By: Jimbo Here we go into September and October two of the busiest car show months of the year. Nobody wants to do much in July or August. “It’s too hot and nobody will come” is the most frequent comment. Everyone is trying to squeeze their show or event into one of the weekends in the next couple of months.

Clubs and businesses are competing for the “BIG” crowd and I can’t blame them… the Coast Cruizers would like that too, but remember that it is important that the folks who show up need to know they are more than just a paid entry. With so many venues to choose from drivers and spectators are going to attend the events that they feel most welcomed at.

Loyalty is earned... by the words and deeds your organization stands by, so when your leaders decide that the crowd will “come around” don’t be surprised if your parking lot may have fewer vehicles than expected.

For the last seventeen years, Dixie Press Publishing, Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine and the Coast Cruizers live by a mission statement: Our goal is to help honorable vehicle clubs, business, charity organizations, and individuals, thru media print at the most reasonable cost possible. We also support these organizations with our members whenever possible and hold events that raise funds for worthy causes. We will continue to keep these goals and strive to ensure they are met.

I was driving down the road and met a car coming the other way.

Although there was room to pass easily, I forced the oncoming car to slow down and wound down my window and shouted “Pig”.

I think the other driver was looking in his rear view mirror and swearing at me…… then his car hit the pig.

Well, there you go. Not everybody has your worst interests at heart! And sometimes when you help people your help is what gets them into trouble. Ah, the irony of life.

This parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule

fell into the farmer’s well. The farmer heard the mule praying or whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving.

Instead, he called his neighbors together, told them what had happened, and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.

Initially the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back, a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back, HE WOULD SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP!

This he did, blow after blow. “Shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up!” He repeated to encourage himself. No matter how painful the blows, or how distressing the situation seemed, the old mule fought panic and just kept right on SHAKING IT OFF AND STEPPING UP!

It wasn’t long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well! What seemed like it would bury him actually helped him . . . all because of the manner in which he handled his adversity.

THAT’S LIFE! This is how we should face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give in to panic, bitterness, or self-pity.

If you read the August motorsports, you saw the page for Andy's 49er restaurant.

I have been there several times and had great food every time. The first time I had the Catfish Etouffe. It had just a little spice in it, but I added just a little more. I like mine a little on the spicy side. It came with a big fillet of catfish, (fried or blackened) a house salad and bread. I just barely finished it all.

The next time I had the Jalapeno Burger with grilled onions and Jalapenos topped with pepper jack cheese. You can also get it on Jalapeno bun or sourdough. That was one good hamburger. That is just one of 12 burgers not counting the Ponyshoes, Horseshoes or Clydesdale, you need to go by there and read about these.

Well tonight we went and I was going to get a hamburger again, then I saw the pick 2 basket. So I went for the catfish and shrimp, along with the baked beans, which are great also.

Sharon had the ribeye sandwich a few weeks ago on a special and want to know if they would fix it again and they were happy to do it. She said it is the best ribeye sandwich she has ever had.

Our waiter tonight was Damien who did a great job. As we finished, he came by and ask if we wanted desert, bread pudding or key lime pie. I told him after eating all that fried food I better not because I am diabetic.

He brought the check and I gave him the plastic card, he left and returned is a few minutes. He had a plate with 2 chocolate chip cookies right out of the oven. Damien put the plate on the table and I ask him what is that. He said “I forgot you can't have them”, before he got the word “them” out of his mouth, I had my hand on both cookies and was on the way to eating mine. The only thing that would have made the cookies better would be a glass of cold milk.

The chef came out and said he just made the cookies and he had, they were still warm. It was his version of Tollhouse cookies. I hope he will still make the cookies now and then, because I am going to ask for the chocolate chip cookies.

If you like milk shakes, try one of Andy's. Hand dipped ice cream and they have 13 flavors.

Also try the lunch specials from 10:30am until 3pm. for $7.99 , well worth it.

Open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner and call ahead for takeouts.

Coastal Cruisers Have a New Home

For the past decade, the Coastal Cruisers of Slidell have held their Cruise-In at Mid Town Square Shopping Center in Slidell. Recently though, they were notified that they would no longer be allowed to hold their charity driven Cruise-In on the property.

Hearing of their plight, the Manager of Com-munity Relations representing North Shore Square Mall with assistance from the Key Store Manag-ers, The Coastal Cruisers will have a new home in front of Sears in the main parking area.

Needless to say, The Coastal Cruisers accepted the invitation and will hold their Cruise Nights on the first Saturday of the month. The Cruise-Ins will run from March though October and will rest in November through February.

The North Shore Square Mall has extended "First Class Accommodations" to them and now the Coastal Cruisers have lots of space for growth. In addition, the North Shore Square Mall offers a great Food Court and the surrounding area has an abundance of popular restaurants as well.

The Coastal Cruisers would like to publicly thank the Management Team at "North Shore Square Mall" for extending not only a helping hand, but the kind of mutually beneficial relationship that will help "fuel the engine that makes us go!"

Well, it's been like a Charles Dickens novel " It was the worst of times/it was the best of times".

Fortunately the Coastal Cruisers' best is yet to come, beginning with their new home at North Shore Square Mall and the opportunity for them to present a great new venue and invite everyone to their Cruise Nights!

Walk along the road back into the history of the RV industry.

I was taking a cruise up to northern Michigan when I came upon a museum that is worth visiting. It is in Elkhart, Indiana and it is called the “RV/MH Hall of Fame”.

It was interesting learning how the RV industry started in the 1800's and continues to this day.

The 1916 “Telescoping Apartment” was there along with the 1931 Mae West Housecar, which among other luxury appointments had a back porch with a rocking chair so she could enjoy cool breezes. This vehicle was used for transport between her home and the studio.

The “Star Streak II” was present, hand built by Paul Jones on a 1976 Cadillac Eldorado chassis for us gearheads.

