2014 ALREADY???? I didn’t get everything done for 2013 yet... and I’m still thinking the 90’s were just a few months ago.. How come it took soooo long to turn 16?....so I could get my drivers license … now it’s all about the memories from those days gone by….

This picture is special to Nancy and I. Not only because it captures a happy moment in time but it was also taken by Tom Phillips during the 2013 Scarecrow show. Tom had a way of bringing out the brightness of a cloudy day. He could make you smile, and now he has added a lasting memory to our life….

Christmas is a tough time for those not lucky enough to be at home with their families. A small donation goes a long way in helping to offset the cost of entertainment for those who must stay there.

If you or your origination would like to make a donation to the Boyington to help with some upcoming activities please contact J.R. at 228 596-0548 or Jimbo 228 596-0664 for info.

Jimbo, With the Holidays upon us, I would like to share a personal experience with my

family and friends about drinking and driving. As you may know, some of us have been known to have brushes with the

authorities from time to time on the way home after a "social session" out with friends.

Well, a few days ago, I was out for an evening with friends and had several cocktails followed by some rather nice red wine with dinner.

Feeling jolly, I still had the sense to know that I may be slightly over the limit. That's when I did something that I've never done before--I took a cab home.

Sure enough, on the way home, there was a police road block, but since it was a cab, they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident.

This was a real surprise as I had never driven a cab before. I don't know where I got it. And now that it's in my garage, I don't know what to do with it.

Jimbo, An older gentleman (mid 70's) walks into an upscale cocktail

lounge. He is very well dressed, smelling slightly of an expensive aftershave, hair well groomed, great looking suit, flower in his lapel, shoes shined and no walker.

He presents a suave, well-looked-after image. Seated at the bar is an elderly (70ish) fine looking lady. The gentleman walks over, sits alongside her, orders a drink,

takes a sip, turns to her and says, "So tell me good looking, do I come here often?"

As usual time has run out and it’s the deadline to get this magazine off to the printer but, before I do I just want to say…..

Here’s to a Happy New Year…..2014 Jimbo

On Sunday morning December 1, 2014, Mississippi Classic Cruisers lost one of its founding members and past presidents, Tom Phillips. His funeral was on Wednesday December 4th at First Baptist church located at Hwy 463 and Hwy 51 (site of the Scarecrow Event) in Madison. In honor of Tom's memory members were asked to drive their classic vehicle.

A little more than 10 years ago, Tom and a few others founded an open car club for all those to share their passion for motor vehicles. That was not enough for Tom. He wanted the Club to be the largest and best Club in Mississippi. He and his wife Cindy managed the Club's business affairs, he wrote the monthly newsletter and signed on Club sponsors. Again this was not enough for Tom. He wanted to promote his love of cars with others while at the same time benefitting worthy local charities. As the Club's first President, this vision gave birth to the Scarecrow Cruise and Car Show. Again, he was the catalyst and he was the one that worked the hardest to make the show a success. Behind Tom's drive and direction, the Scarecrow Cruise and Car Show has become one of the top four car events in the state of Mississippi and over the years it has generated more than $90,000 for local charities. "Not bad for a little 'ole car club from Mississippi!" as Tom said in his last communication to the Board.

"Tom will be missed beyond comprehension by his family, friends and "old car buddies," was a statement made in a recent email. No truer thing could be said about Tom.

Tom, we will all miss you. Manley, Canaan

Jimbo, Mike Murray, of Ocean Springs, MS. (aka.

“Rat Rod Mike”) has added to his collection of unique and different vehicles.

Mike is most known for his “Funky Rat Mobile” the pick-up. Been photographed by just about everyone who has attended a show on the Gulf Coast.. Check out this bullet nosed Studebaker parked in his garage.

