Restoration

In 2014 we will be

celebrating the Centenni-

al of Immaculate Con-

ception Ukrainian Catho-

lic Parish. The corner-

stone of our first Church

in Hamtramck was

blessed on December 25,

1913, and the building

was completed and

blessed in 1914. There-

fore, it is fitting for us to

celebrate this very im-

portant milestone of

our Ukrainian-America

Community in 2014. The

celebration banquet will

be held on June 8th,

2014. Please reserve this

date in your calendar.

In November of 2011,

we began the First

Phase of a major resto-

ration project focused

on our Church. The cost

of the project to date has

been $305,000.

To preserve Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic

Church, its beautiful icons, murals, paintings, and the artistry

of Mr. Mychajlo Dmytrenko is the responsibility of our Pa-

rishioners and our Detroit Ukrainian- American community.

Working together, we will secure our beautiful Church for

future generations. Here they will be baptized, have their first

communion, have their marriage blessed, and receive their

final blessing at the time appointed by God.

At this time, we are reinitiating the fundraising campaign for

the Second Phase of the IC Church restoration project. We

ask you to once again be zealous and generous in your

donations. The estimated cost of this next phase is $300,000.

It is a significant cost. As was the case with the first phase of

this project, it is achievable if we all do our part.

sacrifice, and help us restore our beautiful Church. This will

help to preserve a historic place of worship for future genera-

tions of Ukrainian-American families in the metropolitan

Detroit area.

What is the Holy Eucharist?

The Holy Eucharist is a sacrament and a sacrifice. In the Holy Eucharist, under

the appearances of bread and wine, the Lord Christ is contained, offered, and

received.

a.The whole Christ is really, truly, and substantially present in the Holy Eucha-

rist. We use the words "really, truly, and substantially" to describe Christ's pres-

ence in the Holy Eucharist in order to distinguish Our Lord's teaching from that

of mere men who falsely teach that the Holy Eucharist is only a sign or figure of

Christ, or that He is present only by His power.

b. All Christians, with but few minor exceptions, held the true doctrine of the

Real Presence from the time of Christ until the Protestant Revolution in the six-

teenth century.

c. The word "Eucharist" means "Thanksgiving."

2. When did Christ institute the Holy Eucharist?

Christ instituted the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper, the night before He died.

a. About a year before the Last Supper Our Lord promised to give us the Holy Eucharist. This promise is relat-

ed in the sixth chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John. The fulfillment of this promise took place at the

Last Supper.

3. Who were present when Our Lord instituted the Holy Eucharist?

When Our Lord instituted the Holy Eucharist the apostles were present.

4. How did Christ institute the Holy Eucharist?

Christ instituted the Holy Eucharist in this way: He took bread, blessed and broke it, and giving it to His apos-

tles, said: "Take and eat; this is My body;" then He took a cup of wine, blessed it, and giving it to them, said:

"All of you drink of this; for this is My blood of the new covenant which is being shed for many unto the for-

giveness of sins;" finally, He gave His apostles the commission: "Do this in remembrance of Me."

a.What happened when Our Lord said: "This is My body . . . this is My blood"? When Our Lord said, "This is

My body," the entire substance of the bread was changed into His body; and when He said, "This is My

blood," the entire substance of the wine was changed into His blood.

b. Christ could not have used clearer, more explicit words than "This is My body." He did not say, "This is a

sign of My body," or "This represents My body," but, "This is My body." Catholics take Christ at His word

because He is the omnipotent God. On His word they know that the Holy Eucharist is the body and blood of

Christ.

5. Did anything of the bread and wine remain after their substance had been changed into Our Lord's

body and blood?

After the substance of the bread and wine had been changed into Our Lord's body and blood, there remained

only the appearances of bread and wine.

a. Because the appearances of bread and wine remain in the Holy Eucharist, we cannot see Christ with our

bodily eyes in this sacrament. We do see Him, however, with the eyes of faith. Our bodily eyes, moreover, do

not deceive us when they see the appearances of bread and wine for these appearances really remain after the

Consecration of the Mass.

6. What do we mean by the appearances of bread and wine?

By the appearances of bread and wine we mean their color, taste, weight, shape, and whatever else appears to

the senses.

7. What is the change of the entire substance of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ

called?

The change of the entire substance of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ is called Transub-

stantiation.

8. Is Jesus Christ whole and entire both under the appearances of bread and under the appearances of

wine?