Vehicles and accommodations from the infancy of the industry right up until modern times are there for your enjoyment, along with scale models and advertisements from the day. There is even an extensive library and “Wall of Fame”. I can't possibly share with you all the photos I took. I am going to share a few I took and some from their web site www.rvmhhalloffame.org where you can get all the information about the museum.

I hope you have an opportunity to visit for yourself. I am sure you will have an entertaining time.

The Matinee Rocker: By: DD Thunders.

We still are knee deep in the summer blockbuster season so I had to indulge, so here we go. Probably the biggest 2012 summer release the Dark Knight Rises. I have always been a Batman fan. When I was a tyke I never missed an episode. I had the pj's, the mask, you name it I had it. Of course that was the original tv show from the 60's. A lighthearted take on a dark, comic superhero. I remember getting the time out corner for taking a crayon and drawing bats on all the hub caps of my parent brand new 1966 Pontiac

Bonneville. I thought it looked cool, the car had some big Detroit steel fins and was my "Batmobile". I’m not a real comic book fan, sorry comic.com, but I have keep up with all the batman franchises over the years. The series that came out in the late 80's were pretty good movies. and this contemporary offering is not bad at all, I liked it. I saw the first release in this series but had trouble getting passed Batmans (Christian Bale) mean guy accent. Kind of like Clint Eastwood being pulled out of his super high-waisted belt drawn trousers. I hope when I'm 70 something my pants don't go for the sky! But anyway, back to Gotham city. Ann Hathaway's Catwoman stole the show! Having a wrong side of the law criminal make the switch to some what of a do-gooder was a great plot pusher. I really enjoyed her character, beautiful, self reliant and can stand toe to toe with the Batman of Gotham. I always have enjoy Michael Cain’s work in film and his take on the ever suffering butler, mentor and surrogate father figure, (Alfred) whose character was a perfect foil to Baines cryptic sullen crime fighter in exile. I pretty good plot keeps this story cruising with awesome Batmobiles, Bat cycles, Cat cycles that morph into Batcopters. Big boys (and girls) gotta’ have there toys. The villain in this story was played very convincingly by actor Tom Hardy. His character Bane was a street urchin from the third world who rose to dominance with brute force and street smarts that matches Bruce Waynes Ivy League upbringing. he tries to shut down Gotham by taking it down from Wall Street to the Bowery with a gang of Mad Max road warriors. I won’t give too much away but batman does back down and give up for a bit but its hard to hide when a beautiful Cat woman is burning thru a couple of her nine lives in a skin tight cat suit! I give this blockbuster 7out of 10 picks

Next up is a comedy from the current Hollywood funny guys titled the

watch. I was a bit disappointed in this supernatural/comedy joke vehicle. I like Ben Stiller and still love Vince Vaughn. who doesn't like Jonah Hill? It’s kind of different than most comedies coming out this summer but creepy dialogue and one too many penis references made me want to rethink what is funny and what is just a contest to see how much you can push the awkward envelope. I'm not too old to like total locker-room sophomore type comedy. I like it when its a smart take on something we have all heard a million times. Ben Stiller's uber nerd character is not a stretch. He plays that in pretty much every movie he does. I would to all day long for that kind of green. And I have watched Vince Vaughn give a million pep talks to his buddies via animal house "Bluto" style slow clap speech and he nails this one, almost. Jonha Hill was pretty funny as a mama's boy who will never fly the coup but will give his poor mother a verbal beat down to look cool to a bunch of social underachievers. The plot about an alien attack on Stiller's characters place of employment is funny but falls short from no strong script and actors who probably overpowered a director that was trying to stay cool to a bunch of, wait a minute. That is just like the script for this movie. Hope I didn't give too much away..... I give this big budget laugh bomb 4 out of 10 picks...

Last but not least is my personal fav out of my three big screen offerings is a little movie titled safety not guaranteed directed by Colin Trevorrow and starring Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass, Jake Johnson and the only real recognizable cast member Kristin (forgetting Sarah Marshall) Bell. Well, maybe not the only familiar face in this low budget semi dark comedy. I couldn't figure out why the main character looked so familiar but...turns out Aubry Plaza was the shy glamour shot photog girlfriend of everybody's favorite half wit dance stud Napoleon dynamite! she played a quiet, shy introverted intern at a small magazine who covers a bazaar personal add request about anyone interested in taking a trip back in time via time travel. Pretty kooky but an irresistible story for the female cub reporter trying for her big break. She teams up with a veteran reporter who takes the assignment for more of a booty call to his ex girlfriend who lives in the same town as the would be time traveler. They fingered the guy who put out the personal add and try to cover the odd story of a person who would put him self up for ridicule and is he just crazy or is there something to it. Pretty funny situations arise in this sleeper movie makes it fun and not to silly. Plazas character gets in good with the odd time traveling department store employee and she starts to appreciate his dedication to his crazy paranoia intentions to travel back in time. Some of the humor is suttle but good. For instance, you would think he might want to g back in time and become rich and famous by changing the past our be a famous athlete. maybe go back to watch dinosaurs room the earth or maybe just a few years back to fix up his love life. Its a pretty funny and bitter script that doesn't have the usual Hollywood ending or does it.... Can’t give it away. Go catch this movie before it goes to dvd. I give it 7out of 10 picks. See you at the movies in the a.m. !!

Danny ‘The Count’ Koker is in the Driver’s Seat When New Car-Loving Series Premieres on HISTORY® COUNTING CARS

July 25, 2012, New York, NY – Most people in Las Vegas bet with chips. Danny “The Count” Koker bets with cars. He’s a Sin City legend with an insatiable appetite for anything on wheels. Danny acquires, restores and customizes classic cars and motorcycles – and then “flips” them for a profit.