Rats & Cats Kustoms photography/video club from southern Louisiana has been entertaining the hot rod community straight from the bayou for 4 years straight. Loving classic cars and custom rides most of their lives, it's understandable that the hot rod lifestyle runs in their blood. The club started out with just a few dedicated members & has grown into 8 members with more joining every year. In the beginning, they have been to numerous car shows & hot rod get-togethers filming & photographing cool rides & beautiful models for the pleasure of entertaining the hot rod on lookers. Any custom car enthusiast can tell you that they would rather attend & enter a car show with a cool ride than just showing up in the parking lot just to walk around admiring everyone else's creations. With that in mind, club founder Kane McMellon decided to invest in something that would draw attention to the club and advertise with style. This 1960 Cadillac Fleetwood had everything in looks, style, and history that the club was looking for to transport the camera equipment and members to shows and photo shoots. The car was named "Kathy" to remember Kane & his brother Corey's mother who in the past had

taken them to car shows to further get them involved in the car scene along with their father Johnny who was a big influence to the club and still is today. With any popular classic car like this, parts tend to get expensive as well as hard to find, and with the other hot rod projects they wanted to finish, Kane thought it would be a wise decision to sell the Caddy to someone that could take over the restoration.

Alisha Allemand who is the model featured here had been admiring the car for some time & her husband James purchased it with eager intention of finishing this beauty. Even though the Caddy was Kane's favorite car since he was 15 years old, he knew that the money could be used for more camera equipment and other expenses to invest into the club. The 1960 Cadillac was all stock from it's freshly tuned 390 V8, newly painted sleek body, and all trim and glass in place. Kane had mentioned that the car was much better to admire from a distance than to drive.

A few months had past & Rats & Cats Kustoms was up for doing another photo shoot, and what better way to do a new project than to use a car with the owner's wife as the model? They just had to do it. The club set up a date and time at the Allemand residence & did what they did best. Alisha was ready and mentioned that she had not taken photos since she was a little girl, she was perfect... her hospitality, friendliness, & cooperation, & with everyone in the club feeding off of her energy, it seemed to be one of the best shoots the club could remember.

When you love a car so much and understand that it's to the point that it's time to let it go... you appreciate the fun times and experiences you've had in it, but some how, some way, it always tends to come back to you. This story is dedicated to Kathy Vice... Rest in Peace.

Never had I ever had a thought that somebody was instrumental in the development of the speakers at the drive-in theaters. I spent a lot of nights there and hung that speaker on my car window without ever thinking that somewhere an idea was hatched that led to this piece of history.

I was working at the church fish fry when I met Tom Hilligoss. Something clicked between us and we became good friends. I suppose it was the bench racing we did during the down times. I discovered that Tom owned Projected Sound, one of the companies that manufactured those speakers that allowed us to enjoy the drive-in movies and the romance that accompanied the experience. Projected Sound was a company in Plainfield, Indiana where I currently live. If you ever looked at the logo on the speaker while you were at the movies (I realize that is a stretch. I wasn't ever there to study the speaker.), it might have been made in Plainfield, Indiana.

Tom wrote a poem about his hometown of Plainfield, Indiana. I think you will find some things in it that will remind you of your past. I didn't grow up here, and it reminded me of similarities of my home town. I would like to share it with you in hopes that it brings back fond memories.

Plainfield By Tom Hilligoss 8/5/2009

I grew up in Plainfield Pretty fortunate I guess. Population 'bout a thousand. A Hoosier town GOD blessed. Not too big or not too small, For a town I'd say just right. You might not know all the names of folks But you knew 'em all by sight. Seems most people were related In this community. They looked after theirs and yours. That's responsibility. I remember downtown places That I loved to explore Like Strafford's Drugs, the Prewitt And Wiggies 10 cent store. In the summertime the kids would bike Down to the park to play They didn't need adults around to organize their day.

My folks, grandparents, My daughter's family too All once lived on South Vine St. No lie. That's really true. Peg and Hilly were my folks,

The Franklins my grandparents. I hope that after I grew-up

Their training was apparent.

The town's changed a bit since those days, It's bigger you can see. It's had a lot of growing pains But can't outgrow you and me.

