Editors Letter

Wow it has really been an exciting month!

We have had all sorts of events to attend including spinning, main

circuit, karting, dirt oval and much more!

The highlight has to be the 2 events we attended over the last weekend of the month which will be featured in next months magazine - these being

the two national events in PE with both Dirt Oval and Karting taking

centre stage.

We are a little disapointed that we have been let down by our spinning

corespondent, we were really hoping to reach out to a new facet in our

motorsport community. Hopefully we will be able to get some coverage

from these events in the future.

This month seems to be just as full of action, with some big events heading

to the eastern cape. We can’t wait to bring you all the action once again.

Thanks to our supporters , without you this would all be pointless.

Happy Reading!

RALLY

The long wait is over, competitors and officials awoke to a perfect sunny day

with a slight breeze, adrenalin was pumping, as the dawn had broken on the

first round of the championship.

An exciting field of 18 entries gathered at the Hunters Retreat Hotel after been

out since daybreak (6am) doing a recce of the route.

Page 7: Motorsport EC May 2016 issue 11

Motorsport EC | May 2016 | 7

RALLY

The first round of the championship was blessed with 4 first time competitors and one experienced navigator in Martin Kliengeld (A dedicated teacher with Rally on his sleeve) sitting

next to a novice driver.

We had the opportunity to welcome the new competitors Deon Engels – who is still a school boy - navigated by Martin. The youngest competitor was, 16 year old “Shakin Stevens” Neill Keeton / Ryle Murray all the way from

Bathurst.

We also welcomed the pair of Andrew Dillion / Justin Van

Acker. All the way from

Bloemfontein were the pair of Jacques Du Toit / Ronald Rens with Malema as their Chief Engineer running the team with an iron fist

and a smoking pipe.

We were also graced with the presence of 2 crews who made the trip all the way from Cape Town, in Ismaeel Davids/ Yusuf Ganief who raced in the final round in 2015

and vowed to be back in 2016.

True to his word he was back and they have now joined our club to

compete in the whole 2016 championship. Ismaeel was joined

by his brother Faizel Davids navigated by Ridwaan Nordien

making up their 2 car team.

Page 8: Motorsport EC May 2016 issue 11

RALLY

Hopefully we are privileged enough to have all 6 of the new teams for

the complete 2016 season.

Johan Viljoen “Dominee” navigated by his passionate

daughter Juane led the field of 18 cars away as current champions at 9.30am to the first of 2 tar stages at

Parsons Green.

The rubber was laid down by Mr. Rally Brian Heine / Keith Heine taking the first stage by a mere 3 seconds from the ever improving “Red bull” Darren Murphy who is kept in check by his Dad Gavin. They were followed by “Sideways”

Iddo Steyn/ “Grandpa “Mark

Irvine. We lost Mr. Consistent Neels Vosloo AND Motor mouth Kevin Futcher with a damaged

steering.

Stage 2 was a re run of Stage 1 and was again won by Brain / Keith

improving their stage time by 5 seconds and were followed by

super quick Ross Bartle 1 sec off and in 3rd was Darren / Gavin and Iddo / Mark sharing the same time. We also lost our “Models” all lady team of Melissa Heyman / Anza

Muller with a broken gearbox.

The rally then moved out to the Uitenhage area next to the VW Factory for the first dirt stage at

Page 9: Motorsport EC May 2016 issue 11

RALLY

Jaghtvlagte to test the crews over 20 km stage.

This is where we saw the fight hot up for overall honors as the Sexy

VW Polo of Rikus Schmidt/ Sherilee Pieterse took the stage by 3 seconds from Brian Heine / Keith Heine followed by Ross Bartle/Mathew Kohler (another import

from Cape Town “Welcome”). Unfortunately the stage took its toll on Darren Murphy who developed gearbox problems dropping him down the leader board after being

2nd Overall early on.

Another casualty from the leader board was Iddo Steyn / Mark Irvine who had

to withdraw from the event with a Diff / Side shaft failure. We also lost our Farmers from Bloemfontein on the way to stage 3 with a blown head gasket, but they will be back.

Ruan Gerber / Roxanne Bartle unfortunately fell out due to a broken pulley on their Golf.

Stage 4 moved to Mission road behind the PEOTR racetrack which was once again taken by Rikus Schmidt / Sherilee Pieterse by 10 seconds ahead of Brian and Keith moving them to a mere 7 seconds

off of the lead of the rally.