Well known to HISTORY viewers thanks to his frequent appearances on the hits series Pawn Stars, The Count moves into t h e d r i v e r ’ s s e a t w h e n COUNTING CARS, the new HISTORY series, premieres with a sneak preview on Monday, August 13 at 10:30pm ET and then moves into its regularly scheduled day and time on Tuesday’s at 10/10:30pm ET thereafter. (Beginning Tuesday, August 14)

Ever since the first Model-T rolled off the assembly line in 1908, cars have gripped the psyche. Danny is no different. He walks, talks and breathes American muscle cars, vintage Harleys, tricked out trikes, and dune buggies. When he sees a ride he wants – whether it’s on display at an auto auction or parked at a roadside diner – he will stop at nothing to acquire it, often making on-the-spot offers with cold, hard cash.

It’s not just a passion for Danny, it’s a high-stakes business. With the help of his talented team, Danny must restore, modify, customize and sell these highway gems in a hurry. The more rides he “picks,” the more pressure there is at his Las Vegas shop to move these vehicles fast to stay in the black.

Every episode of COUNTING CARS is bursting at the seams with amazing stories about historic vehicles, jaw-dropping before-and-after transformations and wheeling and dealing at its absolute best. From vintage Thunderbirds to classic Corvettes and souped-up sidecar motorcycles, Danny will stop at nothing to find and flip the greatest rides of all time.

COUNTING CARS is produced for HISTORY by Leftfield Pictures. Zachary Behr and Julian Hobbs are Executive Producers for HISTORY. Executive Producers for Leftfield Pictures are Brent Montgomery, David George, and Shawn Witt. Joel Patterson is Co-Executive Producer for Leftfield Pictures.

The owner of an old-fashioned corner grocery store in a small country town was fond of quoting a scripture after each sale. He had three old friends that would sit around a pot-bellied stove, playing checkers on a faded board. His ability to produce a scripture for all occasions never ceased to amuse the old timers, and they would listen to see what verse he would come up with relevant to the sale made.

A lady purchased some material and he said, "She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands." A man bought a sack of flour; he said, "Man does not live by bread alone, but every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." "A little boy bought some candy and as he rung it up he quoted, "Suffer the little children to come unto Me."

It was nearly closing time when the chimes over the door jangled loudly. A well dressed young man, obviously a stranger from one of the larger towns down the road, entered.

"Help you?" offered the proprietor. "I need a blanket for my horse," said the man. "He's out in his trailer and it's too cold for just one. Bring me the nicest one you've got!"

The store owner went in the back store room and came back with a brown blanket. "That'll be five dollars."

"Five dollars? You've got to be kidding!' said the man. "This horse is a thoroughbred. He gets only the best! He wouldn't stand still for an old five dollar blanket." Without comment, the store owner took back the blanket, then merely selected a different color and brought it out. "This one's $25 dollars."

"Now, look," said the young man. "Perhaps I didn't make myself plain. This isn't just any old horse! He's worth thousands! Now I want the best, most expensive blanket you've got! Comprende?" The owner once more went into the store room, pulled out another color of the same material and brought it back. "This is the only one left, and it's $100."

"Now that's more like it!" enthused the fellow as he paid. Throwing the five dollar blanket over his shoulder, he left. The old timers stared silently at the shopkeeper as they waited to see what possible scripture he could come up with for that sale! Going behind the register, he rang up the hundred dollars and said, "He was a stranger, and I took him in."

A man was sitting on the edge of the bed, watching his wife, who was

looking at herself in the mirror. Since her birthday was not far off he asked what she'd like to have for her birthday.

'I'd like to be six again', she replied, still looking in the mirror. On the morning of her Birthday, he arose early, made her a nice big

bowl of Lucky Charms, and then took her to Six Flags theme park. What a day! He put her on every ride in the park; the Death Slide, the

Wall of Fear, the Screaming Roller Coaster, everything there was. Five hours later they staggered out of the theme park. Her head was

reeling and her stomach felt upside down. He then took her to a McDonald's where he ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a chocolate shake. Then it was off to a movie, popcorn, soda pop, and her favorite candy, M&M's. What a fabulous adventure!

Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted.

He leaned over his wife with a big smile and lovingly asked, 'Well Dear, what was it like being six again?'

Her eyes slowly opened and her expression suddenly changed. 'I meant my dress size, you retard!!!!' The moral of the story: Even when a man is listening, he is gonna get it

wrong. I was talking to my loveable but rather dimwitted next door neighbor

about a problem that involved her. I told her, "You need to close your curtains the next time you & your husband are having sex. The whole street was watching and laughing at you yesterday."

To which she replied: "Well the joke's on all of you because I wasn't even at home yesterday."

I took my 8 year old grandson on a deep sea fishing trip. While we

sitting in the boat, waiting for a bite, I asked him: "Why do you think Scuba divers always fall, backwards off their boats?"

To which he replied: "If they fell forward, they'd still be in the boat." Harold is 95 and lives in a Senior Citizen Home. Every night after

dinner, Harold goes to a secluded garden behind the Center to sit and ponder his accomplishments and long life.

One evening, Mildred, age 87, wanders into the garden. They begin to chat and before they know it, several hours have passed.

After a short lull in their conversation, Harold turns to Mildred and asks, 'Do you know what I miss most of all?'

She asks, 'What?' 'Sex!!' he replies Mildred exclaims, 'Why you old fart. You couldn't get it up if I held a

gun to your head!' 'I know,' Harold says, 'but it would be nice if a woman could just hold it

for a while.'

Page 21: MotorSports/53deluxe Sept 2012

Well, I can oblige,' says Mildred, who unzips his trousers, removes his manhood and proceeds to hold it. Afterward, they agree to meet secretly each night in the garden where they would sit and talk and Mildred would hold Harold's manhood.

Then one night Harold didn't show up at their usual meeting place. Alarmed, Mildred decided to find Harold and make sure he was O.K.

She walked around the Senior Citizen Home where she found him sitting by the pool with Ethel, another female resident, who was holding Harold's manhood!