First Wednesdays now of even months The old-timers get together. They talk about the good old days And yes, sometimes the weather. Guess we're all darn proud of this small town We brag about it too. But how can you call it braggin' If all we say is true?

I am so proud to be a friend of Tom and Dolly Hilligoss, and thankful for all the lessons they have taught me. I wish you could get to know them as I have. There are people in your lives that are just as special. Make sure you let them know, and seek out new ones. Everyone is special and unique.

- Public Welcome -

by: Lynn Makua

Well things were better this last month, Larry sold the 67 Olds Cutlass to guy in Slidell, La. and he is really happy! So, looks like Santa is going to be very good to me!

I was amazed at the liquor and wine prices in LA. (Slidell). I still buy from Vincent & Kathy on 90 here in BSL. (Waveland Liquor). To me they are the best, and you will like them.

I was talking to Kathy and she told me someone throw a big rock thru the front door on a Sunday afternoon. The detective said they were a couple of kids. All they took is some booze and peanuts.

Hit BSL for Christmas party’s. VFW, American Legion in BSL and Tri-R-BAR in Waveland all had their party on the Friday the 13th! They all had great food! Larry decided to have desert at every party. I tried a little bit of everything. Larry was my designated driver. (Beas of VFW & Harold & Lillian’s) he really was! So, I able to enjoy my wine.

As of this writing I still have to go the Gabbies Bar in BSL on Dec. 17 and on the 21th I need to hit Workman’s Bar in Gulfport and Trax’s in Long Beach and last but not least Harold & Lillian’s in Clermont Harbor. Guess I better be nice to Larry (my designated driver!) . I’ll let y’all know next month about all the party’s.

SAM of the VFW in Lakeshore, said he does not have a Christmas Party for adults. He said he has a Christmas party for the children. Food, Games, and Gifts for the kids. He does this every year.

As I mentioned last month, C&R Bar on Coleman, is now Tri-R-Bar. Larry loves the place because Rob serves Cook’s Champaign by the glass and he makes a good mimosa. Robby still cooks (kitchen opens at 10:30 a.m.) and learning to be a bartender. He’s got the personality and looks and single! I think he will make it.

The two brothers are doing a great job. Larry likes to talk to their Dad Robert about “Strictly Stock” car racing on the dirt ovals.

Girls, Robbie is the older brothers and is not bad looking either! When Robbie not running the bar he’s going to different bar’s for the pool tournaments.

Dempsey’s in the Kiln is still packing them in, and the gift shop did great for Christmas.

El Maguey’s still has 10% off with this ad in the magazine, try it, you’ll like it. I usually go for lunch and my favorite is #13 Speedy Gonzales for only $5.25 and a glass of wine only $3.50.

The only new place that I have stopped at is Hart to Hart Antiques, 924 Hwy 90, Waveland. Open Wed. thru Sat. 10 a.m. – 4 a.m. I think it is the best Antique Store around! Furniture, dishes, paintings etc. Next month we will talk Hawaii. Watch next month for of my old and new places! ALOHA Y’ALL

Its the end of another year for all of us movie lovers. 2013 has come and gone. So lets wrap it up, put a big bow on it and regift it! It's time for my annual top 10 "gotta see um" movie list.

I saw tons of movies this past year but hear are the ones I thinks everyone should see. Lets start from number 10 and work our way back to number 1. It will build suspense and keep you hanging on just like a great thriller movie but don't cheat and look at number 1 first.

10. Kick Ass 2. This low budget action, comic book fantasy flick will not be on too many list. It was a fun little romp but the best thing about it was actress, Cloe Grace Moeretz. this is the first time I have noticed her and I predict she will "kick Ass" (sorry, couldn't help myself) and become a major player in Hollywood soon.

9. Zero Dark Thirty. I have to admit I didn't recognize some of the actors who starred in this trye life story of the capture and killing of Osama Binladen. This was a well made movie and they stayed true to the facts and did a great job. We all no the outcome of this historical telling of revenge for the USA and the world. But this movie sheds light on how we finally destroyed this pathetic evil bastard.

