DESCRIPTION

Vancouver, BC, has enjoyed top ranking as the Economist Intelligence Unit's number one most liveable city in the past ten years, but in the EIU's annual survey published in last month in August, Melbourne, Australia, topped the list. In a related but smaller separate survey, Monocle magazine bestowed their number one ranking to Helsinki in their publication's Quality of Life Top 25 most liveable cities survey. That report was published in Monocle's July/Aug 2011 issue. Here's an at-a-glance look at the EIU's top 10 in the attached infographic.

For the first time since the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) surveyed the world’s most liveable cities, Vancouver has lost its number one status in a decade. Melbourne, Australia, has earned the top position in this year’s 2011 survey. By comparison, Monocle’s annual Quality of Life survey bestowed the number one spot to Helsinki which is EIU’s number 7.

The EIU ranks Melbourne for general conditions out of 140 cities which are assessed on stability, health care, culture and entertainment, education, and infrastructure.

Monocle’s high scoring for Helsinki is based on a city that keeps “bettering itself’ in the annual Quality of Life Top 25 liveable cities survey published July / Aug 2011.