Furious, Mildred yelled, 'You two-timing son of a bitch! What does Ethel have that I don't have?'

Old Harold smiled happily and replied, 'Parkinson's.' An attorney arrived home late, after a very tough day trying to get a

stay of execution. His last minute plea for clemency to the governor had failed and he was feeling worn out and depressed.

As soon as he walked through the door at home, his wife started on him about, 'What time of night to be getting home is this? Where have you been? Dinner is cold and I'm not reheating it'. And on and on and on.

Too shattered to play his usual role in this familiar ritual, he poured himself a shot of whiskey and headed off for a long hot soak in the bathtub, pursued by the predictable sarcastic remarks as he dragged himself up the stairs.

While he was in the bath, the phone rang. The wife answered and was told That her husband's client, James Wright, had been granted a stay of execution after all. Wright would not be hanged tonight.

Finally realizing what a terrible day he must have had, she decided to go up stairs and give him the good news.

As she opened the bathroom door, she was greeted by the sight of her husband, bent over naked, drying his legs and feet.

'They're not hanging Wright tonight,' she said. He whirled around and screamed, 'FOR THE LOVE OF GOD

WOMAN, DON'T YOU EVER STOP?!' Ole was hunting geese up in the Minnesota woods. He leaned the old

16 gauge against the corner of the blind to take a leak. As luck would have it, his foolish dog knocked the gun over, it went off and Ole took most of an ounce of #4 in the groin.

Several hours later, lying in a Duluth hospital bed, he came to.... and there was his doctor, Sven.

"Vell Ole, I got some good news and some bad news. Da good news is dat you are going to be OK. Da damage vas local to your groin, dere was very little internal damage, and I vas able to remove all of da buckshot."

"What's the bad news?" asks Ole "The bad news is dat dere vas some pretty extensive buckshot damage

done to your pecker. I'm going to have to refer you to my sister, Lena ." "Well, I guess that isn't too bad," says Ole. "Is your sister a plastic

surgeon?" "Not exactly," Sven says. "She's a flute player in da Minneapolis

Symphony Orchestra. She's going to teach you vhere to put your fingers, so you don't pee in your eye."

This woman rushed to see her doctor, looking very much worried and

all strung out. She rattles off: “Doctor, take a look at me. When I woke up this morning, I looked at myself in the mirror and saw my hair all wiry and frazzled up, my skin was all wrinkled and pasty, my eyes were bloodshot and bugging out, and I had this corpse-like look on my face! What's WRONG with me, Doctor!?”

The doctor looks her over for a couple of minutes, then calmly says: “Well, I can tell you that there ain't nothing wrong with your eyesight....”

A husband and wife were involved in an argument both of them

unwilling to admit that they might be wrong. "I'll admit I was wrong", the wife told her husband in a conciliatory

attempt at straightening things out, "If you'll admit that I'm right!" He agreed and like gentlemen do, he let her go first. "I'm wrong", she said. With a twinkle in his eyes he said, "You're right!"

I always look for a woman who has a tattoo. I see a woman with a tattoo, and I’m thinking, okay, here’s a gal who’s capable of making a decision she’ll regret in the future.

Stuffed deer heads on walls are bad enough, but it’s worse when you see

them wearing dark glasses, having streamers around their necks and a hat on their antlers. Because then you know they were enjoying themselves at a party when they were shot.

There’s always one of my uncles who watches a boxing match with me

and says "Sure. Ten million dollars. You know, for that kind of money, I’d fight him." As if someone is going to pay $200 a ticket to see a 57-year-old carpet salesman get hit in the face once and cry.

Several states had made text messaging while driving a crime, so a

police officer who needed to meet his quota sat in his squad car on a busy street watching for violators. He noticed an SUV speeding with a bunch of screaming teenagers jumping up and down without seat belts on in the back seat while the driver was texting with one hand on the steering wheel.

After he had pulled her over, the police officer said, “Ma’am, you were speeding. You have several kids in the back jumping and screaming without seat belts on. Why in the world were you texting at a time like this?”

“They couldn’t hear me yelling at them,” the driver said, exasperated. “So I was texting them to sit down and shut up.”

This custom build is an original 1960’s AMF pedal car that isn’t so original anymore. The body, steering wheel and the front wheels are all that are left. The idea of the build was my brain child and the actual fabrication came from my father, Roy. The pedals have been removed and could not be placed back because of all the fun additions to the car. I started by getting rear Go Kart racing slicks donated to me for the build. I painted the front and back rims pewter silver to give the nostalgic look from the drag strips. The front end has a straight bar axel, spring suspension along with custom rolled leaf springs. The rear end has a custom built pumpkin and ladder traction bars along with a drive shaft from front to back. There were a few original body lines that I filled to give the look of a real car. A hole was cut in the hood to allow for the 1:6 scale model of a full blown Ford 427 drag motor to come up through. Brackets were attached to the front to show off the beer can gas tank that gives fuel to this gasser. That basically concludes the end of the build and time to hit the paint shop.

I shot the body in primer then racked my brain on how I was going to do the paint scheme to make this look nostalgic and eye catching. I decided to go with an Outrageous Ecstasy Orange Flake over Hunter Orange basecoat. When you walk around the car the flakes change the color of the orange to a yellow and green. I chose to airbrush “Lil’ Big Shot” on the sides because I felt it fit the build to the tee. All the extreme details on the front and back of the car are all airbrush work and not a decal. To make this piece look the way it does I love using Presta’s Spray ‘N Shine as a quick detailer and Presta’s Fast Wax for quick protection and a fantastic finish. This custom pedal car is going to be on display at the 15th Good-Guys PPG Nationals in Columbus, Ohio in the pedal car competition. The build is also going to be featured in Gasser Magazine in an upcoming issue.