8. Django Unchained. This Tarentino power house stars Jamie Fox, Leonardo Decapreo and Samuel L Jackson. It has everything you would expect in a Quinton Tarentino Romp. Smart snappy word play, controversial subject matter, over the top violence and big time stars playing unlikeable characters so well you like them!

7. Lincoln. Tons of big name actors bring this often told story to the big screen in an interesting and stylish version. Lots of small details, sub plots and character development makes the movie a must fro history buffs and Abraham Lincoln fans. It's a long film so get an extra large bucket of pop corn and sit back and let history school you.

6. Pacific Rim. This is a movie genre I usually don't get excited about but this movie grabbed me and rocked me for two hours. Great CGI and an interesting story line pushes this "end of the world as we no it" tale of robots saving the world believable. Well, at least for a couple of hours.

5. The Impossible. This real life tragedy of the 2004 tsunami was represented in an intriguing and painfully honest reading on the big screen. Naomi Watts shined in this bleak story of surviving the worst flood in modern times. It was hard to watch and they did not sugar coat the loss of life and showed how humanity can work under pressure. This movie puts a little hope for our future as human beings by showing how one family stayed together and helped others.

4. Mud. I never thought i would put a Matthew McConaughey film in a top 10 list but he has proven me wrong. This riveting story of low life with a heart of gold has been tols before. But this gritty crime drama has a twist to an age old story of love and redemption tha was fresh. I don't think Matthew took his shirt off in this movie more than, 2 times maybe ?

3. The Place Beyond The Pines. Ryan Gossling goes all out in this tale of a carnie hustler who finds love the hard way. He has never shied away from unflattering roles and this main character has some flaws and bad facial tattoos! With every bad guy a story needs a good guy to capture him. Who better to pay this part than Bradley Cooper. The best thing about this story is that none of the main characters are what they seem. I won't drop a spoiler bomb on you but Mr. Cooper might not be as squeaky clean as we like our heroes. This is a great movie and a must see fro 2013.

2. Captain Phillips. Not a lot I have to say about this true story of modern pirates and ocean going vessels. Toms Hanks stars as the captain of a cargo ship that gets boarded by desperate criminals. Tom always delivers and he does it again. The most interesting part of this movie are the sub plots and story lines of the bad guys in this pirate story. It shows you why they try to take over ships and what dire situation has pushed them to the edge. A real good film that shows us how blessed we are in this big world because not everyone has what they need to survive.

1. Finally, my favorite film of 2013 is, drum roll, About Time. It's a comedy and I'm not a big fan of this genre and would not pick funny films for my top 10 list but I loved this one. I'm a big Bill Nighy fan and also a fan of Rachel Mc Adams. The producers of the great film Love Actually, gave us another English love story that will stand the test of time (travel). That's right, a time travel story with Ms. McAdams. It's been done before but not like this light, breezy love story. I don't want to say too much about the story line but a family of men can time travel. That can be a blessing or a curse and that's what makes this movie number 1 for me in 2013. A family full of off beat characters try and face the future together by reliving the past. These kind of movies always make me want to move to England and find my future Mrs. DD Thunders. Things seem cooler over there and that's the sign of a great movie. Balancing the laughter and tears that we all share in life is done so well in this story. Watching Bill Nighy play a time travelin father who tries to explain to his awkward 21 year old son that he can go back in time and have a redo is something we all wish we could do. To say the right thing in the right moment to a girl that you bump into can be a life changer. Having the power to get it right no matter how many times you have to go backwards in life has it's problems. That is where this film shines. It's the best date movie of 2013 and I did not let that fact get by me.

See you at the matinee.

Thanks so much for all your support this past year. Keep those comments coming to [email protected].

S ome are in wheel

chairs, most are dead, none of my

articles have they read, but my thoughts always return to them.

I had a comment or two about my last month article. Guys you have to understand that I did take many of the girls out more than once! If you see a repeat of the name it was a different night, and a different ending which I really can't describe in print OK?