Third place was now filled by our defending champion Johan / Juane. We also had our visitor from Cape

RALLY

Town Ismaeel Davids suffering with gearbox problems now

running with 3 gears – 3rd, 4th, and 5th – and fighting hard finishing the stage with the 7th fastest time.

Ismaeel continued fighting on, losing a further 2 gears over stages 5 and six and having to finish the

last 2 short stages with one gear.

Stage 5 and 6 were a re run of stage

3 and 4 and the fight was still on with Rikus taking the stages from Brian and going into a 10 second lead on stage 5 and then winning

again in stage 6 by a further 10 seconds stretching his lead to 20

seconds.

Third in stage 5 was Johan who held on to his 3rd overall and then decided to remove the right rear

wheel off his car in Stage 6 to

Page 11: Motorsport EC May 2016 issue 11

finish a creditable 8th overall and 3rd in class S3 under the Super

Rally rules. Stage 6 saw “Mr. Consistent Snr” Jan Vosloo in a 1300 Yaris sneak quietly into 3rd

place.

Unfortunately Darren and Gavin Murphy still suffering with gearbox problems slipped down to 4th and then on stage 6 suffered a puncture 3km’s into the 17 km stage which resulted in the crew falling down to 5th overall and 2nd in S3 class, a great result after all his dramas on the event including his Dad feeling

ill towards the end of the event.

Stage 7 and 8 was held at the PE Oval consisting of 2 short stages for the crowds. The stages were again won by Rikus and Sherilee ahead of

Brian and Keith by 1 and 7 seconds respectively, to take the lead by 28

seconds overall.

The drama was not over, however, as upon final scoring Rikus and Sherilee had committed a cardinal

sin, by booking into a stage 1 minute early and collecting a 1 minute penalty. This handed “Mr. Rally” Brian and Keith Heine the

overall win by 32 seconds.

3rd Overall on the day with a consistent run was Jan Vosloo/ Ria Jansen who also took the class S1 win followed by a great result from

“1 gear” Ismaeel Davids / Yusuf Ganief 4th Overall and 2nd in class

S2.

5th Overall and 2nd in class S3 was

Struggling Darren and Gavin Murphy, and 6th Overall and 3rd in Class S2 were our other Cape Town Entry of Faizel Davids/Ridwaan Nordien who had a smooth event. Special mention must go to Neill Keaton/ Ryle Murray for a great top 10 finish in their first event 9th

Overall and 2nd class S1.

10th Overall and 3rd Class S1 were Deon Engels another Newcomer

navigated by Martin Kliengeld followed by Andrew Dillion/Justin

Van Acker in 12th Overall and 4th in class S1. Congrats to all of you for bringing it over the line and

scoring championship points.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the

competitors and officials on a great event as we look forward to

having you all at our next event on the 11th June at the Bay West Mall where we will introduce Bay West Mall as our new sponsor and New

DIRT

OVAL

02 April emerged as a date never to be forgotten in Port Elizabeth. Both dirt oval clubs, – Victory and PEOTR - for the first time ever, ran race

meetings at the same time.

Victory Raceway had to be satisfied with an abnormally small crowd, but racing in the 1660, Super 6 and AMS classes was first class.

Junior Hot Rod/ Beginners Class

The combined Beginners and Junior Hot Rod Class had 4 starters in the Final. Letitia Renison, in her little Mini, proudly did the lap of honour with the chequered flag after taking victory, while young Damon Miles,

Page 17: Motorsport EC May 2016 issue 11

Motorsport EC | May 2016 | 17

won the JHR class. Zandri Weitz did not compete in the Final and

Andre van Tonder and Ruhan Terblanche ended with equal points

for the evening.

1660 Class

8 Cars lined up on the grid for the 1660 Final, including SWD's

Christiaan Muller, who joined the locals to set up his car for the

forthcoming Victory Nationals. Muller started the Final with a

perfect set-up and ran away to cross the Final finishing line first ahead of Percy Noah, who himself was indeed very quick. Tollies Muller's Polo sported a new colour scheme and he finished 3rd. Percy took the points for the evening with Jason Brink a mere 4 points behind him.