Two big happenings, last Saturday night, August 4th I dropped over to Lakeshore Blvd and Lower Bay Road about 8:30 P.M. to visit “Crickets” Hokey Tonk. There were about 150 cars in the parking lot (or more) and Dana was at the front door greeting everyone. Dana is Crickets wife (so careful you guys). Cricket has replaced most of the bartenders with new faces. Great bands, one early, and one late, they were doing the dance music on that huge dance floor I told you about. I walked around in the building to see if I knew anybody. All I saw was new faces. Then I heard “Hi Pineapple” and there was Rita with friends and I felt a little better.

Bruce of Selliers II Restaurant & Bar next door has plenty of food and/or short orders ready to go for anyone who gets hungry during the night. He has a great menu and at this time opens at 11 A.M. Till 2 A.M. Bruce is open Wednesday, thru Sunday. He is planning on 6a.m. soon (and that includes the bar you bad boys). For you out of town CRUISERS he has a great Sea Food Baskets, Aged Ribeye Steaks and a Great Hamburger Steak. (SEE HIS AD) When he opens for breakfast one of his leaders will be STEAK & EGGS! Maybe SPAM, STEAMED RICE and EGGS Hawaiian Style!

For you CRUISERS the Beach Hi Way from Bay St. Louis to the Silver Slipper is a great view going west to Waveland and the Waveland Pier (you can drive on it now). You have to keep going west, and just as you pass the Slipper parking for RV'S and Trailers is a large “T” intersection that is Lakeshore Blvd. Take a right go across the tracks, and the next intersection is Lower Bay Road. Crickets and Selliers II is on your left, with a Huge Safe parking lot. If you don't like that action the VFW Post is a block up the road (after you turn left) and its got lots of parking! Sam's the C.O. and knows everybody, and everything.

I've got to warn you CRUISERS, Larry (Pineapples Husband as Debbie of Anita's Lounge says) (see Anita's ad). The cops are looking for anyone with out a seat belt. Larry left the Shell Station and forgot to put on his seat belt and the Long Beach Cops stopped him. The fine is $75.00

The next bit of news is the “take over” of “Reds Pub” in the Kiln, by “Cowboys n Angeles” has closed, (according to local gossip ) and the bike shop has gone down with it! I guess the place is just unlucky for some! They had a great breakfast buffet! I will talk to Rene bartender at CC'S Bar (because she knows everything) and let you know what really happened.

You CRUISERS who love oysters had better try “Dempsey's” in the Kiln. They have Raw & Chard Boiled or Rockefeller, South of the Border Oysters. See their ad here. Steaks & Seafood are always available and are of best! On Sat. & Sun. they open at 7 A.M. for breakfast. Go early cause they are jammed.

CC'S Bar is down 603 about a mile from Dempsey's, and they have great pool tables and good booze. They have happy hour 7 days a week, 2 P.M. till 6 P.M. Crystal is the owner and has a live band on Friday nights. I took the time to use a “coupon” at Sloppy Dogs in Bay St. Louis for a Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich. He has great hot dog's but, I just had to try the Philly Cheese Streak. You get $1.00 off any meal with the coupon on the bottom of their ad in this magazine (good till 31st). He has beer, but since I don't drink beer I placed my order to go and went next door to Ugly Pirate for my wine. (see their ad ) They are one block off the beach behind “Trapani's” and “North Beach” restaurants. Ugly Pirate is next door to them, and both have outside tables with umbrellas.

I was sitting outside under the umbrella, sun was out no rain or bugs, and I start thinking of “Hawaii”. Let me tell a little about the beach boys. I knew that the beachboys were famous, colorful, celebrated, and talented, but I did not know if they could be considered historically important. It is true that the beachboys constitute a historically identifiable phenomenon. There was (and is) nothing quite like the Waikiki beachboys anywhere else in the world. But not much had been written about them, and much

of what had been written superficial. Stories about the beach boys had a tendency to pose a single question (you mean they get paid for this?) The beachboys are a window into oldtime Waikiki, for they are intimately connected to almost every aspect of it. The music, the water, the romance, the grand hotels and their celebrity guests. Surfing and outrigger canoeing, two Hawaiian water sports that were in precipitous decline around the turn of the century, were revived in Waikiki in great part due to the beachboys. The music of Hawaii that so charmed the world during the first half of twentieth century - much of it took its inspiration from the beach. Waikiki grew up around the beach, and tourism grew along with it, the beachboys functioning as its unofficial tourist bureau. Who greeted visitors with leis when they arrived? Who serenaded them with song and bid them tearful good-byes? Who was the life of the party and, in between, most everything else? As Charles (“Panama Dave”) used to say, “Hell, if it wasn't for us beachboys, nobody would come to Hawaii.

Men like Duke Kahanamoku and My uncle Blue Makua, were beachboys in the truest sense. They lived for the ocean and for a lifestyle centered on the beach. Yes, we still have beachboys today. They are now, the sons, grandsons etc. Since you CRUISERS are in town I thought you might enjoy this picture. Waikiki watermen and beach boys were among the first in modern times to test the big surf on Oahu's West and North shores. At Makaha Beach 1949, from left: Russ Takaki, Rabbit Kekai, and Wally Froiseth, Roy Folk is seated in Froiseth's Phaeton 1936 V8 Ford. Photo courtesy of Wally Froiseth.

OK, back to Mississippi: I got into Precious, my 300 ZX Nissan, turned on the my tape of Don

Ho (famous Hawaiian singer) and headed for the VFW In Bay St. Louis.

Some are in wheel chairs, many are dead, none of my articles have they read, but my

thoughts always return to them. Well for our Debbie, Pat, Rene`, Kayle, Min, Starr, Cricket & Nates

Bar, Jan & Thelma @ Tiffen Room, Anita's @ Anita's Bar. I'm starting off with 1953 and darlin' Sylvia who was the daughter of the manager of the gambling joint in Bell Gardena, Ca. I believe it was called the Bicycle Club, but I'm not really sure. If you remember last month Sylvia was the one who loved Leotards and could get the left leg out of them in about 5 seconds. It was a great 3 weeks.