Anyway, back to history. Bobby Ball ran out of Phoenix, as did Jimmy Bryan. I was good friends with Bryan and was o.k. with Bobby, but never really knew him that well. I ran against him at the ¼ mile dirt at South Mountain Speedway in the early 1950's. Ernie Mohammed was owner and promoter of the track, and I think Bobby always drove Ernie's midget.

In Nov. 1952 Bobby won the AAA Championship race at San Jose, Ca. ¼ mile dirt then traveled to L A. CA (Gardena) and “got on his head” at Carroll Speedway, big fast ½ mile dirt, later torn down for the new freeway to San Diego.

Bobby suffered terrible head injuries (you remember my article on cardboard helmets?) I'm sure he was not wearing a “Shock Shell” made in Long Beach, CA. He went into a coma for 14 months and then died. He won the champ race 11/25/52, and died from injuries at Carroll 1/4/53 just 6 weeks later. He finished 5th in the Indy 500 1951.

Jimmy Bryan was very likeable, had a ready smile, and usually had a cigar in his mouth, but I don't even remember him lighting or smoking it! He was an excellent mechanic and a great race car driver.

Jimmy was winning many midget races and due to his midget talent he was offered a Indy 500 car and champ car. He won the National Championship in 1954, 1956, and 1957. During those 3 years he ran 34 races and won 17 of them. I was sure glad he wasn't running our midget circuit on the west coast.

When I was at the 1956 Indy 500 he was driving the “Dean Van Lines Kuzma built roadster. He won the “Monza 500” in 1957. This was a race where the Italian government invited any and all Indy 500 cars to come and race against the Ferraris, Jags, Lotues, Mercedes, and Alphas. This race was held in 1957 and this is a true story - - - - -

The fastest car at Indy was the “Novi” it was a dual centrifugal supercharged 160 cubic in V-8. Doesn't sound like much! Well, it put out 600 HP! It was originally built by Winfield but Jean Marcenac was the “wrench” in 1956 when I was there. They took it to Monza (there were 10 or 12 US entries).

Tony Bettenhausen was driving the “NOVI”, when they (USA car & drivers) got there to this 40-50 ft high banked oval, the USA guys saw that there was a white line painted all the way around the track, about ¾ of the way up the bank. The track officials advised that it was too dangerous to go up higher!

One of the US drivers asked “what's the track record here?” 181 was the answer.

So, Tony took the NOVI out, ran her up to the rim, as any Midwest high bank driver would do, and turned 221.

Mercedes, Ferrari, pulled out their entry blanks left the track. Jaguar stayed, and some other, but were out classed. Jimmy Bryan won the race in his Kuzma, Dean Van Line special….. and that's another story.

Langhorne was my hometown track, I’d work there, walking around selling… yelling “ Candy!! Orange Drink!!!”, just to get in. I was there working the infield that race ….. Jimbo

Phoenix Racecar Driver Jimmy Bryan

Author: Douglas Towne - By 1951, Bryan’s success on the

midget-car circuit advanced him to full-sized “Indy cars.” But while racing alongside his Phoenix buddy Bobby Ball in 1954, Bryan also experienced the dark and dangerous side of auto racing: Ball was killed in an accident.

Undeterred, Bryan’s racing career went into high gear. Showing an amazing fearlessness and physical stamina (he won two races in less than 24 hours in Indianapolis and Milwaukee), Bryan dominated the rough dirt ovals that were popular at the time. He won the national driving championship in 1954, 1956 and 1957. Over a three-year stretch, he won half of his 34 starts.

“Jimmy Bryan was the quintessential race car driver of the 1950s and put Arizona on the map because of his tremendous popularity with racing fans,” Phil Sampaio tells PHOENIX magazine. Sampaio is co-author of My Hero, My Friend: Jimmy Bryan (jimmybryanbook.com), winner of the 1992 American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasting Association’s “Best Book of the Year” award. The book is being re-released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 on May 29.