Jesus Christ is whole and entire both under the appearances of bread and under the appearances of wine.

a. We know that Christ is whole and entire under both appearances because, "Christ having risen from the

dead, dies now no more" (Romans 6:9). Because Christ cannot die, His blood must remain united always to

His body, and His soul to both. The divinity of Christ, moreover, always remains united to His body and blood

and soul because He is God made man.

b.The whole Christ is present under each part of the sacred appearances and remains present as long as the sa-

cred appearances remain.

9. How was Our Lord able to change bread and wine into His body and blood?

Our Lord was able to change bread and wine into His body and blood by His almighty power

God, who created all things from nothing, who fed the five thousand with five loaves, who changed water into

wine instantaneously, who raised the dead to life, can change bread and wine into the body and blood of

Christ. Although the Holy Eucharist is a great mystery, and consequently beyond human understanding, the

principles of sound reason can show that this great gift is not impossible by the power of God.

10. Does this change of bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ continue to be made in the

Church?

This change of bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ continues to be made in the Church by Jesus

Christ, through the ministry of His priests.

a. Only ordained priests have the power of changing bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. When

they consecrate, they act in the person of Christ, through the power received in the sacrament of Holy Orders.

b. When did Christ give His priests the power to change bread and wine into His body and blood?

Christ gave His priests the power to change bread and wine into His body and blood when He made the apos-

tles priests at the Last Supper by saying to them: "Do this in remembrance of Me."

11. How do priests exercise their power to change bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ?

Priests exercise their power to change bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ by repeating at the

Consecration of the Mass the words of Christ: "This is My body . . . this is the Cup of My blood."

12. Why does Christ give us His own body and blood in the Holy Eucharist?

Christ gives us His own body and blood in the Holy Eucharist: first, to be offered as a sacrifice commemorat-

ing and renewing for all time the sacrifice of the cross; second, to be received by the faithful in Holy Com-

munion; third, to remain ever on our altars as the proof of His love for us, and to be worshipped by us.

НЕОБХІДНІСТЬ СВЯТОГО ПРИЧАСТЯ

Найсвятіша Євхаристія є поживою для нашої душі, тому св.

Причастя є обов'язковим засобом для досягнення у цьому

житті духовної досконалості і святості, а після смерті —

вічного життя.

Від споживання Найсв. Євхаристії залежить майбутнє життя

душі. Христос каже: "Якщо не споживатимете тіло Чоловічого

Сина й не питимете його Кров, не матимете життя в собі.

Хто тіло моє їсть і кров мою п'є, той живе життям

вічним" (Йоан б, 54, 56). Св. Причастя є необхідною умовою

досягнення святості і вічного життя. Без св. Причастя не можна

мати здорової душі.

Досконалим людям св. Причастя необхідне для того, щоб вони

зростали в досконалості, недосконалим — щоб ставали

досконалими; сильним св. Причастя необхідне, щоб не

ослабнути, слабим — щоб зміцніти.

Перші християни були святими тому, що причащалися

щоденно. Усі Святі теж намагалися причащатися

якнайчастіше.

Однак, часте приймання св. Причастя саме по собі ще не є

ознакою святості або нагородою за осягнену святість.

Усвідомлення того, що, навіть відбувши щиру покуту за гріхи,

ми не є достойними Господнього Тіла, не повинне стримувати

нас від прийняття св. Причастя. Разом із тим і найсвятішІ повинні перед св. Причастям визнати:

"Господи, я не достойний" (св. Фр. Сал.). Тільки Христос був би достойним приймати св. Причастя, бо

Бога може достойно прийняти лише Бог (св. Альф.). Але ж Христос установив св. Причастя не для

Ангелів, а для людей. Наші щоденні гріхи не повинні стримувати нас від частого приймання св.

Причастя, навпаки, вони повинні нас заохочувати до цього, щоб ми ставали чистішими,

досконалішими, бо св. Причастя очищає нас від легких гріхів і послаблює злі нахили і прагнення. Ми

приймаємо Христа не для того, щоб Його освятити, а щоб Він освятив нас (св. Бонав.). Не повинна нас

лякати і відсутність спокою і задоволення після прийняття св. Причастя. Нерозумно вчинила б людина,

яка, вмираючи від голоду, відмовилась би від хліба тільки тому, що до нього не дали меду (св. Ігн.

Лой.). Святі вважають, що краще причащатися з меншою побожністю, аніж зовсім відмовитись від св.

Причастя. Апостольська Столиця спонукає нас навіть до щоденного приймання св. Причастя.

Той, хто протягом довгого часу легковажно відмовляється від св. Причастя, наражає свою душу на

неминучу загибель.

До таких людей, звичайно, не можна віднести святих, які протягом довгих років не приймали св.