Anyway, I've got my little double garage with my race car (midget) on Firestone Blvd. a block north of Atlantic Blvd. about 3 blocks down (West) from Firestone Blvd. I kept fuel, oil, tools, extra parts and all that was need to keep the race car sharp and running.

Silvia and I were doing fine, and I had picked her up in the early afternoon so I could take her to work (Bicycle Club) at 5 P.M. We were in my shop, and I was grinding a bracket, (she was watching) and I accidentally knocked off a bunch of grinding dust into an open container of nitro that I going to mix with the alcohol (methanol). Mad, and swearing I grabbed a “T' Shirt and was trying to strain thru it, but the “T” Shirt was too thick! Nothing was going thru to the pan below. All of a sudden I felt a tap on my back, and when I turned around, Sylvia was standing there with no leotards on, and handing me a pair of panties. “Won't this strain it better? She asked. “Sure will” I replied, and then added, “I've never seen you with both legs out of those leotards”.

Her blouse being down, but not very far, and the legs were really great! I started draining the Nitro thru the panties (they were pink by the way). There are some things you never forget, and this was one of them. (Pink panties that is) She was standing behind me, leotards on the floor. When I was finished pouring, she had her leotards back on, and as I handed her the panties she said “let's go to your apartment and wash these, so I can wear them to work “tonight”. It was about 2:30 and we put them in the washer at the laundry room at my apartment. Sylvia set the washer for 60 minutes and looked at me and said “we will come back later right?” “I'll even help you get them on if you wish”, I replied. We had a great afternoon and I got her to work at 5:00 on time. But ---- her Dad was

WELCOME CRUISERS

I was going to meet Jim Mitchell (owner of Red Rooster Resort in Waveland. See his ad here. You CRUSIERS from out of town will love the ½ acre of parking, 2 houses, in ground diving pool, 15 ft deep at diving end! The “Big House” has 4 bedrooms, 2 bath, hot tub on the rear deck, and of course the pool. 2nd house is called the pool house has 2 bedroom 1 bath, it looks over the pool. You can rent both places. Jim lives on the property. He has a cute cottage next to the big house.

While at the VFW in Bay St. Lois, the 2500 sq. ft. meeting room had been decorated for a wedding & reception. I talked with the grooms mother and that's a lady who should have been a “wedding planner” it was very well done and beautiful. Her son was going in the army in a few days. The room (2500 sq. ft.) is available to rent to the public, and the bar is also open to the public (beer or BYOB). On Fridays the VFW has a fish platter $6.00. Bobby is known to hold a beer in one hand and cook a great sea food platter at the same time! He also has a beautiful classic car which we never see.

Well it's Tuesday and I'm headed for “The Launch” right off 603. They serve beer and wine coolers only. But it is a cool place. You can set and look out and watch the boats go out and come in. Reminds me of Hawaii. The place is so small, but it will seat 20 or 30. The pool table is out side!

I now head for El Maguey Mexican Cuisine in Bay St. Louis. (see their ad) They have happy hour 2 P.M. - 5 P.M. 7 Days a week. I order my wine (which is on happy hour) and decided to have a lunch special. Taco, Beef Enchilada and rice, only $5.00. Happy Hour is 2-4-1 any bar drink!

I was in Gulfport and decided to check out Andy's 49er Restaurant and Bar 12013 Hwy 49. They just opened on fathers day. As you walk in they have a great fish tank on your right. It is very family friendly. Plenty of tables for small or large family and friends. They have a big TV on one wall. If you wish they have a bar in back (Beer & Wine) and you can eat in there. Lisa Wren is the owner and has a great menu, Steak, Seafood, Pasta, Burgers & More. (they are next to Kmart).

News Flash: I talked to Cricket at the bank on Aug. 16th and he said his mechanical bull is in and operating! Watch next issue for some of my old and new places!

waiting for her when I walked her in the door of the club. “I want to talk to you” he growled at me! So I followed him into his

office and I knew I was “in for it” because he didn't sit, and we were both standing. “You and Sylvia are not going to see each other any more!” He stated.

I held both hands out at him palms up, and said “you don't even know me”!

He looked directly at me, with a stare that wasn't pretty, and growled, “I've had you followed for the last two week since you first met her at the “Rex Bar”. “She doesn't need you!!.. nor you her, so don't come back tonite and I'll explain it all to her”. he said quietly with a low menacing voice. So, I left, and tried to get hold of Johnny Tolan, fellow race driver, and gambler, that always hung out at the poker room in Gardena when in town.

Never found Johnny that week, so I called my WWII buddy Jim Monaco from my home town of Salem, Oregon, he was manager of the poker room at the Flamingo in in Vegas.

Of course, with a last name of Monaco, and his ability with cards, he wound up in Vegas after WWII. He finally retired about 15 years ago, as Poker Room, 24hr Mgr.

So, I asked him about Sylvia's Dad and did he know him? Well he laughed, and said “I don't know him, but rumors are that Mickey Cohen out of San Pedro is trying to get into the California gambling at Gardena and probably Bell Gardens”. “Better take a pass on the daughter”.

End of events at Bell Gardens, leotards, and great afternoons. She never made it to the race track, always was working Friday, Saturday,

Sunday. She would be about 80 yrs now. I was 25 & her 20. I still remember the Leo's and Pink Panties! Wouldn't you?

Memory Time again (racing that is) The photo courtesy of NSSN. If you get your specs on, Pearson, (17) is driving a Merc 475 C.I. and Petty is behind with a “wing” on the tail! “You can buy a dream or two, to last thru the years, the price you pay, may be a heart full of tears”.