One of Bryan’s most famous races was the 1957 Bobby Ball Memorial at the Arizona State Fairgrounds, which determined the national champion of Indy car racing. Near the end of the race, Bryan was lapping another driver when he was squeezed toward the outside fence. Incredibly, Bryan flew off the track through a hole in the fence created by an earlier accident, zoomed behind a wooden barrier in a flurry of dust, then seconds later burst through another damaged fence section in an explosion of wood and landed back on the track. Tossing out fence fragments from his open-air cockpit, Bryan caught up and found himself in second place. Cheered on by the hometown crowd, Bryan passed the leader on a curve to win his third national driving championship. Afterward, The Arizona Republic called Bryan’s driving “a lumber truck gone berserk.”

In 1957, Bryan journeyed to Italy for the Race of Two Worlds at the Monza Autodrome. The 500-mile contest was billed as a competition matching the best American and European drivers. Bryan won, becoming the first American victorious in a major European race since 1921. Italian fans ripped at his clothing for souvenirs.

The only elusive triumph missing from Bryan’s résumé was the Indianapolis 500. He had come close to winning the race several times since first competing in 1952. In 1958, his trip to the Brickyard seemed promising since he was driving the “Belond Special,” which won the previous year. Bryan managed to avoid a 15-car pile-up during the first lap and rocketed to victory, acknowledging the roaring crowd and throwing his hands in the air in his characteristic salute.

After his Indy win, Bryan took a break. In a 1958 interview with Sports Illustrated magazine, his father said, “Now I hope he’ll retire.... I’m not a superstitious man, but I’ve noticed that Indianapolis winners ever since 1911 have had a record of running into trouble when they keep on racing.”

Bryan raced sporadically, and after disappointing finishes in two Indy 500s, he returned to dirt events in 1960. In a borrowed car, he qualified second at the Langhorne track in Pennsylvania. During the first turn, his car flipped violently, killing the 34-year-old. Survived by a wife and two daughters, Bryan was buried at Phoenix’s Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery at 23rd Avenue and Van Buren Street in what was called the biggest funeral ever held in Arizona.

After working a couple of weekends to unload the contents of Hot Rod Show trailer and put some elbow grease into getting the old girl ready for re-sale, we took off to Daytona Beach the day after Thanksgiving to deliver the trailer to the trailer dealer. My wife Scotty, the two Yorkies and I drove all night

Friday night until about 3am, pulled into a rest area just north of Jacksonville for about a three hour nap. Just about the time I got to sleep an 18 wheeler pulled in beside us for it's driver to take a nap and the driver left his engine running. Well heck, I pulled back on the interstate to drive until I got sleepy again, which happened in about 30 more miles, this time at this rest area I was gone quick. We woke up about 7:30 am and headed out for the last 100 miles to Daytona Beach.

We pulled into BestPriceTrailer.com, better known locally as The Car Shop Trailer Sales, about 9:30 am, dropped off the trailer, the completed the paperwork for trade-in or consignment, which ever will be greatest. With that out of the way it was time to head over to Daytona International Speedway and meet my brother Ken and his wife Linda at The Daytona Turkey Run Car Show. The Turkey Run has been going on for 40 years and features an incredible amount of cars.

I had a connection with Jim Brady who hooked me up with some tickets for the show. Jim was one of the guys that ran the show for 11 years. Once you get in the gate, there is a lot of walking to do. About 2 miles of cars long wise and about 1 mile deep of eye candy, 5,000 cars and about 2,000 vendors, along with a state fair size amount of food vendors. 137,400 people came through this car show. The show is overwhelming. That is the best word I can dig out of my old brain to describe it. Massive amounts of cars and trucks every which way you look, you practically get lost in a sea of cars to the point where you don't know where you are. The vendors were awesome, if you love car stuff it was heaven. Vendor wise I heard it compared to Moultrie, GA, but not quite as large as Moultrie. I found a vendor that will make the Hot Rod Show logo into a neon sign when I'm ready, I love neon!

