory of the Lord shall be revealed” (Is 40:5). I want to know how to “prepare the way of the Lord” and “make straight his paths” (Mk 1:3). I want to know why “the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the elements will be dissolved by fire,” and I really want to see “new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells” (1 Pt 3:10, 13). Who is the God who is coming? He is the infant who came to Bethlehem centuries ago. He is our life, our hope, and our Guest who arrives every day. He is the king who will come again to gather what he has planted. He is like an all-powerful mother who nurses us while carrying us to a new place, better than we could have imagined. Like a child, we can turn away, try to eat other things like hair, glasses, and toys, but our Lord knows that He is our true food. God gazes upon us in love, like a mother gazes on her child. I want to gaze back into God’s loving and merciful eyes. But that means going out into the desert, like the people of the farms, towns, and cities did when they heard of John the Baptist. That means turning away from all the flashy things along the way, and asking the Lord to show me the deserts in my life. Lord, where do you long to shine on me in radiant beauty? What do you want me to leave behind? Where in my heart should I sit and wait for you, unsure where you will take me or how? When we remember our longing for God this Advent, let us discover that God longs for us infinitely more. And let us prepare to respond as his beloved people: “Since you await these things, be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him, at peace” (2 Pt 3:14).