The midget race car photo is me in #54 V-8 60 (had to change the #55 to #54 to complete in USAC who had taken over the AAA Circuit, and I couldn't run my #55 number from URA, so we taped on a #54 and we entered. That's Bud Clemons in the #14 behind me in “Surdos” Offey. Offys only had one exhaust (usually on the right side). You will notice my left front wheel is picking up about 6”. I started in front of the heat race, won it but wounded up 4th in the main. Also J. C. Aggajanian was the promoter and put me in the LA TIMES. We were good business friends and I really appreciated his help. The flathead V-8 - 60's had 130+ inches (more if you went (100x100) and much more torque than the 100 C I DOHC Offys, so off the corner you best get the edge, because at this end of the “chute” they would eat you up, if there was room. It was easier on asphalt to race them, dirt was murder, they could go to the outside “groove” on dirt and get by, but not on flat asphalt. (no outside groove) they had to get you at the starters flag, or drop back for the corner. You couldn't let them get under you at the flag or you were history!

My youngest daughter Kayle, was a very proficient drag racer. It was 1978 and she turned 16 yrs at Bancroft High School in Bellflower, Calif.

Each of my 4 kids got the used car of their choice at 16. So --- I picked up a all steel body 69 Camaro, (6 cylinder) snatched out the engine, put in a 455 posi, stall torque @3000 tranny with 350 V-8, Schneider 292-302 flat tappet cam, stock 4 core radiator, and of course Holly and Edlebrock and Hooker. Double springs in distributor, big block oil pump.

She drove this car to school, we didn't take out seats, radio or anything but the spare tire. (no nitro or nitrous.) and I put “cheater” tires on back. We ran at Orange County Drag Strip, and none of the “hot shot” guys in school would run against her. Her best time was 12:24 - 110 mph. My e-mail is below, if you have any questions?

There’s a new dog in town and owner Julius Landry says it’s the best dog in the world! The dog is of course Sloppy Dogs on North Second Street in Bay St. Louis, an eatery

offering a new dimension in gourmet hot dogs on the Gulf Coast. Few restaurants even offer a good hot dog anymore, but the American classic is reaching new heights at this hot spot featuring quality ingredients, an innovative menu and a friendly environment.

The heart of this new dog is an all-beef, natural casing hot dog that is plainly superior to any commercially available hot dog on the Coast. The proof is in the tasting and this dog won’t let you down. The flavor is assertive, the texture firm and its big enough to fill the bun as it should.

The menu, just like the establishment, is diminutive. The building comes in at just about 164 square feet, not including patio with its umbrella topped tables outside. But small as the menu is it packs a powerful punch with a great selection of hot dog and sandwich specialties. The Original Sloppy Dog comes in three

sizes and is loaded with chili, cheese, onions and mustard. If you missed the fact that this place is called the Sloppy dog a couple of bits into this dog, and a hand full of napkins later and you’ll know why. It’s big, it’s messy and it is great. Get the large size for only seven dollars, it’s called the Bay Dog, and you’ve got a meal two could enjoy.

Another standout is the Chicago Dog, an authentic recreation of one of the most famous hot dogs in the world. This hot dog lover’s favorite is stacked with sport peppers, a relish that you will take notice of, tomato wedges, onions, mustard, crunchy pickles and celery salt; order extra napkins with this one too.

All of the eleven hot dogs on the menu look great, some are pretty simple like the Polish Dog that comes plain, or any way you like it, but others like the Pizza Dog and the Slaw dog are imaginative combinations that beg to be tried.

But a visit to The Sloppy Dog would not be complete without sampling some of the non-dog offerings. The Philly Cheesesteak brings the house down and the Fish Tacos, a new arrival on the Coast, is a winner with three tacos served on garlic buttered tortillas for just six dollars; add cheese if you’re feeling heady and really hungry. There are also healthy fries, Zapps Kettle Cooked Chips and, unbelievably, thirty three kinds of beer available. The Sloppy Dog is also the only place on the Coast that serves Abita Root Beer on tap.

The food is good, the portions are generous and the prices are right, so who could ask for more? Well owner Julius Landry closes the deal by making sure The Sloppy Dog is a family friendly, even dog friendly place (look for the food and water bowls outside), where his enthusiasm for his customers, his food and his new home of Bay St Louis is hard to miss. This is a great place for a quick meal on the run, a leisurely dog on your day off or a Sunday get together with friends.

Trying to raise money for your organization?????

So, you are thinking about organizing a classic car show for your

church or organization as an outreach event. You are looking for a different kind of event that will expose more of your community to your organization’s needs. Automotive events, especially those geared toward classic automobiles are popular all over the country and attract people of all ages. A cruise-in or car show is a great outreach event that more and more charities are using as outreach events in their communities. If you organization or church has plenty of outdoor space such as a large parking lot or field or access to such space, you can have a classic car event that will draw families and people of all ages in your community. It’s an event that can work in urban, suburban, and rural environments.

Cruise-ins and car shows invoke nostalgia and interest in simpler times when cars dripped with chrome instead of plastic. Imagine an outdoor event at your site where the parking lot or a grassy area is full of shiny, old, classic cars while people casually admire the cars, meet new people, and enjoy food and entertainment, all in a “low-threat” environment.

This guide is designed to help you design your event, budget for your event, and conduct it. You will need lots of help and of course, you will need to coordinate the date, times, and details with your leadership. This guide is classic car-centric but don’t forget motorcycles, old trucks, late model street rods, and specialty vehicles such as hearses, old fire engines, military Jeeps, etc. that often participate in these events.

Manage your expectations. It’s hard to predict the turnout for your first event. Talk to those who have organized other cruise-ins or car shows in your area (at churches and other locations) to find out what their first year turnout was and how much publicity they did. Turnout in the first year may be disappointing despite a massive publicity campaign. If you inject professionalism into the event and demonstrate sincerity that you appreciate the turnout of those who brought a car and those who came out to enjoy a car show, you will get repeat turnout and new attendees in successive years. Your event must prove itself and establish a positive reputation. It will grow as you repeat it.