Seems like everyone was there

Page 13: Motorsports january 2014 issuu

The only thing I could see to make The Turkey Run better was to get the Hot Rod Show to do the music. You could only hear their DJ if you got within 50 yards of their setup, it was mighty quite looking at the cars.

After checking out the car show, we checked into our hotel room, ordered Dominos Pizza and got settled in for the Iron Bowl Football game. I've been a diehard Alabama fan for over 50 years. Growing up in Alabama you had to pick sides early on in your life and you developed a thick skin early on about the rivalry with Auburn. It's brutal to most outsiders, but normal to us Alabama and Auburn fans. Well the game didn't turn out that well. After congratulating my Auburn friends I jumped out of my hotel window, luckily I had a first floor room.

The next morning we met my brother and his wife for breakfast and got back on the road headed for home. We cut that 13 hour drive with the trailer down to about 10 without it.

It was a quick trip, but we needed to get the trailer to the dealer so he could be trying to sell it for us, it gave us a change to go to The Turkey Run to get some good photos for you and I got to spend a little time with the only immediate family I have left, so all in all it was time well spent.

The new Hot Rod Show trailer won't be ready until the end of January when I have to drive up to the Cargo Mate Factory outside Atlanta to pick it up…I can't wait to get it…and you'll be there when I do…

Get that Hot Rod out of the garage and turn on the tunes of your day and enjoy that 17 FOREVER Hot Rod state of mind!

Til next month… Terry

I’ve learned- that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is be someone who can be loved. The rest is up to them. I’ve learned- that no matter how much I care, some people just don’t care back. I’ve learned- that it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it. I’ve learned- that no matter how good a friend is, they’re going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that. I’ve learned- that it’s not what you have in your life but who you have in your life that counts. I’ve learned- that you should never ruin an apology with an excuse. I’ve learned- that you can get by on charm for about fifteen minutes. After that, you’d better know something. I’ve learned- that you shouldn’t compare yourself to the best others can do. I’ve learned- that you can do something in an instant that will give you heart-ache for life. I’ve learned- that it’s taking me a long time to become the person I want to be. I’ve learned- that you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them. I’ve learned- that you can keep going long after you can’t. I’ve learned- that we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel. I’ve learned- that either you control your attitude or it controls you. I’ve learned- that regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades and there had better be something else to take its place. I’ve learned- that heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences. I’ve learned- that money is a lousy way of keeping score. I’ve learned- that my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time. I’ve learned- that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you’re down will be the ones to help you get back up. I’ve learned- that sometimes when I’m angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn’t give me the right to be cruel. I’ve learned- that true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love. I’ve learned- that just because someone doesn’t love you the way you want them to doesn’t mean they don’t love you with all they have. I’ve learned- that maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you’ve had and what you’ve learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you’ve celebrated. I’ve learned- that you should never tell a child their dreams are unlikely or

outlandish. Few things are more humiliating, and what a tragedy it would be if they believed it. I’ve learned- that your family won’t always be there for you. It may seem funny, but people you aren’t related to can take care of you and love you and teach you to trust people again. Families aren’t biological. I’ve learned- that it isn’t always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you are to learn to forgive yourself. I’ve learned- that no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn’t stop for your grief. I’ve learned- that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become. I’ve learned- that a rich person is not the one who has the most, but is one who needs the least. I’ve learned- that just because two people argue, it doesn’t mean they don’t love each other. And just because they don’t argue, it doesn’t mean they do. I’ve learned- that we don’t have to change friends if we understand that friends change. I’ve learned- that you shouldn’t be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever. I’ve learned- that two people can look at the exact same thing and see some-thing totally different. I’ve learned- that no matter how you try to protect your children, they will even-tually get hurt and you will hurt in the process. I’ve learned- that even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you, you will find the strength to help. I’ve learned- that credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being. I’ve learned- that the people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon. I’ve learned- that it’s hard to determine where to draw the line between being nice and not hurting people’s feelings, and standing up for what you believe. I’ve learned- that people will forget what you said, and people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.