2.1 Modified Class

Pieta Victor did not enter his 2.1 Opel Corsa, leaving Jody van

Zummeren with a calm and relaxed evening behind the wheel. Percy Noah came 2nd in the Final. The class needs more cars, but Victor will be back and will soon be joined by Petri Greeff in a brand new Golf.

Super 6 Class

Lately the Super 6 class is where Race Controllers have to on High

Alert!

6 cars started the Final and Johan van Rensburg in a rear wheel drive Golf, dominated the evening, as well as the Final. Rudi Bellew came 2nd in the Final ahead of Henri Muller's Sierra. Abri Pienaar will

soon return with a new, exciting BMW.

V8 AMS Class

Last but not least, the mighty V8 class once again lived up to

expectation and racing was super quick and exciting. Os Hurter's Late Model seemed to be a bit off the pace compared to its’ previous

outing, with what seemed to be suspension set-up being the culprit.

In contrast, Johan Swart and the V8 master, Pieta Victor, made sure they had everything tuned to per-fection for yet another ding dong battle. Swart is on a missile mission

for success in the forthcoming

Nationals and in the Final, blasted to an excellent win ahead of Pieta Victor. Victor's car may well be at a

slight technological disadvantage against Swart's new

car, but he makes it run like a jockey mastering the leading horse

at the Durban July. Great experience for Johan to be exposed to this type of pressure and he

makes it look so easy.

Elton Gillmer again raced Swart's old Lexus and must be looking

forward to soon enter the Late Model. Johnny Weitz withdrew and we still await Leon Ferreira's

return. Leon is always full of surprises, so the opposition needs

to on the alert.

Border Stock Car Association held another round of the regional championship on the 9th of April 2016 at the Summerpride showground’s circuit in East London. A strong contingent of competitors entered the evening’s racing as spectators prepared themselves for some fiery action

on track.

1660 Class

The 1660 class has grown in recent races and the level of competition is truly spectacular. With the open invitational nationwide 1660 challenge

to be held at the East London circuit, just around the corner, it is

DIRT

OVAL

Page 26: Motorsport EC May 2016 issue 11

truly a promising sign for the club. Zaine Knickelbein drove with solid consistency on the evening to take victory in the 1660 class ahead of a hard charging Delwin Crous. Crous has found some immense pace from his golf and is proving to be a real contender this season. Percy Noah enjoyed his return to the East London circuit with 3rd overall on the evening. Wesley Collins came

home in 4th overall ahead of Ryan Dalton in 5th. Wayne Victor once again suffered some mechanical problems before retiring early and

finishing 6th overall. Dale Beukman finished in 7th place

ahead of Anthony Power in 8th.

2.1 Modified Class

The 2.1 Modified class turned into

OVAL

a real exciting affair as Donovan Voogt made some electric

overtaking manoeuvres around the outside on his way to 4th overall and he collected the driver of the day accolade in the process. It was however Kayle Power who took

home the most points on the evening to finish 1st in class.

George Noah driving a gold, fended off Shawn Du Preez in his sideways Datsun for 2nd and 3rd

respectively. Donovan Voogt finished in 4th overall, ahead of

Jason Prinsloo in 5th, Rene Stroebel in 6th and Gert Stroebel in

7th.

Junior Hot Rod Class

The Junior Hot Rod Class was once again dominated by Corbin

Holloway who is really driving superbly lately. He was denied a

clean sweep of victories however, by a great drive from the Naude sisters Carla and Amy. Carla took victory in Heat 3 and cemented herself in 2nd place for the evening. Meryke van der Walt managed a consistent performance to come home in 3rd place on her dirt oval debut. Rudi Smith came home in 4th place

ahead of Amy Naude in 5th.

Super-Hot Rod Class

In the Super Hot Rod Class, it was none other than the talented Shawn Collins who took a clean sweep of

victories on the evening in the well-known yellow Peugeot. The car hasn’t seen much track time over the past few seasons, but made a welcome return with Collins at the wheel. Dean Potgieter finished

Round 2 of the BMSC Regional Championship was held at the Historic East London Grand Prix Circuit on the 16th of April 2016. After drivers

had settled into a rhythm at the first round, the real charge for the championship was about to begin.

Bikes

The bike category was once again hotly contested and Dean Klopper took the victory in the Powersport class.