A classic car cruise-in or car show can be a “lead-in” to new folks exploring what your organization has to offer. It can lead to new relationships and connections to people who otherwise you may have not met were it not for a car show. Your cruise-in or car show will look a lot like ones held all over the country in parking lots and fields at strip malls, schools, parks, restaurants, and other locations. They are becoming increasingly common as a charity event. Almost everybody likes to see shiny, old cars, whether or not they know a spark plug from a tire jack.

Is There A Difference Between a Cruise-In and a Car Show? Yes. A cruise-in usually does not award prizes and trophies whereas a car show usually does. I say “usually” because sometimes the two terms are used interchangeably. Categories for awards and trophies come in a wide variety, such as “Best Paint,” “Best 50’s Car,” “Best Unrestored Classic,” “People’s Choice,” “Best Muscle Car,” “Best Import,” etc. A cruise-in is usually a more casual affair. Cruise-ins and car shows often have several other features such as music (live or music CDs), door prizes, dash plaques, and food and drinks.

Cruise-ins generally do not charge a registration fee for car owner participants whereas car shows normally do in order to subsidize the cost of the awards and other expenses. Car show registration fees are typically $15 - $25 per car. Spectators are usually not charged a fee in either event.

I recommend cruise-ins (without awards), especially if this will be your first classic car event. Cruise-ins are more inclusive and simpler and cheaper to conduct without awards. A car show can keep some car owners home that have not yet (or just can’t) invest a lot of time and money into restoring their vehicle to show winning condition. I personally don’t mind admiring a rust bucket of a 1953 Buick Skylark that was just pulled out of a barn where it sat and deteriorated for 27 years and still smells like mouse urine inside. That is an extreme example but you get the idea. Cruise-ins can bring out more of the “daily driver” classics that are still intriguing despite their rust and imperfect interiors.

You can also do a hybrid event where car owners who want to compete for awards can pay a registration fee and get a numbered windshield placard for reference by the judges and park in a designated “show car” area. All others park in a different area for the cruise-in.

If you want to have a lot of family and kid oriented elements as well as the car-related elements, you may want to call your event a Classic Car Fest or something similar. Another variation is a multi-day event. One format could be a cruise-in on a Friday night followed by a judged car show/car fest on Saturday. City downtown areas and parks often have these types of events.

Decide early what kind of event you want to have. Whichever type of event you organize, consider partnering with a well-known charity or non profit organization in your area. Some people advertise proceeds go directly to the charity or non-profit organization, etc. However, I believe supporting and partnering with a well known charity or non-profit organization can create a wider appeal in the community to those unfamiliar with your organization.

Proceeds from registration, food sales, t-shirt sales, etc. can be donated to the selected charity or non-profit. Examples include the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, a local homeless shelter, a local food bank, etc. An event benefiting a food bank could have the “registration” or “admission” fee be grocery items. The selected beneficiary might even provide volunteers and participate in publicity. Regardless of the beneficiary you choose, keep your event outreach focused rather than focused on fundraising. If you sell food, keep the prices low (e.g. $5 for a burger, chips, and soda). The low price advice also applies to merchandise you might sell such as commemorative t-shirts. If you have a registration fee, keep it as low as you reasonably can.

What kind of cars should you expect? “Classic cars” generally refers to cars from the early 70’s and older although there are strict age and make/model definitions for serious enthusiasts. Many events are advertised as open to all classic vehicles. Other events get specific with age (e.g. pre-1977). You are likely to end up with a mixture of original vehicles of all conditions, restored vehicles, “resto-mods” (cars that look original but have modern or high performance drivetrains), customs, hot rods, street rods, old trucks, newer or old motorcycles, and possibly some “specialty vehicles” such as hearses, military vehicles, old fire trucks, and old police cars. In some parts of the country, old tractors and other combustion engine farm equipment are also featured. All of this variation can make award categories tricky. Be specific about what you want in your advertising or leave it as “open to all classic vehicles” and enjoy what arrives.

"Metal"of Honor Slidell On Saturday, 22 September St. Tammany

Fire District No. 1 and Southside Café, 3154 Pontchartrain Drive (Hwy 11) in Slidell are co-producing what we hope will be a very large car and bike show to benefit wounded Louisiana warfighters and the surviving families of those killed in action.

We want to show these folks and their families who have sacrificed so much, just how much they are appreciated by the bike and car community. please plan on registering your ride and attending this event.

The event location is behind Southside Café located at the 3154 Pontchartrain Drive (Hwy 11) in Slidell.

The event “Metal” of Honor Slidell (www.metalofhonorslidell.com will raise funds for the Support Our War Heroes Foundation (www.supportourwarheroes.net This 501 (c)(3) provides assistance to Louisiana military members who have been wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan and the families of those heroes who were killed in action.

It is our target to register 400 to 500 cars and bikes. We estimate that, if we are blessed with good weather, we will draw 4,000 or so visitors. We will have awards in several major categories of bikes and cars. The “Top Gun” award will be presented to the very best car or bike in the show. The first 250 vehicles registered will receive commemorative plaques. We will also have the Warrior Award this will go to the best car or bike owned by a veteran or current military member. Each winner is eligible for one award only. Winners are to be determined by vote of the folks attending the event.

The event will feature Louisiana's largest Tug-O-War completion visit our website to register your ride and a Tug-O-War Team. As noted on the website and the attached poster, we will have four bands beginning at 11:00 AM and wrapping up around 7:00 PM. Along with the display of great cars and bikes, there will be a static display of antique law enforcement, fire and military equipment. This will be far more than a car and bike show.

Registration is $25 per car or bike on-line at our website or $35 on the day of the event. The on-site registration desk will open at 8:00 AM on the day of the event. There will be plenty of great food and too many libations to think about.

This will be a great day for the for the entire family for folks who have in every sense of the word earned it.

Thank you, Larry Hess