Причастя, бо перебували, напр., в пустині, як св. Марія з Єгипту, св. Павло і св. Антоній. Св. Дух, який

спонукав їх до самотності, винагороджував їх за все, що вони втратили через неможливість приймання

Пресв. Євхаристії (Бенед. XIV). Однак, більша частина цих Святих прийняла св. Причастя перед

смертю.

Кожний, хто не може прийняти св. Причастя, зобов'язаний прийняти його щонайменше душевно,

тобто він повинен мати гаряче бажання прийняти св. Причастя, і повинен його дійсно прийняти, як

тільки трапиться для цього нагода (св. Тома з Акв.).

Ми зобов'язані, під страхом тяжкого гріха, причащатися хоча б раз у рік, а саме перед Великоднем; а

також під час важкої хвороби.

Перші християни причащалися щодня. Пізніше, згідно з розпорядженням папи Фабіяна (+250),

повинні були приступати до св. Причастя хоча б під час трьох головних свят у році. У середні віки

багато християн легковажно ставилися до обов'язку прийняття св. Причастя — вони не приймали його

по кілька років. Тому у 1215 р. Церква розпорядилася, щоб кожний християнин, як тільки прийде до

вживання розуму, причащався хоча б раз у рік — перед Великоднем; того, хто легковажить це

розпорядження, після смерті позбавляють права на християнський похорон.

Ми зобов'язані приймати св. Причастя і під час важкої хвороби. Важкохворий може говорити до

Христа, як учні в Єммаусі: "Зістанься з нами, бо вже надвечір, і день уже похилився" (Лук. 24, 29), а,

отримавши св. Причастя, може сказати, як старець Симеон: "Нині, Владико, можеш відпустити слугу

твого за твоїм словом у мирі, бо мої очі бачили твоє спасіння" (Лук. 2, 29). Тому св. Причастя

називається Напуттям, тобто покріпленням на останню путь. Однак св. Причастя не вділюється тим,

хто не може його спожити або хто віддав би його назад. Якщо важка хвороба триває довго, хворому

слід причащатися якнайчастіше. Можна вділяти св. Причастя і важкохворим дітям від 7 років життя,

навіть якщо вони до цього часу ще не приступали до сповіді і до св. Причастя. Але перед тим

душпастир повинен навчити їх головних правд віри і розповісти про уділювані ним св. Тайни (Венед.

XIV).

Душпастирі повинні заохочувати вірних до частого, навіть щоденного приймання св. Причастя, бо

душі, як і тілу, потрібна щодення пожива (Рим. Кат.).

Діти зобов'язані приступати до св. Причастя, прийшовши до уживання розуму (Пій X, 9 серпня 1910).

Вважається, що людина починає думати на 7 році життя. Римський Катехизм каже, що діти можуть

приступати до св. Причастя тоді коли навчаться відрізняти небесну поживу від земної і коли можна

бути впевненим, що вони приймуть св. Причастя з належною побожністю. Тому в різних країнах

встановлено різний вік для тих, хто причащається вперше: в Австрії — 9 років, у Баварії — 11 років, у

Франції — 12. Але духовно зрілі діти і діти, батьки яких приділяють особливу увагу релігійному

вихованню в сім'ї, можуть бути допущені до св. Причастя раніше. Папа Пій X вказав, що для першого

св. Причастя не є обов'язковим досконале знання релігійних правд. Вистачить знання головних правд

віри, усвідомлення різниці між св. Причастям і земною поживою і належна шана для св. Причастя.

Духовної зрілості, якої вистачає для прийняття Таїнства Покаяння, вистачає і для прийняття св.

Причастя. Тому св. Причастя приймається тоді, коли й Таїнство Покаяння.

Церква прагне, щоб ми якнайчастіше приступали до св. Причастя.

На Тридентському Соборі (1563) було висловлене бажання, щоб вірні причащалися під час кожної

Служби Божої не лише духом, але й справді, і тим самим більше користали з плодів св. Літургії.

Щоденне св. Причастя повинно практикуватися в християнських товариствах, у духовних семінаріях і

християнських виховних закладах. Слід пам'ятати, що св. Причастя не є нагородою за чесноти, св.

Причастя — це засіб проти гріхів. За його допомогою звільнимося від наших щоденних помилок,

убережемо себе від важких гріхів. Вірні, які бажають причащатися частіше, повинні без найменшого

страху під час сповіді просити священика дозволу на щоденне Причастя. Але, зрозуміло, що особи, які

частіше причащаються, повинні певний час присвятити приготуванню до св. Причастя і подяці.