The Superbike class saw the return of the intense rivalry between

Travis Naude and Travis Warne. This rivalry has been playing itself out over the past couple seasons, and is just starting to warm up in 2016. On the day it was Travis

Naude on board his Kawasaki Machine who took victory for the day ahead of Travis Warne on his

Honda. Pierre Le Roux was hanging in the wings in case the rivalry boiled over and finished a

solid 3rd overall. Jason Joshua finished in 4th overall ahead of Brian Ellard in 5th and Allen

Russell in 6th place.

In the Sport class Kevin Redman thrived on the high speed East London Grand Prix circuit and

took a well-deserved victory ahead of Emile Streicher in 2nd and Gerrie Havenga in 3rd place.

Historic’s

The Historic A class saw the return of the mighty V8 Ford Granada of Brett Franklin to take on the V8 Ford Capri of Chris Blom. We have

seen this battle before and it is always a heavyweight slugfest as

these Powerful V8’s slug it out corner for corner around the

circuit. The roar of these V8’s at full tilt is almighty and it is a real crowd pleaser to see these brutes in action. On the day it would be Chris Blom who got the better of Brett Franklin

to take the Class A victory.

In Class B in an equally impressive Chev Can Am V8 Derick Boy took

home the overall Victory.

The Beauty of the Dunlop Historic Series is that Mighty V8’s

are on track with nimble four cylinders and these lighter race

machines love to show that power isn’t always everything. It was Christopher Radloff who came

home as the First four cylinder engine runner as he took home 1st

overall in class C in his Toyota Corona.

Gary Schultz put in a great performance in his Ford escort to finish in 2nd place ahead of Wayne Botha in 3rd. Rob Rowe powered

his BMW 2002 Turbo to 4th place ahead of Danian Staffen in a Ford Escort in 5th. Danie De Lange in his Big V8 Chev Deville came home in 6th place ahead of Johan

Coetzee in a Porsche in 7th.

Class D saw Brendan Smith take another fine victory in his ford

escort ahead of Quentin Lessing in 2nd place. Shane Fantham came

home 3rd ahead of Donovan Collins in 4th. Johan van der

Westhuizen was 5th and Matthew Gudmanz was 6th.

Simon Thesen was once again in a bullish mood in his BMW e46 powered by an RB26 turbo engine. The man with the red BMW once again dominated proceedings on the day and took victory in Class C ahead of Darryl Hall in 2nd. Hall

piloted his lotus faultlessly and finished well clear of the next man on the road Shaun Miller in a golf.

Miller took victory in Class D ahead of Shaun Heidemann also in

a Golf in 2nd.

Craig Borges finished hot on the heels of Heinemann’s golf and

finished 1st in class E.

Daron Gudmanz was the next man down the road and finished ahead of Cameron Hall in his BMW e36. Sebastian Schutte managed to fend off Grant Godfrey, while Kevin Vosloo finished 10th on the road

on his main circuit debut.

KARTING

Algoa Kart Club’s first regional event for 2016 took place on Saturday 16 April. As the club is hosting the National Event on the 30th of April, there was a large contingent of out of town competitors who attended the event for some practice ahead of the big day. It was awesome to see such colossal

fields especially in the Mini Rok and Max Categories.

50cc Cadet Class

Joaquin de Oliveira dominated the days proceeding in the 50cc cadet class with a full house of points after winning each heat. 2nd place went the way of Reese Koorzen. Hot on his Heels was Bryce Loenen and Border’s

reigning 50cc Cadet Champion Kaylim Padayachee who finished in 4th just 1 point further adrift. Dylan Stevens was consistent to finish in 5th overall ahead of Red Scholtz in 6th and Kiara Potgieter

in 7th place.

60cc Mini Rok Class

An Impressive field of 24 mini Rok

competitors lined the grid for the days racing and after some tough

wheel to wheel battles it was Leyton Fourie who took victory, and was tied on points with 2nd placed Kwanda Mokoena. Jayden Els managed to finish a solid 3rd

and deny the local lad, Joshua Coertze a podium finish. Coertze had to settle for 4th on the day, but

with Charl Visser in 6th place.

Jarrod Waberski and Daniele Patrizi fought hard and finished in 7th and 8th places. The next local

lad was Kenzo Barnard who finished in 9th. He will

however take some solid confidence out of the performance knowing that he managed to finish just outside of the front battles in

some of the heats, and he most certainly has the pace to take the

fight to the front runners.

Daniel De Paiva rounded out the top 10. The rest of the locals in the field came in the form of Aiden

Barnard in 14th position, Keisha Potgieter in 18th, Tristan Coertze

in 21st, and East London’s Sebastian Smith – who would be bitterly disappointed after a strong showing in practice ended in major mechanical difficulties throughout

the days racing – in 23rd and Jordan Dorning in 24th.

national as one of the favorites after a strong showing in the PE regional as he took victory in 2 of the 3 heats in the junior max class. 2nd place went to Cameron O’Connor who kept Boyd honest throughout the day’s proceedings. 3rd overall was

Jason Coetzee who narrowly fended off Tiffany Napier who put

in a solid and consistent performance to finish 4th. Sam Lockhoff came home in 5th overall.

Senior Max

An 8 Kart Strong senior max field contested the days racing, with nearly half of the field made up by female competitors. Joshua Dias

Dominated the class taking 3 wins from 3 starts and setting himself up

perfectly to carry some good momentum into the national.

Delon Thompson fended off Delano Fowler to finish 2nd and 3rd respectively, while the first of the lady competitors, Ivana Cetinich came home in 4th place. Reigning Junior Max National Champion Dino Stirmin finished 5th after a

relatively quiet outing. East London’s Shannon Jackson

suffered with a lack of power and had to fight hard to finish in 6th. She will no doubt come back stron-ger at the national where she will want to put together a good result

with the local support behind her. Port Elizabeth’s Kean Barnard

finished in 7th place ahead of East London’s Ashton Nicole Nell in 8th.

Michael Stephen was unbeatable at the regional and seemed to get stronger and stronger as the day went by. He will no doubt want to

carry the momentum forward and will definitely want a repeat

performance of a 3 victories from 3 starts when the national comes around. 2nd place was the other local man, Bryn High and he too would be happy with the results heading into the national. 3rd place went to Luca Munaretto who put in

a good performance on the day.

It was an early start to the day to prepare for the second leg of the Border 4x4 Club challenge series, which was held in the Pine Forests between

Beacon Bay and Gonubie.

The weather Gods seemed to be appeased as they offered us a stunning day with warm temperatures and just a little wind to keep things cool. After the driver’s briefing, action got under way at around 10am, and with around 20 vehicles entering, we knew it was going to be a long day in the

sun!

The first 2 obstacles were literally sea sand! This was something very different for most of the drivers. It is not easy to drive in these conditions, as the score sheets will tell. Momentum is the key when driving in soft sand! Without mentioning names, some folk even managed to break a

diff in the sand! (We are still not sure how he did that.)

The rest of the obstacles were on hard ground, where traction was not a problem, but the 1, 5 meter deep ruts we had to traverse, were! Dropping

into some of those erosion sloots left your heart

beating in your throat, and then when in there, your heart returned

to your chest, you then had to wonder how on earth you would

get out again.

In all truth, many never discovered how to get out of those deep ruts, as their only light at the end of the tunnel, were the reverse lights of the recovery vehicle coming to tow

them out.

All vehicles were tested to the maximum on the day. Suspensions were twisted to breaking point and

side rollover angles were pushed to the limit. With such a difficult/

technical course, choosing the correct lines through the obstacles was crucial. Literally an inch off

line would make or break you.

After a good day of dropping into deep ruts, climbing back out again, and getting all twisted up, the last

obstacle for the day was a time trial. This is where the drivers can “stretch the legs” of their vehicles

and are timed around a short circuit which was set out. This

obstacle was truly a crowd favourite, and some drivers realised (almost the hard way) that a lifted

Isuzu does not like going around sharp corners to fast!

Once the dust had settled and the scores had been tallied, Nigel Burmeister, Arno Bester, Eugene Scheun and Shaun Bezuidenhout

took top honours in their respective classes. They therefore will maintain bragging rights until the next challenge in Stutterheim

on the 28th May 2016.

Last but never least a special thanks needs to go to our sponsors, Outdoor Warehouse, Nyathi

Security and Wild Coast FM. Also thanks to the land owner for

allowing us to use his private land for our challenge as well as to the V8 and hot rod club who attended

to the catering.

A great day was had by all and we look forward to the next event held

at this venue!
